ARCHITECTURE LATE 60’S

HARRY & PENELOPE SEIDLER HOUSE - HARRY SEIDLER KILLARA, SYDNEY 1966-1967

SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE - JORN UTZON SYDNEY 1959-1973

BAKER HOUSE - ROBIN BOYD BACCHUS MARSH, VICTORIA 1964-1966

Robin Boyd describes the house in his book living in Australia as follows: ‘As well as the usual accommodation for the family the, house was to contain a schoolroom where the children could be taught at home. No public services were available when the building started, although electricity came soon after. Rainwater had to be caught and stored and it seemed necessary to supplement the thin shade from the profuse of gums. A strong brown slate that split into thick chunks was available locally. Somehow it was like designing a building for Robinson Crusoe. This would be the only manmade thing to disturb the calm of the bush. So despite the romantic materials, a classical closed formality seemed called for in the form of the structure. The roof became a low pyramid, 27.5 metres square over symmetrically curved stone walls linked by straight window walls. The tanks became stone cylinders supporting the edge of the roof. Service rooms and children’s sleeping cubicles formed an inner ring around the court.’ The internal courtyard serves as the owners private traditional English garden, with scubland surrounding the exterior of the house.

ELROD HOUSE - JOHN LAUTNER PALM SPRINGS, CALIFORNIA 1968

The Elrod house was commissioned by interior designer Arthur Elrod. Arguably the most widely seen of Lautner’s works, the Elrod House (1968) became famous through its use as a location in the Bond film Diamonds Are Forever.[42][43] Situated on a commanding hillside in the desert outside Palm Springs, California, its best-known feature is the large circular “sunburst concrete canopy which appears to float above the main living area; this area also incorporates a large natural rock outcrop at the edge of the room, creating the impression that the fabric of the building is fused with the rock. The canopy is fitted with curved glass-and-aluminium sliding doors that allow the space to be completely opened around half its circumference, opening out to a semi-circular swimming pool and a broad terrace. The Elrod House is one of Lautners last examples of a distributed plan in which Lautner radiates zones off the building into distinctive segments that spread out from a central point, often to the perimeters of the site.

KIMBELL ART MUSEUM - LOUIS KAHN FORT WORT, TEXAS 1966- 1972

SAN CRISTOBAL - LUIS BARRAGAN MEXICO CITY, MEXICO 1966-1968

San Cristobal consists of a private dwelling and stud farm just outside of Mexico City. The site layoit is often described as having surreal undertones. A dwelling for humans is placed next to a dwelling for horses, the plans echoing one another as if there were no essential difference between these two types of animal. The human house is a composition of stucco cubic forms perforated by squarish windows and divided into two main blocks by the entrance hall internally. The dwelling plan in intself is unremarkable, the main intrest being the relationship between the internal and external. The dividing wall, / verandah / pool arrangment of the human house is repeated on a larger scale scale for the horses. The pool is made monumental by a waterfall that arcs out of a continuation of the stables wall. Oversized colourful walls line the perimeter and divide spaces with carefully placed apetures allowing access and views between spaces. Barragans could be described as a Mexican Modernist, though further to this, his work after World War 2 is often described as ‘emotional,’ ‘surreal’ and ‘mythical’.
