With its aggressive screening action, the Portafill International MR-5 is a powerful reclaiming screen that can easily go from a three-way split to a two-split depending on the site and job requirements. Tricon Equipment territory manager for Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania, Paul Knauer, explains what makes this mobile machine one of the best scalping screens in the market today

Winged warrior
Northern Ireland-based Portafill International is a global leader in producing quality equipment, including reclaimer screens, finishing screens, crushers and conveyers for applications across construction, demolition, topsoil, sand, gravel and recycling. It specialises in manufacturing a range of robust and reliable scalper screens that are known for their compact size, ease of transport, and excellent performance.
One of its most successful and best-selling reclaiming screens is the MR-5. Like other Portafill International products in this category, the iconic orange MR-5 offers exceptional design and value, with a capacity to handle the toughest jobs.
Paul Knauer, territory manager for Australian distributor Tricon Equipment, says there are a few simple reasons the MR-5 is one of Portafill International’s bestselling screens.
“Its easy clean-out capability, its

highly aggressive screen action for improved performance in difficult materials and its folding wing conveyors for ease of transport,” says Knauer.
“The MR-5 has a large hopper side for its category, which reduces feeding machine movement to increase output. Its 2-in-1 oversize product conveyor is perfectly suited for optionally mixing oversize and midsize products. It also offers low fuel consumption for low cost of ownership, which is another huge advantage of this scalper.”
The MR-5 is a workhorse machine designed for heavy duty screening applications, offering high performance and excellent reliability.
Designed for versatile screening in a portable and compact package that allows easy movement, the MR-5 can be self-propelled on site and, with its hydraulic adjustable conveyors and hopper walls, it quickly folds down for transport.
With its 2.5m height, 2.2m width and 10.6m length, the MR-5 is small enough to fit inside a container, making it less expensive to transport. It is strong enough to withstand the toughest and most abrasive materials thanks to its heavy duty steel construction.
From sorting rock and concrete through to recycling and topsoil tasks, this screener is well suited for a range of applications, including construction, demolition, waste recycling, asbestos remediation, sand and quarries.
The MR-5 is powered by a Deutz D2011 L04i (EPA Tier 3) 36kW (48 horsepower) engine and despite its compact size (approximately 14,000kg) it can handle up to 180 tonnes of material per hour.
The hydraulics do not overpower the machine so the economical engine can do the job, with the MR-5 making two quality finished sizes all day on roughly 55 litres of fuel.
Knauer adds that its 2-in-1 oversize product conveyor for mixing oversize and midsize product also attracts buyers.
“The 2-in-1 system can capture top and bottom deck on an oversize conveyor and with hydraulics go to a three-way split,” he says.
“Operators can mix both the midsize and oversize fraction together for a two-way split, increasing efficiency when needed for jobs that do not require three splits.
The MR-5 is ideal for small compact facilities or sites and, with a 20minute setup time, operators can start screening without much delay.”
The machine features a bolted twodeck and two-bearing screen for high vibration that enables maximum screening ability and fast product separation.
“So you have an integrated screen [and] changed capacity to output and productivity depending on the customer’s needs. Another benefit of this screen is its price point. It offers more economical upfront capital cost and a better value for money,” says Knauer.
The hydraulic hopper sides can be folded and unfolded for added room or direct feed from another machine, depending on the site requirements and what the customers wish to achieve.

More than 3,000 people attended the Civil Construction Field Days (CCFD) in Brisbane in mid-May.
Held over three days in conjunction with the Brisbane Truck Show, visitors could catch a free bus between that show and the CCFD.
Visitors to CCFD had the choice of about 55 industry exhibitors at the riverside Hamilton Northshore, with many manufacturers and distributors using this opportunity to showcase new equipment.
Some of the highlights included:
Manitou 1650RT track loader
Manitou’s midsize track loader has a lifting height of 3,038mm, operating weight of 3,638kg and is powered by a 69.3hp (51.7kW) Yanmar engine.
The company says the 1650RT’s performance is helped by its excellent forward reach at the middle of the lift path.
An adapted skid loader chassis and hydrostatic transmission help with performance in various material handling situations. An AllTach feature mounts compatible attachments electronically by using a joystick, making it easy to alternate between a user’s requirements.
Oz Excavator Buckets
The Queensland-based distributor and manufacturer showed off one of its new concept-built buckets.
The 1,540mm bucket has a removable hungry board to optimise cleanups and bulk loading and comes standard with attached bolt-on edges.
Oz Excavator Buckets can purposebuild buckets for individual machine requirements and works directly with a variety of dealerships across a variety of specifications and has all the data required to build a bucket for any particular machine.
Allquip water truck
A 14,000-litre polyethylene water tank on a custom-built truck from NSW-based manufacturer and national distributor Allquip sat proudly on display.
Ideal for civil construction or mine sites, this tank has a hydraulic drive water pump and heavy-duty cast iron transfer pump capable of supplying about 2,100 litres per minute.
Under-cab front sprays, two fullyadjustable high mounted and three mid mounted rear sprays, 80mm galvanised steel pipework, retractable hose reel with 20m industrial wash down hose and industrial-grade water cannon all feature on this truck.
A 100mm suction system, in-cabin pump speed controller and LED work lights for night operation round off this feature-packed truck.
KOR hydro excavation unit
The Cap Combi 2600 CC 6x4 hydro excavation truck from KOR (Keep Operations Running) has been designed for the Australian market.
Ideal for all hydro excavation jobs,
