It is fascinating to know that Christmas Eve in Japan is not a holiday. However, Christmas in Japan is celebrated with great zest and enthusiasm in Japan. The streets are lit up and Christmas decorations adorn homes, shops, public buildings and everything looks extremely festive. People are in a holiday mood and celebration is in the air. However, we know that the Japanese have special kind of food for every festival, but when it comes to Christmas, the Japanese don’t have much to offer.
Japanese Specialty in Christmas The most special food item the Japanese eat during Christmas is the Christmas cake. In fact, the Japanese invented the concept of the Christmas cake which was first just a simple plum cake which was then made in to a short cake. Later, after some improvisation, the short cake was decorated with fondant and marzipan. Of late, the Christmas cake is a vanilla sponge cake that is decorated and assembled with freshly whipped cream and fruits like strawberries.
Other than this, people usually feast on regular Japanese delicacies and there are many food festivals that are the highlight of the festival and the people of Japan are seen feasting at restaurants instead of eating at home. Some restaurants serve special sushi platters and ramen during the festival which is extremely popular with the crowd. There is no Christmas special Japanese food available other than the very Japanese Christmas cake.
Christmas in Japan is more about ambience and feel than food. Decorations cover almost every nook and corner of the streets of Japan and Christmas carols can be heard very often. But if one was to pin point any one special ‘Japanese’ food item that was special during Christmas, it would have to be the Japanese Christmas Cake, which is indeed a Japanese delicacy. 1 st Image Credit: goo.gl/kvN1iX 2 nd Image Credit: goo.gl/892Ix4 3 rd Image Credit: goo.gl/wZvhy6 4 th Image Credit: goo.gl/ArUobY
