Dennis NOBLE (1940-2014) Canadian

Dennis Noble, “280 Lovers”, acrylic on panel, signed and titled lower right, gallery label verso, 31” x 33.5”. After graduating from the Ontario College of Art in 1966, Denis Noble, alongside his close friend Hans Aarden, became one of the first Canadian artists to paint large scale murals on buildings in Toronto’s colourful Kensington Market district. He then launched a successful career as a commercial illustrator, winning him awards in Canada, the United States and Japan. Between 1966 and 1987, Noble’s paintings appeared in numerous galleries in Ontario including shows at the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Hazelton Lane Gallery, Market Gallery and The Paguarian Gallery in Toronto. His work, such as the Lovers Series, drew inspiration from the Cubists, Mexican Muralists & the Surrealism Movement. Denis Noble was one of Canada’s great working artists and a forefather of Canadian pop art style illustration of the 1970’s and 1980’s.

Brass Lidded Cooler & Glasses

A Secession period brass lidded cooler with twelve matching glasses & holders, the cooler showing period repoussé decoration supported by hand-wrought iron legs, the lid with knopped finial. The tin lined interior fitted with its original glass receiver. The glass cup holders show strong corresponding period decoration, each with their original glasses intact. Unmarked, likely Austrian, circa 1900. Cooler measuring 12.5” high x 13.5” diameter. Cups measuring 3.5” high x 2.75” diameter.

Antique Jumper Carousel Horse

A very good antique jumper carousel horse, American, circa 1910, possibly Charles I.D. Looff, hand-carved in cypress with a hollow body & separately carved head - turned slightly outwards with the mane carved in the opposing direction, the rump & tail carved in the solid, all 4 legs constructed in segments. The surface decorated overall with remnants of old ‘milk paint’, raised on an associated iron post through the belly plate within the pole hole, and mounted to an associated wood platform. Measuring 41” high x 43” long x 10” wide. The use of cypress is comparatively far less common than those carousel horses constructed in pine, poplar or basswood.

A fine parianware grouping known as ‘Paul & Virginia’, England, circa 1846, showing a young woodcutter handing a nest full of chicks to a young peasant woman, both seated on a naturalistic base inscribed COPELAND on the reverse. Condition noted, minor loss to one finger on right hand of Virginia. Measuring 12” high x 11.5” wide x 5” deep. This was one of the earliest pieces of parianware made.

A Daum Glass ceiling fixture, France, circa 193039, the thickly molded & partially frosted glass shade showing two large fish swimming amongst seaweed, signed ‘Lorrain’ in the mold, designed by Pierre D’Avesn for Daum at their factory in Croismare, Nancy. The shade measuring 10.75” high x 10” circumference, (minor loss to flange), suspended from what appears to be its original silver plated hanging fixture. A parian portrait bust of Clytie, England mid 19th century, the semi-clad figure of Clytie was a Greek water nymph known to represent unrequited love, affixed to a socle base with stamped marks for THE ART UNION OF LONDON 1855 / O DELPECH (RED). Condition noted, showing minor repairs to the petal shaped border, and crack underneath that same area. Height 14.25”. Made by Copeland after a model by C. Delpech, given as prizes at The Art Union of London in 1855.

A Murano glass tusk sculpture, the naturalistically modelled glass tusk exhibiting ‘ivory like’ striations and having a matte surface overall, one end fitted with a silver cap bearing marks for Venezia & silver marks denoting (.800 fine), the front inscribed & signed in script ‘Murano 2000, Alberto Dona - Paolo Barbiero, No. 1’. The reference to ‘No.1’, along with the fact that no other examples of this design were discovered at the time of cataloguing strongly suggests that this was quite likely an experimental piece, thereby being it relatively quite rare. 14. 19. The Auctioneer acts solely as agent for the seller and makes no representation as to any attribute of, title to, or restriction affecting the articles in the sale. DISCLAIMER: Ivory, tortoise shell and other “animal” items, including Rosewood, are restricted from export out of Canada due to protection under CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species). Pridham’s will not provide shipping or CITES application service. The successful buyer has to pick-up the item in person. Shall the buyer decide to take the item across a border after picking it up, the buyer takes full responsibility for obtaining proper exporting and importing documents from both countries: EXPORT IS AT THE BUYER’S RISK. Pridham’s supports the protection of all wildlife. | AVERTISSEMENT: L’ivoire, la coquille de tortue et d’autres objets de source animale (et même le Bois de rose) ont un interdit d’exportation à l’extérieur du Canada en raison de la protection prévue par la CITES (Convention sur le commerce international des espèces de faune et de flore sauvages menacées d’extinction).
