AGffiTAGffi description sounds familiar. ft certainly does to me. Yes, their sound of the suburbs rather resembles fhe Members (though r'm not sure if they' d like that,) . That doesn' t mean they' re a copyn rip*of f or even their friends, but if you've heard The Member s LP, then t,hat I s as near bls you can get to comparing the way they use punk and reggae to theirown ends, in a rnore ser ious note hg"r*ver . Although I haven't seen the group since they ch;enged- guibarists, it seems they will be better off r^rithout the sort of solos John proviCecl . That's not an insult to John he 's a most amica, ble oLd chap. The cnly fault that lies in their way now before they can get properly going is the fact thtt they love their Kingston crowdso much, they never seen to play anywhere else . Holreve r, I have be en inf orrned- that they're in the middle of turnrng professional, signing a management deal r,nd. getting an agency. There 's also talk of a single in the New Year, so hopefully they may ( just rfta,y ) cgme your way soon Ack-Ack are quite willing to take things slowly and let themselves get tighter and tighter, but at least they've goe the music to back it up with, and in Public Concern have the sound of a 3-r.it, single.

O.K. presenting this month's unknowns, ladies and gents please . qiVe a Wag.m WeLCOme tO....ACk-ACk. Ska edge to it (to rne) o but the actual sound is a great mixture of punk and regEae. As Yeb' theY don't actually mix the 2 elements of t,en enough ( i. e. a punk song, then a reggae song), but certainly it, does aCd a great feel to it. The be st number is undoubtedly Public Concern, an infectious reggae piece with a chanting chorus and "a great dance-beat. The reggae feel also comes over ' strong Iy orrr wait f or it, Shakin

fron that Door & The window Ep, here,s another song dealirrg with production, this one being in a deliberate nonotol{ th"t is very uneasy f-istening. Deep Cuts seern deter:nined to try and find a Scottish Banshees - this lot try hard, with that interspersing guitar' but the funny pun about the irhole 3f tralt<s is-the iiroduction is-d.::aedfuL - really mins it. Even funnier is the fact tfrat no producer is credited; Strange eh? A worthy release, but sti11 waiting for the Deep Cutsi kiLler. on

About Seynour (Uottr Rough Trade)

First off is the l{aps' new single Real Shocks a a rough and read.y piece, and. pretty gocd short and to the poi-nt. No nore than very good though. The b-side features two of their ancient bedroom t::acks, English Verse belng ror-rghly in the nould of Steven Does, and Monologues is an out'of tui're, c/w piece" Sometimes all this gets beyond" a joke" And where do Ror.igh Trade go for their pressing? Next up is a. reissue of their debut single Read About Seymour, 1.27 of chaos, and I li-ke it. The b-side is i) Ripped And Torn a great piece of Status Quo type guitar with sone good vocals (and they 're not Nikki ) , and i-i ) Bhck Velvet, rnore ror:gh stuff and not as god . I sti1l f ind Swel-l l4aps ::ather overited, but neverbheless o at times they can be just what the doct or ord.ered STEPPING

TALK: EP (Eustone):

Peel gave thls'a slagging for being hlppyish, which 1s bollocks just '6os it's got a female singr, it's st1l1 great. Alice In Su:rderland. is the ma,in trac'k, and the highlight, i-t's got a good tune as well as interesting instruments. Health And Safety 1s next up and agaln excellent can't hear the lyrics, but an3rway. . . by Comon Problens it f s obvious that they've been li-stenj-ng to Scritti Politti, and again you've got the saxophone, tinny guitar, reggae-bass, and rnale spr:ken voice underneath female singing voice. The ]ast tm.ck, Johrn's Turtles n does border on the psychedelic, and would be b e tter off completely off. ts

Alright, so it 's only a year since the last one, but a lot's happened to The Jani si-nce then - they've trisen from the dead t (as the weeklj-es r^rould. ha,ve yoLl know ) , had. four hit singles, a silver album, tcured-

round the world., been hel-d. respcnsible f or a mod revival, and alongside The Clash ) have established themselves as the most popular of the vangr, ranl of new-wave groups still going. Obviously, attitudes have changed, and. there are new things tc ask. Also, there 's rarely , if ever', been an ,

inte:rriew with the three together, something we've tsort of ' remed.ied.Ad.d to ttlat the fact that we 've d el iberately kept The Jam out of' Janming as ,nuch as we could. jrn nos 6 r7 & B ( it was your vctes that won them the pol1 in issue 7), and that only a quar"b€T r at the ' most , of the pe ople reading this read, the last one, we felt it was time to go back and Ciscuss the changes. Also, to try and get an exclusi-ve on the al.bun, but that's something it's never easy for fanzines to get, by the time they've gcne to print. The lnts:rriew was done during a latesunmer of nad-ness in Virgin's plushr new

Town House stud ios (used. by' both The Rtits &, XTC for their new reeord.s ). Certain things about the reeording lre '11 never f orget, eg FauI & Rick's addictlon to Sp,ce Invad.ers (ea,n I be the first tc say I reckon it's

ripped off the last episode of 3lakes 7?), Fmce and. Paul's addiction to pool , Rick's aaaiction to Ivlayfair (sorry about that Rick: ), football matches a,gainst the NME, endless cups of eoffee, constant one-liners f:ien Rick & Brucer o€ither ever wi]ling to let the other have the last line, and. lots

more nemories besid.es . At The inte:rriew is, in fact , 2 interviews ,I d.one over a gap of 4 days : * the f irst was t with all 3, Bruce being in a terrible rtocd, and. the intenriew getting nowhere fast, be fore we got some decent answers, and then the jokes started coming, end.ing up nith I Bnrce being in a great mood" all ,day; the ZnP was a (slightly) more serious affair, with just Rick & Paul , Biving a good balance . $ver wondered what goes cca behind a commercial tladio station? D.ve Jennings blows it it ts not as pleasant as you td like . . .

open, and

AND THE RADIO IS IN THE HAND$ oH.,

I joined Pennine Radio, the commercial radio station covering the Br.adford and Leeds area, for the rnonth of June this year, hopirrg to gp.in practical experience to supplement the course ilm taking in ned ia and conmunications. The experienees r had. there explained quite a lot about the deficienei-es of both the Briti.sh m.dio and the ,rock b-usiness.in general ....' I starbed my senrice in the newsroom, & it was immediately obrvtous that the people there we;'e the yomgest on the staff , the DJs being nainly mid.d"1e-aged . The place was littereC with teleprinter news-bulletlns from the I3A in Lond.on n and. the occasional record.; I noticed a disco L2" r' as well as Anita Ward's new albun. I said what a pity it was that so many fine soul artists felt the need, to go d.isco r and got a response I night have expected had I expressed ad.miration for the Yorkshire Rlpper. Disco, I was tersely' informed , was a very happy nusic (tfris justif ied everybhing ) , and I 'd better get used to it because it would be the donirrant trend. for the nexb few years. Viv l{ackeson, one of the nefis staf f , kindly suggested that I vlsit a club in Leeds which I was told would get me out of ny 'Bob Dylan Synd.romet. This, I believe, was a reference to Iny suggestion tha't music was usually better wheh the lyrics had. some meaniilB, either socio-pblitiialr or emotional. . The tme depth of the Pennine presenters interest in contemporary musio was revealed by thpir remarks on the ai,r. One Top 10 single was introd.uced as 'police' by 'Roxanne t; the b-side of the Buzzcock's llarmony In My Head. was played on the ckuir:l; .;how without the DI apparentl-y realising his nistake; and the Banshees i 'Playground Twist'

wered., "but we-rre not really in' your age group". The station's.interested output, he told il€, was aimed at 25-45 f€&r-olds, because they were the ones who slnnt nostnoney, and were therefore the ones the ad.vertisers were interested in. End of

argument.

I

the dissappointed conment nThat's nothing like a twist" 'and the jocks' reniniscences on d.ancing in the sixties. The nistakes were frequent and ranged fron ihe offensive to the arnusir€ t the ,inadverbently played. Bttzzcocks' track was entitlerL 'Something Goes Wrong Again'. l,Iidr.+ay thror.6h my stay I politery suggested tJ trre progxairne ' controller. :eh€ Jeff H L'lston . that his Imowledge

the compilers play pil,'s 'Death Disco' for all of 20 seconds before deeid ing it was totally unfit for airplay. The Ruts 'BabI: lon ts Burnlng' was brought in as a new release, and the 6ame man told me ttuit it was "...terrible. ft sound"s rrgly.r'f net some of the presenters, and was hardly suprised to find tha! none of them even remotely lived up to thdir on-the-air inages. Brian McSharry is the morning h ousewive 's DJ; on 'the air he's alnost lndistiirguishable from Terry wogan; off the air his favourite words are shorb and Anglo-saxon. JuLius K. scragg is probably Pennine's star presenter- his broadcasting manner is the epitome of happy nindl-essness, all .,1:o11ity f or the kid.d.ies. when he's being himself , he's an oddly rleurotic cha::acter with a d lsturbrngly psychotic stare. When I suggested. he didn't take music. serlously enough, he snapped. angrily "r take music very seriously - probably more seriously than you. There 's a lot of money involved in it". Pennine had one 2tor:r roek

sonething. He agreed, but said, "They're not . DJs, they're presenters", and. went on to €xplain that a knowledge of local events and affairs was at least as impor-tant as a knowledge in what he persisted in calling 'pop music'. Fair enough; I changed. my tact and asked, why Dew-w&v€, despite it's ever-increasing fopularity, was largely ignored outsidP $he chart gulrdowlts. show a week, concentrating on heavy rnetal and basic punk - more subt le music was 'difficult to programlne ' . Scragg felt that two hours was too much; he. inf ormed. me that rock was dying - "Rock talks to itself'. You may be wondering what all this hes . to do with you; after all, Pennine Radio only covers a rel-atively snal1 area. But even if you tre lucky enorrgh never to have heard Penni-ne, the chances are that there's a commercial stati-on near you with the sane philosophy; another br-rnch of business people sellirl€; music, any music that isn't at ail disturbing or thor:ght-provoki-ng. 0r as viv Itlackeson said - "A pleasant beat in the background." . In Ameiica, all md io is coilrrercial, and a quick glance at their charts will give you an icLea of the long-tenn effects of that. The safe , clean nuzak supplied W Pennine, Capital, and the rest is, as they would say "happy music". To be more precise, it ts happy, consumer muslc; nusic to keep buying and stop think. ihg by, which isn't unexpected when you reali-se that , in the end , it 's the aivertisers who d.ecid.e what gets broad.cast. And. they have all the hits to play, to keep you in yorrr place ' all day.
