The Work Christmas Party By Susan. M. Heathfield

T

he festive season is well and truly underway. Christmas is a time to be merry, in keeping with the season, this article looks at the blunders made at work Christmas parties. The office party during the holidays or any other time of the year is a key professional opportunity to mingle casually with coworkers, impress bosses, and get to know people you don’t see every day. Unfortunately, the office party is also a prime opportunity to ruin your professional reputation, alienate coworkers, and fail to capitalize on networking opportunities. These are common office party blunders. Heed them. Some are missed opportunities, but some may cost you your career. Drink Too Much at the Office Party Drinking too much at the office party is the most egregious offense. It’s not just the drinking, though anything excessive is inappropriate at an office party, but the actions that result from over imbibing. With normal inhibition affected, drunken office party attendees have been known to make passes at coworkers, harass partners on the dance floor, and touch

coworkers in inappropriate and unwanted ways. If you drink too much at the office party, make amends by apologizing to anyone you may have offended. Don’t ignore your behavior and hope people didn’t notice or that coworkers will have short memories. They did and they won’t. Your behavior will be that talk of the office until something more interesting happens. At best, coworkers will accept your apology and life moves on. At worst, you are charged in a sexual harassment complaint. Want to go there? I think not. Dress Suggestively at the Office Party Errors in clothing selection for the office party affect coworkers’ opinion of your judgment, credibility and competence. No matter how festive, the office party is a business occasion; professional, not sexy or suggestive, attire should rule the night. Does this mean you can’t dress up in your favorite party dress or pant suit? Not at all. Just use tasteful discretion in your selection of attire for your office party. Fail to Attend the Office Party Without a Good Reason Your company schedules an office party to reward and recognize employees, to

provide an opportunity for team building among coworkers, and to promote coworkers getting to know each other informally. I have heard every possible reason why people don’t attend their office party. The most common reasons involve the office party infringing on their personal family time; a dislike of smalltalk and social events, in general; and a genuine family or personal event scheduled at the same time. Cooperation with your organization’s mission in paying for the office party signals your commitment to the company and your understanding of the goals of the office party. A couple of hours a year is barely worth a complaint. Let the boss know when a personal commitment precludes your attendance. Flirt With Coworkers or Their Significant Others at the Office Party Flirting, especially mixed with alcohol, is unwanted at a business event. It is unwelcome, unexpected, and usually unwanted. Flirting that involves touching can result in a sexual harassment complaint in a worst case scenario. At best, it annoys coworkers at an event that is supposed to draw people together and create a stronger team.

Christmas dinner hacks to save you time in the kitchen

S

tay focused on having fun this Christmas with these seriously helpful food hacks.

Chill drinks quickly

Chill your drinks quickly by wrapping the bottles in damp paper towels and popping in the freezer for 10 minutes. Use a timer so you don’t forget to take it out - if left in there, the bottles could crack.Discover another clever hack for chilling drinks fast

Warm plates in the dishwasher

Check your dishwasher for a platewarming setting, and save your oven for the food. When you’re catering for lots of people, using the dishwasher’s rinse cycle to wash all your veg at once is another smart move. Find out more nifty dishwasher tricks

Stop pans boiling over

With so many pots and pans to worry about, it’s easy to let one of them boil over. Easily prevent it by placing a wooden spoon across the top of each pan.

Cook the turkey evenly

Turkey breasts cook faster than the rest of the bird and can easily become dry. Prevent them from overcooking by placing a zip lock bag of ice cubes onto the breasts for 30 minutes, then coat the whole bird with vegetable oil and cover tightly with foil before roasting in the oven.

Pre-cook the veg

feast is nearly ready. You can par-boil the potatoes the day before too, ready to roast in the oven once the turkey has finished cooking.

Keep drains fat free

Make a basic cup shape from foil and pour your fat into that instead of down the drain to avoid blocking it. When the fat has hardened, just chuck it in the bin.

Serve ice cream easily

Your ice cream will be easier to scoop if you store it in a zip lock bag in the freezer, which stops the frozen dessert from getting too hard.

Cook your carrots, parsnips and Brussels sprouts ahead of time. Just panfry to re-heat when your Christmas

HOLIDAY HEALTH TIPS By Dr. Nirav Shah - Internal Medicine Physician Sali Internal Hospital

Keep the focus on fun, not food Most holidays are associated with certain foods. Christmas at your house might not be the same without your aunt's green been casserole, but that doesn't mean food has to be the main focus. Instead, throw yourself into the other rituals a holiday brings, whether it's caroling or tree trimming. Modify your eating times so that they jive with your relatives'. Do your in-laws' meal schedules fly in the face of yours? Here's how to compromise: Say they wake up later than you do and serve a late breakfast at 10:30. Then they skip lunch and serve Christmas 'dinner' at 3 p.m. To keep your blood sugar steady without overdoing it on calories, have an early-morning snack (such as a piece of whole-grain toast) before your relatives rise and shine. Their late breakfast will count as your 'real' breakfast, plus some of your lunch. Enjoy the 3 p.m. meal - but don't overdo it! - and have a small snack at around 8 p.m. Cut down your own Christmas tree. Rather than buying a tree from a roadside lot where the trees have been drying out for weeks, visit a tree farm that allows you to cut your own. It will be fresher and probably

less expensive than they are at the lot. You'll burn off calories and combat some of the blood-sugar effects of the sugar cookie you snuck by traipsing around the grounds in search of just the right tree. And your family will have one more fond holiday memory to look back on. Indulge in only the most special holiday treats. Skip the store-bought cookies at Christmas, but do save some calories in your 'budget' to sample treats that are homemade and special to your family, such as your wife's special Yule log cake. Training yourself what to indulge in and what to skip is much like budgeting your mad money: Do you want to blow it on garbage that you can buy anywhere or on a very special, one-of-a-kind souvenir? Just don't completely deprive yourself on festive days - your willpower will eventually snap, and you'll end up overeating. Stock the freezer with healthy meals. Everyone's overly busy during the holidays, and most of us want to spend our time shopping, decorating, or seeing friends and family, which leaves less time to cook healthy meals. Take defensive action several weeks ahead of time by cooking

meals intended specifically for the freezer. You'll be thankful later when you can pop one of the meals into the oven or microwave and turn your attention instead to writing out holiday cards with a personal message in each. Pour the gravy and sauces lightly. You may not be able to control what's being served at a holiday meal, but you can make the turkey, roast beef, and even mashed potatoes and stuffing much healthier by foregoing the sauce or gravy or spooning on just a small amount. Toast the new year with just one glass of bubbly. You may be celebrating, but that doesn't mean that that you should send your meal plan (and your judgment) on holiday. Alcohol can interfere with your blood sugar by slowing the release of glucose into the bloodstream; it also contain a lot of calories - 89 calories per glass of white wine or champagne, 55 calories in a shot of vodka, and 170 calories in a pint of stout beer. What's more, alcohol breaks down your inhibitions and judgment, which makes you that much less likely to resist the junk foods that you would otherwise be able to pass up.
