What does 2016 hold for the Yorkshire property market? Welcome to the first edition of the Yorkshire Property Bulletin. Looking at 2016 so far it has certainly been one of the most interesting markets that I’ve worked in. So far this year we’ve seen: • • •
Record low interest rates Shortage of houses being built Stamp Duty surcharge on second homes
Record Low Interest Rates The Bank of England Base Rate has stayed at 0.5% since 5th March 2009 which is over 7 years! Most of the predictions are that rates will not rise this year. Because interest rates are so low, borrowing on a fixed rate mortgage is at an all-time low and therefore a much more affordable option. When my family and I moved house last summer – we decided to take a fixed rate mortgage for 5 years at around 2.5%, a great rate – an option
I’d certainly recommend. If you are paying more on a variable rate mortgage, we can help you find a less expensive option. Shortage of houses being built In 2015, 171,000 additional homes were added to the UK housing stock which was the highest level since 2008. The government projected that by 2033 the number of households in the UK would increase by 5.8 million, that’s a supply of 232,000 new households per year. Supply is clearly not meeting demand and this is putting pressure on both house and rental prices. It is likely that these prices will rise until such time as when the supply of new houses catches up with demand. Helping address the housing stock shortage is our Land & New Homes team who, working with builders, have got some great new sites becoming available in the next few months. Stamp Duty Surcharge Since the 1st of April 2016 anyone who owns more than one property now has to pay an additional 3% on their next purchase. The 3% surcharge is an area

might be game for a laugh and a dance - but when it comes to his craft, the actor means business. He talks to Susan Griffin about his latest big-screen challenge and what it feels like to go viral. Tom Hiddleston loves to let loose on the dance floor. He’s proven this on various chat shows, where he’s happily demonstrated some of his favourite moves, and only recently, a video of him dancing with Taylor Swift at New York’s glamorous Met Gala went viral.

Marc Abraham, the writer and director of his latest movie, I Saw The Light, which explores the life of the late country star Hank Williams, has described him as a perfectionist - which Hiddleston doesn’t deny. “Marc’s right about that. I put a huge amount of pressure on myself,” confesses the actor, who was spotted by a talent agent during a university production of A Streetcar Named Desire, and appeared in numerous TV and stage projects before graduating from Rada in 2005.
It’s not the first time footage of him has gone viral. His performance as undercover agent Jonathan Pine, in the TV adaptation of John Le Carre’s espionage drama The Night Manager, drew huge acclaim - along with calls for him to play the next Bond. But it was the intense sex scene, with actress Elizabeth Debicki, that caused a real sensation. It must be strange to wake up and discover newspaper columns and online forums dedicated to the sight of your bare buttocks? He shakes his head and laughs. “I have no control over anyone else’s opinion of my work, or who I am or what I do, so you just have to keep doing what you do.” At the time of the reaction he was in Vietnam filming Kong: Skull Island. “I had an immediate job to get on with, so that’s where my focus was”. Hiddleston, today dressed in dark trousers and longsleeved grey sports top, listens intently to questions, offers considered, articulate answers in a smooth, soothing voice,
It’s “hard” for him to explain why he chooses certain projects. “It’s always something instinctive, a pure gut feeling,” offers Hiddleston who’s currently filming Thor: Ragnarok, his fourth outing as the villainous Loki following his introduction to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2011. He might be playing those Bond rumours down but it’s clear his career’s set to continue on a stellar trajectory. “The way I find peace with it [fame], is just going, ‘Well I know who I am and know what my life is, and everyone else’s opinion is their own’.
