Exclusive Interview
with Alexa Nisenson
Q: You were very young when Fear the Walking Dead premiered a few years ago, so had you seen the show at all before you started the audition process? A: I was so young! I was eleven when I joined the show. I actually hadn’t watched the show before I was cast. Of course I knew about show and the universe overall, but when I joined the show I went back and watched the first three seasons so I could get an idea of what had already happened! It’s such a cool process to join a show already in progress but it’s also a little intimidating so I wanted to feel really prepared! Q: What made you want to go out for Charlie? What attracted you to the role? A: It’s funny because when you are auditioning at the age of eleven, you are just so grateful to get the chance to audition and be seen. I remember just wanting to be given any opportunity to grow as an actress and get experience. I don’t think there were many auditions that got sent to me I didn’t do at that age. But there was definitely something about this audition that felt different. The material was just super exciting and at the time I didn’t even know much about Charlie and what her journey would be, but I definitely remember wanting to be part of it. I knew from the start this character at least was someone who would be really multi dimensional and as an actress at any age that’s a dream come true. Q: Before Fear the Walking Dead, you starred in Fist Fight and Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life. What was it like transitioning from comedy to a post-apocalyptic horror drama? How did you prepare? A: Yes! I was so lucky to be coming off two amazing comedic feature films. I can’t even describe how amazing my experiences were on those two films! Before doing those, I had joined the tv show Constantine on NBC which was actually my first acting job so when I joined Fear. I was so excited to get to explore that kinda vibe again! Believe it or not, I actually settle into dramatic roles a lot easier than comedic. I actually think comedy, for me is slightly more challenging but equally as rewarding and amazing. So stepping onto the set of Fear I was kind of like...yes! I’m home. Q: “Close Your Eyes” is a breakout episode for your character and you as an actress. Did you sense the magnitude of that episode while filming? What has it meant for both you and your character? A: Wow. Thank you so much. I feel really blessed to have been given that gift. I understood the magnitude of it the first time even reading through the script. I can remember just not being able to put the script down and sat for probably an hour after reading it for the first time. Just processing it all it was so powerful. The filming process was just as amazing. There was one day - the day we filmed the epic basement scene where we were freezing cold. We were In three layers of clothing between our wetsuits and real clothes, submerged in water for hours and doing stunts. Of course on top of all that...crying through multiple takes of the scene and It was by far one of the best days of my life. I knew that day that what we were creating was so special. Those are the day’s you just know you are doing what you are meant to be doing! Q: When you look back at this last season, what has been the biggest lesson you’ve learned being a part of this show and cast? A: Patience. In so many ways. Both as an actress and as a human being. I never really knew how much practicing patience would play a part in life in all ways! From a business mind set, we have the most incredible team of show runners and producers and writers. They have done an amazing job telling these stories that build up to where we are now in the

story. But with that, I have learned to be patient. While we are filming you want to just hurry and know what the ending will be and what the future holds. You just want to rush through it so you can know the outcome but I have learned to trust the process entirely and be patient. You enjoy the actual day to day journey way more. On a personal level, I have learned that being patient and waiting for something or an experience that you know will be life changing is so worth it. And with that, I’ve learned to put my total faith into the people and things that put faith in me and that has made the all my experiences even better. Q: What are your plans for the future? A: I dream of being able to continue my journey for as long as the industry will have me. I dream big!! I want to continue to work and grow and be part of amazing projects. I want to write, direct and produce one day. There have been so many actresses that are paving the way right now for girls like me and they are doing it all and kicking ass like Olivia Wilde. She’s killing the game right now. I want to get into fashion designing one day and possibly creating a make up line! I want to make a difference in this world! I want to be involved in causes that mean the world to me and hopefully do what I can to make this world a kinder and better place. I want to pave the way for young girls to do the same! I just want to continue to create and inspire. If I can do that, I’ll be happy. Q: Who are the actors or directors you would like to work with? A: I have a list!! My manager once asked me that and I made an actual list. Kind of a vision board project you could say. There are so many! Too many to list all of them but if I had to pick a handful right in this moment I’d say: Scarlett Johansson, Emma Stone, Tom Hanks, Leonardo DiCaprio, Martin Scorsese, Justin Baldoni to name a few. I could go on and on!! There are so many incredible artists in this industry who inspire me every day. I have already worked with some directors that I dream of working with again as well. Richie Keen who directed Fist Fight and Steve Carr who directed Middle School will forever be on my wish list. SPEED ROUND: Q: Guilty pleasure movie? A: How To Lose A Guy In Ten Days! I can recite the entire movie. Q: Favorite play or musical? A: Musical - Waitress. Q: Favorite book? A: Literally anything by James Patterson! He’s an icon. Q: A band or artist that fans would be surprised to learn is on your playlist? A: Obsessed with Blackbear right now! But that’s probably not surprising. I’ll say, Bon Jovi. Definitely getting into 80’s rock a lot lately. Q: Hidden talent? A: Baking!! I make a killer buttercream frosting!
