EDITOR’S LETTER

Welcome Heather Young, Editor

It’s a new year, and for me, it’s also the start of my new role as Editor of Ideal Home. I’m no stranger to this wonderful magazine, having been part of the Ideal Home family for well over a decade, and I’m thrilled to be its newest custodian. Our previous editor, Vanessa, was the calm captain for five years, culminating in our centenary celebrations last year. Her warmth, wit and all-round interiors brilliance will be greatly missed by all. And so 2021 marks a new chapter for Ideal Home. What does this year hold? If last year taught me anything, it’s the importance of the place we call home. Lockdowns have seen us become more intimately acquainted with our homes than ever. We’ve rejigged, redecorated, reinvented. I’ve gone one step further, and a move to a new home is (hopefully!) on the horizon. Whatever improvements you’re planning, turn to page 56 for the chance to win £150-worth of Crown EasyClean paint. Happy decorating!

ART COLLECTORS’ CALENDAR

Abstract wall art calendar, £39.95, Desenio

Build a gallery wall throughout the year with Desenio’s art print calendar. The designs are printed on thick paper with a smart, matt finish – just tear along the perforation to remove the date, leaving you with a 30x40cm print. Frame or hang with clips for an easyto-update formation. There’s both a botanical collection and a kids’ calendar, too.

The STYLE EDITOR Michela Colling, Ideal Home’s tastemaker-in-chief, shares her top news from the high street

WONDER WOOL The Wool Room is championing this miracle material, dispelling the myth that it’s itchy, difficult to wash or too warm. The wool helps make its luxury bedding naturally temperature regulating, biodegradable and hypoallergenic. What’s more, the wool will absorb harmful VOCs in the air. The wool used is now traceable, too – you can scan the bedding label with a smartphone to see the British farmers that ethically and sustainably produced the quality wool from well-cared for flocks.

Smooth sounds It’s taken a while, but the iconic British audio brand has launched its first Bluetooth speaker. Worth the wait though, the Roberts Beacon wireless speakers not only look good from every angle, but radiate powerful sound, too. If you don’t like tech ruining your perfect shelfie, the nine colour options mean you should be able to find one that complements your scheme. The Hero Piece

FREE-STANDING ISLAND AT COX & COX With kitchens shifting from closed-off rooms to open-plan sociable spaces, there’s a growing trend to make the kitchen feel less, well, kitchen-like by adding stand-alone pieces, such as dressers, cabinets and free-standing islands. The new Lotte is ideal for not only an instant kitchen update, but it’s also a great solution for kitchens that are too small for a full-sized island. With additional worktop, prep area and hidden storage, the overhang also offers a spot to sit.

Surprise in store!

NEXT HOME’S INDUSTRIAL PENDANTS The trend for bare bulb lighting has moved beyond the raw warehouse look, right into the mainstream. The LED Dillon pendants are a new, designer-style evolution with oversized, molten glass bulbs and statement filaments to add a chic twist to their industrial roots. Hang a cluster for even more impact. Lotte island unit, £1,250, Cox & Cox

Ikea’s buy-back scheme Time to update that chest of drawers? Ikea are buying back their pre-loved furniture and, depending on the condition, the trade-in could earn you an Ikea voucher, with no expiration date, for up to 50% of the original price. Items will then be resold as second-hand in the ‘As-Is Area’ of stores. Anything that isn’t snapped up will be recycled. The tricky part? Once the piece has been accepted online the item will need to be brought back to store fully assembled – the upside? Saving a good piece of furniture from landfill.

With the launch of Buy Back we are giving a second life to many more Ikea products and creating more easy and affordable solutions to help people live more sustainably

The house is now worth around £1.375m.

Interiors are rarely finished. Instead, they evolve along with us and what once seemed like a great fit, may need an update a few years down the line

he kids were getting bigger and the small living room in our old 1930s house was very small,’ says Karen van Tongeren. ‘We needed more space, and this townhouse in central Haarlem fitted the bill. We had three months before we moved in, so rather than make any big structural changes, we decided to focus on redecorating – replacing the floors and painting every square inch. Many of our neighbours had ripped out original features in their houses, but details, such as the hallway’s floral tiles, the big arched window in the living room, and the lily details that are carved into the glass on each interior door, are the things we fell in love with when we first saw the house. We wanted to keep these, and we still cherish them today. Originally, the large open-plan living and dining space worked perfectly for family life, but after a couple of years we decided to break up that big open space, so we fitted floor-to-ceiling bookcases that act as a visual divide between the two rooms. This was a great solution for a while, but as the kids got older and started having friends over more and more, we ended up adding steel-framed doors as a noise barrier, so Luc and I can eat in peace in the dining room while the kids watch TV or hang out next door. Although the house is currently decorated in a neutral palette, I’d like to start experimenting more. I feel I’m playing it a little safe, particularly when it comes to my colour choices. I am getting braver, and now I feel ready to introduce a bit more colour. At Christmastime the dividing doors between the living and dining rooms are flung wide open so the family can spend as much time together as possible. I love all the preparations leading up to the big event – making everything nice and cosy, bringing out the candles and stocking up on firewood. Time spent with family and friends is what Christmas is about for me.’

Christmas tree ‘Our first year here, I got so excited about the high ceilings that we ended up getting a tree that was way too big. Now we go for a tree that’s tall and narrow.’ BUY THE KEY PIECES Try glittered Black baubles, £25 for 12, Cox & Cox. Gold star garland, £9.95, Graham and Green, is similar

‘The staircase is original, but it took a lot of work stripping layer after layer of old paint before giving it a fresh coat. We kept the handrail in wood, as it’s likely this is how it would have been originally.’ BUY THE KEY PIECES Similar sized planter, £100, Design Vintage

BLACK FRAME Provides a contemporary contrast to the period details

Dining room ‘When we divided up this space, we added bookcases, which we wanted to look like they’d been part of the house for the last 100 years.’ Later, the steel-framed doors were added, too. BUY THE KEY PIECES Try Brooklyn cone pendants, £69 each, Industville. Extra large Hempy jute rug, £399, La Redoute, is a good match

Karen and Luc fell in love with the house’s period details, such as the lily motifs that are carved into doors and etched onto the glass panes. So, instead of removing them during the renovation, they retained them as features in the newly decorated spaces. BUY THE KEY PIECES Try Bow large Arc floor lamp in copper and white marble, £149, Made. The Damien round side table, £156, Nest, is similar

‘A black kitchen might be bang-on-trend now, but it was still quite a daring choice when we chose it eight years ago.’ Karen and Luc got a stonemason to colour-match the flooring to the original granite floor in the hallway. I approached this house like a fashion designer taking a classic little black dress, deconstructing it, then adding killer satin heels

aula and Matthew Gowar embarked on a labourof-love restoration when they moved into their home a decade ago. It hadn’t been touched for 40 years: ‘Every room was a 1970s throwback of patterned carpets, woodchip and flowery wallpaper. We installed central heating and moved in three days before Christmas. Caspar arrived two weeks later,’ says Paula. ‘I drew up the plans for six separate stages of planning applications, including a glass side-return extension.’ Growing up, she had seen her father run his construction company and developed a passion for spatial planning. She now works as an interior designer (balancedesign. co.uk) and Matthew is the founder of Range Left Graphic Design Studio, so the couple had plenty of ideas. However, when the extension’s shell was finished, they hit a cashflow crisis: ‘We continued to live in the rest of the house, doing work as and when funds permitted. I remember all four of us living in one room while the rest of the house was plastered. We had a two-ring hob and I cooked all over the house. I even made a cake in the hallway once!’ Further structural work followed, including underpinning the basement and redoing the roof. ‘We had a few dramas during the following wet summer when the top floor became waterlogged and the ceiling of Caspar’s bedroom caved in.’ Their renovation story will enliven dinner parties for years to come. ‘I was able to tackle lots of work myself,’ says Paula, ‘from repairing cornicing to creating period-style panelling and laying a parquet floor salvaged from Matthew’s mother’s house.’ Now the house is done, they love to go all-out for Christmas: ‘I like opulence with lashings of indulgence,’ says Paula. ‘I’m a bit of a magpie and love shiny things. I love scattering glass votives in the bay window and admiring the twinkling light.’

O

ne of the best parts of designing our interiors is all the fabulous decisions we get to make when it comes to the materials, colours and furnishings. From the layout to colour schemes and furniture, these choices are important, as they determine how we feel about our homes and the environment in which we live. Among all those choices is one that’s very easy to get right: the paint. Whether it’s a high-traffic area, such as a hallway, which can be prone to

knocks and scuffs, a kitchen where splashes and spills are common, or a kid’s bedroom where you’re likely to find the odd handprint, this versatile paint can be used on multiple surfaces – from wood and walls to metalwork. You won’t be let down on the choice of colours either, as the easyclean® range features 50 stylish shades. So, whether you’re after soothing blues, calming greens, something more vibrant or a timeless, neutral shade, this quality paint will treat your walls to good looks that last, whatever your style.

The fact that everything in this house needed a loving hand appealed to us, as we could get it exactly as we wanted

hen Lykke and Thomas decided to start a family, their hearts were set on a period house with a big garden. A 100-year-old detached villa in Vanløse, Copenhagen, ticked all the boxes. They were charmed by its stainedglass windows, ornate ceilings and three interlinking reception rooms. ‘It hadn’t been touched for 50 years and still had the original kitchen,’ says Lykke (lykkestunder.dk). ‘There was ancient hessian covering all the walls and water damage in the living room.’ Upstairs, two rooms have been knocked together to create a spacious new bathroom, while a ground-floor bathroom has been transformed into the kitchen. ‘We removed a wall between that and the dining room to make the spaces flow. What works well is the open-plan feel, but the glazed internal doors mean the reception rooms can be closed off from each other, too. There’s room for play, entertaining, relaxing and eating all at the same time,’ says Lykke. A palette of white, grey, beige and pink has been used throughout, while furniture inherited from Lykke’s grandparents is mixed with modern designs and lots of textures, for a homely feel. ‘Furniture and accessories have to be more than just beautiful; they should serve a purpose. I like to change up accessories and restyle in a calm and simple way. To break things up, I’ll group items in similar tones but with different finishes.’ A neutral backdrop works well for the Christmas decorations Lykke makes using natural materials from the garden and a nearby forest, which fill the house with the scents of spruce and pine cones. ‘For the whole year I look forward to getting started on them. It makes the short days of winter a lot more fun when you have some good old traditions to hold onto and look forward to.’

There were a few tears and tantrums along the way, but I love the calm, relaxed home that we’ve created

hen Calsey and Mickey first viewed this house, it didn’t exactly blow them away. ‘It wasn’t love at first sight,’ says Calsey. ‘We’d been looking for a place to buy together for a while and although the location was lovely, the exterior of this house wasn’t. Also, it had been empty for 10 months and clearly hadn’t been updated for a lot longer, so I didn’t have high hopes before I stepped inside. But, when I did, I could see it had good bones and could be a beautiful home. Looking beyond the mouldy carpets and swirly wallpaper, I knew what needed doing to make it a modern space that would work with our busy lifestyle. Other house viewers couldn’t see beyond the terrible décor and bad space planning, but I knew all it needed was a little thought and some love and attention.’ The house isn’t huge, so the couple had to think carefully about how to make the most of its footprint. ‘This meant putting new walls up as well as knocking some down,’ says Calsey. ‘The kitchen was tiny, but the living room was long and narrow. I wanted to create a smaller, cosier space, so we put in a dividing wall and knocked through to give the kitchen a dining area. We also rebuilt a bedroom wall and knocked down a small wall in the bathroom. When it came to the décor, I wanted Scandi elements, with graphic shapes and black accessories to give it an edge. I love moving things around to see how they look in a different room or from a different angle. I’ve kept memories of my journey on Instagram (@at.home.with.missb). We stayed with Mickey’s parents while doing the work ourselves, and I decided I wanted to be in by Christmas, which only gave us three months. Luckily, we worked together really well to get it finished on time. ’

till the heart of our homes, but when it comes to kitchen colour, style, design details and appliances, there are some exciting new trends, from cabinetry to appliances. Whether you’re planning a full redo or just replacing elements, where should you start? We asked the experts… WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST TRENDS FOR CABINETRY? ‘The industrial look is here to stay, but it’s reaching another level of sophistication,’ says Darren Watts from Wren Kitchens. But it’s not all industrial, with Art Deco tipped by Darren as one to watch, along with retro-style kitchens in blush, mustard or cinnamon shades. ‘We’re also seeing a rise in organic influences and a modern take on country-style kitchens as younger generations develop an interest in

older styles and chintz prints – think peacock teal, forest green and navy-blue cabinets,’ says Darren. ‘I haven’t specified a plain white kitchen in over 12 years,’ says Laura Clark from Lamp Architects, ‘and I can’t see it reappearing as a trend any time soon. We’re seeing colour, texture and feature patterns, once reserved for bedrooms or living rooms, now in the kitchen. Watch out for florals coupled with reeded timber and fluted glass.’ ARE WE STILL BIG ON SHAKER? ‘No,’ says Laura. ‘Minimalist and simple looks are big for door styles in 2021, yet when combined with warm colours, this once paredback style becomes glamorous.’ HANDLES OR NO HANDLES? ‘With most elements in the kitchen being stripped back with

complementary colour schemes and textures taking centre stage, choosing handles can be really tricky,’ says Laura. ‘Natural materials, such as leather and timber, can be hard to keep clean. Textured doors look incredible without handles, whereas slim pull handles can really complement a plain matt cabinet door.’ For Darren, it’s about choosing a handle style that works with your kitchen’s look: ‘Sleek handleless cabinetry is a core part of the industrial trend, while semi-circular handles work with the Art Deco look. For a natural, organic style, leather handles or no handles work best, while wooden handles finish off a modern-country design.’ ANY NEW STORAGE SOLUTIONS? ‘Finally, we have a new contender for a kitchen’s most desirable item,’ says Laura. ‘Requests for the “statement island” have been

96

replaced by the “statement larder”. Although the island isn’t going anywhere fast, having practical walk-in storage is one of the best ways to shift large amounts of kitchen kit off our worktops.’ WHAT ARE TIPPED TO BE THE BEST MATERIALS AND COLOURS FOR WORKSURFACES IN 2021? ‘We’ve recently seen a big trend in highly-veined and patterned marble, with the harsh, monolithic granite worktop being consigned – thankfully – to the 1990s,’ says Laura. Darren agrees: ‘We’re predicting over-the-top veined styles as well as deep, dark blacks and icy whites becoming even more popular in 2021. When it comes to material, topping the charts has to be quartz – not only does it look fabulous, it suits all styles of kitchen and it’s extremely durable. Plus, we are

point of view. ‘Try laying extra-long plank tiles in a parquet pattern for a stylish, natural finish.’ WHAT ABOUT SINK AND TAP STYLES? ‘For 2021, I think it’s all about simplicity,’ says Laura. ‘Steer away from the huge, commercial-style taps and go for minimalist brassware that complements your kitchen rather than jars against it.’ Darren is loving the look of a traditional sink given a modern twist, like a deep black Belfast sink. ‘And as our lives get busier, we’re seeing requests for instant hotwater taps, from the likes of

I’d also suggest a combination microwave and warming drawer, along with an induction hob with downdraft ventilation that recirculates clean air around your kitchen. Induction is so much more energy efficient than gas – and who wants to individually scrub pan supports as opposed to simply wiping the surface?’ ANY SMART TECH WORTH INVESTING IN? ‘Quiet, yet highly-efficient, integrated extraction should be one of your first considerations,’ says Laura. ‘Our homes – and kitchens – are increasingly being controlled by smart devices,’ says Darren. ‘You can now switch on your coffee machine while still in bed, set the oven before leaving for work and use your voice to turn on the lights – perfect if you are on the go all the time.’ As we focus more and more on sustainability, Simon is quick to point out that customers are demanding better eco-designed

HOW LOUISA AND DOUG DID IT ‘We like a separate dining room for entertaining, so rather than knock through, we extended our long, narrow kitchen to the side. I’m a design consultant (@futureicons_), so we saved on architect’s fees and planned it ourselves. We like high-quality craftsmanship and lots of detail, so took our ideas to a local kitchen maker, Pluck. Everything’s solid, thoughtfully designed and well made – both beautiful and

practical. Having invested in the cabinetry, I shopped around for appliances and, as we were buying them all from one place, I haggled to get the extractor half price. For four months we used makeshift facilities in the dining room and washed up in the bathroom. Fitting took three weeks and cost about £3,000. The new space is great for cooking and entertaining and it will stand the test of time.’ FUTURISTIC PENDANT Updates the traditional and retro elements in the room

WE LOVE The thoughtfully designed extra-thick wires on the main section reduce creasing, minimising the need to iron. PROBLEM SOLVED The handy attachment holds small items without the need for pegs. TOP TIP Put clothes on an airer, rather than directly on a radiator, so air can circulate.

When outdoor drying isn’t an option, Vileda offers a more eco-friendly way to get the job done than flicking the switch on a costly tumble dryer…

Compact solution It seems there’s never enough space or time, so as soon as clothes come out of the washer, pop up the Vileda Sprint 15 3-tier airer, £19.99. The strong steel frame opens and closes with ease and won’t take up too much space. WE LOVE The convenient hooks are ideal for hanging blouses and shirts on clothes hangers. Make it work for you LOUISA’S CHOICE: TERRAZZO WORKTOPS

Often used for flooring in shopping centres and office blocks, terrazzo now brings colour and pattern into our kitchens Originating in ancient Venice, terrazzo was invented as a way to use up marble waste – early upcycling at its best!

Q

What is terrazzo? There are two types: cement and resin. Cement is the traditional form; it’s durable and usually less expensive than resin. Modern resin terrazzo includes epoxy resin, binding aggregate and pigments. It’s more colourful, less prone to cracking and staining and has a smoother finish – perfect for worktops.

Q

Why is terrazzo good for worktops? It is low maintenance (cementbased needs annual resealing, resin doesn’t) and can be cut for sinks, hobs and drainer grooves. However, most people choose terrazzo for its dynamic design. You can go as bold or calm as you like, match colours and even place chunks where you want them.

Q FEATURE LINDA CLAYTON PHOTOGRAPH MALCOLM MENZIES

How do I buy terrazzo worktops? There are a few UK suppliers offering a range of standard

colours and designs. Order samples to view in your kitchen. For bespoke terrazzo, either visit the company or factory to choose marble chippings or have samples made to a brief.

Choose a work surface with marble used in a modern way

Q

How is it installed? Templates are made on site (by your builder or terrazzo supplier), then the worktops are cut and polished in the factory before being installed.

Q

Is it expensive? For authentic terrazzo, expect to pay from £700sq m for cement-based and from £800sq m for resin-based, including templating and installation. You can also buy mineral or quartzbased terrazzo-style designs. Try LG HiMac’s new solid surfaces, from £300 linear metre, as well as speckled terrazzo-look laminates.

BEST FOR...

Avoid acid-based cleaners; use hot water and a neutral cleaning agent. Stubborn stains can usually be removed with a pad or brush

GLOBE LIGHTS A traditional style that works with the cabinetry

HOW RACHAEL AND TOM DID IT ‘We turned the old family bathroom into our bedroom en suite, and so this space, which used to be a bedroom, became the main bathroom. You can’t beat a hotel-style scheme and we’ve stayed in some beautiful places, so I got ideas that way as well as from Instagram, where I have my own account (@rachael somervilleinteriors). The new bathroom had to work for our daughter as well as for guests. Originally, I wanted the bath in the centre with a shower behind, but it didn’t fit so we built a shower enclosure with screens by a local glass company. This suits the space perfectly. To give the room a contemporary twist, we chose a minimalist bath. This bathroom was part of a mammoth whole-house renovation, taking almost three years.’

THE PROPERTY A five-bed 1920s semi in Barnet, north London.

WHAT IT COST

‘We knocked down a wall between the bathroom and separate loo to create a space big enough for a bath and double walk-in shower. HOW AERON AND MATTHEW DID IT ‘There was a bathroom and separate loo, and neither had any personality. We decided to knock down the wall between the two and extend over our garage, to create space for both a shower and a bath. Looking online for inspiration, I saw polished plaster walls used in Moroccan bathrooms and loved the look. Then I watched a TV show featuring polished plaster walls by experts Chrysalis Surface Design, so I gave them a call. We opted for a black finish to make the room feel cosy and they got it done in just two days. We’re thrilled with the result, and adding pale floor tiles balanced out the look. We didn’t want chrome taps, but used a combination of brass and black instead, which really warms up the space. The build cost £6,500 and the room took three and a half weeks to complete. Having a double shower has been a game changer. We can get ready in double-quick time! It’s like having a hotel spa in the house.’ ‘The tub is tucked behind the shower wall and it feels very cosy. It’s comfy, deep and relaxing.’

BATHROOM PROJECT

AGED BRASS Unlacquered finishes oxidise over time, giving a lovely patina

ABOVE ‘We wanted to get as much light into this area as possible, so fitted two tall mirrors and globe wall lights with brass arms that match the showers. The pale-grey hexagonal tiles help to brighten it up, too.’

‘We can’t live without the double shower now. Getting ready in the mornings is stress-free. We chose a wet room look with a continuous tiled floor instead of a shower tray for a streamlined look.’ Calder shower valve, riser and rose, £843.70, The Cast Iron Bath Company. Noir handset, £90, Bathstore. Crosswater shower panel, £202.99, Drench

Arles mirrors, £139 each, Made. Claudio one-light armed sconces, £72.74 each, Wayfair. Industrial metal and mango vanity cabinet, £855, Tikamoon. Noir three-hole wall-mounted basin mixer taps, £250 each; rectangular ceramic basins, £89 each, all Bathstore

BATHROOM PROJECT

Make it work for you AERON’S CHOICE: POLISHED PLASTER

Hygienic, seamless and beautiful, polished plaster is the hottest tiling alternative to hit style-savvy bathrooms It may have been around since Egyptian times, but polished plaster is enjoying a resurgence, not least because it is grubby grout free! This surface is also easy to clean and is suitable for use on floors, walls and ceilings.

Q

Is all polished plaster the same? No, there are various application techniques and ingredients, from traditional Moroccan Tadelakt and marble-based Venetian, to modern cementbased products. Some are 100% waterproof or can be waxed to repel water, while others are more textural, colour-led, extra durable, stainproof etc. Search for specialists online and explain what you are seeking design and performance-wise.

Choose polished plaster for a grout-free, smooth finish

Q

How is it applied? It involves building up thin layers of plaster and polishing to achieve a seamless finish. Venetian plaster is waxed if you need water protection. You could technically do it yourself, but it is probably best left to the professionals, especially if a watertight finish is essential.

Q

What are the benefits? The seamless finish that can be achieved across surfaces is the big story here. The look can be very sleek and contemporary, or more rustic for an earthy effect. Adding pigments provides customisable colour,

Are there any downsides? The surface the plaster is trowelled onto must be completely rigid, otherwise fissures may appear. Some polished plaster, notably Tadelakt, develops very fine hairline cracks in time, which is part of the appeal and won’t affect durability, but isn’t everyone’s cup of tea.

fter years living in a two-bedroom flat, Larissa Alexis and her husband were so desperate for space that they took on a doer upper. ‘We found a run-down house that we could never normally have afforded,’ says Larissa. ‘Its three storeys were so dark and damp, it was virtually uninhabitable. It also had a collapsing lean-to and a small, low-ceilinged cellar.’ PLANNING SPACE ‘We loved the designs of Henri

Bredenkamp at Studio 30 Architects and began consulting with him even before we’d completed on the house,’ says Larissa. ‘Our brief was vague – we knew we wanted a lighter, more open-plan layout and my husband was keen to convert the basement into a fun space.’ MAKING IT WORK The couple moved into rented accommodation during the project. ‘Our builders removed walls and built the rear glass extension on the ground floor, converted the garage into a study, and finally dug out and enlarged the basement,’ says Larissa. ‘It was frightening to see how many walls came down and the amount of steel that was used to hold it all up. But seeing the completed basement was a real high point, as this was a completely new part of the house, which feels very different to the rest.’ INTERIOR DESIGN Each room is fitted with bespoke

joinery, and full-height glass doors make them flow together. ‘The engineered oak parquet flooring was something I wasn’t prepared to compromise on, and it was expensive,’ says Larissa. ‘To offset the cost, we chose fake marble worktops, which are still beautiful and practical. You can’t choose fittings too early, as once building begins decisions need to be made quickly. We definitely maxed out on the extensions! It’s lovely to have so much space and to be able to host big gatherings, which was always our hope.’

BEFORE & AFTER 5 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT...

Basements Henri Bredenkamp (studio30architects.co.uk) gives us the lowdownÉ

1

IT’S NOT A DIY JOB Specialist companies will hold appropriate insurance cover and be able to offer warranties.

2

YOU’LL PROBABLY NEED PLANNING PERMISSION Excavating a new basement is likely to require it, but converting an existing residential cellar or basement into a living space may not. The Planning Portal has more details (planningportal.co.uk).

3

THERE ARE RISKS Excavation could undermine existing foundations, leading to instability or even the collapse of supporting walls – another reason to use an experienced company.

The basement has a cinema, gym, steam room and ping pong table. Glass doors lead to the light well

4

THEY MUST BE DRY Water penetration should be carefully controlled. Building regulations for cellars and basements state that all floors and walls below ground level need to be waterproofed.

LIGHTING IS KEY A welldesigned light well with tall windows or doors is the most obvious way of introducing not only natural light, but also ventilation.

WHAT WE’VE LEARNED

Positioning the kitchen in the centre “of the house works perfectly because that’s where everyone tends to congregate, and we wanted enough space to entertain large numbers of friends and family

YOU U CAN SLE EEP BETTER with the amazing

W

HATEVERyour sleep problems, the

dream of a good night’s sleep has now become a reality - thanks to a breakthrough invention - the Gx Suspension Pillow. All conventional pillows flatten significantly during sleep - becoming less supportive and more uncomfortable as the night progresses. The result of this is disturbed and broken sleep, frustration and the fruitless search for a better pillow. That search is now over!

for Ideal Home readers with code

ID1 SINGLE PILLOW TWIN PACK

Suspension Pillow

As if all these benefits were not enough, you can purchase the pillow with our 30-night comfort guarantee – total satisfaction or your money back*. Tens of thousands of delighted customers have already rediscovered the benefits of a great night’s sleep, why not join them? Now available with FREE delivery for Ideal Home readers, use code ID1.

To stop the flattening we’ve come up with a solution that’s so simple it’s ingenious. By the clever installation of ‘double X’ internal ties we have produced the world’s first pillow to retain much more of its plumped shape all night long. The ties work to pull the pillow in and up so that your head and neck are gently cradled and supported in softly sprung comfort. As well as having the revolutionary internal ties, the pillow shell is 100% cotton with our superb hypoallergenic Polycoz filling, and we have added a unique integral air vent to help keep you cool through the night.

Actor Rula Lenska had this to say: It is rare that something advertised as unique and life changing turns out to be true!! I have a chronic back and neck situation and I can honestly say these pillows make a huge difference!! Comfortable…supportive…and positively magical for my neck!! Congratulations! Many, many thanks

STYLE THROWBACK

THEN… AND NOW

1945

To commemorate our centenary year, we’re dipping into our archive to find an inspiring image and put a modern spin on the look THE ORIGINAL We’re drawn into this formal but friendly living space, complete with roaring fire and rosy-toned furnishings. The wing-back armchairs, curvy loveseat and ornate, gilded frames bring a sense of grandeur, along with the polished, dark wood finishes, all offset by the cosy rug and ochre accents. THE UPDATE We’ve chosen a more relaxed, rounded shape for the loveseat and picked out rustic elements of grainy wood for the sofa legs, bowl and textured stoneware vase. The uplifting pairing of pink and ochre is warmed up with the rich shades of the rug, eucalyptus and polished brass lamp.
