Why hair chalk is making waves around the world Whether you saw it on a celebrity, in a blog or on TV, the bright, lively colours women are sporting worldwide have caused a lot of excitement. From cotton candy pinks and deep sea greens to princely purples and sunny sky blues, hair chalk is a great way to make a statement – then wash it off at the end of the day!

Source: Pinterest

Using hair chalk is fairly straight forward. The most important thing is to ensure you maintain the health of your hair before and after using it. Other than the hair chalk, all you need are these 5 products - a water spray bottle, protective gloves, a towel, a flat iron and hair chalk.

Highlights • colour edition

Once you have the basics, be creative! Try adding two colours to one strand, making a rainbow with different coloured strands or styling your hair with a fish braid or bun to show off the colours.

When chalking, wear old clothes or a towel around your shoulders. Unless you’re blonde, start by wetting the hair lightly where you wish to colour it. Choose a colour and apply the chalk in a downward motion, twisting the hair as you chalk. Let the chalk dry and then seal the colour with a flat iron or a curling wand if you want colourful waves.

how to hair chalk

Hair chalk is fairly selfexplanatory. It is a chalk made for colouring the hair. They are very similar to non-oil based pastels and are easy to put on and wash off again. We have a great range of hair chalk products available at Price Attack, just ask one of our hair care experts to try a sample on your hair.

Time for a change? No sweat, chalk washes away with your regular shampoo and conditioner.

It might seem a bit confusing at first, but armed with our guide and the advice of the Price Attack Hair Experts, you’ll be achieving professional results in no time.

semi - permanen t Use semi-permanent colour to subtly deepen and add shine to your natural hair colour or to add a layer of colour that lasts for six to eight shampoos. The colour is applied to the outside of the hair shaft so it won’t lighten your natural colour. Manic Panic Amplified $29.95 ea

p e rma ne nt Permanent colour is mixed with an activator (developer) which lifts the cuticle while depositing new colour under the cuticle and inside the cortex of the hair shaft. This is essential for a more dramatic change, to go lighter or to cover grey hair. Permanent colour won’t wash out, but instead needs to grow out. Keep in mind that colour will start to fade after anywhere from 3-8 weeks if not looked after properly.

numbers Most professional hair colour use numbers to indicate the level or base of each shade. 1/ is always black, whilst 10/, 11/ or 12/ are used for the lightest blondes. Our Hair Experts are always on hand to help you choose the right colour for you. SPS Tints $12.95 ea

get salon colour at home

Step 1:

Step 2:

To ensure you achieve your desired result, ask our hair experts for advice before considering home hairdressing. You will need 1 x home hairdressing kit. ^You will also need a mixing bowl and tint brush, measuring cup, disposable gloves as well as tint and peroxide. We recommend our SPS range of tints & peroxide.

We recommend a patch test on a sensitive area prior to colouring. Apply a small amount on your skin behind your ear or on the inside of the elbow for 20mins and then wash off. Allow 24 hours to see if a reaction occurs. If the tested area does not react, you’re good to go!

^Available at Price Attack, but not included in the home hairdressing kit featured.

Step 3:

Step 4:

Make sure your hair is dry and detangled. Apply conditioner around your hairline and ears to stop the colour from staining your skin.

Pop on a pair of disposable gloves and then combine the colour and the peroxide in a plastic mixing bowl, following the manufacturer’s directions. Mix thoroughly.

Place a towel around your shoulders and put on the hairdressing cape.

Step 5:

Step 6:

Step 7:

Using your brush, apply the colour. Start from the roots at the front and work back. Work with small sections, using sectioning clips to hold in place.

Once the colour has been applied, set the timer and use a clip to keep your hair up through the colour development time. Once developed, rinse thoroughly until the water runs clear, then shampoo twice and follow with a conditioner.

Use a colour care treatment instead of conditioner after you colour to keep your hair and colour in optimal condition. Ask our friendly hair experts for the best products to suit your needs.

w h y d o e s colour fade ?

The main culprits are environmental factors which include UV rays, washing, heat styling and damaged hair. Keep your colour looking vibrant for longer with these five steps.

how to fight the fade

Step 1:

Step 2:

WASH WITH CARE

SHAMPOO & CONDITIONER FOR COLOURED HAIR

Try not to wash your hair within 48 hours of having it coloured and avoid hot showers.

Step 3:

Step 4:

Step 5:

TREATMENTS

THERMAL PROTECTION

HAIR SUNSCREEN

Damaged hair becomes more porous, allowing colour pigment to escape from the cuticle. Weekly treatments help keep your hair healthy and maintain it’s colour.

Heat fades your colour and damages your hair. Applying a thermal protector guards hair from the heat of hot styling tools such as straightening irons or blowdryers.

Use products that contain UV filters to protect hair from the fading effects of the sun.

Highlights • colour edition

These are gentler and won’t strip the pigment but instead add some to revive hair colour.
