FISHING MADE EASY Korum 2016 Hello and welcome to the latest Korum Fishing Made Easy magazine, put together lovingly by our consultants, media maestro Adam Firth and a talented group of in-house designers. It’s loaded with great advice; captivating stories and loads of stunning new tackle to add to your armoury in 2016. Whether you’re chasing new personal bests or just like seeing the float go under and the tip go around, you can’t fail to learn from this year’s magazine. The best anglers in the business reveal their innermost thoughts and tactics, as well as reliving some awesome tales about really special fish. Inspiring stuff! On the tackle front, we’ve some great new gear. My personal favourite is the feeder that makes feeder fishing easier than ever before. You must have all been there, trying to use a Method feeder with a mould, but your bait won’t stick and you’re limited to only groundbait or pellets. Well with the new Korum Easy Method Feeder, you don’t need a mould and you can load it with whatever bait you like! Just like a traditional openended feeder, but modernised to be used in the Method Feeder style with an in-line setup and a short hooklink. For me, it doesn’t get any easier, or more fun. Just load it up and cast it out – it’s that simple. Another new product that makes life on the bank easy is the range of Any Chair Accessories. It means you can now take your standard fishing chair and transform it into a true fishing station. It’s all the benefits of the Korum Chair system, but for use with Any Chair. The river lads are sure to love the new Roving Kit, a really great bit of kit for mobile anglers. They’ll also love the fantastic new Barbel Line, a hooklink material that’s been three years in the making. Our consultants are absolutely gutted that the public now get to use this awesome monofilament material too – it really is the best line we’ve ever used for barbel fishing. There’s loads more and, as always, loads more to come too. So whilst we’re busy getting on with all of that, enjoy a great year’s fishing. Tight lines, I hope I see you on the bank some time.

DAI GRIBBLE The Best Season Ever

Dai Gribble enjoyed some record-breaking catches in 2015. Read on as he relives the year of an angling lifetime‌ Angling, perhaps more than any other sport, has the ability to throw up the unexpected and that is exactly what happened to me in 2015. After a cracking end to the river season, culminating with a 4lb perch and a 26lb+ river pike, I took a short break before starting tench fishing in early May. After four seasons targeting the tench at the fantastic Linear Fisheries, I felt I needed a new challenge and my target was a double-figure fish from a new venue. The venue I chose was part of Medway Valley Fisheries, which also offered the chance of a fish to beat my personal best of 11lb 7oz. I could hardly wait to cast a line in the Garden of England and as I did a battle with the four motorways to get there I had no idea how my season would unfold.

FISHING MADE EASY

On my first trip I was thrilled to land a 10lb 2oz fish on only the second night of my session, already I felt the decision to travel to Kent had been justified. The following week I fished a different lake on the complex and caught more good tench, including a couple of nine pounders. A week later and I returned to the first lake I fished, after much deliberation I chose a swim at the other end of the lake with the intention of targeting a gravel bar just over 60 yards out. All season I had been using the same tactics that had served me so well at Linear. I find the Korum Xpert 1.75lb rods coupled with Free Spool reels loaded with 10lb Xpert Reel Line cover most tench fishing situations. This might sound heavy to some but bear in mind that I’m

targeting big fish in waters with lots of weed, marginal trees and gravel bars, I want to avoid tale of the one that got away! Unless I’m fishing very close in, my favoured terminal tackle is a 2oz Combi Feeder and a helicopter rig with short hooklengths tied using Xpert Power Mono and Xpert Specimen hooks. I’ve been using the Xpert Specimen hooks in sizes 14 to 10 for three seasons and find them superb. I’ve caught well over 250 tench, mostly over 5lb, on these hooks and have only lost one to a hook pull! When feeder fishing on gravel pits and casting to a particular feature, one of the most important factors between success and failure is accurate casting. In the past I used to walk my rigs out along the bank and mark them with Avid Marker Elastic. Now I use a much easier method by using Avid Yard Sticks. These allow you to mark your line very precisely, ensuring your rigs are landing in exactly the same spot. I mark the line at the rod tip which makes it easy to see where the elastic is and you don’t need to clip up each time as, with practice, you can stop the feeder as you hear the elastic pass through the rod rings. If you ensure that your cast is in line with a suitable far bank marker the feeder should land within inches every time! The trip got off to a good start with a 9lb 13oz fish on the first morning and incredibly the next two bites both produced double figure tench. This set the tone for a session that just got better and better. To cut what could be a very long story short, I banked over thirty tench and by the last morning of my trip I had landed seven tench over the magical 10lb mark. Even then the best was yet to come. I was playing a big fish, my good friend Paul Thompson was stood beside me and remarked, “It’s got big shoulders, Dai,” as it rolled a few yards from the net. As it came to the net it’s head cleared the water and I retorted, “It has a big mouth too!” On the bank it was clear it had “big everything” and when the scales settled on 13lb 3oz Paul told me that I had just beaten his Tenchfishers’ record! The fish was in a beautiful condition and had classic bottle green flanks and a bright yellow belly, making it the best icing imaginable on top of what was a ridiculously big cake!

DAI GRIBBLE The Best Season Ever

I made the decision as I packed up and returned to my car that I wouldn’t fish on this lake again as after this catch anything else there would be a case of after the Lord Mayor’s show. It was time to allow others to enjoy the fantastic sport on offer. The following week my phone was red hot and it really came home to me the significance of this catch when Phil Jackson, President of Tenchfishers, said he thought it was the best catch of big tench ever made. W ith a good amount of time left to target tench, I ended up in Cambridgeshire fishing a syndicate lake that I’d originally joined with a view to fishing for bream later on in the year. On my first trip, I located a gravel bar that looked like a good ambush point for any tench patrolling in a large open area of the lake. The lake has a reputation for being very hard, so I was relieved to get a fish in the net on my second evening, even though it was a big perch of 3lb 10oz rather than a tench. My alarm was set for first light but it wasn’t needed when just before first light I was woken by a tremendous roar of thunder. Luckily the accompanying torrential rain was very brief, as I’ve often found prolonged rain to put fish off the feed. As I had not received any further indications since the perch, I decided not to add any more bait to the swim as I thought there was likely to still be plenty of pellets and hemp in the swim. Instead, preferring to top it up by casting my feeders every hour or so. I had only had two casts when one of the bobbins twitched indicating that there were fish in the swim. Rather than recasting, I left the third rod and ten minutes later I had a bite. At first I thought I had hooked another perch, as the hooked fish came to the near shelf very easily, but as it came close it tore off and it was clearly a good fish. I was half expecting a big carp when a very big tench surfaced and was soon netted. I pegged the net in place as I prepared the unhooking cradle and scales. Looking at the fish I could see it was big and wondered if it would be a 12lb fish to fill the gap in my list of captures. What I didn’t realise at the time was that I wasn’t looking at the whole flank of the fish; part of it was under the water. As I lifted the net it felt like there were two

tench in there, it was then that I realised this wasn’t just big, it was enormous! On my scales it weighed 14lb 12oz and this weight was confirmed on my friend Mark Simmonds' scales, which had been tested just weeks earlier at a Tenchfishers meeting. I was in shock and called a local friend, Tom, who is a photographer to ask if he would do the honours. Suffice to say he arrived in no time and took some great photographs. With the help of the Angling Times staff it was later confirmed to be the biggest tench ever caught by design. I made one more trip for the tench and amazingly recaptured the same huge tench who was now an ounce heavier, along with three other double figure

the neighbouring swim as the angler was leaving later in the morning. Before I had to make a decision, I had a drop back and a 16lb 1oz bream was soon on the bank. What followed is still hard to believe as over the next 24 hours I landed two over 15lb, plus fish of 14lb 6oz, 13lb 13oz and 12lb 1oz, plus another double figure tench of 10lb 10oz. It was clear the fish couldn’t get enough of the Sonubaits 24/7 Boilies and I was developing arms like Popeye with the frequent paddling of the boat back and forth! I still thought an absolute whopper was on the cards and said as much to one of the other members of the syndicate who had come down for a chat. I actually said I thought it would be on the rod that I had just recast into the swim from the boat, I was casting for about 30 yards away to try and avoid spooking the shoal. It turned out I was wrong as the next bite came on the other rod that had been cast out some hours earlier in the dark! It proved to be the last bite of the session, but given the fish was a new personal best of 20lb 10oz, I couldn’t have cared less! Over the years I’ve landed quite a few big bream but I genuinely never expected that my previous biggest of 18lb 12oz would be beaten, let alone by nearly two pounds! Despite not fishing much over the summer, my good fortune continued with a 4lb+ eel and a 2lb+ roach from waters local to Stafford. I know the purple patch will end some time but in the meantime I’m revelling in it with a new PB chub of 7lb on my first cast for the species this season! fish! My season was just getting silly. Is there a secret to this season’s My good friend Alan Stagg joked, “You success? I am fully aware a lot of equally could catch a double in my bath at the good anglers are fishing waters local to moment!” I told him that I was trying for them, but I love the challenge of really bream now, but I had no idea that things big fish and I feel that travelling is all were about to go from the sublime to part of the challenge. My advice to the ridiculous. anyone targeting big fish is to initially The area I was targeting was a target well-stocked waters and hone gravel plateau about 180 yards from your techniques and baiting skills. Once the bank which necessitated rowing my you are confident that you can catch baits out. I had baited with a mixture in these waters you can move onto to of 2mm S-Pellets and lots of Sonubaits harder ones. Remember you won’t learn Supercrumb groundbait, but thought much sat behind stationary indicators! I had picked the wrong spot when a That said, no amount of experience and tench angler landed a big bream at skill can beat being lucky and there has first light in the adjacent swim just definitely been plenty of that in catching 30 yards out. I was lying half-awake tench and bream in the all-time top six wondering whether I should move to of each species!

ADE KIDDELL Taming the Trent

Fishing on a tidal river for the first time can be a daunting task for any angler. The fast flow and changing depths can catch unsuspecting anglers out, leaving them fishless! Korum's Ade Kiddell has been fishing this sort of venue for many years, and with a wealth of experience, we've joined him for a session to pick his brains on how he tackles a tidal river.

07.30 It is a grey, overcast morning as I make my way behind the floodbank on the Barbel Society's stretch of the River Trent at Sutton-On-Trent to join Korum barbel expert, Ade, who has fished this 1.5 mile stretch of river for a number of years and has a great knowledge of it. “I love this river, it holds a good number of specimen barbel running to over 15lb along with a number of other species, including carp, chub and bream. I'll be the first to admit that it's not the most picturesque of river sections, but the quality of the fish makes up for it! The tides will play an important part on the fishing during the day. There are certain times on each tide that will put you in a much greater chance of catching a barbel. These are usually the first two hours after high water and then the last hour after the river reaches its lowest point," explains Ade. According to Ade's table, the tide is due to reach its lowest point at 10am. The hour after this is when the fishing will kick into gear!

08.00 Fishing on the Trent can play havoc with your gear, this venue is obviously not suited to standard barbel gear. With some swims demanding 8oz feeders to be cast over 60 yards, soft rods and small reels are out, and strong rods and robust reels are the order of the day. Ade rigs up two 13ft Korum Barbel Rods with Free Spool 8000 reels and

15lb Xpert reel line. “These long rods are just the job for this sort of fishing. The length not only aids when casting big feeders to the horizon, it also allows me to keep the barbel away from the large boulders and rocks that litter the margins of the river. Should your hooklink get stuck between these rocks, it can only take one shake of a barbel's head before your hooklink parts and you watch your prized catch swim away,” an excited Ade explains.

some pellets into a groundbait bowl and soaks them in river water until they start to soften. “To start, I'll introduce my feed using the feeder. Just gently push your monkey mix into the feeder to allow the river to push the pellets out. This way you can lay down a small bed of bait that will leak off huge amounts of flavour. After four casts I will push the bait tightly into the feeder, for plenty of flavour leak and little feed,” Ade explains as he plugs his feeder.

8.25

10.00

Ade rigs both rods up with helicopter rigs created using Avid Carp Pin Down Ready-tied Leaders and Korum Carp Heli-Rig Beads. This allows Ade to quickly change hooklengths, should his hook point or the line get damaged. Helicopter rigs are also great for casting and won't tangle! “By using a leader, my reel line will last for longer as it doesn't damage as easily as mono. This cuts down the need to re-rig my rods after only a couple of fish. On a tidal river, when bites can come in short spells, this is extremely handy! I've attached a 120g large River Feeder to the end of the leader and used a 6ft hooklink of 12lb Xpert Power Mono as a hooklink,” remarks Ade.

As the Norfolk rod expected, nothing has happened after just over an hour. The river is now at its lowest part according to the tide table. “Due to being on the upstream part of the tidal Trent, there is a slight delay between the time that the river is at its lowest and when the pressure of the water flowing back into the river will be as great as the water flowing out. This is when I think the fish will switch on,” smiles Ade in anticipation.

8.45 “Having rigged up my rods, it's now time to sort out my bait. In my feeder there is only one choice – monkey mix! So what is monkey? Well, it is basically a mixture of different sizes and flavours of pellets.” The main pellet in Ade's monkey mix is Sonubiats 6mm Spicy Sausage Halibut Pellets. These pellets have a huge amount of flavour that leaks off them once in the water. There are also 4mm S-Pellet Feed and 6mm F1 Feed Pellets in the mix. Ade simply places

10.30 The extensive knowledge of Ade showed, as not half an hour after the tide had switched, the rod hooped over and Ade's bite alarms kick into life! Using his 13ft Barbel Rod, Ade is able to keep a lot of line off the water and away from the large rocks that litter the inside of the river. “This river has had a lot of man-made work done to it. These large rocks on the bank are used to protect the shape of the bank and to help prevent the bank being eroded when the river level is high. I use long rods to keep the line away from the bank and keep the fish in the main flow,” explains Ade. “The feeding window can be very small with barbel, especially on tidal rivers. With the fish safely in the net,

I'll unclip the hooklength from the Quick Change Swivel, allowing me to quickly clip on another, fill the feeder and get the rod back in the water!”

11.10

After resting the fish while Ade sorts out his weighing gear it is time to take a look at the fish. After lifting the barbel onto the scales, they settle on 10.35 a weight of 10lb 15oz, a comfortable With the first fish still in the net, the double figure fish! rod that Ade has just cast out is away “This is the reason I keep coming again, with line peeling off the spool at back to this stretch. To catch fish in good a rate of knots. An angry barbel is trying condition and as heavy as this so early on its best to rid the hook as it charges in the season is a great sign,” remarks Ade. around in the main flow of the river. On Just as the fish is being photographed, the other end of the line, Ade's partner, the right-hand rod is away. Tjitske is Tjitske battles with the fish. “This is why quickly on the rod, guiding the fish away I always take two nets!” smiles Ade. from the snags in the river. Again, this Working as a team allows Ade and fish makes its way upstream before Tjitske to fish effectively, especially tiring and sliding into the net at the end when the fishing can be so hectic! It's of Tjitske's out-stretched arm. only a matter of time before the fish is beaten and Tjitske slides the net under 11.20 This fish weighed 9lb exactly, another another barbel. Both fish were around the 6lb mark, testament to the incredible fishing that and to minimise the amount of stress can be had on the river Trent. “The last two bites have produced put on the fish, once rested, they were quickly photographed and released back fish with a combined weight of 1oz under 20lb! There's not many places you can to grow into future Trent monsters! go to get a catch like that. This river 11.00 just keeps getting better. Hopefully, we After a quick cup of tea, Ade and can catch a few more before it's time to Tjitske re-cast both rods, getting pack up!” smiles Ade as both fish swim some fresh smelling pellets into the strongly back into the river. river. Within minutes the left hand rod fished downstream in the swim is 2.00 “The fishing has completely stopped away. A heavy fish slowly makes its way upstream with the rod bent double. now. It has been a number of hours since “This fish feels much better, it's a the last fish. And I really thought that the heavy weight on the end and usually a barbel would continue coming. The bream fish swimming upstream is a good sign have been a bit of a nuisance, but soon it will be time to feed when the river stops.” that it is a bit bigger!” Ade mixes up a tin of Sonubaits After a dogged fight under the rod top a much bigger barbel rolls over the Hemp + Tigers, Spicy Sausage Halibut waiting net. “That's more like it,” beams Pellets, Corn and Meat Chunks and some small hemp pellets to feed into the swim. The flow of the river has virtually stopped now, this is the best time to feed the river when the flow is at its lowest. The Norfolk rod baits up using an Avid Carp Solid Spod. This may sound completely bonkers, spodding on a river, but it's often the best way to introduce large amounts of bait into the swim quickly. Plenty of bait is put into the swim, allowing loads of smell to travel downstream. “Spodding is extremely effective on lakes, so why not do the same when the river stops flowing! I can get loads of bait into the swim easily with a spod.”

After an uneventful afternoon, giving Ade time to top up his rig board and make up some fresh bait, the tide reached it's highest level at 4.40pm. Not long after, the barbel went into feeding mode, with Ade and Tjitske landing a succession of other fish on the Sonubaits Crab Pellet O's. “The importance of tides is very apparent on when the fish will feed. You will get short windows that you have to make the most of, otherwise your fishing may suffer! I've caught plenty of fish and had a great day, and you can easily do the same by following the advice that we've shown. Now I've got to make the long drive back to Norfolk!” concludes Ade. korum.co.uk

CATCH MORE Baits for Barbel

Score with sausage

The Spicy Sausage flavour has caught a huge number of barbel over the years. The strong meaty smell drives the fish wild whatever the conditions. Mixed with a small amount of water at the start of the session, these pellets will absorb the water and stick together when squeezed into a River Feeder.

Give 'em a pasting Paste has a number of uses when fishing for barbel. You can wrap it around your Pellet O's or oozing hookbaits, push it into a Paste Cage or even mould it into the middle of a K-Grip Swivel lead! Barbel and Carp Paste is a great way of pumping huge amounts of flavour into the swim, with very little feed.

Forget luncheon meat, you need Lava meat. Having cut up a tin of meat, place it into a plastic bag, add a squeeze of Spicy Sausage Lava and give the bag a shake. You'll soon have a bag full of oozing meat chunks that will leak flavour down the river. A great choice of bait when the river is very coloured or carrying extra water.

Hole in one!

THE BAIT YOU CHOSE FOR BARBEL FISHING CAN BE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A BUMPER DAY'S FISHING, OR A BLANK!

4

These Barbel & Carp Mini Oozing Pellets ooze huge amounts of flavour into the river. Once in the water you can see the flavours leaking off downstream to pull the barbel up the flavour trail and to your hookbait. The dark Hemp and Halibut flavour are perfect for smaller clear rivers, while the lighter hookbaits stand out well on larger, or deeper rivers.

Take the time and effort out of drilling pellets, these pre-drilled pellets simply ooze flavours that barbel love! Pellet O's are the perfect hookbait on bright days when the river is running clearer and on busy day-ticket stretches of rivers a smaller 8mm Pellet O will often outscore other hookbaits.

That lucky angler is Korum's Kevin Durman, the venue – Furzton lake. We've given him five hours to catch a carp from the 70 acre park lake – can he do it?

Korum Braided Hair Rig onto his line, ties just one knot, to connect his hooklength and attaches a 2oz K Flat Swivel lead. The flat lead will help the Kent rod to keep his rig still and not roll should the rig land on the edge of the marginal shelf.

As Kevin's spot has flattened off the wind over where his bait is, he has more confidence in getting a bite.

Time's up! Kevin has fished hard to catch a carp in unfavourable conditions from a new venue today. His tactics have showed that by keeping mobile and attentive you will catch more fish. “It's not been easy today. I've had to work harder than I would have expected to catch a fish today. The hour I spent this morning looking for signs of fish definitely increased my chances of catching and I'd advise every angler to do this, no matter what species you are fishing for. Get out there and enjoy some day-ticket success!”

11.45AM Sure enough, the slick from the baited area was from a carp. Suddenly the Free Spool 6000 kicks into life, and the line is peeling from the spool at a rate of knots. “There we go! I knew it wouldn't be long before we got a bite. With the sun beaming down I was slightly worried about this putting the carp off, but it looks like there are a few fish wanting to feed!” The angry carp on the end tries its best to get away, but is soon wallowing on the surface, ready to be slipped into the waiting net. “Challenge complete!”

g n i b Maggots can often be an unbeatable bait in the autumn. We join Chris Ponsford as he reveals his top maggot fishing tactics....

Ever since I was a boy, maggots have been a bait that never fails for me. Whether fishing for tiny fish on a canal, to fishing for specimen fish such as big chub, barbel or tench, you can rely on a maggot to catch a fish. These little grubs are often one of the first baits on an angler's bait list. There's a number of ways that you

030

2016

can use maggots in your fishing, but I've been using one particular method, the Grub Feeder, that stands out to me having produced a number of fantastic catches throughout the year! Fishing with maggot feeders often ends up with maggots crawling all over your lap, or side tray, having made the great escape while you try to fill the

feeder through a tiny hole in the top – not anymore! Grub Feeders feature a totally new concept, allowing you to open the feeder from the side, like a clamshell, allowing for easy opening and filling. It also makes them extremely aerodynamic, cutting through the air with ease. I can use a short hooklink with the Grub Feeders, giving me great

hooking ability compared to other maggot feeder presentations.

BAIT SELECTION This is the easy part. The most difficult part of choosing my bait, is deciding which colour maggots to pick! My personal preference is mixed maggots, of which I will bring three pints.

CHRIS PONSFORD Get Them Grubbing

This may sound like a lot to some anglers, but I'd rather take some home and freeze them, then I have bait for a future session and don't get caught short and have to pack up because I've run out of bait! I try to visit the tackle shop the night before I go fishing. This way I've got the freshest bait available when I get to the bank. With natural baits, FISHING MADE EASY

such as maggots and worms, I find this very important. Once at home, I'll riddle off any dust and dirt from the maggots and place them into a large bowl. This gives them plenty of room to breath and makes sure that you don't turn up to the lake in the morning with a maggot box full of wet, soggy maggots!

Over the top of my maggots, I will sprinkle a good helping of Sonubaits Flavour Shaker. Which flavour I use will depend on what species I am targeting, but as a rule I use F1 for tench and bream, Tiger Fish for carp and Cheesy Garlic for chub and barbel. These Flavour Shakers are perfect for giving your maggots extra flavour, making them even more enticing

to the fish. To make sure they take on as much of the flavour as possible I add the Flavour Shaker the night before. This way the maggots will be sat in the flavour all night. All I need to do is place the maggots in a 3 pint bait tub in the morning when I transport them to the lake. As well as the maggots I'll bring along a small korum.co.uk

Get Them Grubbing CHRIS PONSFORD tub of worms, these are just for use as hookbaits in case I get any problems with tiny fish!

GET RIGGING As I touched on earlier, I've been using a Grub Feeder to great success this year. It has become my go-to method for catching bigger fish on maggots, especially tench! These feeders fly through the air with ease, allowing me to use lighter rods as I don't need to pump a heavy feeder through the air. I've opted for an 11ft Korum Feeder rod today, coupled with a Front Force 4000 reel. Onto the reel I've got my trusty 6lb Xpert Reel Line. This line is as tough as old boots and will withstand loads of abuse, perfect for hard fighting species. Onto the line I've slid a Mini Grub

Feeder and stopped it with the Quick Change Bead supplied free in the packet. The Quick Change Bead is perfect for allowing me to change the hooklink quickly, should my hook become blunt after catching a few fish. I've opted for a 30g Mini Grub Feeder because the lake is not fishing extremely well at the moment, so I don't want to put lots of bait in the swim to start and risk overfeeding it. By using a small feeder you can easily regulate the amount of feed going into the swim. If you think the fish aren't really feeding, leave the feeder in the water for longer, but should the fish want some grub, you can cast regularly to put more bait in. Onto the Quick Change Bead I'll attach my chosen hooklink, of which today it will be a CS Hook To Nylon in either the Pellet/Maggot pattern, or Worm/Caster pattern, depending on the hookbait that I am using. All I do is tie another loop in the hooklink, to shorten it, improving the self-hooking ability of the feeder.

THE SESSION Today I'm at Dudmaston Hall Lake; a stunning estate lake that is run by Kinver Freeliners Angling Club. This lake is quite special, in that it holds no carp! The main stocks of the lake are tench, with other species present such as eels, roach, perch and pike. I've decided to try and catch a few of the lakes tench today. After arriving, I made the walk to my peg and proceeded to get my tackle ready. In front of this swim is a couple of weed beds just as the lake slopes away into the deeper water. Fishing at about 30 yards, the lakebed is clear of weed, allowing me to present my bait and hookbait effectively. The water is a little deeper here, at around 8ft. Starting off I was recasting my feeder every 5 minutes, it's important to put a little bit of bait in the swim to attract the attention of any passing fish. Once I've made 10 casts, I'll leave the feeder in for longer, that is, if the fish haven't turned up. Three red maggots was my first hookbait. This little bunch of grubs really stands out from the other maggots when I tested it in the margins – something I strongly suggest you do! Knowing exactly what your bait looks like on the bottom will give you more confidence when it is out in the lakebed. On my 8th cast, the tip on my Korum 10ft Feeder rod started to knock, before

032

2016

CHRIS PONSFORD Get Them Grubbing pulling round, signalling that a fish had picked up my hookbait! On lifting the rod it was obvious that this wasn't a tench. The culprit was a small roach; at least there were fish in the swim. This was my only small fish before my target species arrived. Soon there were plenty of tench visiting the swim and I had a run of three fish. Each bite had me backwinding like a mad man as an angry tench tore off across the lake.

Guiding the fish around the marginal weed beds, I eventually slid them over the net. Each fish was around the same size, 4lb of slippery tinca! I switched my hooklink to a size 14 Worm/Caster CS Hook to Nylon and slid two small sections of worm onto a hook to keep the fish coming. After a short while the tip pulled round again; this time a larger tench was hooked. After a long fight, with the

fish burying its head in the weed twice, I eventually managed to get the fish over the net. This hard fighting male tench of over 5lb is a welcome addition to the net. By occasionally switching hookbaits, I managed to keep the tench feeding in the swim all day. The maggot is a simple bait, but one that can catch any fish that swims when used correctly. Give these tactics a try and you'll soon have a net of fish like this!

FISHING MADE EASY

There’s nothing worse than reeling in a tangled rig, knowing that your bait has been sat in the water, not fishing effectively – especially if it’s been out for a while! It’s a problem that a huge number of anglers face every time they go fishing. There’s a lot written and spoken about having confidence in your fishing, in your bait and in your rigs. Knowing that your rig is sat waiting for the carp of your dreams to rock up over your hookbait will make your time on the bank more enjoyable! We all worry about how our hook and hookbait is sitting in the water. Some use a tank to test their rigs at home, others use the margins of the lake, others sit on their bedchair holding up the rig and pretending that it is sitting in the water; but how many pay attention to the antitangle properties of their rigs? Like many others, I test my rigs in the margins before I cast, but I know for certain that my rigs won’t tangle on the cast. There are a number of reasons why your rigs can end up wrapped up around the leader. Here are a couple of reasons that I’m going to explain, why they happen and how they can easily be avoided.

SLOW IT DOWN The most common way to ensure your rig lands in a useless heap on the bottom of the lake is one that I see very often. After launching a lead to the horizon this angler simply waits for the splash as their carefully tied rig lands in a huge pile on the lakebed. This angler hasn’t even thought about his rig which on impact with the water will catapult back up the leader, wrapping around and falling to the lake bed in one big heap. This one is an easy fix; after punching out your lead to your spot, watch the rig as it travels through the air. Using your index finger, slowly feather the line leaving the spool and just before the rig hits the water, trap the line to stop the rig. This ensures that your hookbait and lead are separated upon impact with the water. It’s easy to do, and cuts out the main cause of tangled rigs! You can also use the line clip on your reel to the same effect. By hitting the clip just above the water, you can stop the rig, separating the hookbait and lead allowing the rig to land in a controlled manner. This isn't the only positive to stopping the rig. It also greatly reduces korum.co.uk

037

Turn the Table on Tangles ADAM FIRTH the amount of disturbance and noise that your rig makes upon impact with the surface of the water – that can only be a good thing!

SUPPLE OR STIFF Your choice of hooklink material can play a big part in rigs tangling. Stiffer mono or fluorocarbon hooklinks are harder to tangle due to the nature of the materials. They won’t fold back over easily and generally kick away from any swivel or clip that they are attached to. So why don’t we use stiff materials for everything? Well, they do have some disadvantages. They’re not effective in weedy swims often sticking up, making your rig act unnaturally. Supple braided hooklink materials are easier to tangle when casting. Their soft properties don’t kick away from the lead, and fold back up the leader easily on the cast. They do offer other advantages over stiffer materials and can be much more versatile in their use. I like an element of stiffness in my rigs. It gives me much more confidence that the rig will be kicked away from my leader and even if the hookbait gets rejected by a carp, it will still be sat waiting for the next carp to come along. Anti-Tangle Sleeves are one of the easiest ways to cut down on tangles by creating a stiff section coming off the leadclip, or swivel on a helicopter rig. When using mono or stiff filament

how to

I opt for small Anti-Tangle Sleeves, but with braided hooklinks or longer rigs it’s always a large Anti-Tangle Sleeve. I use these on whatever lead arrangement that I am using.

HELI-RIGS AND HOOKLINKS Helicopter rigs have been around for decades, their design is perfect for stopping rigs tangling. The rig will effortlessly rotate around the leader or main line, stopping the rig from ending up in a heap on the lakebed. They also have the advantage of the lead being at the front on the cast; making it the perfect choice for casting to longer ranges. You can use them with a long or short hooklink, with a Pop Up, balanced Wafter or a bottom bait, in the margins, or at long range, whatever the style of fishing, it can be done with a helicopter rig. I use Korum Anti-Tangle Hair Rigs for lots of my fishing. These pre-tied rigs include everything I need to create a rig set-up that won't tangle, in one packet! Included in the packet is a Heli Bead. This specifically designed bead is essential for the rig to work effectively. Its longer tail that the swivel of the rig sits on eradicates the damage that fishing a naked chod rig or helicopter rig on the line can create. When playing fish this can put a lot of stress onto your line, and with a heavy lead swinging around underneath, this can often end in disaster. These rigs couldn’t be any easier to

The amount of movement and rotation of the rig makes the helicopter a perfect choice for using with a stiffer rig. The rig will easily rotate around your main line or leader in the air, not giving the rig a chance to twist and tangle up. After threading on the rig and

DAI GRIBBLE Master the Method

Master the

Method Method Feeder fishing is an incredible commercial tactic. Learn how to master the Method with Dai Gribble. If I was only allowed one tactic to catch a carp, it would be the Method! This style of fishing allows you to present your hook and hookbait right in the middle of a mouthful-sized pile of feed. What could be better than that? The Method has probably accounted for more carp than any other tactic out there! The biggest problem with Method feeder fishing, is that you need to make sure that you bait is well mixed before you fish. Your pellets need to be wetted correctly, your groundbait needs to be mixed well, and I see lots of anglers on the bank struggling to keep the bait on the feeder during the cast. This is where the Easy Method feeder comes in! If you're having problems with your bait coming off on the cast, or you want to add plenty of feed into your groundbait, the Easy Method is the simple choice to make your fishing more effective! FISHING MADE EASY

BAFFLED BY BAIT? Bait mixes are a very personal thing in fishing and lots of anglers use varying amounts of different baits. When targeting carp early in the year, I like to use Sonubaits 2mm Stiki Pellets. All you need to do is add 150ml of water to these pellets, give them a good mix and you're ready to get fishing. I've also added some casters into the mix to try and attract a range of species. As the water gets warmer I'll make the switch to a fishmeal groundbait, Sonubaits Maggot Fishmeal is perfect, and into this I can add other baits such as F1 Corn, pellets or hemp to increase the feed content in the swim. Maggot Fishmeal is a great groundbait to use with the Easy Method Feeder, it contains plenty of crushed maggots, that fish love and is a great groundbait to carry lots of other particles. My favourite hookbait for Method feeder fishing is the Band'um. These dumbell shaped hookbaits are easy to attach to a bait band. I start with a bright colour, often the bright pink Krill Band'ums, but I carry a couple of tubs for a change. You will sometimes find that a natural coloured bait, such as the F1 Band'um is the best colour on certain days. It is worth taking a couple of different options and work out what the fish prefer when you are at the venue.

RIGGING UP

BE ACCURATE!

The Method is possibly the easiest tactic to rig up for! All you need to do is slide the Easy Method Feeder onto your line, tie on a Quickchange Bead and attach your hooklength! I choose the weight of my feeder depending on the distance that I need to fish. For close range fishing up to 20 yards I prefer the 15g feeder. Most of the time a 30g feeder is the best weight for casting up to 40 yards and also stopping the feeder moving when it is on the bottom. I use a 10ft Korum Feeder rod for this style of fishing. It is the perfect length for fishing on a small lake and its through action allows me to be sure that I won't lose the fish under the rod tip as they make a lunge for freedom! Coupled with a Front Force 4000 reel and 8lb Xpert Reel Line this is the perfect set-up for all feeder fishing on commercial venues.

Feeder fishing, especially on the Method is all about being accurate. You are trying to build up a small pile of bait over which the fish will feed. Casting to the same spot will keep the fish concentrated and essentially allow you to get bites quicker as the fish will have a smaller area to search out your hookbait. Using the clip on reel will stop you from landing your feeder in the trees when fishing up to islands. It also means your feeder lands at the same distance each time it hits the water, it's just down to you to get the aim right! Pick a marker on the far bank, a tree trunk, bush or something that you can aim at. As long as you cast over head, looking at the marker and use the clip you should be in for a bumper day's fishing. All you need to do is fill up the Easy Method Feeder, cast out and wait for the rod tip to pull around with an angry fish on the end!

Chasing Chub ROMAN BUCZYNSKI

a h C C

g n i s

b u h

We've joined Roman Buczynski to find out how he goes about targeting a specimen chub

Winter is the perfect time of year to target big chub. These big blocks of silver are not only known for being greedy, they're also one species that will feed however cold the weather gets. If you need to get a fishing fix when everywhere is frozen – get down to your local river! Big chub can often live in very tiny waters, so just because you don't live next to a big river, doesn't mean there won't be any big chub. Check out local clubs and their websites and ask in your tackle shop. You may be surprised just how big the chub are in your local river. So where do you start when targeting a river? After buying a club ticket, I'll often spend time walking the river, sometimes without taking my tackle. By walking the stretches you can look for likely looking spots, snags or overhangs which will save you time when you reach the river with your rods. Chub love sitting at the back of the snags and tucked underneath overhangs, you've just got to persuade them to come out and eat!

050

2016

WHAT GEAR? The tackle to target chub is simple, there's nothing complicated about the rigs, tackle or bait for catching them. I use a simple running rig with a small feeder and 2ft hooklength. That's as difficult as it gets. My rod of choice is a 12ft Korum Feeder rod coupled with a KMR 4000 reel loaded with 6lb reel line. This longer rod gives me the ability to lever fish away from snags, whether in the river, or marginal snags. I've opted to use the heavier 1.5oz tip for all of my chub fishing. This tip is better in the flow of the river. Sliding on the reel line is a Korum Feedabead. This sliding clip allows me to quickly change the size or weight of my feeder depending on what is happening with the fishing. If I need to add more weight due to increased flow, I can do

it without tackling down the whole rig! I'll stop the Feedabead with a Dura Bead which allows quick changing of my hooklength. The hooklink is 60cm of 0.17mm Reflo Power, or 4lb Xpert Power Mono if the river is running low, tied directly to a size 8 Xpert Specialist hook. This makes a super simple chub rig that I can use in any river conditions! Feeder size is all dependant on the flow of the river. If the river is low my first choice of feeder will be a Mesh Feeder. The extra holes allow the bread to easily exit the feeder to pull the chub up to my hookbait. If the river is running fast, or the swim is deep I will opt for an Open End Feeder. This feeder will hold the bait in the feeder for longer, making the bait in your feeder last longer in the fast flow.

Chasing Chub ROMAN BUCZYNSKI

BAITING UP Bread makes up the base of my bait for chub. For a full day's fishing, two loaves are all I need. The night before I planning on fishing is spent preparing the bait, I'll stick one whole loaf of bread into a blender until the bread has been chopped into tiny pieces. This gives me enough liquidised bread to form the main part of my mix. Sonubaits Cheesy Garlic Crush and Sonubaits Natural Hemp both add to the pulling power of the mix,

how to

creating a stinky bed of highly visible bait for the chub to find. Before fishing in a swim I'll bait up with a couple of small handfuls of the bread mix, giving the chub time to work up the swim to my bait. I will spend some time at the start of my session walking along the stretch I intend to fish, putting some bait into a few likely spots along the way. I've got three options for hookbaits when chub fishing; paste, breadflake and

Set up Roman's Simple Chub Rig

1 Slide a Korum Feedabead onto your reel line 2 Follow this with a Korum Dura Bead 3 Tie on the Dura Clip to your reel line 4 Clip your chosen feeder onto the Feedabead 5 Attach your hooklink to the Dura Bead Clip and cover with a short anti-tangle sleeve 6 Fill your feeder, attach your hookbait and catch a chub!

how to make

Roman's Stinky Chub Bread Mix

1 Add the liquidised bread into a bucket 2 Pour a good helping of Sonubaits Cheesy Garlic Crush into the bucket 3 Sonubaits Hemp is the next bait to be added 4 Give it all a good mix and you'll have a super stinky chub mix

lobworms. These three baits are loved by chub. I'll start with breadflake, this is a highly visible bait and the chub will quickly grab a piece floating around in the flow. Rip off a 50 pence piece sized chunk from a slice, fold the edge over, slide your hook into the bread before folding it around the shank of the hook to secure it; this will help the bread stay on for longer! A lobworm can be great for chub, but may sometimes attract the attention of small perch if they are present in the swim. These big worms can often produce a bite on the most difficult of days and its always worth putting a tub into your bag.

WHERE TO FISH? Once you've sorted your tackle and bait it's time to get fishing! Look for swims with plenty of cover to hold fish, weir pools, deep holes and big overhanging bushes will be good spots to target. If these features are on the nearside bank you can use this to your advantage. Cast tight to the edge of the overhang or snag and hold the line tight. The feeder should swing on a tight line, being pushed under the overhang by the flow of the river. You can then place your rod on the rest, knowing that your feeder is sat nearer to where the chub feel comfortable to feed. I'll re-cast the feeder every 20 minutes. This will keep a steady stream of bait going through the swim pulling the chub further out of the snags and hopefully to your hookbait. I'll be looking to spend a maximum of 45 minutes to one hour in each swim. If you've not had any indication of a fish being present within this time, up sticks and try another swim! If a chub is at home, you should get a bite pretty soon.

When targeting perch there perch like to reside in. to employ a short length of monofilament are two tactics that I employ - dropshot So, where do you start when going jig or even better, a fluorocarbon leader to and jig fishing. The latter is often the best fishing? First of all you'll need a rod and help make your lure look more realistic, way to find the fish. reel. The rod needs to have a fast, but and also to cushion the strike. This way A very mobile tactic, jig fishing sensitive tip, with enough backbone to you'll not only get more bites, but you

GARY KNOWLES Catch Bigger Perch

will definitely land more fish. At the end of my leader is a small clip to allow quick and easy changing of my jig head. On the lure front I will always carry a range of different sizes and colours. Perch can be extremely picky and will often have a preference of colour or size, on different days. As a general rule of thumb, when the water is clear and the visibility is good I like to pick a natural looking lure, something that looks like what the perch will be feeding on, be this rudd, roach or even small perch. Matching the hatch can be the key to bumper catches in clear water. When targeting a venue with murky water, such as a commercial, river, or coloured canal, I will do the opposite. I'll normally be found reaching for the bright colours, trying to 'attract' the perch. A fire tiger pattern or my personal favourite, the goldfish, are brilliant for coloured water predators. I've got bites in waters with only a couple of inches of visibility with these brightly coloured lures. In really deep water a lighter coloured lure, such as the roach pattern from the Korum Jig Kit Natural, or the red head lure from the Snapper Jig Kit Fluoro will help give the predators something to home in on! Once you're all rigged up it's time to get fishing! After casting out your lure, let it sink down to the bottom before using the rod tip to twitch the lure back, jumping it along the bottom, trying to imitate a wounded fish. Use the reel to take up the slack in the line, ensuring that the lure sinks on a tight line. The fall of the lure back to the bottom is when the perch love to engulf your jig. The great thing about fishing with jigs, is that you don't have to only fish near the bottom! FISHING MADE EASY

By starting your retrieve immediately you can keep the lure working off the bottom. By counting how long it takes for your lure to hit the bottom you can have a good idea of how deep you will be fishing. The perch may want to chase a bait that is moving quickly well off the bottom. Because of the faster nature of jigging, compared to dropshotting, you will be able to search out a venue to find where the perch are hiding. Use this to your advantage – get out there and catch more fish! korum.co.uk

The Do's and Don'ts of Dropshotting PHIL SPINKS

Phil Spinks explains the dos and don’ts of this simple yet effective style of fishing. To a beginner, Dropshot fishing may seem like a method that you need a degree to master, I was in the same boat when I was first shown it. I regularly see anglers on the bank who think that they're dropshotting, in reality they’re not; what they are actually doing is jigging – badly. This method is relatively new to the UK, so the information relating dropshotting to UK styles of fishing for perch and zander is extremely limited. This is definitely the reason for people doing things wrong! So here’s some of the things I’ve learnt while dropshotting.

REEL IN At the top of the list of things I see people doing while ‘dropshotting’ that they shouldn’t be doing is reeling in! This method isn’t like retrieving a spinner or a crankbait. Dropshotting is a slow method and one that excels when the fish are close to cover or want the lure to be fished slowly. After casting or lowering your rig into to your chosen spot, the idea is to not move the Dropshot lead. By working the slack or braided reel line with the sensitive rod tip you will be able to impart action into the lure without having to wind. By simply tapping your index finger against the blank you can make a Dropshot lure work. The lead will move slightly and can bounce back should it come into contact with stones or obstructions on the bottom of the river, canal or lake. All you need to do is carefully take up the slack with the reel handle. If you’re making a full rotation of the reel handle in less than 10 seconds, you’re fishing too fast.

RETURN FISH STRAIGHT AWAY I often keep the fish I catch for a shot time either in a Keepnet or landing net. As well as giving the fish a chance to recover fully, I think that returning fish straight away can sometimes be detrimental to your catches. I’ve found that by retaining the fish for a short while, I can often get myself an extra bite or two, and sometimes this can equal in bigger fish! The snapper net is nice and deep to allow the fish to safely sit in the net, if the bank allows.

] USE BRAID! Using the right tackle and reel line will make your Dropshot fishing ten times more effective, this method is all about feel. The more feel you have through the rod and through your line will allow you to put more fish onto the bank. For this reason I will use nothing other than braid on my reel. Braid has no stretch and will transmit anything on the business end up though to your hands! Its also extremely thin for the breaking strain, aiding your casting and cutting through the water easily. The red colour of the braid allows you to spot any tiny pulls or movements in the line that may have occurred without you feeling the full bite. Attached to the end of my braid is a fluorocarbon leader. Fluorocarbon has a small amount of stretch to cushion the strike, and also makes the business end almost invisible to the fish. korum.co.uk

FISH CLOSE IN

Slopes, shelves and walls and reed beds provide loads of cover to big fish; especially the nearside margin, often neglected by many anglers. These are the features that you spend time fishing to on the other side of the canal or on a small commercial, so don’t worry about spending time fishing around the nearside edge or margins. Even on busy towpaths and river banks, big predators will sit very close to the bank. Some of my biggest fish have come while fishing the rig only inches from my feet. Use your index finger on the braid to give you extra feel for delicate bites when fishing under the rod tip. Often you will only feel a slight pluck on the braid through your finger!

[don't] CONFUSE YOURSELF! Dropshotting isn’t a difficult method. You’ll soon get to grips with how to work your lures. Look at your lures in the margins and watch how they work before casting them out. There may be a certain type of movement in your rod tip that will give your lure a good action. If you can’t, or don’t trust yourself to tie a Palomar knot, get yourself some spin-style hooks. I use these hooks for my own Dropshot fishing; I find the Palomar knot can twist when you’re fishing. I was wasting time by twisting the knot back so that my lure looked better in the water. With a spin-style hook the lure and hook will always sit straight in the water. It gives me more fishing time and makes me feel much more confident when I’m working my lure. The hooks supplied with the Korum Dropshot kit are the ideal choice, and it also comes with weights and soft lures. I always start with my weight between 8” and 12” off the bottom. It’s a good starting point to put the lure in sight of the fish, and look like a bait fish. The beauty of the Dropshot weights included in the kit is that you can change the depth in seconds. I can try working the lure as little as 3 inches off the bottom, or lengthen it to up to 18 inches.
