Stood for Federal House of Representitives at a by-election in the seat of Fawkner. Youngest ever MP at age 27. Minister in charge of Scientific and Industrial Research Research. Elevated to Cabinet as Minister for Labour and National Service. Transferred to seat of Higgings after the redribution saw his majority in Fawkner disapear. It was created as a safe liberal seat, he won easily. Minister for Labour and National Service. Minister for Immigration 1949 - 1956. Appointed Treasurer following the retirement of Arthur Fadden. Prime Minister following retirement of Robert Menzies.

In 1968, the newly commissioned United States Navy Knox class destroyer escort was named in Holts honour. She was launched by Holt’s widow Dame Zara at the Todd Ship yards in Los Angeles on 3 May 1969, and was the first American warship to bear the name of a foreign leader.

Cheviot Beach Seafloor Plaque In 1969, a plaque commemorating Holt was bolted to the seafloor off Cheviot Beach after a memorial ceremony. It bears the inscription: ‘In memory of Harold Holt, Prime Minister of Australia, who loved the sea and disappeared hereabouts on 17 December 1967.’ Harold Holt Fisheries Reserves Five protected areas in southern Port Phillip, located at Swan Bay, Point Lonsdale, Mud Islands, Point Nepean and Pope’s Eye (The Annulus). PROFILE Covers an area of 39 sq km. Electorate is mainly residential with commercial and retail in intrests in a number of suburbs Contains many affluent white collar suburbs, Toorak for example is Australia’s 12th most expensive suburb, Kooyong, the 21st most expensive (1). The seat has been a safe liberal seat since its creation in 1949. The first two members for the seat where Prime Ministers, Harold Holt (17th) and Sir John Gorton (19th), it is the only seat in the House of Reps to be held by 2 PM’s. Famoulsy Peter Costello who served as 11 and a half years as treasurer held the seat until he retired in 2009.
