EDITOR’S LETTER BRING ON THE HOLIDAYS!

PHOTOGRAPHY (TOP RIGHT) KRISTINA SOLJO (MIDDLE RIGHT) SIMON WHITBREAD (BOTTOM RIGHT) PEGGY JANSSEN

I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait for the summer holidays. Long days and balmy nights. Barbecues with family and friends. And endless hours to potter around my home and garden. The hydrangeas I planted back in autumn are already blooming! I’m looking forward to arranging them in vases to display inside. What are you looking forward to most at the end of this year? Perhaps it’s some time out, with nothing else to do other than pour yourself a drink and pore over this copy of Home Beautiful. We’ve edited more than 80 pages of stunning summer homes for you to be inspired by. From Sydney’s northern beaches to Eumundi, these homes illustrate all the different ways you can create a fresh and breezy interior, whether you live by the coast or in the country. Speaking of fresh and breezy, how wonderful is the poolside cabana on our cover? Located in Sydney, it looks as though it’s been plucked straight out of the Hamptons with its shingled facade and white-painted woodwork. To me, the real beauty of this design is the symmetry – it brings an immediate sense of calm. If you do one thing in your home this month, try this balanced decorating trick. You don’t need a pair of palm trees flanking a poolhouse! It could be as simple as positioning coordinating lamps on either side of a console or buffet, a duo of candlesticks on the dining table, or two matching cushions on the bed. There’s something about visual harmony that just makes us feel good. As for the more practical parts of this issue, if you’re looking to overhaul the storage (or lack thereof) in your home, our masterclass on joinery (page 130) is a must-read. From page 139 you’ll find our buyer’s guide to fridges – and the all-important wine cabinet. And on page 170, money expert Effie Zahos reveals her top five ways to hit refresh on your finances. Perfect timing for those New Year’s resolutions. Cheers to 2021!

AUSTRALIAN DESIGNER ROSS DIDIER PRODUCES DIVINE FURNITURE INSPIRED BY FOLKLORE AND WHIMSY, STRIKING THE PERFECT BALANCE BETWEEN GOOD LOOKS AND LOGIC How did you find your way to furniture design? Ross: “I studied both industrial design and fine art sculpture at RMIT, then I travelled to London to work in backstage theatre. I made all sorts of stage props like luggage, chandeliers, and furniture for plays and operas. When I returned to Melbourne with my wife Libby, we decided to set up a workshop to create original furniture designs.” Who are you influenced by? “My creative ideas are influenced by so many sensory experiences… the real challenge, I find, is capturing these experiences through form, colour and design to genuinely articulate the story.” Where do you find inspiration? “I always write ideas down in a small notepad I carry. The challenge is retaining the potency of the idea after the experience. We live near a river in a forest, so I walk my dog there every day and love being attuned to nature. I mostly walk without a phone, which I find is the most effective technique to focus, and escape the distractions of being continually wired-in.” How important is the balance of form and function in furniture design? “Furniture is the closest expression of sculpture within industrial design because it’s so related to the human body. Without functionality in furniture design, there’s only decoration. The balance of practicality and aesthetic quality is critical to enrich our lives and well-being.” What trends do you predict will emerge in 2021? “Good design is long lasting, so I’m always wary of short-lived trends, and recent world events have changed our daily lives indefinitely, so I see purchasing quality furniture as more important than ever. I also see a new appreciation of home life, where living and working spaces will become more integrated, so furniture will need to be adaptable and multifunctional.” What’s next for the Didier brand? “Puffalo modular lounging launched last year to great success, so I’m expanding this collection to incorporate compact seating, desks, side tables and privacy screens.” Of all your designs, do you have a favourite? “Puffalo modular lounging is currently my favourite because the quality, form and comfort is so perfectly resolved, and it looks so bohemian chic!”

SET THE SCENE “Inspired by the 1934 film The Thin Man, the geometric floor tiles used in the bar area references Nora’s black and white dress in the film,” says Yaron Kanor, director of Studio Y, the company that created the stand-out bar. “The hero of the space is the Verde Alpe marble bar.” Volker Haug ‘Flipside’ pendants are a chic addition.

DEVIL IN THE DETAILS “Set into the ceiling is a stained glass light feature in Art Deco design, lit from within with LED lights,” says Greg Sanderson, director of the Speakeasy Group, which owns the bar. Adadaz Leadlights worked to achieve this look, left.

LUXURIOUS SELECTIONS “Geometric motifs, elaborate brass fixtures and rich timber tones are softly lit by the ambient glow of Tiffany light fittings by Catherine Vital which we had imported from France,” says Yaron.

PHOTOGRAPHY BROOK JAMES

WELCOME TO THE CLUB Curves (seen left & above), marble, walnut timber and velvet feature heavily in the design, while the fan motif, an icon of the Art Deco era is also on repeat. “The curved banquette seating was inspired by club chairs from the 1930s,” says Studio Y’s Yaron of the feature, above. The look is luxe, welcoming and echoes a classic Hollywood feel. “We wanted to create a sense of escapism,” says the Speakeasy Group’s Greg.

reaming of new-found liberation and off-grid living, textile artist and illustrator Victoria McGrane packed her life and work into ‘Daisy,’ a charming 1990 Toyota Coaster minibus, and took to the open road in early 2020. Her partner Darren and their rescue dog, Gypsie, jumped on board for the ride. What Victoria found, however, was far from freedom, but a scourge of mosquitoes, a stuffy motorhome and a global pandemic lockdown that stranded the newly branded nomads in far north Queensland. “During lockdown they closed down all the caravan sites, which did not give any provisions for people like us who didn’t have a home to go to,” explains Victoria from her motorhome, currently based at Currimundi Lake on the Sunshine Coast. “It was really scary. Luckily, we came across some generous people, including the owners of the local bowling club, who said we could camp there and use the showers until we figured out what to do.” While the artist was grounded, her designs were being sold in more than 30 independent stockists across the country, including Australia’s largest fabric supplier, Spotlight. From her customised motorhome, which is fully furnished with Victoria’s native-inspired textile label The Scenic Route, Victoria captures the heart of the rich Australian landscape with her intricately hand-drawn designs. “I work mostly from photographs that I’ve taken on the road,” she says. “Sometimes I’ll forage and take [plant clippings] with me in the van. I keep notebooks

and sketches, which I’ll translate into repeat pattern compositions on my laptop.” An appreciation for the Australian landscape has long been an influence in Victoria’s life. Growing up on the bush-trail edge of Sydney’s northern beaches, her father would often take her on trails. However, it was her grandmother, Mary, who introduced her to the world of textiles. “My grandmother was a seamstress and she taught me how to sew and make doll’s clothes,” says Victoria. “I would also make my own storybooks in magazines, including ‘Caterzine’, which was a fashion mag for cats.” While studying fashion design at TAFE in Sydney, Victoria did a print-textile course, and this was where her love of fabric design truly solidified. After honing her design skills, she worked in the fashion industry as a commercial designer until her side project, The Scenic Route, was born. “Six months after I started my business, I set up a stall at The Finders Keepers market in Melbourne,” says Victoria. “We drove there with my art in the boot, and I thought I would have to take it all back. It sold out entirely. That’s when I knew I was ready.” Today, Victoria works full time on her label, collaborating with a slew of Australian brands, including her latest wallpaper range for Urban Road and partnering with not for profit, Rainforest Rescue to create a 2021 calendar. And although she has made no plans to return to life off the road – at least in the short-term future – Victoria knows that wherever she finds herself next, home is where the art is.

STORY COURTESY OF BUREAUX ARTWORK CHIBUIKE UZOMA

MEANT TO BE Having first

captured her heart back in 2013, the current owner of this characterful beach cottage was excited to see it was finally up for sale four years later. With her friend, and architect, Antonio Zaninovic in tow, she viewed the home to see if it measured up to her expectations. And it more than delivered. “We both fell in love with the cottage and the potential it had,” says the homeowner, who worked with Antonio to transform the interiors into a light-filled, relaxing haven. Case in point, the bright and airy living area – which is open plan to the dining area and kitchen – on the upper floor and opens out onto a balcony with panoramic views of the ocean. The sectional couch and ottoman (the ‘Montauk’ slipcover chaise sofa from Temple & Webster is a similar style) are slip-covered in Linara Thistledown washable linen from Romo. Cane furniture and a grass rug add texture to the space. >

I

t’s easy to see why you could be taken in by this charming bayside cottage. Tucked away at the end of Cape Town’s Camps Bay, in a petite coastal suburb, the home’s backyard leads down onto the beach and offers views straight out to the Atlantic Ocean – it is truly a dream location. But it was also the building itself that first caught the attention of this divine cottage’s owner, a philanthropist. Nestled among some spectacular waterfront homes, as well as a smattering of more modest – and arguably lovelier – beachside bungalows, the home had a humble, untouched charm. “We admired the simplicity of the building as well as its perfect orientation, so close to the sea,” says the architect Antonio, also a friend of the homeowner. “We both thought it was the most charming and unpretentious cottage in the area.” Of course, a seaside cottage of a certain age is always going to have a few issues – and in this case the layout was somewhat cramped and poorly maintained. Luckily Antonio knew exactly what needed to be done. “With Antonio’s great vision and creativity, he created the best home for me,” says the homeowner. The renovation was overseen by Antonio in terms of design, in association with fellow architect Tim Penfold – “I pretty much told Antonio to do what he wanted to do,” she says. “The process was almost entirely hassle-free”. The aim, now very successfully achieved, was to keep “the simple cottage essence, inside and out”, Antonio explains. Also important was blending the house more seamlessly into its surroundings than it originally had been, and creating a better flow in the small landscaped garden around it. As the homeowner says, “it was very important to keep the original envelope and keep it as authentic as possible”.

Antonio explains: “Having been somewhat neglected during so many years, the structure of the house was not completely sound, so we went through a lot of effort to try and keep as much as possible, replacing only what was necessary.” The aim, he adds, “was to make the house insulated and liveable again – a bit like an incomplete puzzle, trying to find or replicate broken parts.” The result is a home that combines beachside charm with laidback yet discreetly sophisticated interiors. The decor is all about coastal living, with plenty of natural materials and textures such as cane and rattan – as well as judicious touches of colour – making for a contemporary take on Saint-Tropez style. Inspired in part by Brigitte Bardot’s famous summer house in the Mediterranean holiday spot, the feel is both “relaxed and bohemian” as Antonio puts it. He says that the interior aesthetic also retains a strong sense of the homeowner’s “own unique style, which she carries so easily within herself”. The entire interior has been refreshed with a coat of Dulux Kitten White (for a similar colour available locally try Dulux Whisper White), which makes the home feel bright and spacious and acts as the perfect backdrop for the homeowner’s pieces of art, which often take on a tropical feel, featuring palm trees and foliage. The homeowner has also filled her holiday abode with an abundance of greenery in the form of large-leaf tropical plants in interesting pots. “I love nature, and decorating with plants is like bringing the outdoors in,” she says. An abundance of natural light also floods in to every room, thanks to the plantation shutters and sheer floaty curtains, which are right at home in this beachy abode.

DINING AREA Neatly situated between the living space and the kitchen, the dining area (above & opposite) combines a mix of timber and rattan,

including a large dining table picked up locally from a vintage furniture dealer. A reflection of one of the homeowner’s tropical palm prints, bought from local store Pezula Interiors, can be seen in one of the large mirrors, which also bounce around plenty of natural light. Another large palm print (opposite), also from Pezula Interiors, adds to the tropical feel, while adding a pop of colour in an otherwise neutral space. >

A chunky wooden server (left) with carved legs (try the ‘Sculpt’ hand carved sideboard buffet from Hammond & Grace for similar) adds to the rustic coastal feel and is the perfect spot for displaying some of the homeowners treasures, such as her photographic artwork by Chibuike Uzoma, leaning against the wall. Adding to the tropical feel is a large Strelitzia plant in an oversized green pot by Vorster & Braye (the ‘Iko’ large pot in Sage, from Relax House, is a similar match). Panelled walls also add to the relaxed coastal vibe. To replicate this look at home, try Easycraft’s ‘Easyline 150’ panels.

GUEST BEDROOM Bold hits of turquoise in the floor tiles, bedspread and cushions, mirror the statement surfboard on the wall in this bedroom (above left). “My son is a big surfer, and this is his room when he visits,” says the homeowner. “We had this surfboard painted by a local artist.” MAIN BEDROOM ENSUITE More of the striking patterned floor tiles feature in the main bedroom’s en suite bathroom; this time in a vivid terracotta shade. Plenty of greenery has been added to this space, transforming it into a personal sanctuary, with white wall tiles, from Italtile, creating a crisp, clean contrast. The homeowner has added texture and interest with a woven bathmat and basket planters. GUEST ROOM ENSUITE The ensuite for the guest bedroom (opposite) has been decorated sympathetically, giving it a timeless feel thanks to the floor tiles, wall lamps (from Delos, a local antique store) and a Burlington ‘Edwardian’ pedestal basin that make this space, much like the rest of the home, feel as though it has always been this way.

Moroccan tiles

The homeowner was keen to keep the cottage “authentic”, opting for a few heritage pieces and Moroccan floor tiles in varying patterns throughout. “I just love the colours of the tiles, they’re very unique and make the rooms feel warmer,” she says. For similar styles, available locally, try Jatana Interiors. Visit jatanainteriors.com.au. >

BALCONY Timber cladding was added to the exterior, as was a balcony and balustrade so the homeowner could

make the most of the beachside locale. “I’m always on the balcony, whether it’s in the morning to drink my coffee, or later for a glass of wine,” says the homeowner. “Sitting on the balcony gives us a feeling of being grateful for the beauty that surrounds us and watching the waves come and go is a real gift.” The backyard has been planted with different varieties of succulents, which have a sculptural quality, while being easy to maintain in a coastal location. HOME ON THE RANGE Homeowner Tess (opposite) worked with Sydney-based architect

John Simpson to realise her vision of an immaculately styled, gracious family residence brimming with warmth and personal touches. Designed in the American Craftsman style, the ‘great room’ of her Queensland home (this page) is the hub of family living and unites the kitchen, living and dining beneath a soaring cathedral ceiling. This space is key to the look Tess wanted to create. “A great room can actually be quite small, but it’s usually very high-ceilinged,” she says. “It’s a shared space; it’s always attached to the kitchen and that was the central thing I wanted about the home. I said to John, ‘I want a great room and the kitchen needs to be absolutely knockout amazing.’ ” >

F

amily means everything to mother of two Tess, and that is why she devoted two years of her life to building the home of their dreams. Nestled on a sprawling block just outside Toowoomba on Queensland’s Darling Downs, the design of Darlana House pays homage to both Tess’ heritage and the island home she left behind. Originally from Papua New Guinea, Tess moved to Australia when her daughter Penny, then three, faced health challenges that called for specialist medical care. But Tess didn’t want to live in a busy capital city. “I know Toowoomba and it’s a beautiful place to raise kids,” says Tess, who attended boarding school here. “The more I looked into it, the more I realised why my father chose it [for me] 23 years ago.” Her plan was always to build the new family home from scratch – she had done the same in Papua New Guinea – which allowed her to incorporate personal touches into the design. “This is meant to be a forever home, so everything had to tie into our family story and we wanted it to be as comfortable for us in our 70s as it is now,” explains Tess. “I had to be firm here and there to refuse certain elements that I knew wouldn’t work. There’s nothing wrong with expanses of glossy white floors, wrought iron and marble, but I like a relaxed, casual look.” Built in the American Craftsman style, the house is more than 700 square metres in size, with two main wings. The north wing includes the kitchen and the ‘great room’, while the south includes the laundry, kids’ bedrooms – Tess also has a son, Reuben, three – and the main bedroom. A central link contains the office and family room, plus there is a guest wing comprising a garage, mud room and guest suite. The home was designed by Sydney architect John Simpson. Now in his 70s and semi-retired, John was recommended by Tess’ builder, Jeff Bubeck of Downs Designer Homes. “John added some personal touches that were based on my ideas but had connections to his own childhood, which I thought was really sweet, especially for an architect who has worked for that long,” says Tess. As a tribute to her electrician father, the home is named after a light fitting that Tess adores, the ‘Darlana’ lantern by Visual Comfort. “The lantern’s beauty is in its perfect proportions, and correct proportion is the secret ingredient of Darlana House,” says Tess. “I couldn’t think of a name that carried enough meaning for me, but naming it after a light seemed, after a bit of thought, quite perfect.” Other architectural elements reflect her family history, which includes an English father and Tuvaluan mother. Both families had the name of Rose, so roses feature prominently in both the garden and decorative details. Tess sourced most of the furniture and design elements, scouring websites for the classic American aesthetic and having it delivered to Toowoomba. “Everything’s got a story,” she says. “Everything should have a connection – who you are, where you’ve been. Most of this details that connection to the family. I think that’s what makes a home inviting to anybody. They can walk in and sense that story.” And its the warmth of Darlana that people remember. “Every visitor has the same reaction,” says Tess. “At first they’re wowed by the high ceilings and big spaces, but then they start to say things like, ‘It just feels like home.’ That’s what I aimed for. I wanted people to walk in and be amazed, but also to feel completely welcome.”

recurs throughout, from the breakfast nook (below) to the pergola outside and timber fretwork in the hallways. This cohesive design belies the size of the home and draws disparate elements together. The same white paint (Dulux Terrace White) was used on all walls, along with Dulux Lexicon Quarter for the trims – with the exception of a soft pink in daughter Penny’s bedroom. Paired here with a splashback of ‘Crayon’ tiles in Ceruleo Gloss from National Tiles, the walls’ freshness is enhanced by Feiss’s ‘Annie’ chandelier from Generation Lighting. “When you look closely, it’s got a beautiful imperfect textured finish,” says Tess, who also loves the parquetry top of the square table, found locally (for similar, try connectfurniture.com.au). The upholstered banquette seating was also made locally, by Garden City Auto Trimming and Upholstery. >

Dark fabrics tend to fade or show watermarks and I keep these draped with throws and things.” Awash with hints of blue that echo the Pottery Barn ‘Oden’ rug, the coffee table, also from Pottery Barn, stores the kids’ board games. Tess has styled it with three round bone bowls from St Barts. The classic-look sofa is adorned by ‘Ink’ plain linen cushions by Tahn Interiors and a checked ‘Lama’ throw from L&M Home. DINING AREA Finding a statement chandelier for the great

room (right) was a mission. “It had to be the right proportion; it couldn’t be too big or too small,” says Tess. “But when you Google ‘chandeliers’, all these lights would come up that were just not me. They were either really industrial or really blingy.” She finally unearthed this “perfect” ‘The Elongated’ chandelier from Klaylife. “It has a lovely matt finish, and it has that story of being handmade behind it,” says Tess. The ‘Mabry’ dining chairs and ‘Banks’ dining table are all from Pottery Barn. >

the design of 10-year-old Penny’s room (left). “I may be over-compensating for my wish for a beautiful bedroom when I was growing up!” she admits. Painted in soft pink (Dulux Slightly Rose Quarter) and furnished by Pottery Barn Kids, the highlight is a collection of paper roses, also from Pottery Barn Kids, arranged randomly above the bedhead. “I originally thought I’d wallpaper her room but decided these would add texture and another element,” says Tess. “I love the 3D effect.” MAIN ENSUITE The bathroom vanity units throughout

the home were designed by John Simpson and Tess, and constructed by Weston Kitchens + Bathrooms. They are all extra-deep, for a luxurious feel and to avoid spots behind the semi-recessed basins for water to pool and mould to grow. Tess: “The kitchen. Its style is one of the things that captured me about Craftsman houses.” HOW DID YOU PICK THE WALL PAINT?

“My short list was about 50. As the natural light was so strong, I had to be careful what shade I used, as you can end up with really yellowy tones in the afternoons and way too blue in the early mornings. I chose Dulux Terrace White and it is just lovely.” WHAT WOULD YOU DO DIFFERENTLY?

HOLIDAY HAVEN EVERY DAY FEELS LIKE A VACATION FOR THE CLAN WHO CALLS THIS CHIC SPOT IN COASTAL NORTHERN NSW HOME Story & Styling KYLIE JACKES Photography LOUISE ROCHE

HOMES FAMILY FUN Enamoured with a quiet stretch of coastline, homeowners Britt and Damian were keen to call a town in northern NSW

home and snapped up a renovator they could turn into a retreat. Damian and his dad worked in tandem to overhaul every zone, improving functionality to suit the couple and their children Madison, seven, and Stone, two (pictured with Britt, opposite), who arrived after the project was completed. A big change was relocating the entrance and moving the fence line forward to make use of the entire block, which Damian landscaped. Emma Gale’s artwork Apple Seller in the kitchen and dining area (below) ties in with the home’s palette. “We’re fans of Emma’s work and this piece is fun,” says Britt. “It creates a positive vibe.” The dining chairs are from Life Interiors and the couple have had the dining table for years. “We found it in a little furniture store in Sydney,” says Britt. “It’s made of old recycled Sydney railroad tracks.” >

S

even years have passed since Britt and husband Damian bought their home on NSW’s far north coast, but they still have plenty of “pinch me” moments. “We’re always out at the beach, or riding and skateboarding on the coastal paths,” says Britt. “Our kids Madison and Stone have grown up with the same ‘street crew’ since they were babies. Honestly, we couldn’t have chosen a better upbringing for them.” For Britt, who grew up in California, it was love at first sight when she and Damian discovered the picturesque coastal pocket. It had the same “where-the-farm-meets-the-sea feel” she fondly associated with her own childhood in a small, close-knit town on the US West Coast. The pair decided it was an idyllic place to raise their family, so they initially rented in the area while they contemplated buying or building. One weekend, on a whim, they pulled up outside a home, open for inspection. “Damian took one look from the car and said, ‘No way’,” says Britt. A purple exterior embellished with corrugated steel offered little street appeal – however, the sizeable flat block and its proximity to the beach prompted them to take a closer look. With good bones, abundant natural light and scope for Damian to landscape and indulge his green thumb, within a week they had put in an offer. “We’d renovated before and Damian grew up on the tools alongside his dad Derek, who’s a builder, so I knew what we were capable of,” explains Britt of their plans for a thorough renovation. They lived in the home for several years to get a feel for the spaces and redesign the floor plan, and it soon turned into a real family affair. Britt’s brother Luke, an architect, and Luke’s wife Lisa, an interior designer, offered their advice, and Damian’s stepbrother Phil signed off on the build.

The couple’s vision was for a relaxed, modern home that opened up to the garden and encouraged the family’s enjoyment of long lunches on the deck and weekend barbecues. Also, by moving the fence line to the front boundary, there was room for a pool that is now admired the moment you walk through an entrance walled in glass. During the six-month renovation, Derek moved in and tackled most of the work with his son. “Damian was in his element working with his dad and Maddy loved chatting with all the tradies,” says Britt. The significant changes also included reconfiguring the entrance to produce a striking, sun-drenched hallway; relocating the kitchen and dining area; and extending the deck to create a seamless indoor-outdoor flow made for entertaining. A fourth bedroom with a gorgeous outdoor bath zone wrapped in timber was also added, giving visiting friends and family a sense of escapism whenever they stay. Working within a tight budget, the couple opted for timeless finishes throughout, with crisp white walls and blackbutt timber floors, and invested in sliding doors to infuse a light, airy feel. Furniture was also cleverly chosen and sees Jardan pieces mixed with op shop finds and Ikea bargains. “I didn’t want the house to lean strongly towards any one style,” remarks Britt. “I really just wanted to keep the palette calm so we can grow with it and add layers over time.” Now the transformation is complete, weekends are devoted entirely to family time and making the most of the area – picnicking, lazing at the beach and swimming. “On a Saturday night we’ll often light the fire pit out the back, invite friends over and watch an outdoor movie on our projector under the stars,” says Britt. “Having young kids, it’s all about enjoying the little things, which is really special.”

KITCHEN The couple lived with the original kitchen for several years, so they knew it needed

to be moved to a more prominent and accessible spot. The new location adjoining the dining area is spot-on as it takes advantage of garden views and connects to the deck. “It’s lovely getting all that natural light while you are cooking away, and still feel like you are being included with what’s going on outside,” says Britt (pictured with Damian and Madison, opposite). Polytec ‘Legato’ cabinetry in Crisp White is a subtle backdrop to an island bench topped in Quantum Quartz ‘Michelangelo’ with Caroma ‘Liano’ taps, while under-bench shelves in Laminex ‘Classic Oak’ are a niche for crockery and display. Stools from JD Lee Furniture round off a top breakfast spot. A custom buffet by Urban Kitchens And Joinery (below & opposite right) adds further storage and a ledge for vignettes using cookbooks and fresh ingredients. >

MADISON’S BEDROOM “We’d wanted to

paint a chalkboard wall in Madison’s room ever since she was a baby, and it was the first change we made to her space during the renovation,” says Britt. “It was handy with home-schooling during lockdown, to practise handwriting and maths, but mostly the kids love being able to draw on a wall without getting into trouble.” A vintage desk found on Gumtree is practical and adds character, as does a moon mirror from Hunter & Nomad. Bedding from Kawaiian Lion and H&M is fresh, simple and comfy – as Madison (pictured) can attest. >

GUEST ENSUITE Britt and Damian wanted to give visiting friends and family an “experience”, and this is the blissful result. “When we added

TAKING ITS DESIGN CUES FROM PALM SPRINGS, THIS FAMILY’S COASTAL HOME IN SYDNEY HAS BEEN GIVEN A GLORIOUS NEW LIFE Story JACKIE BRYGEL Styling LISA HILTON Photography SIMON WHITBREAD PAVING THE WAY Homeowners Danica and Mark took their time getting to know their home on Sydney’s beautiful northern beaches before

embarking on a renovation, living in the abode for nearly a decade with their three sons, Angus, Toby, and Ed before going ahead. Yet the couple knew exactly what style their transformed home would take. “I always had my heart set on a home with a nod to Palm Springs style,” explains Danica, enjoying the home’s many sunny spots (above & opposite, with Lulu). With its distinctively modernist facade, liberal use of crazy paving-style stone, beautiful breezeway blocks (opposite) and a treasure trove of restored mid-century pieces inside, the home pays loving homage to the iconic design era. >

DINING AREA Danica and Mark love hosting family and friends

T

hey met and fell in love at flying college almost 25 years ago, and have since transported travellers to all corners of the globe, but to commercial pilots Danica and Mark, the thrill of landing a plane in their hometown of Sydney is a joy that never wanes. For this is the city in which the parents of three have created a sunny sanctuary for their growing family – a stylish yet relaxed haven that provides an idyllic base from which to revel in the beachy outdoors. “It’s always been amazing to fly in past the Harbour Bridge and Opera House and know you’re home,” says Mark. Adds Danica: “And we feel especially fortunate to be here, now that we’re grounded by the pandemic.” With its crazy paving-style stone fence and dazzling white rendered facade, the abode Danica and Mark share with their three sons Angus, 14, Toby, 12, and Ed, 10, could be perfectly at home in California’s modernism mecca, Palm Springs. Yet, nestled in a quiet enclave in Sydney’s picturesque northern beaches region, this is a home that truly celebrates the laidback Australian coastal lifestyle. It’s little wonder the couple were instantly enamoured with the neighbourhood and the home’s close proximity to the beach – which is, “as the crow flies, about 200 metres”, says Mark – when they first inspected the property 13 years ago. Yet the house appeared vastly different to the light-filled delight it is today. “It was a rather dark and nondescript 1940s home,” says Mark. Danica, meanwhile, recalls being immediately won over. “Angus was six months old, and I was pregnant with Toby, so I was ready to take anything!” she exclaims. Three years ago, the couple decided to undertake a major renovation. “The main motivation was that the internal living area was small and dysfunctional,” says Mark. “The house also only had two bedrooms, with the boys bunking in together.” The couple decided to extend out the back and up, with the upper level featuring four bedrooms and two bathrooms, and the ground level making room for a new kitchen, dining and lounge area. “And I really wanted to go with a mid-century aesthetic,” says Danica. “Having visited Palm Springs in 2013, I fell head over heels with the modernist era. I love the structural and practical simplicity of mid-century homes – the large windows, interesting shapes and lovely indoor-outdoor feel.” To bring their vision to life, Danica and Mark turned to their longtime friend Anna Williams, who runs Your Beautiful Home in Sydney. “Danica and Mark wanted to work with the footprint of the old house as much as possible to keep costs reasonable – and were also conscious not to create a home that would be overbearing or dominant on the block,” says Anna, whose worked with the couple from initial planning all the way through to final decor finishes. “They were a joy to work with and we’re beyond thrilled with the end result.” As are Danica and Mark. With a base palette of crisp white, earthy timber and organic stone, this is now an inviting home awash with a palpable sense of space, texture and sunlight – just perfect for sharing with others. “We have always wanted the house to feel warm and welcoming, and to fill it with family and friends,” says Danica. “We do pinch ourselves that this is where we live.”

As for the room’s treasured artworks, the piece hanging above the antique cabinet is an 1816 East Indies shipping chart handed down through Danica’s family, and the painting is an original work by artist Toni Messiter. >

orning, afternoon or evening, bike riders expertly balance surfboards as they scoot past this family home located a stone’s throw from the waves on Sydney’s northern beaches. And on any given day in summer, you can bet that Lou and Kev’s house will be filled with the friends of their three teenagers, Archie, 19, Olive, 16, and Millie, 15. “It actually is a quiet house, with privacy from the busy street,” says Lou. “But when the kids have friends over, they turn up in packs of 10 and make it a fun, loud house. There’s sand and towels everywhere!” The family’s four-bedroom new build is the result of a project that serial renovators Lou and Kev had worked towards for years. “We’d always wanted to build from scratch, and Kev always wanted to live in the centre of a village or hub,” explains Lou. While living in a neighbouring suburb, they spotted the vacant corner block on the market and quickly snapped it up. The couple then consulted interior designer Emma Macindoe after admiring a local home she had designed. “I met Emma for coffee and it instantly felt like a natural, easy relationship,” says Lou, describing Emma as “an interior designer with an architectural builder’s mind”. With her and a team from Planbuilt builders onboard, Lou and Kev were set to go. The design inspiration was free-flowing between themselves and the designer. “An awful lot of Pinterest was involved!” says Lou with a laugh, adding that the references covered everything from rustic Spanish courtyards and traditional English kitchens to Hamptons-style refinement. “It all started out as Seventies beach-house style, and then Kev became a lot more interested in things that were a little more Hamptons-esque, like with wainscotting and the panelled doors,” says Lou. However, as a child of the Seventies, she stuck firm to her dream of a sun-drenched sunken living room. “The house I grew up in didn’t have one and I’ve been obsessed with them ever since,” she says. Lou’s no-limits approach to decorating can be traced back to her English upbringing with a painter/decorator father. “As a child, I was constantly in the wallpaper shop,” she says, explaining that it was the English way to change your wallpaper ahead of hosting guests. “If it was your turn to have Christmas, you would get new wallpaper and redo the walls,” she says. Lou, along with Kev, who was also born in the UK, maintains homes shouldn’t be static. “In a serious home, it would look weird if something was moved out of place, and I never wanted that,” she says. “I always wanted a relaxed home.” With its playful palette, natural textures and fresh ocean air flowing through the open spaces, this home has fulfilled its brief. “There’s a beach-house feel,” says designer Emma, “but the character and essence of Lou and Kev is evident in the materials, finishes and colours.”

Neutral wall colours can add depth to a room and be a point of interest when a finished texture is applied. “The buffed patina of the plaster on these walls is beautifully tactile and a lovely soft finish that sets off the parquetry floors,” says interior designer Emma. N

obody could accuse Brisbane couple Jo and Steve of being held back by indecision. Within moments of wandering through their sublime Sunshine Coast weekender for the first time, the pair were ready to sign on the dotted line. “We loved it from the minute we walked in, even though it wasn’t what we were originally looking for,” says Jo. “But it just felt like us, and we ended up buying it in the car on the way home. We’re very spontaneous people – and we never look back.” That was 25 years ago and Jo and Steve, now grandparents, certainly haven’t regretted their impulse purchase for a moment. Time after time, the couple have felt a sense of joy when opening the front door to their undeniably special home by the sea. For Jo and Steve, sons Andrew and John, and now their families, laidback holidays punctuated by salty breezes and sunny, sandy days far from the hustle and bustle have always been the happiest of times. “The house was a bit tired when we bought it, but it certainly served its purpose until we decided to renovate a couple of years ago,” says Jo. “The children were young, so there was always sand through the house. I used to throw a towel over the front balcony to signal to the boys on the beach that it was time for lunch!” Just metres from the sand, and presenting a breathtaking outlook when the sky is as blue as the ocean, the elevated three-level home also presents beguiling vistas on the darkest and most tempestuous days. “I love watching a big storm roll in over the ocean,” says Jo. “I grew up in far-western Queensland, where we hardly ever saw rain, so storms have excited me my entire life.” In 2018, Jo and Steve decided the time had come to embark on a renovation. Enlisting the expertise of interior designer Paul Popham of Popham Interiors and Laguna Building Consultants principal Toby Witt, the couple were confident they were in good hands. Their trust was well rewarded. “It ended up being a major renovation,” says Jo. “Paul and Toby very much worked together and really only approached us if there was a crisis, because they knew what our vision was. I didn’t want a theme – I just wanted it to feel like a very comfortable beach house.” And that it surely does. Bathed in natural light, the home – with its beautiful new living spaces and multiple decks overlooking the sea – provides an easy connection to nature, with ample space for family and friends of all ages. “It’s a very non-precious home,” says Jo, “and you have to have that at the beach. You just have to sweep the sand up and get on with it.” While the home’s base palette is mostly neutral, featuring organic textures, there’s plenty to intrigue the eye, too. Consummate travellers, Jo and Steve have assembled a fascinating collection of pieces from around the globe, many of which have been reinvented and are now showcased about the home, each telling a story. “Much of the furniture Paul recycled or re-covered,” says Jo. “He did a wonderful job with the floor plan and with all of the interiors. I trusted him implicitly and let him have the reins.” Above all, this is a heavenly yet delightfully unpretentious home – one Jo and Steve hope will continue to be cherished by future generations to come. “This home is part of our family and always will be,” says Jo. “It’s very special to us all.”

heartfelt style

Imbuing the abode with a very special yet utterly approachable sense of style, a treasure trove of resalvaged furnishings – many collected by Jo and Steve over the decades – are now enjoying a new lease of life. “I have fallen in love with many of these pieces all over again now that we are displaying them in this home,” says Jo. For original treasures, try your luck at gumtree.com.au.

DINING ROOM An evocative painting (artist unknown), purchased by Jo and Steve

two decades ago at an art school in Bali’s Ubud district provides a talking point in the dining domain. Made from antique French oak, the 10-seater dining table, with bespoke matching chairs, makes light work of entertaining. Additional character is added to the room with the eye-catching timber cabinet – an antique painted Javanese trunk the couple bought in Bali 23 years ago and freighted home. On top sits an impressive pineapple lamp that Jo found at One World Noosa. >

LIVING ROOM In common with the entire home, the central chill-out zone – adjacent to the kitchen and dining room –

is, quite simply, a textural triumph. Comfy EJP ‘Bristol’ sofas – layered with an array of scattered cushions (some in Alcott ‘Denim Barley’ striped fabric by Sanderson Fabrics) – provide ample room for the entire family to curl up. “We wanted everyone to have their own space, but also spots such as this to come together,” says Jo. The coffee table was found at One World Noosa, while the stunning ‘Chambord’ chandelier was sourced through Beacon Lighting. “The challenge was to find a chandelier with minimal exposed metal because of the propensity to rust near the ocean,” says Jo. As for the model sailboat from The White House in Noosa, Jo reveals: “We’ve named it The Lady Annette after my sister-in-law, whose birthday we were celebrating with a week-long stay here at the time of purchase.”

KITCHEN Fresh and airy, and grounded by solid blackbutt flooring, the beautifully appointed hub

of the home is an easy entertaining paradise. Silver Sahara granite, sourced from Signature Stone, covers the benchtops, while the beautifully rustic chandelier suspended above the island is another favourite piece. “I found it wedged behind some timber pallets in a timber restoration shed when Steve was looking for timber for the mantle,” says Jo. “It’s been rewired and hand-waxed. I love it, as it reminds me of a chandelier you may have found in the dining area of an old timber sailing boat.” ‘Barcelona’ stools in Natural Oak from Provincial Home Living continue the coastal feel. >

UPSTAIRS HALLWAY In the upstairs walkway, painted timber Bain

& Sons shelves display more of the couple’s keepsakes. “Paul has placed a lot of artefacts that we collected overseas here, together with some shells and books,” says Jo. The benches at either end of the unit feature seat cushions upholstered in Warwick ‘Jarvis Sesame’. Above the stairs, a custom-ordered Beacon Lighting pendant adds another touch of old-world detailing, as does the eye-catching Javanese display cupboard.

CHILDREN’S BEDROOM “This is the bedroom our grandchildren use, and it has two king single beds,” says Jo of the nautical-style

room (above left), on the middle level of the home. Classic bedlinen by Pillow Talk and a ‘Noah’ bedside table and lamp from One World Noosa are relaxed and comfortable. POWDER ROOM A stunning carved Italian marble basin rests atop a Macaubas granite vanity counter (above right). The elegant, ornate mirror, sourced from Mirror Gallery, adds a sumptuous finishing touch. BEDROOM In this luxurious sleep zone, Sheridan bedlinen and a Pillow Talk comforter join with an array of plump and colourful patterned cushions for a decidedly inviting look. >

The sweet glass table is also from One World Collection. POOL LOUNGE A feature wall clad in showstopper botanical wallpaper – Mokum ‘La Palma’ by Catherine Martin – is the star attraction in the pool lounge and bar (opposite). A vintage cabinet from India, painted white by Steve, is the perfect spot to display treasures ranging from an antique Chinese green-lidded jar to a Balinese tribal shell necklace and a tall, bronze pine lamp, also from local store One World Noosa. >

ALFRESCO Capitalising on its heavenly location, the alfresco deck – conveniently located off the kitchen – is forever

in use by the family. “I most love what we call ‘The Nickie Bar’ after my daughter-in-law Nickie, as she came up with the idea for it. It’s the area where the two all-weather bar stools sit,” says Jo with a smile. “The bench is wide enough for a small cheese platter and wine glasses, and it’s a lovely spot for early morning coffee and early evening cocktails.”

ARTWORK RICHARD WEISENBERGER

WARM & WELCOMING Much has changed in the 29 years since Chris and Bob

built their home at Eumundi, 120 kilometres north of Brisbane, yet it has always stayed connected to nature, and remains a mirror of the personalities of the people who live there. During a recent renovation, many elements were reinvented, such as the sofa in the sunroom, re-covered in Warwick ‘Maharaja’ fabric, while the bar was transformed with a feature wall in Rockcote’s ‘Marrakesh’ render, glazed for a marble effect. Naturally hued pieces from CLO Studios including cane chairs, a rug and timber bar stools increase the warmth, while on the wall, the fabric hanging has taken pride of place for decades. “It was commissioned by the Maharishi of Udaipur in Rajasthan to celebrate the birth of his first daughter,” says Chris. “I found it in an Indian store.” Beside it, flanking the doorway are “shark jaws of a white pointer caught in Queensland around 20 years ago”. >

F

rom the road, there’s no hint of Chris and Bob’s home, which greets you at the end of their long, tree-flanked driveway. When they bought the sprawling, five-hectare block at Eumundi in the Sunshine Coast hinterland nearly three decades ago, there was a single fig tree on the property. Yet over time, the land has been transformed – and, more recently, so has the three-bedroom house they built together. When they moved here, all those years ago, one of the first things the couple did was plant thousands of trees for a koala and kangaroo corridor at the back of the property. They then established an orchard and paddocks to practise permaculture and grow their own fruit and vegetables. Turning to the house, they each sketched their vision of a dream home – and upon comparing notes, the designs were in sync. “We both wanted a two-level home, north-facing, where all the rooms were used and open to the outdoors, and that’s what we created,” says Chris of their sanctuary, where their daughter Jess grew up and loves to visit whenever she can. Building also presented an opportunity for Chris and Bob to experiment with their range of Rockcote coloured renders, developed by Bob. The result was a spectrum of vibrant walls. “I think there were 13 different colours downstairs alone – blue, yellow, purple, ochre, you name it. It was pretty out there,” recalls Chris of the home, which first featured in Home Beautiful in 1998. Fast forward to now and they were ready for a change. The initial plan for a few cosmetic upgrades evolved into a complete fit-out, with original builder Tony Poole taking on the renovations. The couple knew exactly how they wanted spaces altered and, as keen cooks, a priority was opening up the kitchen to create a galley set-up with a central island where they could entertain. Bathrooms were redesigned as luxurious escapes, with all the doors and windows replaced and the terracotta flooring swapped for ceramic tiles. The revamp also embraced the outdoors, with lush new entry gardens and a water course complete with boulders, a flowing creek and a waterfall. “Bob’s always had an affinity with rivers, having grown up on the banks of the Macquarie River in NSW,” says Chris. “So we decided to get rid of our pool and gave local company Water And Stone free rein to create an ecological pond. It’s just amazing. We swim in it every day and Bob’s even stocked it with fish.” Passionate about self-sufficiency, the couple installed solar panels which, coupled with water tanks and a grey-water system, allows the house to be completely off-grid. “We went all in and did everything we wanted and we’ve never loved the house more,” says Chris. “We are incredibly content to spend the next 30 years here if we’re lucky enough. But there won’t be another renovation. Once is enough!”

KITCHEN Originally a U-shape, the kitchen (below) was transformed into an open galley layout. The heart of the space is a generous

island bench. “We wanted it to look warm and have a lovely patina, so we chose a Rockcote ‘Marrakesh’ finish, which was hand trowelled by artisan Matt Ladley of All Areas Rendering,” says Chris. Items ticked off the wishlist include a Zip HydroTap, an Italian pendant light bought overseas and Franke appliances. “We never use more than two burners at a time so we got a small cooktop and it’s perfect,” says Chris. NOOK An inspired idea was to convert an unused area adjoining the kitchen into a sitting spot (opposite). DESIGN MASTERCLASS:

ROOM TO GROW CAREFULLY DESIGNED JOINERY ELEVATES THIS HOME INTO A CELEBRATION OF ORDER Words KATE BARBER Photography NATALIE SPADAVECCHIA

WHEN THE OWNERS of this heritage-listed Californian bungalow in Sydney’s inner west first moved in, they were a family of four. Since then, they have welcomed two more children. As the original home had limited storage, renovating was always on the cards, but after the arrival of baby number three, the dwindling space led them to act. Enter Sydney-based design firm Bone Made. “The existing part of the home had very little storage so a big part of the clients’ brief was to ensure there was ample storage for a growing family,” says Leah Pitman, interior designer at Bone Made, who had the homeowners’ children, now aged seven, five, two and 11 months in mind when developing storage solutions. Another part of the brief was to fuse together contemporary design with the classic elements of the original home. “It did pose its challenges sometimes because we didn’t want it to feel like two separate homes,” says Leah. “What we did was take elements from the classic, Californian bungalow style and really filter that through to the extension part of the home.” Joinery features heavily in the design and in order to maintain this seamless connection, the same joiner was used throughout. “We find that it makes the whole joinery package a lot more cost-effective,” adds Leah. “It also ensures the design is consistent.” And the owners couldn’t be happier with the results. “It’s an absolute joy to live in this home as it feels so easy,” says homeowner Alison. “Most days, everything has a space and a place. I could never have dreamed of creating what they did, while ensuring that it remained so functional at the same time.”

KEEP IT STREAMLINED The only handles on the kitchen joinery are the brass beauties from Lo & Co on the two pull-out pantries, creating a streamlined look. “Because there was so much joinery, we didn’t want to use handles because we thought it was going to be this sea of handles,” explains interior designer Leah. Concealed behind the two-pac joinery in Taubmans Ashen Mist, there’s an appliances nook with pocket doors so it can be left open, and a range hood. Rattan pendant lights from Lighting Collective complement the dining chairs from The Wood Room and dining table from Trit House. Oak bar stools with a matt frame, from Relax House, carry on the striking pops of black.

DESIGNER NOTE “Install a pull-out pantry if you’ve got the space,” says designer Leah, of the feature, at left. “It’s especially good for this family of six as they constantly have to be stocked up on food. Being able to pull out your pantry and have everything there and labelled makes it so easy to access food.” >

DESIGNER NOTE When selecting materials, consider who’ll be using them. “We designed the oak bench and seat pad, and the joiner brought our vision to life,” says Leah. “We used a leather-look vinyl for the seat pad which is both practical and wipeable, considering little kids would be using it.”

“KNOWING IT WAS FOR A FAMILY, WE WANTED TO INJECT A BIT OF C OLOUR INTO THE SPACE” ~ LEAH PITMAN, INTERIOR DESIGNER

A side entry through the carport gives access to the mud room (above & left), which shares a space with the laundry and a small WC. “There’s a bench seat where the kids can sit to put their shoes on,” says Leah. Hooks by Designstuff are perfect for school bags and the custom timber veneer shelving keeps the casual zone tidy. The dark, slip-resistant floor tiles from Earp Bros were chosen to hide muddy footprints and the green tiles from Tile Cloud provide contrast.

FOCUS ON DETAILS The new part of the home has classic features to reflect the heritage section. Behind the finger pulls on the kitchen drawers (left) are strips of brass with a patina added by the joiner to mimic an aged look. “We really felt that was a beautiful element to tie back in with the brass mixer,” says Leah, of the Brodware mixer that sits atop the Caesarstone benchtop in Bianco Drift, which has also been used for the splashback. The classic styling of oak herringbone flooring from Tongue n Groove is used throughout the home and also helps to unite the two sections.

COMBINE PRACTICAL ZONES

BALANCE SPACE AND STORAGE Cleverly continuing the look and materials of the kitchen, a custom credenza in the dining area (below) is perfect for storing glassware, dinnerware and other items for entertaining. On the far end, there’s also an integrated wine fridge. But is it possible to have too much storage? Yes, cautions Leah, who was conscious of not overwhelming the open-plan area. “We left that wall blank because I wanted to allow space for art,” she explains. “We wanted to make sure that we did allow some free walls for styling purposes.” >

UPDATE CLASSIC MATERIALS Elegant timber-veneer and rattan cabinetry (below & opposite) in the living area sits beneath a wall-mounted TV (not shown) and houses electronics, along with kids art and craft supplies for the adjoining rumpus room. The sleek handles from Lo & Co and integrated fireplace from Stoke Fireplace Studio introduce contemporary flair to classic rattan. “We had to have a hearth to protect the floor so we installed a limestone paver,” adds Leah. “It was only needed for the fireplace, but we continued that design detail to the end to keep it streamlined.” The table from Madras Link and chair from Huntley + Co cement the modern aesthetic that runs throughout.

BE OPEN TO SHELVING Above the entertainment unit, open shelving in American oak (opposite) supplies a spot to display special books and beloved pieces. “[The clients] wanted to make sure that it still felt lived in and that they could display family photos and a few styling elements,” says Leah. “There were really high ceilings too so there would have been a lot of bare white walls, and [the shelves] helped to fill in a bit of the blank space.” Here, a monochrome palette dominates, with a white vase from Urban Eden (top shelf), black and white vessels (bottom shelf) and a white footed pot (on unit, with flowers), both from Albi.

DESIGNER NOTES “The clients’ brief was to have a fireplace integrated within the entertainment unit, but they were very open-minded with the design,” says Leah. “We decided to expose the flue rather than conceal it, as that gave the space a more classic and cosy look. >

STEP UP SOPHISTICATION The centre of the his-and-her wardrobe in the main bedroom (above) hides a secret entry to the ensuite. “When it’s closed, it literally looks like it’s part of the wardrobe,” says Leah. The wardrobe (in Taubmans Ashen Mist two-pac) features the Lo & Co brass handles seen in the kitchen, and a dash of extra panache. “They wanted some classic, sophisticated detailing to be brought into this space so we opted for really beautiful profiling on the doors,” says Leah. Due to the home’s heritage status, the joinery stops short of touching the ornate ceiling. The brass light from Lighting Collective is another nod to tradition.

CUSTOMISE YOUR CUPBOARDS In the bedroom shared by the two eldest girls (right), wardrobes in Polytec Oyster Grey melamine, with handles by Made Measure, are built with little ones in mind. “Because it was designed for kids, less hanging space was required so we opted for more drawers,” says Leah, who also incorporated a versatile desk nook in American oak timber veneer (teamed with a chair by Globe West). “It has simple drawers so they can put homework folders in there but still display their toys and items on the open shelves,” says Leah. The ‘Coral’ wallpaper by Wallpaper Direct adds “a bit of flair to the room,” she says.

“THE ENSUITE IS A BREAK AWAY FROM THE KIDS AND THE CRAZY END OF THE HOME” ~ LEAH PITMAN, INTERIOR DESIGNER

SPLASH OUT ON A PAMPER ZONE Boasting a double shower and floating double vanity, the luxurious main ensuite is a much-needed, grown-ups-only area. “They each have their own basin, mirror and set of storage,” says Leah. A 40mm piece of Caesarstone in Turbine Grey sits atop deep Polytec Cinder melamine drawers with ample room to tuck away toiletries, ensuring surfaces stay clutter-free, for a more calming space. Slimline mirrors from Life Interiors and a light from Lighting Collective pick up the dark palette, while floor tiles from Academy Tiles enhance the soft-grey scheme. Sleek taps from ABI Interiors are a glamorous addition.

THE CALILE HOTEL, BRISBANE Showcasing a soothing palette of soft pinks, sandy beige and bright whites, this bathroom (above & below) is more reminiscent of a desert oasis than an urban setting. Inspired by the tropical styles typical of Miami, Palm Springs and Mexico City, architects at Richards & Spence complemented the palette with brass faucets, mirrors and towel railings. Timber furniture and cork panelling on the lower half of the walls provide a contrasting texture that softens hard surfaces. “And the large round bath looks superb from all angles,” says Ingrid Spence from Richards

EROSANTORINI, SANTORINI, GREECE Delivering maximum functionality in a small space, this graceful Grecian bathroom in an Aegean resort has us dreaming of the sea. Inspired by the spectacular coastline, designer Paola Navone employed a pared-back aesthetic and delightfully simple design, combining whitewashed walls with concrete floors, and incorporating chrome fixtures and fittings, and a shower inlaid with local stone. The result is a clean, calming and streamlined interior that celebrates sensual design features such as the curved dividing walls, pedestal basin and curvaceous mirrors. The raw timber framework around the large mirror above the bed adds a little rustic charm to this sunkissed hideaway. “The abundance of natural light and sea breezes make you feel as though you’re outdoors, even when you’re inside,” says Paola.

W

hether you’re upgrading your fridge or replacing a relic that’s finally expired, you’re in for a treat when you hit the shops. These days, this household essential boasts designer looks and a myriad of futuristic features. “If you haven’t bought a fridge for 10 years, the world has changed,” says Gary Brown, senior brand manager, home appliances at Harvey Norman. Here’s the lowdown on what’s new and how to choose the best appliance for your space and lifestyle. Plus, why wine fridges are the latest kitchen must-have.

SLEEK AND STREAMLINED More streamlined than ever, today’s fridges come in a range of modern finishes. According to Gary from Harvey Norman, most brands have launched a range of ‘dark’ or ‘black’ stainless steel. “It tends to match more cooking appliances,” he says. “You can buy the black in a matt finish now as well, so it doesn’t show fingerprints.” There has also been a move towards flat door options and sleek recessed handles. “Panel-ready integrated models give you the freedom to personalise the appearance of your fridge with a choice of external cabinetry and handles,” says Jeff Punzalan, refrigeration product manager at Fisher & Paykel, as can be seen on the Fisher & Paykel integrated French door refrigerator freezer RS90A1 (below). There has also been changes in the dimensions of models. “The typical French door fridge wasn’t made for Australian homes in mind when they were first brought out,” notes Brad Reed, senior marketing manager of LG Home Appliances. “That’s why LG developed the Slim French Door models.”

FRESH FEATURES The option to alter the temperature in a specific area of your fridge is an enticing feature of many models (for similar to the above, see the Samsung French door SRF678CDLS). The feature, called TriZone, Variable Temperature Zone or Flex Zone, allows you to adjust zones, including freezer, produce-keeper, meat and deli compartments. Crisper bins keep produce fresher for longer, too. “You can control the level of humidity between your fruit and veg compartments, as both need different ends of the scale in terms of humidity,” says Gary of Harvey Norman. “We want humidity in our fruit so they’re juicy but we don’t want humidity in vegetables because our celery, carrots and lettuce won’t be crunchy.”

TECH SAVVY The latest fridges are upping the ante in smart technology. With LG’s Instaview feature, for example, you can see inside the fridge without opening the door and letting cold air out. “The panel remains a dark hue – when knocked twice it is clear and the interior light turns on inside the fridge,” says Joshua of Winning Appliances. Meanwhile, Fisher & Paykel’s ActiveSmart Foodcare responds to daily use, making minor, intelligent adjustments to the airflow within the fridge so it can maintain constant cool temperatures, even when the door is open. It even knows when you’re on holiday and defrosts the freezer less often.

MADE TO MEASURE Before you head to the shops, measure the width, depth and height of the space. “Leave 25 millimetres of free space around the top, back and sides to allow the heat produced during refrigeration to escape,” says Joshua of Winning Appliances. “Also take into account which way your fridge door will open as surrounding cabinetry and walls can stop the doors opening.” Buy the biggest fridge that fits, advises Gary of Harvey Norman. Look at a French door model (above, for similar see Fisher & Paykel RF522ADX5) or a side-by-side model (bottom left, for similar see Liebherr SBSEF7242). >

WHICH FRIDGE IS FOR YOU? To choose the best configuration and capacity for your needs, consider your lifestyle. “Think about what you want out of your fridge,” says Joshua from Winnings. “Would you like large freezer space, smart features or high energy efficiency? Think about what you typically store in your fridge.” Beyond that, consider features. “Ice dispensers are becoming more accessible at mid-range price points, and you can get fridges with built-in deodorisers and retractable shelves, which help when you’re storing large items,” says Brad from LG Home Appliances. You might also want it to match your decor as this Smeg bottom-mount FA8003 does.

WONDERFUL WINE CABINETS Whether you collect wine or buy wine to enjoy at a moment’s notice, a wine cabinet is a smart investment. “If you’re only cellaring, all wines should be kept at the same temperature,” says Gary of Harvey Norman. “If you buy wine to consume, you would buy a wine cabinet that could keep it at serving temperature rather than cellaring temperature. Most cabinets you can buy in a single or a dual zone for temperature, so you can have two different temperatures in there.” All of them protect wine against temperature fluctuation, vibrations and UV light. “Some of them come with apps so you can manage your cellar,” adds Gary.

WORDS OF WISDOM THE COUNTRY WOMEN’S ASSOCIATION OF VICTORIA SHARES EVERGREEN TIPS FOR EVERYDAY LIVING

1

MAKE YOUR KITCHEN SPARKLE WHITE VINEGAR AND EUCALYPTUS OIL ARE GOOD GENERAL DISINFECTANTS. To clean rust from pots and pans, use a bit of tomato paste and lemon juice. GENTLY SCRUB WITH A SCOURER AND SEE THE DIFFERENCE THE ACID MAKES. THEY’LL LOOK AS GOOD AS NEW. TO CLEAN PAINTED CUPBOARD DOORS, USE 1 TABLESPOON BORAX DISSOLVED IN BOILING WATER TO MAKE SOAPY WATER.

2

BAKE LIKE A PRO + To prevent the top of a cake cracking, lightly brush it with water before baking. Bad cracking means your oven was too hot. + If a butter or fruit cake appears a little overcooked and dry when you take it out of the oven, place a thick, folded towel over the top of the cake as it cools. + A few drops of glycerine added to egg whites while you are beating will make them firm. + When making a sponge, heat the sugar in a covered dish in the preheating oven, while you are weighing out other ingredients, then tip it on the eggs. This halves the beating time and makes a lighter sponge. + Marshmallows make great candle holders on birthday cakes – they prevent wax running onto the cake.

3

WHIP UP ROYAL MELBOURNE SCONES 4 cups self-raising flour, sifted 1 good pinch of salt 300ml milk 300ml cream Mix all the ingredients together and gently knead. Cut with a scone cutter – don’t twist the cutter or you will get ‘Leaning Tower of Pisa’ scones. Place on a lined baking tray and bake in a hot oven for 12 minutes or until well risen and hollow sounding when tapped on the bottom.

INSPIRATION:

STATELY ESCAPE MOTIVATED BY THE TONES AND TEXTURES OF THE NAPA VALLEY IN CALIFORNIA, THIS ELEGANT OUTDOOR RETREAT IN SYDNEY’S NORTH DELIGHTS ALL YEAR ROUND Words ANNA McCLELLAND Photography NATALIE SPADAVECCHIA

I

t’s safe to say this sophisticated Napa Valley-inspired pavilion, with its soaring ceilings, luxurious finishes and astonishing attention to detail, isn’t your average cabana. Overlooking a tennis court on one side and a glittering pool on the other, it’s testament to the skilled eye of Darren Mills, co-founder of architectural design and construction firm Cadence & Co, who was tasked with creating a luxurious outdoor retreat on a rolling acreage just inland of Sydney’s northern beaches. Part of a large-scale project to transform the five-acre site – a former horse facility that had run into neglect – the pavilion mirrors the tones and textures of the new family home beyond, which is nestled in a stunning landscape that includes rejuvenated stables, a kitchen garden and chicken house. “We chose an earthy, natural palette to help the structures soften into the surrounding landscape,” Darren explains. “We wanted a mountain home similar to what you’d find in the Napa Valley, with natural materials and a real sense of scale.” A facade coated in Resene Oilskin Half, roughsawn hardwood pergola and Western red cedar shingles, left to age naturally, combine to create a look of rustic luxury, while inside, dramatic vaulted ceilings and vertical cladding give the effect of a cosy American lodge – particularly when the fire is roaring in winter. “It’s a versatile space that gets used by the family’s children and grandchildren, all year around,” Darren says. “When you’re working on acreage you have the luxury of space, which means you can include many different elements.” Shaded by a wisteria-covered arbour, a row of deckchairs runs parallel to the pool, complete with an outdoor fire pit for cooler nights and a hammock for lazing in the sunshine. The size of the property also demanded a rethink of standard building scale. “You can’t use suburban scale when you’re working on acreage, or everything will look undersize,” Darren explains. “Everything has to be generous in proportion.” Even the plantings, while minimal, serve as striking showpieces, such as the pair of massive Canary Island date palms flanking the pavilion, which also cast spectacular reflections in the pool. “It’s a very relaxing place to be,” Darren says. “It gives you the ability to get out of the sun and spend more time around the pool.” On a scorching summer’s day, where else would you rather be?

GRAND AMBITIONS “We wanted the pavilion to feel and function like a proper room,” explains Michael Kilkeary, Cadence & Co head of design, who devised the pavilion concept. Carrying the walls’ paint colour – Resene Drought Half – onto the ceiling in a quarter-strength accentuates the room’s grand sense of height, while providing a warmth beyond the reach of standard white. James Hardie ‘HardiePlank’ cladding and pine batons line the walls for a luxurious lodge look that’s surprisingly inexpensive. “It’s typically used as cheap external cladding, but in a different format can actually give a very luxe feel,” Darren reveals. >

“THE PAVILION GIVES YOU THE ABILITY TO MAKE A DRINK OUT OF THE SUN” ~ DARREN MILLS, CO-FOUNDER, CADENCE & CO

MATCH POINT Windows soak up views of the tennis court and glorious bushland beyond. Tactile Solis cane blinds provide protection from the western sun and echo the tones of the Alfresco Emporium jute rug. Custom-mixed Antique Stone floor tiles lay a sophisticated foundation that connects the pavilion visually to the pool.

OASIS AWAITS Occupying pride of place at the end of a sun-drenched pool, the exquisite pavilion (opposite) radiates wow factor. The pool’s brilliant shade of aqua-blue is thanks to a pure white pebblecrete that naturally throws the colour of the sky above. “The intention was to keep the pool and landscape simple, but with a feeling of luxury,” says Cadence & Co. co-founder Darren Mills. Antique Stone coping lends a weathered elegance in keeping with the natural materials.

UNEARTHED WE DIG UP THE BEST BACKYARD BUYS AND UNCOVER TOP GARDENING TIPS Edited by HARRIET SIM

5 MINUTES WITH: JUSTINE WILSON

OUTDOORS Stylist Justine Wilson of Vault Interiors.

THE FOUNDER OF VAULT INTERIORS SHARES WHAT’S HOT IN POTS AND THIS SEASON’S OUTDOOR STAPLES

What outdoor trends can we expect to see this summer? Justine: “Joinery that acts as an extension of the lounge or kitchen, sunken fire or sitting pits made from concrete or render, and pergola-style structures that allow for hanging lights or lanterns are perfect for a long summer night.” What colour palettes should we be coveting outdoors this season? “Warmer accent colours such as earth tones, beiges, mustards, reds and pinks are a strong trend. The trick is to pair them with crisp whites. White furniture, feature walls or planter pots are a great way to inject white, and contrast well against green.”

What are your top picks for summer blooms? “Hydrangeas are a summer favourite of mine; they are colourful, fast-growing and beautiful. Simple architectural greenery such as agave, aloe vera and palms look sculptural and add a resort-style tropical feel to any garden.” Is terracotta still trending? “Terracotta is still popular, along with more rustic, earthy, European-looking pots and vessels. [Alternatively, try] black or white planters and give them a designer feel by adding your own stripes, dots or triangles for an affordable upgrade.”

5 NEW YEAR

MONEY HABITS

HIT REFRESH ON YOUR FINANCES WITH THESE SAVVY TIPS FOR SAVING AND BUILDING WEALTH FROM EFFIE ZAHOS, AUTHOR OF A REAL GIRL’S GUIDE TO MONEY

1

DESIGN FILE

USE THE 48-HOUR RULE

Have you ever succumbed to temptation and purchased something without considering the consequences? If the answer is yes, you’re not alone. In 2021, put an end to impulse buying by vowing to follow the 48-hour rule. The rule dictates that you wait 48 hours before you make any purchasing decision. During this time, ask yourself these questions: DO I NEED IT? YES/NO. If yes, can I borrow it from somebody else? If no, can I rent it? If no, can I buy it second-hand? If it’s no to all of these, then by all means go ahead and buy it. TIP: Set up a ‘fun money’ account. Every time you follow the 48-hour rule, put the money that you were going to spend into this account. If after 48 hours you don’t buy the item, keep the money in this account. At the end of the year, check the balance of this account. You’ll then have the choice to either spend this money on something you really need, or keep on saving. You’ll be surprised how much joy this account will give you.

2 PHOTOGRAPHY (OPPOSITE) MICHELLE WILLIAMS * ACCORDING TO INVESTSMART RESEARCH

INVEST REGULARLY

What’s so exciting about investing is that even small amounts can make a big difference to your wealth over time. It’s all thanks to the magic of compounding returns. Let’s say, for example, you invest $2000 into an investment earning 6.5% annually (a standard return over the long-term in the share market*) and you can afford to back it up by adding $100 to the same investment every month. After 10 years, your total investment would be worth just over $20,000. At this stage your regular deposits would total $12,000 and your total interest would be a tad over $6000. Not bad, but as it hums along a little longer, you’ll reach a point where your wealth skyrockets as the returns on your investment become greater than your regular deposits. Expect to see that in year 19, for example, when your investment hits $48,594, of which regular deposits make up $22,800 and interest totals $23,794. TIP: Start small. Micro-investing apps such as CommSec Pocket or Raiz are a great way to build up confidence in investing in the sharemarket without needing large sums of money. Keep an eye on the fees, though. The smaller your balance, the bigger the impact fees can have.

CHECK THE FEES YOU PAY IN YOUR SUPER ACCOUNT. IF YOUR FUND IS AT THE HIGH END, IT COULD BE WORTH SWITCHING

3

4

BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND

If you were born in 1970, your super balance should be near $271,000 if you hope to be on track for a ‘comfortable’ retirement as defined by The Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia (ASFA). If you were born in 1980, your super balance should be close to $154,000. How much super do you have? Some quick ways to play catch-up include knowing the fund fees you’re paying. Super funds charge a variety of fees – some are set as a percentage of your balance, others are based on a fixed dollar amount. On average, fees work out to between 0.94% and 1.28% of your account balance annually, but you could pay as much as 2.73%. Check the fees you pay. If your fund is at the high end of the scale, it could be worth switching to a less expensive fund with a solid performance. TIP: Use the calculator at superguru.com.au/calculators/ super-detective to work out whether you’re on track or have some catching up to do.

SET UP A CASH CUSHION

How long could you survive if you lost your job? If the answer is until your next pay, then you seriously need to work on building up a cash cushion. A cash cushion is strictly for emergencies only; think loss of job, medical crisis or an unexpected financial curveball. The idea is that you have enough money in your cushion account to not only handle the crisis but, in the event of a job loss, cover your absolute essentials (food, shelter, clothing… designer shoes don’t count) until you find a job again. At the very least, you should aim to have a few thousand dollars in there, but most experts recommend having between three and six months’ worth of expenses stashed away. TIP: It can take a while to build up a cushion account, and if you have a mortgage it may pay to keep your savings there. Let’s say, for example, you have a $400,000 mortgage at 3.37% and you can afford to save $50 per week. By popping this into your home loan’s redraw or offset facility, you’ll not only have $36,000 in the account after 15 years. According to analysis by financial comparison website Canstar, you’ll save around $10,700 in interest on your home loan.

5

PAY ATTENTION TO UNIT PRICE

One way to cut the cost of your groceries is to understand how unit pricing works. Most supermarkets and large grocery stores are required to display unit pricing. According to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), you should find unit prices on in-store shelf price labels and promotional signs, online listings, and in newspaper and catalogue advertisements. You can use unit pricing to work out if you’re better off buying the bigger or smaller item of a particular product, or look at special offers to see if they do have the lowest unit price. The ACCC offers this example: – Laundry detergent X costs $7.62 for a 2.5-litre bottle. Its unit price is $3.05 per litre. – Laundry detergent Y costs $5.74 for a 1.5-litre bottle. Its unit price is $3.83 per litre. – Therefore, the cheapest product is laundry detergent X. QUT (Queensland University of Technology) research states it’s possible to slash $1700 off your annual grocery bill just by using unit pricing. TIP: When shopping for groceries online, change the filters to order products from lowest to highest in unit prices. Both Woolworths and Coles offer this feature. Finance commentator Effie Zahos is Editor-at-Large at financial comparison site Canstar and the author of A Real Girl’s Guide To Money (Are Media).

ew countries have a history more steeped in booze than Australia. Early convicts were partly paid in rum and by the 1830s we were knocking back an annual 13.6 litres of pure alcohol per head. Lest you think that level of consumption stemmed from an era where there was pretty much nothing else to do, by 1974 we were still accounting for 13.1 litres each. Again, that’s not ale or chardy, that’s pure alcohol. Despite our love of a pub, much of this was done at home, which was reflected in the rise of items such as the bar fridge – not to mention the art of stealthily adding empty bottles to the recycling bin late at night so the neighbours weren’t alerted by your cacophony of potential alcoholism. Beer and wine, however, were what the kids today would call “basic”. For a nation growing into its pretensions, liqueurs and aperitifs screamed good-life elegance. Part of the delicious appeal of these top-shelf drams were their aesthetics. In many Australian homes, brandy, whiskey and sherry were immediately decanted into heavy, purpose-built cut-crystal vessels – Bohemia was a favourite brand. If you were especially fancy, they even had silver necklaces on them with little plates, on which was engraved the type of booze contained within. Decanters were eventually joined by more exotic counterparts. As successive waves of migrants began to call Australia home, they brought with them their grappa, ouzo, arak and amaro. And at the same time, films and books were filled with cocktail-swilling sophisticates, like a certain British spy whose preference was for martinis “shaken not stirred”. Cue the arrival of silver shakers, jiggers, stirrers and strainers. For those who couldn’t be bothered with the sometimes finicky rituals and accoutrement of such libations, but still yearned for some visual oomph, the bottles themselves were – and continue to be – things of joy. The elegant cyan silhouette of Bombay Sapphire gin, for example, could well have come out of Yves Saint Laurent’s imagination. Not to mention the amber elegance of Cointreau’s broad-shouldered taper. With its ruby red label against a dark chocolate background, the Bailey’s bottle sang a sickly siren song and who didn’t grow up with an elongated bottle of sambuca towering above the collection like a rarely touched giraffe?

Aside from giving us the opportunity to say words like “Chartreuse”, “Drambuie” and “Courvoisier”, these collections invariably included a pristine white bottle of Malibu that smelled and tasted like suntan lotion, and the electric green Midori for those who liked a sugar-rush. You might have even had one of those tequila bottles with a little red sombrero. Displayed as an artful en masse ensemble, this mini skyline suggested to guests that they were entering an abode that knew how to have a good time and a refined one at that. Well, for the first few rounds anyway. That said, this line up of liquid temptation could be too much for some. One of this writer’s mates was nicknamed “The Exorcist” by my dad. Because every time he came over, the spirits would disappear. Like many items of value, it was therefore kept under lock and (frequently poorly hidden) key in a handsome timber cabinet. Expressly forbidden from its contents, the booze cupboard became an irresistible challenge, a mysterious portal just aching to be defiled. Tell a mildly curious kid that she is expressly barred from going anywhere near a certain part of the house, what do you think happened the minute her olds left for a dinner party? Which of course led to the revelation that the Campari bottle she’d just taken several throat-searing swigs of could be topped up with water. At least until its ruby hue was diluted to a blushing pink.

At the same time just a few suburbs away, her parents were being led into a separate room from the one in which they’d just eaten. Here, in a post-prandial flourish, a shrine to intoxication was thrown open with a tinkle of tiny glasses. Say what you will about us mischievous teens, at least we weren’t driving home afterwards. Be that as it may, here at HB we are all for resurrecting the drinks cabinet and trolley. Especially now. Because if there’s any year worth toasting the end of, it’s 2020.
