First Impressions Can Be Deceiving

First Impressions Can Be Deceiving Written by Scott D. Jones Thursday, 12 November 2009 21:35

Last week, DiverWire came to agreement with scuba diving writer/photographer Polina Reznikov. She's the latest contributing writer to join the DiverWire.com team. Watch for more of her work in coming weeks. In the meantime, here’s a short story that will introduce you to this up and coming dive industry superstar. (Photo:Larry Cohen) Polina Reznikov has only been scuba diving for three years. But what an exiting three years it has been. In that time, the New York resident has logged more than 480 dives, secured a wide range of specialty certifications and explored places that would take some veteran divers significantly more time to accomplish. Polina continues to surprise and impress her scuba diving associates, who are often distracted by her long brunette hair and striking European features. “Some of the people I dive with don’t expect me to have the skills and certifications that allow me to do the types of dives I do.” she explains. “I find it interesting to see their opinions change once they see how I handle myself and my equipment.” An IT professional who emigrated to the US from the Ukraine in 1979, Polina was recently elected President of the well-known Sea Gypsies Dive Club in New York. She has been diving icebergs in Newfoundland, cave diving in Florida and Mexico, and artifact hunting in raging black waters of Cooper River. Polina has also participated in photographic expeditions in Indonesia and claims she’s just “getting started.” “I’m very passionate about scuba diving. I can’t do things half-way, it’s either all-the-way or I won’t do it,” she explains. “Scuba diving can be as exciting and relaxing as you want it to be, but that’s the beauty of it – there are so many options.” Polina recently authored an article on her iceberg diving adventure and is currently working on a number of photographic and writing assignments. She remains very active whenever she’s in the water. “If it’s not a photo that I took, I’m usually the one in front of the camera.” For more on Polina’s work, visit her website at www.PolinaReznikov.com
