When the ancient order of the Hand – an organization of Ninjas, Thieves and Assassins – sought Daredevil out to become their new leader, he plotted to use the organization as a force for good. When his archenemy Bullseye destroyed a city block – and killed 107 people in the process – Murdock was pushed over the edge. He killed Bullseye, and on the site of the decimated city block, built his fortress, Shadowland. Soon, Daredevil’s rule turned to tyranny, and the people of Hell’s Kitchen were taken by an unstoppable force of rage and violence. At the center of it was Matt Murdock, once the man without fear, now possessed by the demon known only as The Beast. Daredevil, in a fit of rage and insanity, defeated a handful of street heroes, both friends and rivals, including Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Spider-Man, Ghost Rider and the Punisher. Before Murdock lost himself forever by killing his best friend and law partner, Foggy Nelson, he was stopped by Iron Fist’s Chi. Daredevil was then forced to confront his past and drive out the demon inside his subconscious, an act which put an end to the rampaging violence out on the streets. Though the danger has passed, Hell’s kitchen has found itself without a protector…and with a big mess to clean up.
