“When you promise your parents you’ll update a ’50s home in Columbus, OH, they’re doubtful about buying, you rise to the challenge!” says Catherine. “The living room had wood paneling and lacked dimension. Bryan and I redid the fireplace with marble, built a new mantel, reworked the built-ins, then added fresh paint all around. My grandparents’ velvet sofa and an antique-look mirror—it’s actually from Lowe’s—blend old and new. It was so amazing hearing my parents yell ‘Wow!’ when they saw the results.” 10 HGTV Magazine

lots of p-o-p The second she laid eyes on this peel-and-stick wallpaper on Instagram, homeowner Kate Eckert in Brick, NJ, knew it was “the one.” “I was redoing our dining room on a budget by surrounding the table and chairs and stone fireplace with vibrant color,” says Kate. She added blue pop on pop with teal art and a rug, then hung coral curtains for contrast. Boston terrier Charlotte is a cute black-and-white touch.

farmhouse fresh Rustic style got reinvigorated in this Catonsville, MD, dining room. While the huge reclaimed-wood trestle table may be pure country, designer Laura Hodges edged it up with grays and black and graphic motifs—the end chairs’ striped fabric, the sideboard’s nailhead design, the rug’s diamond shapes. It still has that old American soul, she says, “but the whole space feels modern.”

SAFE DRIVING STRATEGIES Protect Yourself, Your Family, and Your Vehicle
PRESENTED BY
from Wildlife Collisions
Fall is a great time to hit the open road for autumn foliage viewing or scenic drives. But it’s also a peak time for wildlife collisions. Take care to protect everyone you love with these safe-driving strategies. When you’re prepared, you’re in control and ready to enjoy the ride. WILDLIFE 101: Wild animals are most active at dusk and dawn, when they’re searching for food. Research your route before you set out and identify areas where animals are most often encountered. BE AWARE: Drive in the center lane to give yourself a buffer from wildlife that may wander onto the roadway. Observe animal crossing signs and keep a watchful eye on the road ahead. Ask passengers to be on the lookout, too. TAKE IT SLOW: Although the open road may tempt you to pick up the pace, take it slow to give yourself time to brake. Know that animals often travel in herds. If one crosses the road, more may follow. SAFETY TOOLS: Make sure everyone in your vehicle is buckled up. Use the high beams when driving at night (dim them for oncoming cars). Use your horn to scare animals off the road and to alert other cars to danger. COLLISION CONTROL: Swerving to avoid an animal could potentially send your car into oncoming traffic or into a tree. If you do collide with an animal, get off the road safely and activate your hazard lights. Call the police to file a report for your insurance carrier and take photos. CONTROL YOUR INSURANCE: When you enroll in the free KnowYourDrive® program from American Family Insurance, you get access to innovative driving technology to help you drive safer—and you get discounts for safe driving, too.*

Oops! You took out your tablecloth and it’s stained. “Try a little stain magic,” says Patric Richardson, a textile expert based in St. Paul, MN, known as The Laundry Evangelist. For red wine and yellowed white wine stains, make a paste of liquid hand soap and an oxygen-based stain buster—such as OxiClean Versatile stain remover powder—and sponge on; for gravy or grease stains, apply
a mix of equal amounts water and vinegar. Leave on for 30 minutes, douse with hot water from a teakettle, and let dry. For wax stains from candles, remove drippings with a butter knife, place brown paper bags on both sides of the fabric, iron on the lowest setting, then lift the paper (the wax absorbs into it); repeat until all the wax is lifted.

Oops! Your
overworked garbage disposal is making gurgling sounds. Turn it off and hit the reset button, typically located on the bottom or lower back of the garbage disposal, says Aaron Mulder, co-owner and operations manager of Mr. Rooter Plumbing in San Antonio, TX. “Rebooting it could dislodge anything caught in the machine.” If there’s still gurgling, you may need to physically unjam whatever is stuck. With the power off, use a hex wrench to spin the grinding chamber on the bottom of the disposal to loosen up debris. “If the wrench doesn’t turn easily, it’s OK to use some force until it turns freely in both directions,” says Mulder. To head off issues next time, avoid putting fibrous foods like onion skins and celery, and starchy stuff like potatoes, turkey bones, and fruit pits down the drain, as they may impede the blades or cause clogs.
Oops! The pumpkin pie caved in. Wait until the pie has cooled completely—about 4 hours—and cover the whole thing with a generous layer of whipped cream, says Maplewood, NJ, pastry chef Ellen Gray, whose blog is No More Mr. Nice Pie. Or make a big maple leaf out of pie crust scraps (look up the shape online for inspo). Brush the “leaf” with an egg wash (1 beaten egg + 1 tablespoon of water) and bake it in the oven on a parchment-lined baking sheet at 400°F until golden. Let cool before placing it over the pie. In case you’re wondering, the reasons pies sink in the first place are if they’re overbaked or put in a fridge while they’re still warm, so try to avoid both.
Oops! Your dog
was fed people food and barfed on your rug. Scoop up the mess with paper towels and blot the liquid. “Do this as soon as possible, as vomit can discolor carpet fibers,” says Melissa Maker, host of Clean My Space on YouTube. Follow with an enzyme-based cleaner like Chaos & Cuddles stain & odor remover or Nature’s Miracle Advanced stain and odor eliminator. Heads up: “You never want to vacuum anything that’s wet—moisture can ruin the insides of the machine,” says Maker.

Oops! Your oven needs to be speed-cleaned.
Avoid traditional oven cleaners and the self-cleaning function. “They can stink up your kitchen for hours,” says Ron Shimek, president of Mr. Appliance in Waco, TX. Instead, attack stuck-on food by mixing ¼ cup powdered laundry detergent and 1 cup white vinegar into a paste while you heat your oven for 5 minutes at 180°F. Turn the oven off, put on extreme heat-resistant rubber gloves, and spread the paste over any gunk using a sponge. Leave it on for 1 hour, scrub, and wipe clean.
Oops! You’ve run out of storage containers.
Stash gravy, soups, mashed potatoes, or green beans in mason jars, says Julie Blanner, an entertaining blogger based in St. Louis, MO. A blender pitcher or a thermos also work. And large glasses or plastic cups, topped with tinfoil or plastic wrap and secured with a rubber band, can hold everything from stuffing to a slice of apple pie.
Oops! The turkey is still frozen.
You can cook a turkey that’s fully or partially frozen—just allot extra time, says chef Keith Sarasin, coauthor of Farmers Dinner Cookbook: A Story In Every Bite. Do 50% more time for a completely frozen one, and 25% more for a somewhat frozen one. Rule of thumb: A 12-pound bird will take 3 hours if thawed, so cook it for 4 ½ hours if it’s totally frozen. You can also submerge the entire bird in a large container or clean sink filled with cold water. Soak for 30 minutes per pound and flip it every 30 minutes. And next time, be an early bird. “It takes 24 hours for every 5 pounds of turkey to thaw in the fridge,” says Sarasin. “Set a reminder on your phone to start the thaw.”

Oops! The kids aren’t staying seated.
Rope them into the conversation and have some fun! “Announce that it’s time for everyone to go around the table and talk about what they’re grateful for this year,” says Los Angeles–based parenting expert Maritere Bellas, author of Raising Bilingual Children. “Bring out paper and crayons, then have the kids draw what people say.” If younger children are restless near the end of the meal, there’s no shame in letting them go play in another room.

Oops! There
aren’t enough serving utensils for all the dishes.
Oops! You forgot to buy the rolls. Permission to skip rolls, granted. “No one will miss them given the beautiful carb spread of mashed potatoes, stuffing, and roasted yams,” says Christy Wilson, R.D.N., a nutritionist based in Tucson, AZ. Next year, you can always buy rolls in advance and freeze them in a sealable bag, with the air pressed out. And it never hurts to have a tube of ready-to-bake biscuits on hand.
Oops! The
mashed potatoes are gluey. This happens when too much starch is released, often from overzealous mashing. “There’s no going back, but you can turn sticky mashed potatoes into delicious croquettes,” says Frank Proto, director of operations at the Institute of Culinary Education in New York City. Chill for 15 minutes, fold in about 6 ounces of cheese per pound of potatoes—Parmesan, cheddar, any kind you have on hand— and form tablespoon-size amounts into small sausage shapes. Dip each croquette into flour, then into lightly whisked egg, and finally into a bowl of bread crumbs. Place on a baking sheet in the oven at 350°F for 12 to 15 minutes until golden brown. In the future, consider using more forgiving potatoes. Idaho potatoes are lower in moisture than red or fingerling potatoes, and less likely to gum up.
52 HGTV Magazine
“In a pinch, put the utensils you have with the most popular sides, and for the rest, use backup options like soup spoons and the fork and tongs from your grill set—not so pretty but they get the job done,” says Jillian Smith, owner of OneTouch Events in Atlanta, GA. If you’re lacking ladles for gravy, salad dressing, or cranberry sauce, serve them in individual portions in shooters or shot glasses—and make like that was your plan all along!
Oops! There’s
no room in your fridge. “Toss bulky containers such as nearly empty tubs of butter and almost-gone juice cartons, and freeze anything that can be frozen,” says Kaitlin Moss, Denver, CO, founder of the blog The Every Hostess. Also take out produce that doesn’t require refrigeration and store in a cool, dry place. As a last resort, move stuff to a cooler with ice.
TIP Stash leftovers like turkey that you would usually put in containers into sealable plastic bags, since they’re easier to squeeze onto crowded fridge shelves. PRESENTED BY

how bad is it?
Straight answers to scratch-your-head questions. NOT BAD AT ALL!
NOT SO BAD!
CLOTHES: GETTY IMAGES; CHAIR COURTESY OF WEST ELM
how bad is it to give up bugging your partner to pick up their stuff and do it yourself? Throw in the (damp) towel and you’ll probably still feel resentful. That could seep into the relationship, says the Rev. Roxy Birchfield, a minister specializing in marriage counseling based in Brooklyn, NY. She recommends the “sandwich” technique, to be tried at a time when you’re not upset. Start with positive points about how your partner keeps the household running: “I appreciate all the stuff you do for us—I mean, I haven’t mowed the lawn in years!” Share your vision for improvement: “I know you’ll never be as neatness-obsessed as I am, but I’m hoping [insert a few key tidy-up requests].” End on a positive: “You’re my fave no matter what, and I know we can figure things out.” No luck? Establish neat and messy zones— say, the bathroom counter stays debris-free, but the vanity drawer will not be mentioned again.

Ohhhh, yeah, I finally painted that hutch, it only took me three months to get around to it! Don’t you think the color looks great, Lulu? Yup, I couldn’t agree more! C’mere, girl, let me rub your ears.
how bad is it to have an actual conversation with your dog? Chats can be good for both pets and their humans. As you articulate thoughts, which may help you process or affirm them, your pooch is enjoying the attention. “Cognitively and emotionally, dogs are similar to toddlers, and even if they don’t always understand the meaning of our words, they have a positive response when we talk in a warm, engaging way,” says Rolan Tripp, D.V.M., founder of the Pet Happiness Network at animalbehavior .net. Research also shows that dogs get most excited when you are excited, so try not to be mopey or go on for so long that your dog walks away, a sign of boredom. Don’t worry that regular chitchat could lead your pet to tune out instructions; dogs are good at differentiating casual conversation from behavioral cues.
NOT BAD AT ALL!
If you’re not sure which variety you have, hold off to ensure that you don’t hurt next season’s blooms, says Ryan McEnaney, the third-generation owner of Bailey Nurseries in St. Paul, MN. For big-leaf hydrangeas, such as the popular Endless Summer, buds are already developing on the branches by fall, and cutting them now could mean fewer flowers later. For any hydrangeas, trimming can expose the insides of the branches to cold temps and do them in. Another good reason to lay off the pruning shears: The dried blooms add texture to the landscape and offer a home to helpful insects, like bees. Basically, you’re doing a good deed by leaving those hydrangeas alone…and saving yourself some fall cleanup.

how bad is it to use a knife that’s dull? Assuming you’d like to make prep easy and avoid maiming yourself, stick with sharpies. “Dull knives don’t really cut, they tear—slicing is more efficient with a sharp blade,” says Bob Scherner, executive chef at the Auguste Escoffier School of Culinary Arts in Boulder, CO. And because you have to apply a lot of pressure to compensate for the dullness, sometimes while hands are wet or oily, there’s a chance the utensil could slip as you slice and…ouch. That honing steel in your drawer isn’t for sharpening— it realigns the edges of the blade. Once in a while, use one of those whetstone blocks or diamond sharpening stones (check out demos online). “Practice with a knife you don’t care about, the one in the back of the drawer,” says Scherner. “And make sure you sharpen the entire blade, not just the center, tip to heel.”

fix your hair color fast
While Dye-I-Y-ing permanent color again can be damaging, especially if your hair is parched from processing or you have naturally fragile strands, there are some safe remedies to try, says Los Angeles colorist Nikki Lee. And they work for semipermanent color, too. For hair that came out dark, avoid DIY color removers, since it’s tricky to gauge what shade yours will end up being. Instead, double-lather with a clarifying shampoo every day for a week to help rinse pigment away. For color that came out light, enrich it using a semipermanent, color-depositing conditioner, like John Frieda’s Brilliant Brunette Visibly Deeper Conditioner, or a deep-conditioning mask, like Garnier Nutrisse Color Reviver 5-Min Color Mask. Put off further attempts at dyeing for at least a month, to give your strands time to recover. Oh, and, rest assured, nobody on your Zoom call is remotely noticing.

A striking way to update trim: Paint it gray. This color is Puritan Gray by Benjamin Moore.
w
hen Meegan and Paul Melgus started house hunting around Lake Michigan, they knew exactly what they wanted: “a steal of a place we could put our stamp on,” says Meegan. That’s just what they found in this 2,000-square-foot 1930s Rolling Prairie, IN, home. “The structure was great and the house had been well cared for by the previous owners, but most of it hadn’t been updated since the ’50s,” says Meegan. The couple zeroed in on everything oldfashioned—dark parquet floors, dated light fixtures, and the not-cool kind of floral from designer Crystal Blackshaw. They bleached the wood floors; painted the walls, trim, and kitchen cabinets; and decorated with fun furniture and wallpaper for a modern-rustic lakeside vibe. “Paul and I like things with some zip and a dose of humor,” says Meegan. Dropping in pops of color and lively patterns brought playfulness—and made a stuck-in-the-past house look newly fabulous.

living room Chic (and easy!) updates included painting the fireplace a dark, rich color (Graphite by Benjamin Moore) and adding a felt pendant by Felted Home Deco on Etsy and armchairs by Ro Sham Beaux. Meegan thinks the sofa, custom by MegMade, is the comfiest spot in the house.

kitchen There was something kinda great about the original black-andwhite linoleum flooring, so the couple replaced it with a modern version: ceramic tile from The Tile Shop laid in a buffalo check pattern. The color they painted the cabinets (Hunter Green by Benjamin Moore) and the vintage orange light were actually chosen to complement Meegan’s cookware: “I’m committed to Le Creuset orange!” she says.

dining room When designer Crystal spotted the huge tree trunk on a desk base at an antiques market in Chicago, she got the idea to turn it into a dining table. Chairs by Anthropologie echo the kitchen floor. The wallpaper, Harlem Toile by Sheila Bridges, is a favorite of Meegan’s. “I’d wanted it for the longest time,” she says.

main bedroom “We carpeted the upstairs bedrooms for warmth in the cold months,” says Meegan. Topping the carpet with a vintage African shag rug adds pattern and plushness. They mixed a light-wood platform bed (from Houzz) and dark-wood nightstands (from West Elm) to keep up the stylishly offbeat look.

Brian searched hard for chairs to go with this vintage table. He stumbled upon the black one (made by Chilton Furniture) at a flea market, only there wasn’t another. “Two different finishes actually look cuter.”
Full-length curtains can make prominent windows look smaller. Relaxed Roman shades play these up.

“It brings yellowy oak or pine into 2020,” Brian says. A mix of ½ cup of bleach and 1 gallon of water was applied using a foam brush, then wiped off with a rag. The top is sealed with matte polyurethane.
12 go all in with old A table made of 150-year-old reclaimedwood planks and a collection of vintage chairs give the space an inviting, laidback look. Brian even stained the table (Dark Walnut by Minwax) to bring out the wood’s imperfections. “I wanted to highlight them!” he says.

make skylights blend in
“The one thing you can’t fake is natural light,” says Brian, and skylights by Velux in this cathedral-ceiling room bring lots of it. “We chose remote-controlled blue shades almost identical to the color on the wall to create a seamless look when closed.”

efore they moved into their 1894 Glen Ridge, NJ, home several years ago, the Blank family had put up with a kitchen so small it barely qualified as a room. “Only two of us could ever be in there at once,” says Megan, “usually Ryan doing the cooking, and me following him and clearing away the mess!” When they redid the kitchen in their new place, they were after roominess and functionality, though they didn’t want a space that took itself too seriously. Working with designer Diana Weinstein, the couple snagged about 100 square feet from a laundry room that got kicked upstairs. They put in a ginormous island and two sinks—one for prep, the other for cleaning—then amped things up with a cornflower blue (Blue Heron by Benjamin Moore) on the cabinets and a very awesome floor. Ryan got elbow room galore for making his homemade pizzas… and everyone can dig in at once. 88 HGTV Magazine
