sensualSEATING It’s a common misconception that one must sacrifice a certain degree of comfort in the search of stylish and sensual seating. There is nothing better than finding a piece that is both functional and fabulous, like the unconventional Dragonfly designed by Karim Rashid. It is contemporary furniture at its best, and a great buy for small spaces. The aptly named ‘Dragonfly’ folds out its ‘wing’ to convert from a stylish easy-chair to a clean-contemporary chaise lounge in one swift movement. > Alteriors Contemporary Furniture, 613-722-1661, alteriors.ca

sensualSEATING Clean geometric shapes come together to form the seat of Chair One by Magis. Its unconventional materials create a fun and functional piece, that is made up of cool lines providing a contemporary feel. The surprisingly comfortable chair is a statement piece and no matter which of the three takes on the chair you choose (concrete base, stackable, or swivel) it is sure to spark a conversation. > Alteriors Contemporary Furniture, 613-722-1661, alteriors.ca

sensualSEATING Seductive lines combined with the warmth of South American hardwood, creates the Matera (top) and Museo (bottom). The relatively low level of the chairs produce a zen like quality, while the rich leathers, and weaving of the wide seats create the smooth and sexy image that is synonymous with South America. These chairs will bring warmth to any room while maintaining the integrity of a contemporary design. > Green Light District Design, 613-614-2333, 223 Dalhousie St. (Byward Market)

sensualSEATING “In 1993, I studied with a chairmaker in Nagano, Japan. The work centered on the use of wooden planes and spokeshaves to shape and polish curved surfaces. The furniture I now make continues to draw from that experience, particularly regarding the subtle qualities of natural materials and an object’s expression of “space”: Both the volume, which a piece seems to occupy and the framing of space within a structure, the openings that give the eye a place to dwell.” > Daniel Marciano Workshop, 149 Bentley Ave. Unit #8, 613-324-9648, danielmarcianofurnituremaker.com

FOOD&architecture Joël Robuchon: Marble checkerboard flooring and a shimmering chandelier lead up to a geometrical dining room, and an adjacent terrace. Furnished in beige, violet and black, Joël Robuchon’s Mansion, created by architect and designer Pierre Yves Rochon, deploys a very much French-style elegance. La pièce de résistance is the private dining room, dressed in heavy velvet hangings facing a wall of leaves. The stunningly intimate dining area is lit by an ancient Tisserant chandelier. Pastry Chef Kamel Guechida’s brilliance lies in the balance between his dedicated artistry and deft technical skills. The most memorable is the spectacular petit four trolley, affectionately known as the “candy cart,” which displays an array of bite-size sweets that range from chocolate truffles to sake meringue.

Over the course of his career, Paul Raff has played a significant role at the intersection of art and architecture. He has collaborated with engineers, landscape architects, and other architects and artists to realize hugely creative investigations of space. TEXTURE HAIR SALON: INTERVIEW This local Ottawa hair salon is turning heads, coming up big on the radar as one of the leading salons in the country. Preston Catalogue sat down with salon owner Ramsey, stylist Illona & colour technician Samantha while they worked their magic on Carissa from Models International Management (as pictured above). Preston Catalogue: How did you get started? & How did you get this opportunity? Samantha: I started 4 years ago with a co-op placement at Texture, apprenticed under Ramsey, became certified after attending Wella Professional Training and Marvel Beauty School (in Westboro) PC: What is the best part of your role? S: Making clients happy and feeling great while at the salon. Giving customers a wonderful experience- it’s not just about hair but an overall experience of services with personality and great friends. PC: Cut or Colour, what is the most important and why? S: Both are equally important to the look, like form to function and function to form. It can go either way- it’s that balance where both need each other.
“Styling Carissa’s hair is always fun. Working with the raw and edgy, yet feminine texture of Ramsey’s haircut, and the rich, prismatic tones of Samantha’s colour artistry was a no brainer... all I had to do was put my spin on it! I wanted to show off the work of my colleagues in the most honest and fashion forward sense, so I threw a few curls in it, gave it a shot of hairspray and then just messed it up in the most uncontrived manner. After placing some bobby pins just so, I called it a day! I dont like to overdo hair for shoots like this, it has to feel natural and fun, unpretentious and real, so thats what we did, no big deal! - Illona, Stylist
PC: What should someone consider before getting a new look? S: Consider the reasons for wanting a new look, determine how much of a change they want. It could be simple or drastic, inspired by their favourite celebrity styles, type of mood, get suggestions and ideas from their stylists, etc. PC: Are heat-activated tools really bad for your hair? S: Not bad at all! They can be a big advantage as most styles need it to process certain looks. However, you should keep it in moderation, avoid excessive use. PC: Can you predict any key trends for the new season? ie. colours, cuts, styles, etc. S: It’s ever changing, try to always maintain a certain natural look using natural tones, colours, long and wavy but not too curly. Bohemian styles are always in. PC: Since this is our architecture showcase edition, we must ask, could you give us your take on hair design as it relates to architecture? S: Well, I’m a fan of funky design but also appreciate classic historical design. Like great architecture, classic hair styles are always in but new styles are always being developed. Modern looks, modernism and minimalism- simple natural cuts and colours are currently in.

Architectural MODELS
Architectural firm Van Elslander Carter revamped this downtown Toronto office located on the top floor of an 80 year old two storey building to infuse it with modern flare and to highlight the character of the original space. Similar to an art gallery, the sleek, open concept and simplistic design of the new office allows the models, clients, and existing space to be at the forefront. There are plenty of windows surrounding the space that let an abundance of natural light shine onto all the unique design elements within it. The original architectural elements are exposed & painted white to offset the new elements which are rich chocolate brown & a bold red. The completed look is airy, playful and strong. > Van Elslander Carter, tvearch.com, 1-416-533-1142 > Ford Toronto office, fordmodelseurope.com, 1-416-362-9208

TheNEWAGO
The new AGO is Toronto-born Frank Gehry’s first building in Canada and marks the very place where he made the initial connection between art and architecture. Hallmarks of his AGO design connect the city and the Gallery in provocative new ways including, dramatic sculptural staircases, the warmth of Douglas fir, and the extensive use of glass which infuses the galleries with natural light. As you will discover, it is an extraordinary new home for extraordinary new art. > Art Gallery of Ontario, ago.net, 1-877-225-4246

NATURE’sCANVAS
The Stanley Park Environmental Art Project was born out of a desire to respond creatively to the devastating damage done to the Park in a 2006 windstorm. Four artists teams were selected to create works that would either leave the landscape unharmed or produce ecological benefits, using only natural materials. A collaborative effort between artists, ecologists, park stewards, and the ecology of the park itself, the semi-permanent Art Project was installed in summer 2009. > vancouver.ca/spea Photography by: Paul Colangelo

humancomposition Canadian Composer Clinton Shorter sets the tone in “District 9.

music&FILM HOLLYWOOD REPORTER JUST CALLED HIM, ONE OF THE NEW COMPOSERS TO WATCH, WHICH IS APPARENT WHEN YOU HEAR HIS SCORE IN DISTRICT 9.
Canadian Film Composer Clinton Shorter scores “District 9” produced by Peter Jackson and directed by Neill Blomkamp. The film, based on Blomkamp’s short film, Alive in Joburg, centers on the fallout caused by a group of alien refugees stranded on Earth (in Johannesburg) and forced into a segregation camp (the title comes from District 6, a former inner-city residential area in Cape Town infamous for the forced removal of 60,000 residents in the 70s by the Apartheid regime). The film blends documentary style with traditional shooting techniques. Shorter, recently named by Hollywood Reporter “Next Generation of Film Composers to Watch,” has worked with the director on several projects, “I had worked with Neill [Blomkamp] over the years on his commercials and short films. When he called in late 2008 and asked me if I’d score his first feature I was all over it.”

For “District 9,” Shorter collaborated closely with Blomkamp, “I spent the first several weeks experimenting with every African instrument I could think of. Neill was really pushing me to give the score an African sound; it was quite a task to maintain an African feel but give the film the darkness and edge it required. We incorporated African male vocals with some percussion from the region combined with other elements. With “District 9,” I knew from the beginning that I was going to go with more of a hybrid score of live and synthesized instruments. Without giving too much away there’s a “mutation” of sorts in the film and I wanted to have that mirrored in the music” Shorter also scored the short film which was the impedus of the feature but, as the composer said, “For the short, we hired a singer and used various orchestral libraries. The sound for the feature is quite different.” > clintonshorter.com > d-9.com
