Undercover’s ethos is all about sustainability and quality, with founder Miriam keen to create bed linen that’s loved for years to come

IN CONVERSATION WITH Miriam Tyrangiel

We talk to the creator of ethical bed linen label Undercover about the ethos behind her beautiful brand

How did it all begin? For quite a while, I struggled to buy bed linen, and began to feel uneasy supporting companies with an opaque supply chain. The options on oer were either low quality or uninspiring, which isn’t great when you consider we spend a third of our lives in bed. I wanted to create a brand with a story that spoke to me, designing products that are ethically made, using high quality, sustainable materials and have a contemporary look and feel, all at a fair price.

Describe your typical day Every day is dierent and that’s what I love about my job, it’s incredibly varied. I might spend my morning reviewing colour swatches for a new range and analysing results from an online marketing campaign. In the afternoon, I’ll be optimising some operational processes with our warehouse and catching up with admin. I try to incorporate a workout into most of my days, being active gives me lots of energy.

What does the rest of the year hold for you? I’m working on expanding our existing range to more sizes so we can sell our bedding in more countries (every country has dierent bed linen sizes!). I’m also looking at bringing out some new styles further down the line – watch this space!

Describe your style I love understated, modernist design, mixed with occasional bright pops of colour. Can a home be both stylish and practical? Of course. If it’s not practical, it won’t endure. If an item is too ‘stylised’, chances are you’ll grow tired of it soon so I try to make decisions based on longevity: will I still love this item in six months or in ve years?

Who are you stalking on Instagram? I love following @thedesignles – they always feature such interesting homes and designers. I’m also a fan of German design blogger @herz. und.blut and artist and illustrator @CatherineLavoie.com_

Where do you find your inspiration? Inspiration can come from anywhere. I try to expose myself to lots of dierent inuences – in interiors magazines, on Instagram, in fashion, graphic design and architecture – but sometimes it’s taking a step back from work and having a receptive, positive mindset that nurtures the best ideas.

What’s your proudest career moment? I have a lot to be grateful for. There have been so many exciting moments since I launched Undercover but the most rewarding thing is when I receive positive feedback and repeat orders from customers.
