rtrs time to wake up and enrerge from the cocoon. lihen the new-wave first took shape it drew stl'ength, in the sear"ch fo'a solid identity, frorn thereve'ything that went before was shitr attitude. it bolste'ed the force of the rnusic and bnought the seventies to life, Rockrnr::o-rr ainrt just started and the new-wave is the rockrnr"oll of today, rtrs not the onry influenee, with bands like clash and the slits rooking to reggae for much of thein inspiration,. but the pistols, the Ramones and many more af.e power-packed seventies rockrnrroll bands. As a D.J. I attempt to turn new-wave qigs into rookrnrroll experiences. The Heartbreakers are always a g::eat band to work witho because Eddie cochran is as fundamental to their outLook as are the pistols. For the sake of us all, let's hope that their proposed gig wlih Snakinr Stevens proves to be a success, 0f course for mdny people into the new bands, presley, Carl per.kins, the Beatles, stones, seeds, }fho ..... were making their nost vitar sounds before musical awaleness set in. But whatts that matter. rgsy, l4c5 and the New york DolLs have all found favour with people not there the fi'st tine around, rtrs ar1 down to an app'eciation of what they were saying and how they lrere saying it, in their our times. Music is a penfect rnedium for: shoving two fingers up at the establishment, once it beeomes respectable it foses all its potency. Thatrs what cccur:red dr:ring the seventies. A11 the aqgression had faded and rock sta.rs seemed nore interested in becoming tax exiles or partying it up with royalty than looking afte" their fans who, after all had put thera on the top, What they needed was a firm boot up the arse. And thatrs what they got. No more farting about, just 'aw, honest r:ockinr, brought back on the intinate leve1 of the band and thei' audience. Back to the roots, expressed in a conternporary nannen' Yes the music of today has a sound of itsr own, but the unde::lying spirit is ttre same. Frustration and boredorn. unlike recent trends though this time its spewed

mistake, this ainrt the first new-wave, and if itrs the fast, then whatrs the point carrying on. But things have to move on. If they stand still they become extinct. Take Presley, known to rirost of us in his frash Las vegas or all-Ame::ican boy er"as. But in the fifties he was an outrager who offended the public monality and was looked upon as a coffupting infruence, rtts ironic that straight society and itst media that today slags off Johnny Rotten and nourns the death of E1ivs, once considered Presley a social outcast, Sholt merno::ies theylve gotl It is sonetimes this bigotry towards the sounds of the fifties and sixties that br:ings about st"ange 'neactions at new-wave gigs to the incrusion of such material. You donrt have to have been there to enjoy it. we.rre all children of rockrnr:ro11. rtts so exciting being involved with rnusic right there and now. but rockrnrroll hasnrt started in the seventies, neither, I hope. has it ended" Make no

August 29 at the Vortex turned out to be an unexpected ki11er, a magic night. What was so good about it? The Rich Kids, mate, that,s

what" See Monday

Al1 night we'd been hearing that Glen Matlgck's new band the Rich fiAs were gonna be playing after Chelsea. And they were gonna have an extra guitar on in the form of Mick Jones of The Clash.Wahool, I'd been Iook'ing foruard to seeing that lot for a long time.A.lthough they-formed some months ago they havenrt been able to do too many gigs cos they need another guitarist, another Mick Jones ,going on the set they did on Monday. He fjtted like a glove n and looked incredibly happy about it too, bouncing around the stage with a big grin flashing across his face at regular intervals. The band were obvjously rea1ly happy to be on a stage again and poured tfre lol

nightrs getting to be a highght of the week. I t's somethi ng to do wi th the Vortex h'eing on but that ajn't the sole reason.."Monday is com'ing like a Vortex on wheels. But it's somewhere to go where ya get four bands for a quid but hard luck if you wanna drink and f,ind you've only gotfglty pence left" But if you've flogged some albums in the afternoon then you'll-6e 0K till two.
