Meanwhile, Anna and Ben Haines will be hosting their own miniGlastonbury, which has become an annual event for the couple, their two boys and assorted family and friends. “It’s become a bit of a tradition,” says Anna. “Ben grew up in Switzerland, I’ve lived in Northamptonshire, Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire, we met in London and our school or university friends have all dispersed across the country.” “It’s so rare to find ourselves together in the same place without making a very deliberate effort. So we arrange a real party weekend once a year, normally around Glastonbury when all are welcome.” “We have big screens to show the festival, marquees, a barbecue, and friends camp in the garden. It really is a dream location for this type of event - a really large, versatile space where everyone can relax and there’s greenery and nature all around.”
The Grade II listed barns were part of a larger farming estate belonging to the Cust Brownlows dating back to the 1800s and were privately owned until the 1990s when a lack of successor to farm the land led to the estate being split up and sold off. The first owners moved in back in 1997 and completed a full conversion of the former cattle sheds and crew yards into a residential property. The first owners lived in the barns until 2013, when Anna and Ben purchased the property, with Anna five months pregnant at the time with the first of their two sons. “It’s been an amazing family home, somewhere the boys have been able to grow up not just in safety but surrounded by nature too. The arrival of spring is marked by the appearance of a family of Wagtails who visit us every year, and we’re very attached to the blue tits, owls and blackbirds who also call this place home.” “We were lucky that the house was in good order when we moved in with modern wiring, plumbing and a roof that were all sound, so all we had to do was put our individuality into the property.” The couple installed a bespoke kitchen finished in heritage colours from the Paint & Paper Library, notably Plum Brandy and Rouge II.
