August 8 – 10, 2013
A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM THE PREMIER On behalf of the Government of Ontario, I am delighted to extend warm greetings to everyone attending the Annual International Leadership Convention, Career Fair and Diversity Expo of the North American Association of Asian Professionals (NAAAP). I offer a special welcome to all the participants who have made the journey to Toronto — our province’s vibrant capital — to take part in this event. Ontario is proud to be home to a large and dynamic Asian Canadian community — a community that has contributed immensely to the social, cultural and economic life of our province. Within the context of this much-anticipated convention, I would like to acknowledge Canadians of Asian heritage for strengthening our society through their professional achievements and leadership. I commend NAAAP for giving both the global Asian community and Asian Canadians the opportunity to further hone leadership skills, discuss workplace diversity and propose strategies for career advancement. This convention also celebrates leadership excellence through the NAAAP 100 Recognition Program — and I would like to congratulate all those who are being honoured this year. Please accept my best wishes for a productive and memorable convention.

Count on it. Life has no guarantees, but in business, I knew exactly what I wanted. A company that gave me the start-up help I needed, freedom to make my own decisions … plus the chance to earn a great living. With so many unknowns in life, my career isn’t one of them. I can count on that.

Marco Mo, Founder & CEO of Archerfish Sales
Although we all love to talk about big, once-in-a-lifetime deals, many companies rely on high volume, lower dollar run-rate deals to cover costs while they work on the bigger deals to grow their business. Whether you’re a one-person company or a 300 person SMB, knowing that you have a reliable daily rate of new business is the difference between having the time to plan for expansion or scrambling to make ends meet. Learn how to create a front-line sales force that concentrates on lower value, high volume business while senior sales people and company leaders focus on high value opportunities. Marco started his career as a trader rep at RBC. After 9/11, he joined Sony to be their national accounts trainer. He won an award and was recruited by LG to manage their marketing program. When his son was born, he left corporate to set the example for his son that it’s far better to create jobs than to apply for them. Today, Archerfish Sales uses an assembly–line approach to business development to help companies set up sales teams and crush quotas.

The Business of Body Language: Effective Communication for Women 10:15 am - 11:30 am sheraton hall a/b
Effective communication is integral to leadership and success in the business world. According to various researchers, body language is thought to account for 50-70% of all communication. With so much focus on the mental aspects of business, it’s easy to overlook your most effective tool for communication – your body. What does your body language say about you? In this workshop specially geared towards women, participants will learn about different postures and explore the messages they convey. They will identify their primary posture, explore somatic awareness as a resource and develop effective communication through body-mind integration. Participants will learn to express more fully, meet their bodies from the inside out and connect what they say with how they say it. What is EQ and Why You Should Care 10:15 am - 11:30 am sheraton Hall C
Many of us believe that sheer intellect and being smart is what will move us ahead in business. Then there is a rude awakening when we discover that while we may be the smartest person on the team yet for some reason we’re also the one passed up for promotion. What we don’t know about is that research done as far back as the early 1900’s indicate that emotional intelligence (EQ) is a very important part of one’s success. Potentially up to 90% of your success may be attributed to your EQ alone! This seminar will discuss the EQ model of competencies and skills that make you an effective leader. What is Success? 2:00 pm - 3:15 Pm sheraton Hall C
Success. Is it about making more money? Is it about becoming more famous? We believe that true success has nothing to do with these things. Rather, real success is rooted in making a positive difference in the lives of those around us. In this workshop, we will talk about 3 types of leadership that drive success: 1)Inward Leadership 2)Outward Leadership 3)Forward Leadership. Participants will be challenged to think about defining success based on evaluation of their purpose, values, integrity and demonstrating compassion. They will be inspired to become a committed leader to maximizing their influence and impact- regardless of their industry, community, culture, or other context. To measure outcomes, we will have participants complete a survey. Wilson Leung, Co-Founder at Thinking Forward

Additionally, attendees will be presented with important guidelines to follow in order to build a better brand. The Model Minority in UnderRepresented Industries 8:45 am - 10:00 am Sheraton Hall c
The fastest growing group in the United States has been constantly placed on a pedestal for its accomplishments in education and employment. Comparison with the majority and against other minority groups is inevitable: the model minority is heavily concentrated in science and technology; they transport us in taxicabs; and, there are the family-owned businesses. However, away from the spotlight are professions in which Asian-Americans are disproportionately underrepresented. This workshop will explore the historical bias within the Asian-American community against certain professions and how the Asian-American psyche affects its perception of success and accomplishment. It will also offer thoughts on how to inspire the new generation to consider “nontraditional” career paths. We will conclude with an informal Q&A session. Mabel Menard, Campus College Chair at University of Phoenix
Mabel Menard is the Campus College Chair for the College of Social Sciences at University of Phoenix, Chicago. Asian Women Speaking Up: The Art of Being Heard 10:30 am - 11:45 am Sheraton Hall a/b
We’ve all seen it: a woman trying to get in a word in a meeting. When she finally does get the room’s attention, if she does, what stereotypes come to mind? Even in 2013 women, particularly Asian women, are often associated with unflattering personae when we make our voices heard. And true, some of us try so hard that we look aggressive, rather than assertive. Effective communication is an absolute requirement not only in the business world but in our lives outside the office, but we need to understand those stereotypes and how to avoid them. This interactive workshop will explore various techniques to get your point across effectively. Participants will then practice those skills in various scenarios. Marynka Rojas is a Senior Management Analyst with the Santa Clara Valley Water District, the largest multi-purpose water supply, watershed stewardship and flood management special district in the state. In November 2012, Nielsen released the State of the Asian American Consumer: Growing Market, Growing Impact. This inaugural report, which focuses on media consumption and buying behaviors, reveals that understanding the psychographic profile of Asian-Americans and reaching this group through in-culture and in-language vehicles can be good for business. Asian Americans have shown growth rates of more than 50 percent since the year 2000, the highest of any multicultural segment in the U.S. according to the U.S. Census 2010. The report provides U.S. marketers, with substantial information they can use to tap into the expanding growth opportunities with Asian-American consumers. Ms. Lo will provide report highlights and a Canadian pilot program for Toronto.

WINning! Motivation & Behavior 2:00 pm - 3:15 pm Sheraton Hall c
Asian Americans are viewed as a “model minority”: educated, hard-working and moderately successful. Yet according to research conducted by LEAP in 2012, we sit on less than 3% of Fortune 500 boards, hit the bamboo ceiling in middle management, and are not viewed as leaders. Despite having 90% of the qualifications, most women will concentrate on the 10% of the skills they have not developed. Men with 30% of the requirements will still go for their goals. In this workshop, you will dig into your deepest desires, figure out what factors limit your success, and design and share a strategic life plan to get you to your next steps! he National Association of Asian American Professionals (NAAAP) was founded 30 years ago in 1982 in New York City. At first, the organization was called the National Association of Young Asian Professionals. The name was soon changed to embrace a broader range of Asian Pacific American (APA) professionals and to better reflect a rapidly changing demographic. The organization at first was rather informal, providing networking opportunities for the post collegiate APA professionals and their families. Its commitment to being an organization for all Asian ethnicities and for all professions made it different from other groups in the city. New chapters sprung up in Boston in 1986 and Chicago in 1987. Together with New York, these three chapters formed the beginnings of NAAAP National. At first, the local officers of the three chapters merely shared ideas and networked at an annual summer retreat, but the benefits of having a structured national entity became apparent. NAAAP National’s 1991 retreat held in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, was more structured and accessible to the general membership. 1991 also saw the creation of the NAAAP National Board. NAAAP National held its first convention during the 1992 Labor Day weekend in Chicago with multiple tracks and programming, corporate sponsors and evening gala events. The Labor Day weekend timing of the convention was a tradition for several years. At the request of sponsors and career fair recruiters, the NAAAP National Convention finally changed to occur over a non-holiday weekend in 2000. The NAAAP National Convention location now rotates among the NAAAP chapters throughout North America. The Houston chapter was founded in 1994. The Asian Management Business Association in Seattle joined NAAAP in 1992, and Club Asean in San Francisco joined in 1996. These chapters officially changed their names to NAAAP Seattle and NAAAP San Francisco in 1999. To make NAAAP available to a wider audience, beginning in 1997, NAAAP National encouraged the development of chapter start-ups (known as Ventures) throughout North America. A few recent successful ventures who have achieved chapter status
include Atlanta (in 2002), North Carolina (in 2006), National Performance Indicators. Philadelphia (2006), and Phoenix (2012). Ventures were renamed Associated Chapters more recently in 2012 as NAAAP national and chapters have always been well. active in community service and fundraising.
