Celebrating George Boole

WORK AND LIFE OF LOCAL MATHEMATICIAN BOOLE RECOGNISED BY HESLAM TRUST...

A six-foot-tall statue of Lincoln-bornmathematician, George Boole, has recently been unveiled in Lincoln. George Boole is widely recognised as the forefather of the information age, with his work being honoured in 1844 when he was awarded the Royal Society’s Royal Medal for Mathematics. Plans to commemorate him were first proposed back in 2017 by The Heslam Trust and backed by City of Lincoln Council. It has now been made possible by the work of Heslam Trust, which has also funded the statue, along with the city council, Network Rail

LINCOLN and East Midlands Railway. Boole is the inventor of ‘Boolean Logic’ which a US electronics engineer named Claude Shannon applied to electrical circuits, and latterly to microchips. Today even the most advanced computers and smart devices still depend on Boolean logic. The latter is a form of algebra which is centered around three simple words known as Boolean Operators: ‘Or,’ ‘And,’ and ‘Not.’ At the heart of Boolean Logic is the idea that all values are either true or false – a binary which computers rely on and convert to a zero, or one in digital code. n

NORTH LINCOLNSHIRE’S MILLY EVERATT FINISHED RUNNER UP IN THE MISS ENGLAND FINAL...

xxx

NORTH LINCOLNSHIRE Milly Everatt finished runner-up in the prestigious Miss England Final recently. The 22-year old from Eastoft, North Lincolnshire competed in various rounds of the contest, including sports, hair, bare-faced beauty, charity and talent rounds where she demonstrated her passion for painting animals. Milly was over the moon to make the final five competitors, and cheering her on was her mother, father, three sisters and partner Jamie Piggott, son of the late jockey Lester Piggott. Milly is part of a farming family, where on a normal day she can be found driving tractors and HGVs. n Newly secured Government funding totalling £20 million could be a ‘game changer’ for congestion concerns at Lincoln’s Western Growth Corridor development. The city council says a successful bid for a new railway bridge connecting Skellingthorpe Road to Tritton Road could greatly improve the city’s growth.

New Ho-Ho-Home for Red Arrows

A STREAK OF RED FLYING IN THE SKY! JOLLY SAINT NICK? NO! IT’S THE RED ARROWS!

With a roar of its engine, a red streak flew across the sky on a very special journey... but this wasn’t Jolly Saint Nick in his sleigh, delivering gifts to children, but rather a 1980s Hawk T1 jet departing Runway Four with the registration XX323. It’s the last Red Arrows jet ever to depart RAF Scampton at the squadron moves to its new home of RAF Waddington. Wing Commander David Montenegro, Officer Commanding of the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, said: “The Red Arrows have been only one chapter in RAF Scampton’s very long history. However, our beloved Station has been a huge chapter in our history after moving from RAF Kemble in 1983. “With a small interlude at RAF Cranwell in the mid-1990s, Scampton has been our home for 35 years. As the last RAF squadron to operate from Scampton, taking off from the runway for the final time was a poignant moment.” “We offer sincere thanks to the community and station staff who have been incredibly supportive and welcoming to generations of team personnel and their families.”

WADDINGTON Wing Commander Montenegro was heard to exclaim, as the jet flew out of sight “Merry Christmas to all, and to all... a good night!” n See www.raf.mod.uk.
