Anniversary th th th th Stonewall of the

Riots

This year marks the 50th Anniversary of the Stonewall Riots and the birth of the LGBTQ2+ movement around the world. We have an exciting program for 2019 and are incredibly excited to take you through our interpretation of this pivitol event in LGBTQ2+ history. Marsha P Johnson was an African American trans woman and a revolutionary who instigated the Stonewall Riots in 1969. She was an incredible woman known for her eclectic style, and her bold fearless leadership. She changed the world, and made it a little easier for everyone in this community to take up space. In the 50 years since the Stonewall Riots her life has come to symbolize the journey for so many trans people of colour. Her life was inspiring and her death was symbolic of the battles the trans community faces today. In 1992 she was murdered, her body found floating in the Hudson River. A life of poverty, homelessness, police brutality, and mental illness. Through it all she lived her most authentic self and was a proud trans woman. She found such joy in the drag performer community of New York. She made her own costumes, and shewas considered a ‘Drag Mother’ helping homeless LGBTQ2+ young

people. Her selflessness has become the defining feature of the trans community. Even though the world makes it almost impossible to live out this identity, the heroism of this community is demonstrated everyday they step out into the world; Marsha P. Johnson reminds us that this is what defines this community, it’s deep empathy for everyone. In celebration of Marsha P. Johnson’s life Pride Month is dedicated to Drag Performers all over the world. You will see them throughout our festival this year. From across the world Drag Performers will be descending on our Pride. You will see them around the footprint and they will adorn our stages performing for us. Pride 2019 is an extra special thank you to all them for the work they do in sharing our culture with the world. Thank you to volunteers, board members and the LGBTQ2+ community for supporting Pride Toronto. We are extremely excited to bring you Pride Month 2019. Looking forward to seeing you this year!

LOONIE HONOURING LGBTQ2 CANADIANS IS NOW IN CIRCULATION! The new $1 coin commemorates 50 years of progress in recognizing the rights of LGBTQ2 Canadians By Christopher Turner

Fifty years ago, Parliament passed an act that helped initiate the decriminalization of homosexuality in Canada. Last month, the Royal Canadian Mint released a new loonie that celebrates LGBTQ2 Canadians and their allies who have advocated for equal rights. The Equality $1 commemorative circulation coin is one of a series of Government of Canada initiatives marking the 50th anniversary of a small, but important step towards decriminalizing homosexuality in Canada. Most consensual same-sex sexual activity between adults over the age of 21 was decriminalized in 1969, two years after Pierre Trudeau, then the justice minister, introduced amendments to the Criminal Code, famously declaring “there’s no place for the state in

the bedrooms of the nation.” Trudeau’s famous words on December 21, 1967, were an integral step in the decades-long efforts to achieve acceptance and equal rights for LGBTQ2 people in Canada. Canada’s new coin design was approved by the government of his son, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, on December 14, 2018. The approval follows new legislation that came into force last June, as part of Justin Trudeau’s 2017 apology to LGBTQ Canadians for past acts of discrimination by the authorities.

at the Royal Canadian Mint. “Celebrating 50 years of progress in recognizing the rights of LGBTQ2 Canadians is a powerful expression of Canada’s support of equality and inclusion.” You can find Canada’s new loonie celebrating LGBTQ2 Canadians in your change now!

“The Mint takes great pride in celebrating Canada’s culture, history and values,” says Alex Reeves, senior manager of public affairs

Rainbow Railroad In too many countries, who we are and who we love is illegal. Around the world, LGBTQI people are routinely denied basic human rights. Members of our global community are being attacked, tortured or even murdered because of their sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression. They often have nowhere to turn because their government, media and police not only tolerate but often enforce this brutality. Since 2006, Rainbow Railroad has helped over 600 LGBTQI people get to safety as they seek safe haven from state-enabled harassment and violence. This Toronto based international organization has become a world-wide success story, the only organization of its kind that has been able to intervene in crisis situations that put lives at risk. Over Pride, help us build a Rainbow Railroad so we can help persecuted LGBTQI people find a pathway to safety, dignity and freedom.

Pomegranate A Sapphic Opera

Suli & Cassia fall in love in the Villa of Mysteries in ancient Pompeii, in 79 AD. When Vesuvius erupts they are held in time until we meet the couple again - 1984, a downtown Toronto lesbian bar. They face the challenge of coming out to a conservative refugee family and the lovers are once more separated. The story circles back to Pompeii, now in ruins, but the power of memory endures and evokes a final duet as they measure out the years of their love in pomegranate seeds.

Human Human RightsSeries Series Rights In 2018, Pride Toronto hosted 4 panels that discussed prominent issues and concerns within the Queer community. The Human Rights Panels are a crucial part of Pride’s annual programming allowing participants the opportunity to engage in meaningful dialogue. In the past, Pride has discussed topics such as The Bathhouse Raids, Trans Rights In The New Generation, Beyond Queer Politics, and Blackness and Queer Politics. In 2019, we will be inviting students across Ontario to come together to discuss mobilizing around LGBTQ2+ issues online. In partnership with Trace Labs and Rainbow Railroad, we will be organizing a panel discussion to raise awareness around Trans issues and how to use social media to bring the much needed attention to these concerns.

The Book of My Shames

Canadian tenor, writer, and composer Isaiah Bell on his debut solo show: “I’m a good, happy, modern gay, thanks very much: sufficiently erudite, reasonably camp, ambitious, polite. But there’s this other me that’s at odds with all that; this tender part that has been left behind in the dark. Shame maintains the gap between us. So I’m reaching out. The Book of My Shames, filled with sad songs and satirical jingles, awkward confessional comedy, teenaged cris-de-coeur, and the world’s worst miniature play, is my Rosetta Stone between two halves of a broken heart.”

Women’s College Hospital Foundation Revolutionizing healthcare for a healthier, more equitable world Working with community members, patients, staff, physicians and volunteers, Women’s College Hospital Foundation raises funds to support the groundbreaking work of Women’s College Hospital. For more than 100 years, Women’s College Hospital has been developing revolutionary advances in healthcare to break down barriers and pursue equity for all. In response to a lack of safe and timely access to transition-related care, Women’s College Hospital has launched the Transition-Related Surgical Program (TRS) - the first of its kind based at a public hospital in Canada. Under the umbrella of the Trans Health Expansion Partnership (THEx), an initiative led by Women’s College Hospital in collaboration with Sherbourne Health Centre, including Rainbow Health Ontario, and the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, TRS creates access to timely, skilled and sensitive care by a collaborative team of specialists and health professionals. Funds raised through various events throughout Pride month will support the life-changing work of the Transition-Related Surgery Program at Women’s College Hospital.

For generations, Allan Gardens has been a safe space for Toronto’s First Nations community to gather, with many of our community organizations and resources nearby our community has enjoyed this beautiful park as a social gathering place. Yalla Barra This year Yalla Barra is hosted by the biggest LGBTQ2+ Middle Eastern Party in Toronto. They’re ready to kick things up a notch with an evening of high energy Middle Eastern house music from resident DJ Louay, performances by local Middle Eastern Queens Halal Bae and Kero Patra, and a gorgeous belly dancing show. Middle Eastern Nights prides itself for being inclusive of everyone and ensuring a safe space for all LGBTQ+ people and hope that just for one magical moment, people can feel like they’ve landed in the Middle East for a party under the stars. Ottawa’s very own Queer Mafia crew opens the stage with a queer female-focused dance party, then it’s over to DJ Jamal to keep things heated.
