Australia did not have a PPE manufacturer before the COVID-19 crisis. And the expectation was that Australia would not be able to make more than about 37 million surgical masks a year. We’re now expecting to produce more than 200 million this year. In fact, more than 640 businesses responded to the Request for Information on capacity to produce or assist in the production of PPE. At the National Press Club, the Hon Karen Andrews MP, Minister for Industry, Science and Technology said what was needed was a change in the culture of how we think about our capability, about how we challenge the status quo.
