Weekend Experience & Events GIN AND TONIC

DRINK RECIPE OF THE WEEK

A

part from the heavily contested Martini, few drinks are as simple but as foughtover as the gin and tonic. The English staple is utter perfection when done right. And yet, it seems that no two bartenders or punters can agree on how to make the perfect gin and tonic.

How much ice should you use? What's the best gin-to-tonic ratio? For a garnish, is lemon or lime better? Which glass is best to serve it in? After several deliberations, the procedure for preparing the perfect Gin and tonic is given below. Ingredients 50ml Sip smith London Dry gin, Fever Tree Indian Tonic is the best, Lemon twist or wedge of lime and a Highball Glass. Procedure Fill a thin-rimmed highball glass up to the top with very cold ice cubes (a pre-chilled glass is even more ideal), pour in a double measure - 50ml - of Sip Smith London Dry gin, top off with tonic water to taste. Garnish with a wedge of fresh lime or a lemon twist: make sure all of the pith of the citrus has been removed, and run quickly along the lip of the glass before garnishing, or with a simple wedge of lime. Sipping perfection.

WANYAMBO FESTIVAL

T

he Wanyambo Festival is an annual festival held in Dar es Salaam, to celebrate traditional dance, music, food, art and culture of the Wanyambo people. The first edition of the festival was held in 2011 in Dar es Salaam, at the Makumbusho Village Museum.

The Wanyambo Festival is one of the best opportunities to check out the local culture of Tanzania in early January. If you are deeply interested in learning the true culture of Tanzania, this is a festival you should consider attending.

OFFICE BIRTHDAY IDEAS

C

elebrating an employee's birthday or work anniversary is one of the simplest (and most easily overlooked) ways you can show the individuals on your team how valued they are. While there's no need to throw a party or disrupt the entire work day, a few creative gestures go a long way. Don't let being busy get in the way of making everyone on the team feel special at least once a year. Below are easy and inexpensive ideas can be used. 1.Decorate with more than just balloons 2.Get a Birthday Cake with drinks and snacks. 3.Ice cream bar 4.Karaoke break 5.Photo booth 6.Get out of the office 7.Get a large card and sign it 8.Have Their Friend Organize an Event 9.Make It a Spectacle 10.Give Handmade, Personal Gifts From Etsy 11.Create a Birthday Desk Explosion 12.Give Notes of Gratitude 13.Give Them the Day Off to Enjoy It 14.Write an Employee Spotlight 15.Sponsor an Event on Their Behalf

The Wanyambo Festival starts in Dar es Salaam on Saturday, ahead of the Makumbusho Jamboree. Aside from the visitors from upcountry, more hundreds from Dar es Salaam and parts of the country take part in this festival to showcase the culture and craft of Wanyambo.

SESAME SEEDS

How To Hold Your Spoon

L

Sesame seeds may be tiny, but they have huge health benefits. They were worth their weight in gold during the Middle Ages, and for many good reasons. The more I learn about this precious seed, the more I want to share it with other people. I’m an enthusiastic eater of all sorts of seeds, but sesame seeds in the form of tahini and sesame oil are favorite ingredients of mine.

ast week, I introduces a broad topic called Table Etiquette. We begin with how you should hold you’re a spoon. Spoons are held in the right hand and are used to scoop liquid or even semi-solid foods like ice cream, soups, broth, etc.

considered bad manners to lick the spoon or the fork once you are done with your meals. Since the spoons and the forks are all made up of steel, there is a chance of making an irritating noise that might annoy the people around you. You can avoid this by eating gently and slowly.

Do not make slurping noises while sipping from a spoon and always ensure that you sip from the side of the spoon rather than the tip. It is considered bad table etiquette to hold the spoon using your fist.

Take your time to enjoy your meal and you can avoid such issues. ever use your fingers to push food onto a fork rather, use a fork or a spoon to do so. Do not drop food from the fork onto the plate while eating.

And just like it is with forks, do not point towards people using spoons. The spoon, in certain cuisines, can also be used to push the food onto the fork or vice versa. It is also

Put the spoon with its end at 6 o'clock to indicate to the waiter that you have finished. Practice they say makes perfect. Put in a conscious effort and it will be part of you.

Mate 8 by Huawei in Tanzania

T

he new mobile phone was unveiled at Studio Blu in Fourways, Johannesburg last week. The Mate 8 represents the pinnacle of style, innovation and ground-breaking technology that introduces a new style of business.

comes amid pressure over Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA)’s plan to effect a nationwide switch-off scores of counterfeit phones from the networks by employing the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI), number, the unique number assigned to individual mobile phones.

The Mate 8 has set a new standard in style that transcends its beautifully crafted exterior to deliver a mobile companion that meets the needs of today’s alwaysconnected and sharing user. Huawei always looks at what consumers want and promises to issue a unique offer to all of them. The launch of a new product

In the newly launched gadget, security is enhanced, according to the company, even further with the in-built, realtime encryption/decryption that provides protection of all information, while the microSD card lock feature prevents unauthorized access to information stored on this storage device.

Vegetable Growing in Arusha & Greenhouse Technology in Zanzibar The tech offered include greenhouse, drip-irrigation and using solar energy for water pumping. The now flourishing horticulture industry in Zanzibar has helped the Isles to reduce its annual importation of vegetable and fruits from the previous 80 per cent figure down to around 50 per cent in the period of five years since the alternative farming was introduced there.

T

he Arusha-based Tanzania Horticulture Association (TAHA) has succeeded in introducing, promoting and firmly establishing the vegetable and fruit growing sector in Zanzibar, formerly known for cloves production only. From Arusha and across the sea into Zanzibar, horticulture farmers there now grow tomatoes, all types of pepper, okra, eggplants and watermelons. A recent visit to the farms revealed that many growers were busy at work and said they were investing in heat and humidity enduring crops and apparently they seem to be paying back well. Page

For the 'indoor' farming using greenhouse technology, Zanzibar has managed to introduce the concept to six farmers, but each of them own between two and three greenhouses making the Isles to have nearly 15 greenhouses so far.

Tanzania and Japan Sign a TSh166 Billion Agreement Tanzania signed a Sh116 billion agreement with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to finance Business Environment for the Jobs Development Policy Operation project. The project is co-financed by the World Bank (WB) which has already signed a $8 million deal with the Tanzania. The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance and Planning, Dr Servacius Likwelile, and JICA's Chief Representative in Tanzania, Mr Toshio Nagase said Japan through JICA- is committed to helping the country build a better business and investment environment as well as in accelerating efforts to become an industrialised middle income country as envisaged in Vision 2025. Japan and JICA are here to help the economy grow and they hope Tanzania will continue to be peaceful so that they could continue offering our support. The project involves a series of Development policies reforms which will remove critical business environment constraints in Tanzania especially in key jobcreating industries and sectors.

Much of the coastal ring of Zanzibar comprises hard ground, but with plenty of water and according to agricultural expert, they had to define special horticultural crops that can thrive in these areas, something which attracted many youth who liked farming but did not like to venture further inland.

STRATEGIES FOR SHOPPING SMARTER

I

enjoy shopping in my off-duty life. But with my new career, my new shopping philosophy is to focus on quality staples like chic trousers and shift dresses that withstand the test of time and wear, and serve as building blocks to endless outfits. But regardless of what I'm buying, I employ a few strategies to make sure I'm making smart choices both for my wardrobe and my wallet. 1.Try on Multiple sizes. Don't write something off just because you only see mediums hanging and you're a small 2.Make friends with the sales people. Sure, it's true that a salesperson's job is to make a sale, but forming a genuine connection with someone who works at one of your favorite or oft-frequented stores is hugely helpful.

4.Know what you really need.

3.Know what you already have. Keeping a welledited and organized closet is key for smart shopping - and not making duplicative purchases.

5.Know yourself. Last but not least, it's important to be realistic and honest about the person you are. Have fun shopping!

SKIN TREATMENT – Week 3

ROUGH ELBOWS

If your elbows, knees or heels are rough and cracked, there are several different products already in your home that you can use to help heal the skin. Slathering the problem area with Vaseline, wrapping it in plastic wrap and leaving it on overnight works wonderfully. If this sounds a little too messy for you, don’t worry, you can scale it down a bit. What you need: Quarter cup of Brown Sugar, one eight cup of Olive Oil and Chapstick.

What to do: First, you will need to mix the brown sugar and olive oil together to form a paste. Scrub the affected region with the paste to remove the dead skin. Then apply chapstick to the skin. Yes, chapstick. It works on dry, cracked lips and it works on the rest of your body too.

TANZANIA CULTURAL EXPERIENCES

I

t’s not hard to see why Tanzania is famous for its stunning natural beauty. The country is home to the African continent’s largest and most magnificent mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro, and the highest concentration of predators. Every year, visitors witness the migration of millions of zebras and wildebeest across the stunning Serengeti Plains. There is the beautiful Ngorongoro Crater to explore in the North, the stunning white sand beaches on the island of Zanzibar, amazing African safaris to experience and more. Tanzania is also a country rich in local history and culture. With around 50 million living in Tanzania, there’s a great chance to interact with a variety of people with different backgrounds, traditions and religions. This article explores some of the best cultural experiences to have while exploring Tanzania!

GIFTS AND SOUVENIRS

1. Head To The Ngorongoro Crater Highland Region To Meet The Maasai 2. Explore The Historical Kilwa Ruins 3. Attend The Colorful Wanyambo Festival 4. Celebrate Mwaka Kogwa, The Shirazi New Year, At Makunduchi Village 5. Get Lost On The Narrow Alleys Of Stone Town 6. Meet The Hadzabe Around Lake Eyasi

THE AFTER TRAVEL ENJOYMENTS If you are a traveler, there are some basic things that put a smile on your face upon return. Some of them are: 1.Your bed. There’s no other bed in the world just like it. 2.Your own pillows. This goes hand in hand with the above point.

P

eople love receiving gifts from family and friends who have traveled to faraway places, so make sure that you know how to buy gifts and souvenirs for others when traveling abroad so that you can surprise them with items that they will like. You will have to take a number of things into account, but purchasing a gift can be a fun adventure that will leave a lasting memory. Purchase a gift that is native to or specific to the country in which you are traveling. Think about more touristy gifts like shot glasses or snow globes, both of which can be fun collector items. Purchase items that clearly show where they are from.

12

ISSUE no 180 Conversation begins here

Make sure the gift will not break before you can give it to the recipient. Choose gifts based on either durability or the shop's ability to wrap it up well enough to get it home. Be reasonable as far as what you think you can carry for the rest of the day that you purchase it. And remember you'll have to lug it along in your carry-on at the airport. Think about jewelry that is native to the country in which you're traveling. Jewelry can be worn daily or on special occasions, but it will always remind the recipient of you. Make sure that you are following all national and international rules regarding any food purchases that you plan to bring or ship home. Ensure that your gift is age-appropriate to its recipient.

3.Being able to flush your toilet roll. Pretty self-explanatory. 4.Drinking your usual water. 5.Being surrounded by family and friends. There’s nothing quite like coming home and catching up with your family and friends after a trip. 6.Seeing your pets again. 7.Having access to all of your clothes to choose from. 8.Eating normal food. 9.Familiarity. It’s not a feeling that could ever be put into words, but there’s just something about being home that feels comfortable, normal and, well, like home.
