Your wedding day is one of the most important days of your life. (And it is for me too! )
I treat wedding photography like an artist would handle a painting- with love, precision, and vision. Your wedding should not just be photographed. It should be immortalized.
Let me capture your fairytale.
Editor ' s Letter
Bohemian (noun.): A person, musician, artist or writer who lives a free spirited life and believes in truth, freedom and love.
Dear Readers, With the hectic and fashion-filled month of September behind us, it feels good to sit back and enjoy the season’s changes. We welcome you to our November Issue, an issue that honors a new lifestyle that mod-culture has rapidly taken a liking to. This season, we were inspired to theme our magazine, The Bohemian Issue. When I think of the term bohemian, I think of talent and creativity. I think of the lifestyle itself. I think of people breaking the rules and living life on their own terms. I think of the entrepreneurs, artists, writers and the goal diggers. When I look at the people I work with, each an artist, I look to their passion and what inspires their creations. In this issue, we’ve acquired a new look at what it means to live free. We’ve rounded up our list of organic brands that have made waves in business over the past year, eco-chic and indigenous fashions followed by style-savvy professionals who have taken a leap in following their dreams with the newly launched #StyleYourLife campaign presented by CEO Stephanie Nickolich. Each artist who has contributed to this issue, whether a photographer, an entrepreneur, a stylist or an event planner, has overlooked society’s definition of the norm profession and has created a life that feeds their passion. With style, CHARISSA LAUREN Editor-in-Chief @CharissaLauren on Twitter

Cover Girl
Healthy Living with Ashley McLaughlin By: Charissa Lauren
Sitting at Jacqueline’s Salon on a breezy fall day in Pittsburgh, Ashley is in full hair and makeup preparing for her first magazine editorial. I, of course, stumbled in late and lost with boxes of the day’s fashions, my attention immediately directed to the shoot’s model. Though surrounded by eager stylists and fast-paced PR gal’s, Ashley’s cool, calm, collected aura is perhaps the most noticeable of her personality. Relaxed and modest, we knew instantly that she was the perfect representation for our November issue. I envisioned our issue’s cover girl to serve as an inspiration for women, but, of course could also pull off the boho-chic look naturally. This is Ashley McLaughlin. A twenty-four-year-old who exceeds her expectations and strives to be the best person she can be, while encouraging others to live a healthy life.
“Ashley’s cool, calm, collected aura is perhaps the most noticeable of her personality.” After graduating with her Nutrition degree from West Virginia University and filling her resume with career advances from the fitness and nutrition industry, Ashley’s next move was to educate, “I feel that every person is given a special gift in this life and I have been very lucky to find that mine can also double as my career. lic Health Nutritionist, a Fitness and Health Instructor (specializing in kickboxing), an Educator, an Entrepreneur, a Philanthropist, an Author, and Motivational Speaker. Organic Brand Beauty Wrap-up By: Charissa Lauren
Nature’s Secret:
Natural skincare products with a twist: Meet Zoe Natural Creations, a South Carolina based skincare brand delivering handcrafted products with nourishing organic ingredients. Utilizing the finest herbs, flowers, spices, and essential oils, the products we’ve tested have definitely smelled completely natural. Offering an assortment of soaps, balms, butters and scrubs, the skincare shop has an urban feel that makes the shopping and sampling experience enjoyable. “We’re passionate about creating body care products that look, feel and smell great and that you don’t have to worry about putting on your skin, with ingredient lists you can pronounce,” owner Shawna Wilkinson says. The awesome family-run business was fortunate to let the Pretty Living Gals sample the Lemon Rosemary Sugar Body Scrub, Lemongrass Shea Butter and even sent the soothing aromatherapy pillow made with luxurious lavender to ease sleep. Of the several products we’ve tried, we definitely found a few keepers that will be making it to the print issue of Pretty Living Magazine this season. Speaking of our personal favorites, it’s fair to say that I’m never living without the flaxseed eye pillow again! We’ve sampled the pillow designed for muscle-soreness and for eye rest. I loved that the scent is comforting so it not only relaxes sore and tired eyes but helps to sooth sleep. A definite must-have for the workaholics like myself! The Lemon Rosemary Sugar Body Scrub was our second pick. Lemon is naturally known to absolutely awaken the senses with divine scents that both uplift and enhance. This is a great body scrub for morning showers in prepping for your day. Revive your senses with the refreshing and invigorating scents of lemon and rosemary: Benefits: Cane sugar helps to clean the skin’s surface, unclog pores, improve circulation, get rid of dry, dead skin, and will leave your skin smooth, moisturized and hydrated.

To Use: Apply a small amount into you hand and massage into your skin in a circular motion. A little goes a long way. Keep jar away from water. Product causes surfaces to become slippery; use with caution. Keeping it Real: Made with organic unrefined cane sugar, expeller pressed sweet almond oil, vitamin e, lemon and rosemary essential oils, lemon peel and rosemary. “We believe nourishing the outside of our bodies is as important as nourishing the inside,” Zoe Natural Creations. www.zoenaturalcreations.com
Swe ummer’s long over but that doesn’t mean can’t have our glow throughout fall and winter. We’ve recently sampled a few brands that make keeping sun-kissed skin throughout the year easy. Organic and natural ingredients combined with nature’s essential oils have been trending for quite a while in the beauty world — and we’re suckers for a great natural brand! Introducing our skincare must-haves: Meet RUTZ, a newly-launched, Pittsburghbased company we can’t seem to get enough of. Founder of RUTZ, Steph Shuler, combined her background in artistry with aromatherapy to create her own skincare line based on natural vitamin-rich ingredients. You can read about the line’s unique method in creation, HERE. Favored by the likes of local bloggers and platforms such as Whirl Magazine, the RUTZ skincare movement has been trending quite the buzz. Pretty Living was fortunate to sample a few
of the products that Pittsburgh has been chatting about —Product Pick numero uno being the Just Breathe Facial Wash. #RootedInGoodness, the facial wash is made with natural and refreshing botanicals designed to awaken the skin. Both hydrating and cleansing the skin with natural ingredients, the Facial Wash also had a soothing scent. When using a bedtime, I did notice the scent of some of the essential aromatherapy oils I typically use for comfort and soothing giving the wash a double use — great for mornings to awaken and in evenings to sooth. This must be where Steph’s aromatherapy background comes in to play! While the facial wash left skin smooth and glowing keeping your summer skin intact, the In Your Face midst works as an antibacterial and refresher over makeup during the day. This little baby was a perfect addition to the NYFW bags, while the Pretty Living gal’s headed to the big apple for fashion week. For more rooted goodness, visit www.rutzskincare.com

WELLNESS WARRIOR
BETHANY MONTECALVO Kind and talented, Bethany Montecalvo is a name to know in the film and beauty industry. As a premier makeup artist in Pittsburgh, Bethany specializes in natural beauty care and organic spray tanning. Working with Hollywood names such as Rachael McAdams, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Jake Gyllenhaal, Bethany worked as a makeup artist for movies like Southpaw, The Chair show, along with countless commercials and print work. We were lucky enough to interview Bethany in between her busy schedule. We were lucky enough to interview Bethany in between her busy schedule on set of the newest Will Smith feature, for some beauty tips and a peek at her upcoming projects. PL: Who was your favorite celebrity to work with? BM: Rachel McAdams. She's so down to earth and is into health like I am. A true beauty. PL: What is your number one piece of beauty advice? BM: If I had to choose one thing to say it would be "your body is a temple". Take care of it, feed it well, exercise it, be kind to it, love it and the rest is a piece of cake. If you do this then it makes makeup's job so much easier. PL: What are three (personal care/make up) products you can’t live without? BM: I cannot live without my [essential] oils. I use them in skin care, orally, I take them and I use them to treat problem areas on skin. Coconut oil. You can use it for blessed everything under the sun. From using on dark circles, smoothing out split ends and fly aways, oil pulling for cavities and teeth whitening, mix a heavy based lipstick with coconut oil to make a lip gloss or blush. I can go on and on for days. Finally I would say concealer. PL: What made you become passionate about living a healthy lifestyle? BM: I am Slovak, Irish, and Indian, so I remember growing up and my mom saying we are hunkies "slang" for Slovak. She said we eat and she always battled with her weight. I grew up watching my mom’s weight yo-yo! It killed me because I saw her tears and I never understood why she battled. In high school I started reading and learning because I never wanted to go through what my

mom did and I wanted to help her!
PL: What ingredient or chemical additive do you feel is most dangerous? BM: This is a tough one. I don't eat anything processed. If I can't read or understand the ingredients, I'm not eating it. If I had to pick one it would be sugar! It's equally as addictive to heroin. It's in everything and FDA fully is aware of how addictive it is so they make sure they put it in everything. PL: What are some upcoming projects you’re working on? BM: Movies, they are so fun but they take the life out of you literally. You are working 17 hour days and for that period of time, you have no life. I still love it. I love being a makeup artist for film and TV but God gave me so many passions that I have to at least try all of them once. I believe if you sit on your talents, God will take them away. I recently had a desire to do fitness modeling. I'll be a fitness model for a new athletic line coming out in Pittsburgh. I'm excited to support local Pittsburgh folks, and try on a new hat. Also, I love Hallmark movies and I always have said, I would love to do one. I met an amazing friend on my last movie and she's an animal trainer. Her dog was on "modern family". She always works the hallmark movies, so I'm happy to say one day soon I'll be able to work on that. PL: Tell us more about Holistic Hunnies? BM: The Holistic Hunnies are a huge passion for me and my girl Jamie Molinaro. We are Fierce Wellness Warriors. She came to me a few years ago to get an organic spray tan and the rest was history. I thought how awesome would it be to use my holistic health coaching and herself taught knowledge, and the girl is well educated on foods, and to make a web base series. Our goal is to educate and empower people to live a happy healthy life and "We love to make you well". We do silly little episodes or parodies of songs. We would love to do a pod cast. Please like our "The Holistic Hunnie's" Facebook page, our YouTube Channel "Bethany Montecalvo". If The Ellen show reads this. We are calling you out. We would love to go on her show and sing and dance and do a skit about Ellen and how's she's a vegan. Yay!!! Now to add the halo braid take a section from one side of the head and braid it. Then pull the braid up and over the top of your crown and pin on the other side to secure. Loosen up the braid by tugging a bit up the braid to make it more natural. FALL/WINTER 2014 16

Don’t forget contour. It’s the simplest thing and most women don’t do it, but it makes a worlds difference on your cheekbones.
Keep the lipgloss to a minimum. When taking photos for an important event, keep the lipgloss to a minimum. The reflection often catches the camera and doesn’t look as glamorous in the photos as it does in person.
Keep your makeup brushes clean. It keeps your colors more pure and vibrant on your face when it’s not mixed with yesterday’s shadow color. Also, it’s an easy way to keep your skin clear and glowing.
Use a primer. It really makes everything go on smoother and gives you that flawless look that will stay on.

Beauty and Makeup Tips from an MUA By: Angela Hathaway
Along with a change in season, weather, and wardrobe, comes a change in makeup and skincare routines. Cooler climates often mean drier, flakier skin, and the loss of that natural, summertime glow. But according to special effects makeup artist Christalee Lema, skincare is a major step in maintaining healthy, radiant skin. Even if you don’t have time for makeup, being diligent about skincare will ensure you always look fresh-faced, “Skincare…cleanse, tone, and moisturizer should happen everyday so you can have that flawless skin,” she said. And beyond skincare, Lema shares five of her favorite tips and tricks for maintaining an effortless, and fresh look for fall: Lema emphasizes the importance of setting your makeup with a powder or mist, and insists that transforming a look from subtle and officeappropriate, to sassy and fun for an evening out is as simple as swapping out a lip color or adding some shine, “My favorite way to transform my day look into night is to darken those lips and give my eyes a little shimmer and add a touch of smoky eyes, maybe another layer of mascara as well.” But regardless of what you put on your face, nothing is more important than a smile,“Be sure to wear your makeup with confidence and smile, because nothing will make it look better than you showing the world that you look good.” FALL/WINTER 2014

VEGAN Formaldehyde, toluene, phthalate, doesn’t sound like something you’d want to use on your body, does it? These are just a few of the chemicals in most nail polishes, giving it that harsh chemical odor. These chemicals pose harmful health risks like headaches, seizures, increased risk of asthma, improper thyroid function, and increased risk of cancer. Look for nail products that are 5 free…containing no formaldehyde, formaldehyde-resin, toluene, camphor or dibutyl phthalate (dbp). DBP has been shown to increase the risk of reproductive problems in male babies in utero, as well as birth defects and miscarriages.

Give Peace a Chance Kutula Kiss’ handmade jewelry helps mothers in Colombia By: Robyn Rudish-Laning It takes a distinctive accessory to boost an outfit from drab to fab. A piece that both looks good and does good, like a simple beaded bracelet that gives back to an impoverished country, is a must to elevate every ensemble. Enter Kutula Kiss, a unique fair-trade jewelry boutique. Founded in 2011 by co-owners Kathy and Cindy, Kutula Kiss is a collaborative brand whose boho-chic woven and beaded bracelets are handmade by Colombian women. Each bracelet is hand-loomed by the arti-
sans, many of whom are mothers living coffee-producing areas of Colombia. All materials used are fair-trade and purchased by the artisans when possible.
“Kutula” means peace in Fanagolo, a South African dialect. According to Kathy, the name, and the business itself, were an accident.
“We met this person from Colombia. He was representing some artisans and had found a niche in representing them. He pulled out these incredible bracelets,” Kathy recalled. “[As for the name,] we were all sitting in my partner’s kitchen and she said ‘let’s Google all the ways to say peace.’ It was such an amazing name.” “Kutula” means peace in Fanagolo, a South African dialect. It’s an amazing name for an amazing concept. Kutula Kiss isn’t a brand that out2014 sourcesFALL/WINTER its work out to foreign workers to

save money. The entire concept is built around these skilled artisans and their beautiful handcrafted jewelry. Each design is created either by Kathy and Cindy, who have backgrounds in color merchandising, or the artisans. “They’ll send us amazing prototypes of amazing designs. That’s why we’ve been able to be so successful,” Kathy explained. “It’s really about the artisans and being collaborative. It’s about connecting back to the people.” It was important to Kathy and Cindy that Kutula Kiss be a collaborative brand that incorporates the culture, ideas and designs of the artisans, who can be proud of the brand they are helping build. “We give the artisans an opportunity to market their beautiful products under a larger brand,” Kathy explained. “That lets us build this brand and focus on artisans and see what we can do.” Each artisan can work from her home, where she can spend time taking care of her family. Kathy and Cindy visit Colombia once a year to visit their artisans. This year they spent two days in the mountains above an area of heavy coffee production. The families here rely heavily on the men who work the coffee plantations, a less than profitable occupation. Coffee farmers in these areas make approximately $2,000 a year, Kathy explained. By crafting products to be sold under the Kutula Kiss brand, these women are able to help support their families. “These women contribute so much to their families and these women would not be able to have this standard of life without this,” Kathy revealed. “These women were just the happiest women. The women were able to stay at home and

they would have looms set up on their porches with their kids and parents surrounding them. It very much revolves around family. It was so inspirational.” In addition to providing a steady income for Colombian mothers, Kutula Kiss also donates a portion of the proceeds from its sales to the Barefoot Foundation, which promotes quality public education, nutrition and life tools for Colombian children. The foundation was founded in 1997 by international recording artist Shakira and operates five schools that provide education, meals and assistance to children. Since its founding, the Barefoot Foundation has helped more than 67,000 children and adults. Previously, only Kutula Kiss’ Foundation collection benefitted the Barefoot Foundation. As more collections have been added, it made sense to donate based on the sales of all products. It just fit to them, Kathy said, since they’re mothers working with mothers. Kutula Kiss’ products include six collections. The Free Spirit and Peace, formerly known as Foundation, collections are primarily deep earth tones with Japanese glass beads, Swarovski crystals and stamped charms accenting the designs. Neon threads and glass beads are the foundation for the Girl on Fire collection while the Gypsy Mama collection incorporates beautiful semi-precious turquoise & bronze glass beads into intricately woven patterns. The final two collections, Beach Babe and Layers of Grey, are perfect for pairing with seasonal outfits. Beach Babe bracelets feature vibrant colors in beachy designs, an ideal match for your favorite sundresses, and the grey tones

and metallic accents of Layers of Grey are reminiscent of a glistening winter wonderland. Although there are a number of accessory brands that donate to charities, the products are often mass-produced in factories. Each Kutula Kiss bracelet is a one-of-a-kind treasure made by a woman with a story and a family that each purchase helps to support. Kutula Kiss products may be purchased online and are primarily displayed at trade shows. Approximately 100 boutiques and salons in the United States now carry the bracelets with M. Fredricks in Los Angeles being the newest retailer. As the brand reaches more stores in North America, Kutula Kiss plans to expand into other jewelry and regions. Kathy and Cindy have begun creating necklaces with the help of a South African designer to implement in the African country. “We’re different in that we’re not made in any one place, not in a factory. We’re very much global,” Kathy said.

Indigenous
IN DI GEN OUS
By: Angela Hathaway
In an era of label-conscious consumerism and fast fashion, Lauren Anzaldua was taking a risk when she launched her socially conscious online fashion boutique, Indigenous, last year. Anzaldua said that she launched the store for the “feminine, adventurous, and free-spirited woman.” Her target customer can be found traveling the world and exploring music festivals. She craves one-of-a-kind pieces, and most importantly, she’s conscious about what she buys. “With Indigenous, I want to offer that boutique shopping experience while emphasizing products that are ethically produced and brands that contribute to society,” she said. Anzaldua said that starting her own business had been an emotional rollercoaster, and that she sometimes had to adapt to things that were not in her plans. And despite some of the struggles, she said that she’s excited for the future, “Five years from now, I see Indigenous growing with one or two brick-and-mortar locations. I would like to be in the process of launching an exclusive clothing line for Indigenous and have an established non-profit that proceeds from sales can go toward.” “For Indigenous, my mantra is ‘fashion to feel good about,’ and with this in mind I will never lose track of my original mission.” –Lauren Anzaldua To browse the many ethical and fair trade fashions visit www.shopindigenous.com

The Vagabond Queen by: Tianna Alexandre
A rockstar, blogger, and jewelry designer wrapped into one. Danielle Barbe is The Vagabond Queen. The Vagabond Queen became the brainchild of Danielle a year and a half ago, as a way to share all her artistic adventures. With music being her first love, rock n’ roll, style, art, and diverse forms of creation have helped keep her inspired along the way. With a single glance at Danielle’s blog and you’ll get a feel for her very eclectic and creative personality. Not being unfamiliar with a coloured lifestyle, The Vagabond Queen is a fortifying mixture of fashion, music, recipes, photography, and accessories galore! The Vagabond Queen online store was created for Danielle’s undying love of vintage + antiques, but also originated from her displeasure of carbon copy artist merchandising. While traveling the country on tour, she acquired several beautiful vintage pieces and called herself a collector. Danielle wears her vintage finds during photo shoots and onstage. She repurposes vintage materials into jewelry and accessories, resulting in questions from friends and fans like, “Where can I buy that?” Fans of the rockstar have always conveyed interest in Danielle’s jewelry, so she began handcrafting much of her products from vintage materials herself. This gave the jewelry designer something to do while traveling from city to city on tour and the jewelry sold out posthaste. harvesting gratitude WITH THE PURE CANDLE
By: Angela Hathaway
“Autumn is the mellower season, and what we lose in flowers, we more than gain in fruits.”
Nothing tips us off to “new beginnings” quite like the approach of Fall. The long, hot, adventurous days of summer disappear as children go back to school, temperatures drop, leaves start turning, and most importantly, everyday routines begin to shift. And as our schedules get hectic and our lives become complicated, we catch ourselves wallowing in misery and focusing on what we do not have enough of: time, money, space. Instead, let’s shift our thought process, and think about the smallest things we are grateful for. Gratitude is the embrace and appreciation of life’s simplest pleasures. For some, it is the rustle of leaves, the snuggle of a pet, the laughter of children. And for me, it’s fitting to say that I simply welcome everything autumn has to offer— it is my absolute favorite season. Temperatures drop, apple orchards are fruitful, grapes are sweeter, ocean waves crash, beach bonfires are abundant, and a certain sweet petrichor lingers through the air. That earthy, comforting scent that I so love about Fall is perfectly captured by The Pure Candle in their GRATITUDE Soy Aromatherapy Candle, which evokes a woodsy sense of warmth. The GRATITUDE candle has pure essential oils of rosewood and white spruce, which when warmed, fill the room with a grounding, forest-like aroma. GRATITUDE not only smells great, but also serves as a simple reminder to be grateful for life’s many joys. Lighting

it for a few minutes every day not only perfumes the home, but also allows you to take time to acknowledge and appreciate your blessings. It is a sure way to be thankful for the bounty that us upon us, and experience more happiness by focusing on the positive. And with a name like GRATITUDE, I feel like this candle would make the perfect gift. Bring it to a dinner party, to thank the host or hostess for having you. Give it to a friend, partner, or family member to celebrate their birthday, or simply because they’re awesome. Give it to the neighbor who looks after your home when you’re away, gift it to a mentor to thank them for all of their advice and encouragement. The GRATITUDE candle is perfect for anyone you appreciate. Also, with Thanksgiving quickly approaching, this candle will not only smell beautiful, but it will remind us that the holiday is not simply about turkey and football, but also about GRATITUDE, and savoring the simple pleasures of life. Its clean, white lines and classic glass jar, would be lovely blended into any table setting, regardless of decorating style. The soy candles have a cotton wick, and are make entirely with plant-based ingredients, so toxins and other carcinogens are not emitted in the smoke. Lighting aromatic candles is a great way to change your mood, de-stress, perfume your home, and appreciate life’s little pleasures. change your mood, de-stress, perfume your home, and appreciate life’s little pleasures. WITH THE HOLIDAYS QUICKLY APPROACHING,
a sense of excitement fills the air. There’s something about the décor, the energy, the sentiment behind symbols and rituals that evoke a childlike giddiness. The holiday season, regardless of your beliefs, is an opportunity to celebrate, to gather, to look inward, and to give thanks. The holiday season is filled with parties and celebrations—it’s exciting, it’s exhausting, but most of all, it’s a cornucopia of CHEER. Regardless of how run down you get with juggling daily routines and holiday events, there’s something about the spirit of the holidays that is cheerful. And to bring those moments into your home or office, why not light our CHEER candle, which fills the room with revitalizing and cooling peppermint, reminiscent of candy canes and other seasonal treats. Along with holiday cheer, comes holiday merriment. Being MERRY is deliciously unavoidable: grandmother bakes her famous gingerbread, mom bakes the apple pies, someone spikes the eggnog, and everyone guiltlessly indulges. Our MERRY candle perfectly captures the scents and flavors of holiday sweets. When MERRY is lit, the air is filled with a warm, yet citrusy aroma. It’s comforting, sweet, almost tasty. And with all of the cheer and merriment of the season, we often forget to look inward, and feed our personal joys. JOY is found within ourselves, and adds quality to our lives. To discover your inner JOY, warm our JOY candle, which will calm your senses, and lift your spirits. Lavender, lemongrass, and tangerine fill the room with security and sunshine—the perfect setting to reflect. As exciting as the holiday season is, it is also stressful. As days get shorter and to-do lists get longer, we forget to be grateful for life’s simple pleasures, and we fail to allow ourselves to experience a moment of PEACE. Uplift yourself and warm our PEACE candle, which will drench your soul in patchouli, clary sage, and Canadian white spruce. PEACE will clear your mind, opening it up strength, serenity, and harmony. Finally, enjoy the season! Embrace the season for the bounty of gifts that it has to offer: CHEER, JOY, MERRY, and PEACE. Things may not always be perfect, but grasp what you can, and amazing moments await in the New Year.

Step 1
Step 2
Step 1
Cut out pieces of the paper you will be using. I did about 1 1/2 inch strips but any size or shape will do depending on your preference.
Step 2
Decide how you would want to layout your pieces. This helps in making sure you cut out enough pieces and it’s easier to lay down the pieces once you know where they’re going.
Step 3 Step 3
Step 4
Using the sponge brush and Modge Podge coat the back of the piece of scrap paper first and lay it down on the surface. *Make sure your tray or plate is cleaned off before glueing anything down!
Step 4 Step 5
Fill out the spaces of the tray/plate.
Tell us how you plan on using your festival chic home decor in the comment section below or tag us when you post your own creation!
@shopindigenous
Brush on a layer of Modge Podge all over your creation after you’re finished to give it a good sealant all around for a lasting effect. Then let it dry for a good hour or so.
Step 6 Use It!
*Tip: To clean your boho chic tray use a damp cloth to wipe it off without damaging the paper. You can also add a higher-quality seal coating at the end to add more protection & durability to your tray. You can place just about anything on this beautiful boho chic home decor tray. From jewelry to perfume bottles, you can add this gorgeous piece to your coffee table or night stand.

◆ The paper we’re using is handmade paper from recycled cotton remnants. It is eco-friendly and very durable. But a mix of tissue or scrapbooking paper from your local craft store or use left over scrap paper is okay too! (Up-cycling is always a good thing!) ◆ Any kind of tray or plate that you’re not using and want to add some bohemian glam to. ◆ (I used the gloss/luster kind but any kind to your preference is fine too) ◆ ◆ (To cut the paper) ◆ Or something to put your supplies on while making this crafty home decor.

Introducing Wellness : An Interview with Sarah Anne By: Charissa Lauren
A
muse to highlight, Sarah Anne Stewart has quickly become a representation of healthy living across the globe bringing her down-to-earth ‘wellness’ wisdom all the way from the Midwest. When her father cured cancer with alternative medicine, the experience sparked a light inside her that never was put out. Twelve years and hundreds of hours of training later, Sarah is now based in NYC, where she founded Introducing Wellness LLC and co-founded Bliss Out Retreats. As a Certified Holistic Health Practitioner (AADP), she coaches clients to let go of their inhibitions and dig deep—really deep. Equal parts fun and get-downto-business, her coaching is focused on developing a unique mindset that embodies developing a lifestyle that is focused entirely on “wellness.” Sarah is best known for creating an exhilarating atmosphere where she guides her clients on their own inspirational journey towards self-empowerment. Her contagious smile and graceful demeanor are central to her one-on-one coaching, events, workshops, speeches and retreats. Her unparalleled zest for life and free spirit are further exemplified through her love for worldly travels, culinary adventures and inspirational writing. PRETTY LIVING: Tell us about your job working in holistic health and wellness? SARAH ANNE: As a certified holistic health practitioner, my approach to healing is focused on looking at the body and all aspects of our lives as an interconnected whole. My job, simply put, is to inspire others to become self-motivated healers. I work with many people in many different settings. For example, I offer one, three, and six-month one-on-one services (in person or long distance) where the programs are structured around the individual’s needs, including healthyhealing, weight-loss, nutritional counseling, and mind-body work. I also offer one-day intensives, teleclasses, group programs, and periodic online courses. My business partner and I do intimate workshops, events, and yoga retreats as well. PL: What is your favorite aspect about what you do? SA: My favorite aspect of my job is that moment when the switch is flipped for my clients and they realize that they too can heal themselves and rekindle their trust in their own ability to know what is best for them. It is so incredibly inspiring to provide others with a support system where they can achieve health, happiness and a lifestyle that brings them joy. Hearing the words, “You have changed my life,” makes my job and the hours of work so very worth it. PL: How do you hope to help others? SA: My ultimate goal when helping FALL/WINTER 2014clients is focusing on
56
developing a mindset that supports an all-encompassing lifestyle that is in complete balance – mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. My main focus for my company is to help people understand that mind and body are not separate. There is a reason why 90% of diets fail in America; it is because most of us don’t work on our most important muscle – our mind. Before I even give my clients a nutrition plan, they learn the basic principles of mediation and controlling their thoughts and emotions. PL: Tell us about Introducing Wellness and Bliss Out Retreats. Any exciting projects coming up in the near future? SA: My company, Introducing Wellness LLC, was inspired around this idea that wellness cannot be packaged in a bottle. There is no here-today-gone-tomorrow “magic-potion” for poor health. Sickness stalks our nation because we frantically seek out these “quick-fix” solutions when our health falters. Introducing Wellness is about this idea that “wellness” is a lifestyle – it’s a choice you make every single second if you want to be happy and healthy. Bliss Out Retreats (http://blissoutretreats.com) was founded by myself and my best friend — certified yoga instructor, Fern Langham (http://yogawithfern.com). The moment we met it was love at first sight. We knew we wanted to inspire others through workshops, events and retreats. We’ve partnered with several companies in NYC and are expanding our retreat company this year. We have a lot of new projects in the works: we are launching our new version of “bachelorette parties,” where we offer yoga retreats instead of the Vegas experience; we are working on a new underground supper club experience; and we are developing an online course series specific to individuals with digestion issues. Our retreats are expanding internationally, specifically to Costa Rica and Bali, next year. PL: Do you have any personal natural remedies that you recommend for leading a healthy lifestyle? SA: Although I do focus on bio-individuality — meaning that every person is different and therefore needs a different “wellness” routine — there are certain “staples” of health that I recommend to all my clients. These include drinking fresh pressed green juice, getting blended nourishment (green smoothies with superfoods), eating raw foods as often as possible, introducing living foods into your diet, taking wheatgrass shots, jumping on a rebounder (small trampoline), getting in some exercise daily and using essential oils for their healing properties. I also recommend having a daily meditation or yoga practice and surrounding yourself with extremely positive people.

New York Fashion Week SS15 by: Brittany Comer
I SLOWLY STEPPED OFF THE BUS, in the humid heat of an early September afternoon, along with a flurry of people with backpacks and large rolling suitcases. I shielded my eyes from the overwhelming sun and pushed my way through to the intersection; I hoped to escape the onslaught of tourists. Although I had been to New York City many times before, this visit was different. The city greeted me with its sights and smells, the sounds of traffic and horns, the muffled voices of thousands of men and women. The exhaustion from 8 hours of travel dissipated as the city breathed new life into me. I was here for Mercedes-Benz Fashion week. I arrived at the hotel with Alex Duffy and we rushed to set up our collection of shoes and clothes, make-up and jewelry. Our first show, Meskita, was later in the evening and time was limited. We hailed a cab and fought through the city traffic, arriving at W 63rd and Broadway. Within a minute or two we were standing at the steps of New York’s Lincoln Center. The exact moment I laid eyes upon the entrance to Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week can only be described as the feeling a young child gets running down the stairs on Christmas morning. I’d seen this entrance a thousand times before, in magazines, all over television and in fashion articles. But this time, I was an attendee.

Anyone who has had the opportunity to attend a show at fashion week can understand the origin of the term, “fashionably late”. Every show we attended during the weekend was at least a half an hour late starting, if not more. However, this added to the excitement and energy in the tents. I had a great seat in the middle of the runway, 6 rows back for the Meskita show. Their fashions were stunning. The most prominent color used was gold, but soft pink and sage were also used numerous times, along with white. The sleek hairstyles added a sexy and powerful accent to the playful, flowing skirts and sheer tops. My favorite look by far was the all-white jumpsuit with a plunging neckline and thick, gold/metallic belt to pull in the waist. I have vowed to replicate this come warmer weather.
Our second show, Mark and Estel, was the polar opposite of Meskita. Loud, bass-driven music and colorful lighting added to the modern feel of the show. Their designs seemed more attainable, something that women could achieve and replicate for a night on the town, or shopping with friends. They favored hats, boots, and sheer scarves tied in loose bows. Mark and Estel ended their show with a crazy performance of their own music, filled with techno influences and electric guitar riffs. Talk about an ending! The following days were filled with client meetings, other shows, and of course, girls’ night out on the town (we were a foot away from Paris Hilton in a nightclub, by the way).

If I could give a piece of advice to someone attending Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, I would tell him or her to keep a stash of RedBull with them at all times. Always have their iPhone charger. And over pack—the overwhelming surge of power and fashion mixed with the excitement and vibes of New York City will possess you; you will change clothes at least three times a day, I guarantee it. But who’s complaining; it’s New York Fashion Week.
