KEITH Introduces long-lasting, versatile J-MAX Floor
TRAILERS EQUIPPED WITH KEITH WALKING FLOOR SYSTEMS OFFER SEVERAL ADVANTAGES IN THE WASTE ENVIRONMENT, INCLUDING FAST UNLOADING AND THE ABILITY TO UNLOAD WITHOUT THE ASSISTANCE OF A TIPPING SYSTEM.
A series of hydraulically driven floor slats horizontally ‘walk’ material out the rear of the trailer, eliminating the need for a tipping platform. The new J-MAX steel floor system is designed for longer wear when unloading abrasive material such as municipal solid waste, light demolition, construction debris, mulch, glass and salt. “A key benefit of the J-MAX floor is the product diversity that operators can unload,” says Zyggy Reinoga of KEITH WALKING FLOOR Australia. “The ability to back haul can double the efficiency of your trailer, so a floor slat that handles a variety of materials is a big plus.” Constructed of roll formed high strength steel, the J-MAX floor system has a longer slat life than standard aluminium flooring. The unique ‘J’-shaped seal reduces material from sifting through the floor, making it a good choice for hauling sand, gravel and wood waste. Reinoga acknowledges that the waste industry is tough on equipment. This makes the J-MAX floor an ideal choice for outfitting transfer trailers. “When you have a trailer that is reloaded six to eight times per day, you need a floor able to withstand the wear and tear.” In addition to the J-MAX floor, KEITH offers a variety of slat profiles for the waste industry, including aluminium IMPACT designs and the rugged V-FLOOR system. Factors such as material abrasion, how the trailer will be loaded and if the trailer needs to support forklift traffic should be considered when choosing a flooring type. “Operators need to match the flooring with the material,” adds Reinoga. KEITH Manufacturing Co. is no stranger to the waste and recycling industry. The waste industry starting using WALKING FLOOR technology in the early 1980s when KEITH
developed a system that could unload a 13.7 meter trailer in three minutes. Twenty years later, company founder Keith Foster was inducted into the Environmental Industry Association (EIA) Hall of Fame for making the unloading of solid waste easier, safer and more efficient. Today, KEITH continues to innovate by offering material handling solutions that boost productivity and the bottom line. “We are very familiar with the challenges faced by waste professionals and design our products not only for durability, but dependability as well,” says Reinoga. Reaping payload benefits with a Barker trailer
A NEW 45’ MOVING FLOOR TRAILER IS DELIVERING OPERATIONAL UPTIME, COST SAVINGS AND SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS FOR NORTH WEST RECYCLING’S ORGANIC COMPOST AND GREEN WASTE HAULAGE.
David Murphy, director and CEO of North West Recycling, has been buying truck and trailers for over 20 years. From chassis tipper to tip over axles and float trailers, David has used a variety of trailer builds for his business, but it was a recent purchase that has proved to be a gamechanger for his operations – a moving floor chip bin trailer built by Barker Trailers. The 45’ wedge moving floor trailer is a first of its kind for David’s team. Sydney-based North West Recycling offers a comprehensive green waste management system for all industries and includes services such as collection, recycling and turning green waste material in high quality organic products. The business also operates North West Recycling Centre, an Environment Protection Authority (EPA) approved green waste facility that collects natural untreated green waste then recycles it, then the waste turns into a multi-purpose compost, mulch and or soil conditioner. Its collection facility is not only used as a disposal depot to collect green waste, but also open to businesses and householders alike and collects large stockpiles of green waste material in 15 or 25 cubic metre bins from Sydney metropolitan region. With such application demands, the business depends on vehicles that offer high capacity and safe movement. “We move volume and not so much weight as our products are very light, so moving 100 cubic metres at a time in a safe manner is very important to us,” David says. “We used to operate trucks and trailers and over the years there have been some vehicle rollovers. Using the new moving floor trailer is a very fast and efficient way of doing
things compared to tipping trailers.” The moving floor is ideal for this application with its ability to unload on any surface and its compliance to new safety requirements for non-tipping application. “The Barker’s walking floor system is stateof-the-art. It is very fast and efficient, and the quality of the build is outstanding,” David says. “The trailer is easy and simple to operate. We use it every day and it has become a vital part of our business of moving our product around. We went from moving 40-50 cubic metres at a time for our clients from now being able to move 100 cubic metres at a time with the new trailer, which has saved us double-handling so we’re saving time and money there. It is a competitive market, so it has kept us on top of our game.” Barker Trailers is a leading manufacturer of moving floor trailers in Australia and New Zealand since 1995. Since then, the tried and trusted company has crafted close to 1,000 purpose-built moving floor trailers for a variety of industries and applications including waste, wood chip, mulch, paper, manure, compost and grain. For over 25 years, Barker Trailer has regularly launched new products at the Brisbane Truck Show, with the moving floor trailers nearly always making an appearance at the event. In the recent years innovations around safety and durability have been a focus and for the 2023 iteration of the Brisbane Truck Show, the team at Barker Trailer is planning to launch a product to allow expansion into other markets segments. “The last few years we have seen the emergence of recycled organics as a product in high demand,” the team at Barker Trailers says. “We are proud to continue our association with the waste sector as a member of the Australian Organic Recyclers Association and were delighted to display at the AORA conference in the Hunter Valley.” In fact, it was the very same trailer that Dave ended up buying, which was displayed at the 2021 Brisbane Truck Show and AORA 2021. “It was a very well-presented trailer and had the exact features that I was after,” Dave says. “More importantly, it was available for immediate delivery. The customer service has been great. Barker’s NSW Sales Manager, Matt Watson, has been outstanding to deal with as has the aftersales service.” Barker’s engineering team has been instrumental in managing the design, build and Performance-Based Standards (PBS) applications to enable customers far greater versatility in design to increase payload capacity, gain competitive advantage in the market and importantly reducing running costs.
