A beacon of a bygone era, the emblematic 16th century Citadel of Cascais is home to the new Historic Design Pousada. After painstaking restoration of the old fortress, this project embraces a new generation of Pousadas (Viseu, Estoi, Porto), bigger in size and with outstanding architectural heritage. Aware of the vital importance of the Citadel as a touristic landmark, this luxurious new Pousada will add to the cultural value of Cascais, not only in terms of restoration of a historic building, as well as opening new markets to the region. The striking new Pousada is the daring creation of architects Goncalo Byrne and David Sinclair while committed to the goal of preserving and respecting the environmental sustainability, the heritage value of the site and the natural beauty of the surroundings.

History of the Pousada: The Citadel of Cascais and the Fortress of Nossa Senhora da Luz (Our Lady of Light) located within the Citadel, are part of the military forts built between the 15 th and the 17th centuries to defend the coast and the entry to the Tejo River estuary. In 1488, King D. João II, commanded the construction of the fortified tower at the Salmondo Point due to the frequent incursions of British, French and Moorish pirates and the need to secure the defense of Lisbon. The Fort of Our Lady of Light with its triangular layout attests to the innovative ideas of the Italian military architects at the time, unprecedented in Portugal. Located in the Citadel Square, the Cistern with its arched ceiling and majestic presence provides a unique and inspiring space for business meetings and events. From 1871 until the fall of the monarchy, the Citadel served as residence for the royal family. King D. Luis I died here. It was in Cascais that the royal family first acquired the habit of going to the beach. From henceforth, the nobles and prominent families built their palaces and stately mansions here, rapidly turning Cascais into a world famous resort, a true cosmopolitan area. After the proclamation of the Republic, the palace became dependent on the Presidency of the Republic and later became the official residence of President Oscar Carmona who lived here during most of his term in office.

A fresh and welcoming décor, with ice creams really tasting of fruit and other sweet little surprises: the creation of bold harmonies between the conventional Portuguese sweets and ice creams, which are always based on the recipe of conventional Portuguese sweets, which the Pousadas of Portugal are their faithful entrustee.
