Big Fat Myth: Eating for a Healthy Heart The
M
By Dr. DeAnne Miller, D.C.
Most of us grew up believing that foods like red meat, eggs, and bacon are detrimental to heart health; an idea so deeply ingrained in our cultural psyche that few people even question it. But is it really true? Over the past 50 years, Americans have cut fat intake by 25% and increased carbohydrates by more than 30%. But, recent studies have increasingly shown that diets high in carbohydrates, sugar, and refined grains increase the risk of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease much more than diets high in fat and cholesterol.
Clearly, the belief that it’s good for us to kick fat and cholesterol to the curb is a myth - and one that has actually worsened our health. Consider the science: on any given day, we have up to 1,700 milligrams of cholesterol in our body. 25% of that comes from our diet while 75% is actually produced by the liver. The body tightly regulates the amount of cholesterol in the blood by controlling internal production; when cholesterol
intake in the diet goes down, the body makes more. When cholesterol intake in the diet goes up, the body makes less. In other words, eating cholesterol isn’t going to give you a heart attack. But what about saturated fat? It’s true that some studies show that saturated fat intake raises blood cholesterol levels; however, these studies are almost always short-term, lasting only a few weeks. More reliable, longer-term studies have failed to prove a link between saturated fat intake and blood cholesterol levels. Refined carbs, sugar, and processed foods are the real enemy—not the saturated fats found in foods such as butter, lard, or eggs.
3 Tips for a Truly Heart-Healthy Diet 1. Avoid sugar, processed fructose, and grains. Steering clear of processed foods is crucially important to heart health! 2. Toss aside the egg-white omelettes. The yolk contains 13 essential nutrients and is an especially good source of choline, a little known B-vitamin that plays a vitally important role in maintaining cellular health. Studies show that up to 90% of Americans

3. Eat a healthy diet of whole foods, ideally organic, and replace the grain carbs with: o As many vegetables as you want! o Low-to-moderate amounts of high-quality
protein (think organic, pasture-raised animals).
o High-quality healthy fat. Most people
actually need 50-85% fat in their diet for optimal health—a far cry from the 10 percent currently recommended. Sources of healthy fats to add to your diet include avocados, grass fed meat and butter, coconut oil, organic pastured eggs, raw dairy products, and raw unheated nuts. he holidays may be over, but refund season is just beginning, and there’s a lot to celebrate. This tax season, while consumers are eagerly awaiting their refund, tax preparation companies, tax officials and the IRS are working together to combat one of the fastest growing threats for tax season 2016 — tax identity fraud.
Keep your paper records safe. Shred records you are no longer using and keep your social security card and any sensitive documents under lock and key.
3
Do not respond to individuals posing as a tax agency. The IRS does not demand immediate
payment without sending a bill in the mail first. If you receive a phone call or an email with an external link, do not click on the link or share personal or financial information unless you personally know the person on the other end.
Based on IRS data, nearly 3 million people have been victims of tax identity theft since 2010. Every year, criminals use increasingly advanced tactics — particularly geared toward taxpayers filing online — to steal taxpayers’ personal information, file fraudulent tax returns in their names and steal their refunds. After fraud occurs, it can take months and multiple steps by the victim to access a stolen refund and regain an identity with the IRS.

HEALTH
Chiropractic and Blood Pressure Dr. Don Gray of Family Chiropractic
I
’ve been asked a few times if adjustments to the spine can have an effect on blood pressure. First, let me state that Chiropractors do not treat high blood pressure. When a patient comes in with high blood pressure, I always suggest they go to their medical doctor for an evaluation. Having said that, there has been a study done which shows that a specialized adjustment to the top vertebra in the neck can actually lower blood pressure. The leader of this study is Dr. George Bakris, M.D. He is also the director of the University of Chicago Hypertension Center. He stated, “This procedure has the effect of not one, but two bloodpressure medications given in combination, and it seems to be adverse-event free. We saw no side effects and no problems.” The study was for 8 weeks. The participants included 50 patients, all with early-stage high blood pressure. Twendy-five of them received the correct adjustment to the top bone in the neck, the
atlas. The other 25 received an adjustment, but not to the top vertebra. The 25 that were adjusted for the atlas, showed significantly lower blood pressure than the 25 patients who received an adjustment, but not to the atlas.
“This procedure has the effect of not one, but two blood-pressure medications given in combination, and it seems to be adverse-event free. We saw no side effects and no problems.” This clearly shows that with adjusting the atlas, the blood pressure drops. This does not, however, mean that those patients are taken off of their blood pressure medications. Robin Roberts from the ABC morning show “Good Morning America” taped a special report on how chiropractic actually helps patients with high blood pressure. In the story, she talks to the ABC medical consultant Tim Johnson, M.D., who was reserved in his reporting of the findings, but stated that he was still impressed. He stated, “[There are] a lot of unanswered questions. But I’m telling you, this catches our attention because of a significant drop in blood pressure. It absolutely deserves more study.” He also stated, “The truth is we really don’t know that vertebra at the top of the neck is in a critical area where the brain stem, the lower part of the brain, is involved with regulation of blood pressure. It’s theoretically imaginable that changing the anatomy of that area may have effect on regulating blood pressure.” This is very exciting news. In looking at what chiropractic does, we look at the spine to see if there are any mis-alignments that would cause the nerves to be irritated. If there is irritation, then those nerves will not be able to function at optimal levels. We

then are able to adjust, or move, those bones back to where they should be, and then the nerves don’t experience the irritation that was there before. This allows the nerves to start to function better, and thus restore health. Although the vast majority of patients present with back pain, we also treat headaches, and neck pain. As always, come in and get checked out, and start back on the road to better health.

Romance at
the Palace Hotel By Wendy VanHatten
Y
ou’ve decided to indulge in a romantic week-end getaway and you want to stay in a hotel that will fill all your expectations. The one that comes to mind for me is The Palace Hotel in San Francisco. It’s close in distance and yet so elegant, you’ll think you’re far away. Perhaps you weren’t thinking it was important for you to have a telegraph on every floor, however. What? A telegraph? How about a private bath or rising rooms? In 1875 these modern technological advancements catered to the social elite, dignitaries who were looking for the best in hotels, travelers, business titans, honeymooners, and those who wanted a special place. In fact, at the time
The Palace Hotel in San Francisco was the largest hotel in the world… and a true innovator of its time. No wonder it quickly became ‘the place’ to stay. Then came the earthquake of 1906 and in the fires that accompanied it, the Palace Hotel was destroyed. All the marble, crystal chandeliers, and opulence were reduced to ruble. Only three years later, the new Palace opened its doors, using what they found in that ruble and adding new spectacular acquisitions…grander than before the fires. Fast forward to 2015 when the latest renovations were complete. The old…the new… the newest, all blend together as the fresh design pairs with timeless elegance.
boom 12
So, what’s the Palace Hotel like now?
Want to see another treasure within the hotel? Head to the Pied Piper lounge for a drink and look at the masterpiece above the bar. This Pied Piper painting was commissioned from Maxfield Parish in 1909 for $6,000. It represents the tale of the Pied Piper…with a twist. Parish painted himself as the Pied Piper and some of the 27 expressive faces include those of his wife, his mistress, his sons, and more. What a guy!
One area, the Garden Court, is a San Francisco monument and the crown jewel of the hotel. Sit down, have a glass of wine or a cup of coffee, and look around. The massiveness of the Italian marble columns might first catch your eye. But, the stained glass ceiling will certainly cause you to sit and stare. The seven million dollar price tag hardly seems enough. Austrian crystal chandeliers positioned throughout, sparkle as the light comes through the stained glass. It’s no wonder the entire room, 110 feet long and 85 feet wide, has seen its share of engagements, celebrations, and parties for literally over a hundred years. Close your eyes and you can almost see a Prince, a former president, or a Silicon Valley techie entertaining their guests here.
Memories of a grand, historic era combined with technology of today…the Palace Hotel offers comfort and style to globe-trotting travelers, families with children, cutting edge business people, and those looking for a magical place to stay.
If you go: The Palace Hotel is located at 2 New Montgomery Street in San Francisco. Phone number is 415-512-1111 and their website is http://www.sfpalace.com/.
Hungry? What better place to have lunch, or tea, or Sunday brunch? In this era of using organic and locally sourced ingredients, the chefs excel. You will find 80% of the food offered is local, sustainable, and farm fresh. History even manages to find its way into your lunch. Ever had Green Goddess dressing? In 1923 this dressing was first served at a Palace dinner honoring actor George Arliss. Did you know their famous crab salad has been on the menu since 1909? Same recipe…new crab!

When staying here, you’ll take one of those rising rooms, now known as elevators, to your floor. Check out the wide hallways; wider than in your average hotel. Notice the door knobs on the massive, dark doors. Both are elegant. Even though the doors have been retrofitted for a keyless entry, the knobs are from 1909. They feel substantial in your hand. Finally, pay attention to the doors…solid wood and heavy. Again, from 1909. Entering your room, you’ll notice the room seems spacious. The ceilings are 11 feet, offering a sense of grand size. No wonder The Palace Hotel was and continues to be the premier place to stay.

Insights and Inspirations… by Miss Kitty (By Camie Bianchi, Your Home Nursing)
Soon, it’s going to be Spring… and I’ve given this season a lot of thought. I remember when I was young and fine, there wasn’t a tom in the neighborhood that didn’t come when I meowed! I thought love was all about being a sexy kitty. You know, what I mean, fine looking body, shiny coat, fluffy beautiful tail, and I had a walk

on the fence that made all the boys roll around on the grass for hours… Girlfriends, I was fine! So, of course I thought I wanted a tom that was the same… handsome, big strong paws and a strut that would have all the girls watching out their windows late at night. Well, the craziest thing happened… a new family moved into the neighborhood and they had a cat named Melvin. I could hardly wait to check him out… one warm morning, all us girls were visiting in the early morning sunshine, when one of them said “Girlfriends, I saw Melvin last nite and let me tell you, he’s ugly and walks funny.” I was so disappointed; I had hoped I’d have a new fine looking boyfriend. I finally met Melvin and the funny thing… I liked him. He was sweet, funny and I just felt good around him. My girlfriends really gave me a hard time, pointing their paws at me and saying.. “What are you doing hanging with that ugly thing? You know, it’s a fine looking tom you want” Well, it’s been 22 years and I still adore Melvin. He’s given me three litters of the most beautiful babies, we live in a nice neighborhood that loves animals, and Melvin has the most beautiful heart in the world. Girlfriends, he’s one fine thing to me. So, it’s one thing to look fine, it’s another to have a fine heart. Here’s hoping you find your Valentine… and remember to look beyond “THE FINE LOOK.” P.S. I’ve gained 10 lbs, my tail has lost most of its fluff, but Melvin still thinks I’m one fine sexy kitty!

Where Do You See Yourself in 10 Years? By Terry Minion
I’ve always loved movies. I’ve watched thousands of them in my life beginning as soon as I could change the channel on the old black & white TV, watching all those movies from the 30s and 40s. My latest favorite is called, The Intern, with Robert De Niro, Anne Hathaway, and Rene Russo. The reviews weren’t very good, but I love it (tells you what critics mean to me. . .) because it makes me feel good, and I like feeling good. If you haven’t seen it, Robert De Niro’s character applies for a “senior intern” position at a start-up clothing company and is assigned as a personal assistant to the CEO, Anne Hathaway, but she isn’t thrilled to deal with that. He overcomes her resistance with patience and by providing value, which I think almost everyone appreciates.
It’s one of those silly questions that employers and their representatives often ask. Heck, I asked it many times myself in interviewing potential hires. It must be one of those things that came from some expert seminar or something, but it is truly a silly question. I can remember being 20 and could not even imagine in my head being 30, so how would I answer that question? In the movie, he is 70 and at first I laughed, and then I calculated that I am 68 this year, and could relate to his surprise at such a silly question. It’s difficult to consider the future that far out. Heck, it’s difficult to consider it only a year from now, and the older I get in years, the more I focus on now. I can’t do anything in the future, but I certainly can do something now. Many want us to worry about the future, but that simply destroys our today. I get the question and its meaning. They want to know what our ambitions are, if we have much ambition, what our goals are, how we will grow to become more, and so on. Wonderful. Why not ask those questions. But, here’s some better ones to consider, I think. See if you agree. How can I enjoy my life more right now? How can I be more loving right now? In what ways can I be of more value right now? With all my experience in life, who can I share the value of my unique perspective with for their benefit (and mine) right now? How can I love myself more right now? In what ways can I spend more time focusing on joy right now? What excites me? What causes me to want to dance? How can I find more inner peace right now? How about this: Where do you see yourself right now?
In the interview before getting the position, he is asked by a 20-something interviewer, “Where do you see yourself in 10 years?” His answer, “What? You mean when I’m 80?” The kid backpedals not really realizing that he is now 70 years old. boom 22

HEALTH
By Anthony Agadzi M.D.
Glaucoma – is a group of eye disorders which result in the common pathway of permanent and irreversible damage of the optic nerve of the eye, leading ultimately to permanent blindness. As a leading cause of blindness worldwide, this characteristic group of eye conditions is usually related to problems with internal pressure regulation inside the eyeball. The internal pressure of the eye is derived from the circulating clear fluid inside the eye called the aqueous humor. This can, of course, be distinguished from the external fluid of the eye, which we think of as tears. As aqueous humor is produced inside the eye it is constantly draining through specialized internal pores and channels from the eye into the bloodstream. In glaucoma, the internal drainage system of the eye becomes obstructed. As this happens, pressure builds up inside the eye as the aqueous humor continues to be produced, but is unable to exit the eye. Over time, the build up of pressure causes permanent damage to the optic nerve which sends the visual signal to the brain. As this happens the eye loses vision. The name ‘Glaucoma’ was originally derived from the ancient Greek lexicon to describe the greyish hue of the front of the eye – the cornea – as it swells up because of high pressure. The modern definition of the disease has now come to encompass many different conditions – even ones in which the boom 24
pressure may actually be normal or low – but still result in permanent damage to the optic nerve. Although anyone can essentially develop glaucoma from newborns to the very elderly, it is generally associated with ageing, certain ethnic predisposition, family history, genetics, and other associated conditions like trauma or eye injury. Glaucoma can also be associated with medical conditions like diabetes, as well as certain types of infectious and inflammatory diseases of the body.
If detected early enough, there are some useful long term treatments in the form of eye drops and certain medications which can slow down or in some cases arrest the progression of the disease. In general, glaucoma is a slow and silent disease that causes vision loss gradually, and without noticeable symptoms. Some forms of glaucoma however may rarely cause more symptoms, such as a painful, red eye, and rapid vision loss. It can be difficult to detect glaucoma because, in general the initial visual changes tend to be in one’s periphery. Often times it is not until the disease is far advanced that the central vision becomes affected – usually by then the damage cannot be reversed.
There is no known cure or treatment to reverse the damage or vision loss from this devastating disease. However, if detected early enough, there are some useful long term treatments in the form of eye drops and certain medications which can slow down or in some cases arrest the progression of the disease. Additionally, if medications or eye drops are unable to control the eye pressure, there are special laser procedures for glaucoma available. When medications, drops and lasers no longer work to control the disease, surgery may be the only solution. In general, because of the devastating nature of this disease it is important to be aware of your risk factors for the disease. Talk to your eye care professional about getting a thorough evaluation for glaucoma especially if you: › Have a family history of glaucoma › Are of African American, Hispanic/Latin or Asian ethnic background › Have had an eye, face or head injury › Are over age 40
› Have any unexplained vision loss or blurry vision not correctable by glasses. A visit to your eye care professional could save your sight even if you think you are seeing well. An eye care professional can check your eye pressure, screen you for risk factors, and conduct certain specialized vision tests to determine if you have the disease or if you are a low or high risk suspect. Glaucoma is considered a medical condition and most health insurance plans as well as vision plans do cover basic screening for this potentially blinding disease. It is important to understand that glaucoma is not caused by using your eyes in a normal routine way. Reading a novel, your ipad or sitting in front of a computer, or even watching TV does not cause you to have glaucoma. Avoiding normal activities of daily living will generally not affect your risk for developing this disease. Anthony Agadzi M.D., Redwood Eye Center, Vallejo, CA 94591

HEALTH Jeanette Mahoney, 58, a life-long Napa resident, was the first patient at Queen of the Valley Medical Center to receive the new device, after suffering a heart attack at her home in Napa.
Queen of the Valley: New Cardiac Device
An ICD is a small implantable heart device that is placed under the skin typically just below the collarbone on the left side of the chest. They are designed to continuously monitor heart rate and deliver an electrical signal to correct a lifethreatening heart rate, if detected. MRI is an imaging test used regularly for a wide range of diagnoses including conditions such as stroke, cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, and muscle, bone and back pain, all which are prevalent among older adults.
Queen of the Valley Medical Center among first hospitals in the North Bay to offer new FDA-approved implantable device to treat sudden cardiac arrest (Napa, Calif.) Queen of the Valley Medical Center is now offering patients the first implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) system approved for use with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans.
On September 14, 2015, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the Evera MRI™ SureScan® ICD System from Medtronic for MRI scans on any part of the body. The system includes design enhancements from previous generation devices that allow it to safely undergo full-body MRIs, while maintaining the same longevity, proven shock reduction and physical size and shape of the original Evera ICD. The device is paired with the Sprint Quattro® Secure MRI SureScan® DF4 leads, backed by more than 10 years of proven performance with active monitoring, now tested for safe use during an MRI.
Sergio Manubens, MD, board-certified interventional cardiologist and director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratories at Queen of the Valley, was the first in Napa and Solano counties to implant the new device in a patient. “This is an important advancement for patients who rely on ICDs to detect irregular heartbeats and deliver life-saving therapy to restore a normal rhythm,” said Dr. Manubens. “Until now, these patients could not receive MRI scans on any part of their body.”
Queen of the Valley, a recognized leader in heart care and home to the area’s only Level III Trauma Center, is currently acquiring a new, multifunctional cardiac catheterization lab and a nuclear medicine imaging platform that will further increase the hospital’s ability to conduct minimally invasive procedures and treat a wide range of clinical problems including coronary artery disease — a leading cause of heart disorders in the U.S. For more information, visit queensfoundation.org.
Dr. Manubens explained that older ICDs heat up when placed in a magnetic field and this in turn causes the heart muscle to heat up which can result in problems for the patient. The MRI restrictions of standard ICDs have resulted in a critical unmet need as data have shown that, within four years, more than one-third of patients with ICDs are likely to need an MRI, according to Medtronic, the maker of the new device.

mericans’ value of lifelong learning has a short history. In fact, many point to millions of postWorld War II veterans who flooded college campuses as the first wave of a massive cultural shift. Lifelong education — once reserved for aristocrats or deemed a waste of time — became the norm in the mid-1950s.
engaged,” shares Jane Walker, marketing director of Paradise Valley Estates. Walker notes that ongoing learning helps maintain health and can slow aging problems including reduced vision, hearing loss and slowing brain function. While Paradise Valley Estates’ more than 500 residents hold varied interests, the community maintains a very robust class offering. Not only do residents continually bring forward new ideas and opportunities for programming, many take their commitment a step further by leading classes or organizing groups. One “neighbor teaching neighbors” is three-year Paradise Valley Estates
The tradition is thriving in retiree-focused communities such as Fairfield’s Paradise Valley Estates, a Northern California life plan community founded by military officers. However, today, community leaders know there are deeper benefits in learning than simply gaining knowledge. “Educational activities are popular because they keep residents Yuriko McKenna helps residents design and create handcrafted cards.

resident Kim Marshall. Marshall, a 36-year educator, has taught Spanish at nearly every level of education from middle school to college. “I love teaching and especially Spanish,” says Marshall.
Paradise Valley Estates resident Fred Barthmus, who holds a doctorate in adult education, brings 21 years of teaching experience to the community’s active Apple® users group. There, residents can learn about Apple products and software. “One of my favorite things about teaching older adults is that they are excited to learn and want to be there in the class,” he says.
With students ranging in age from 73 to 92, Marshall runs classes as reader’s theatres so students learn Spanish through engaging vehicles such as a play or songs. “The culmination is a dinner where students order in Spanish from a written Spanish menu and either sing Spanish songs for residents during dinner or present their play,” says Marshall.
Lifelong education isn’t a passing fancy for retirees bored with golf; it’s a way of life retirees are accustomed to. Walker believes Paradise Valley Estates’ commitment to a broad education program makes the community stronger.
❝One of my favorite things about teaching older adults is that they are excited to learn and want to be there in the class,❞
“It’s a great way for residents to interact with each other and gain respect for the individual paths each has taken here,” she says.
Vacaville Convalescent & Rehab Center
While instructors like Marshall rely on decades of teaching, classroom experience isn’t required. “Some residents have so much passion about certain activities, it inspires others,” says Walker. Another Paradise Valley Estates resident-instructor is Yuriko McKenna, who creates handmade cards. “I have always made thank you cards as tokens or gifts,” she says. “After I donated some cards to the community store, people started asking me how I made them.” Paradise Valley Estates’ life enrichment manger, Denise Flowerday, leads the community’s activity program. While Flowerday learns of residents’ talents organically, she also works closely with a committee of residents to cultivate appealing learning opportunities that pique residents’ interest.

FOOD & WINE
Spectacular Venue for 29th Solano Wine & Food Jubilee Promising to be a gala like no other, the 29th Solano Wine & Food Jubilee returns to Vacaville for 2016, and will take place at the opulent Sunrise Event Center on Saturday, April 23. The event center, at 620 Orange Drive, officially opened late in 2015, and the 29th Annual Solano Wine & Food Jubilee will be its biggest event to date. The elaborately decorated center features glittery chandeliers, marble floors, and cherry wood paneling throughout. It should prove to be the perfect venue to host Solano County’s most gala event, a benefit for the programs of NorthBay Hospice
& Bereavement. Jubilee tickets, at $125 each, go on sale Feb. 1, 2016, and will be available through Eventbrite. Those wishing to attend are urged to make their purchases quickly, as it promises to be an early sell out. Ticketholders can expect to experience some of the things they’ve come to love about Wine & Food Jubilees of the past, as well as some new enticements, according to Bill Seiden, Wine & Food Jubilee event chairman. The venue will set an elegant tone for the evening. Starting at 5:30 p.m. for VIPs and sponsors, and 6:30 p.m. for the general public, ticketholders sample foods, wines and brews offered by a number of Solano County’s most popular restaurateurs, breweries and wineries, or peruse an array of items -from exotic vacations to sports memorabilia -- in the Jubilee Silent Auction. Dancing to the popular dance band The Rhythm Method 4 begins shortly after 9 p.m. But, before dancers take the floor, the top prize in the Jubilee Raffle is announced. That lucky ticketholder can chose from one of three brand new cars, offered by Rami Yanni of Vacaville Buick GMC, Vacaville Nissan, Vacaville Dodge and Vacaville Hyundai: either a 2016 Hyundai Sonata, Buick Encore or Nissan Altima. In addition to the choice

of cars as a top prize, $10,000 in cash will be awarded, as well, according to Wendy Jackson, raffle chair. There will be 12 winners of $125, 10 winners of $500, one winner of $1,000 and one $2,500 winner. Raffle tickets are $50 each or buy two and get the third for free. They can be purchased by calling (707) 6463133, purchased with a credit card by fax at (707) 646-3135, or in person at the NorthBay Healthcare Foundation office at 4500 Business Center Drive in Fairfield, or at Jackson Medical Supply on Main Street in Vacaville. Odds of winning something are about one in 100, Jackson adds, as only 2,500 tickets will be sold.
The 29th Annual Solano Wine & Food Jubilee is a dressy, black-tie affair, and proceeds benefit NorthBay Hospice & Bereavement. Presenting Sponsors are Al and Patt Shaw, Freeman Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, Rami Yanni of Vacaville Nissan, Dodge, Hyundai and Buick GMC, Financial Architects Partners, and Western Health Advantage. The event gets under way at 6:30 p.m. Tickets, for those ages 21 and over, are $125 each and must be purchased in advance by going to www. wineandfoodjubilee.org. Even with hearing loss solutions, it can still be challenging. Untreated hearing loss can also emotionally impact adult children, especially those who have encouraged their parents to get help.
But first, it’s important to understand how untreated hearing loss can impact your relationships: Child/parent relationships
Romantic relationships
Untreated hearing loss can also affect relationships with children. When kids are small, it could potentially be a dangerous situation if you can’t hear their cries. As children are older and begin talking, it can be difficult to engage and understand
Romantic relationships are dependent upon emotional, verbal and physical connections. For people who are hard of hearing and their significant others, hearing loss can be a barrier to all of these things. In a 2007 article from The ASHA Leader, 41
Napa/Solano Edition
audiologist and professor Patricia Chute talked about some of the confusion involved in romantic relationships with hearing loss: "All too often spouses blame each other's ability to listen when in fact it is truly a hearing problem that is chipping away at their ability to communicate," Chute said. And a survey by Cochlear Americas that same year revealed that the relationship people with hearing loss cited as most likely to suffer was that with their romantic partner - a whopping 35 percent said romantic relationships trumped others in communication difficulties. When asked about their feelings when conversing with someone who appeared not to be listening because of hearing loss, 54 percent of people said they felt frustrated, 32 percent felt annoyed, 23 percent were sad and 18 percent felt ignored. It›s not hard to imagine that relationships with significant others suffer the most; after all, in today›s busy world of work, volunteer activities
and raising children or grandchildren, romantic relationships often thrive on finding brief, spontaneous and meaningful moments to connect emotionally. But these opportunities for connection are often unscripted. However, with untreated hearing loss, romance and spontaneity often have to be removed from the factor as cues are missed and communication must be planned. Friends Social relationships also suffer with untreated hearing loss. For example, if friends don’t realize you have hearing loss, they may think you are a poor listener or don’t really care about them. For example, if you have a phone call with your best friend and she tells you when everyone is getting together for her birthday celebration, but your hearing loss causes you to hear the wrong time or date, she may think you just didn’t care to show up. She might not call you again, and your feelings may be hurt. This communication mix-up could cause you to withdraw from others in the future, leading to isolation and potentially depression. Colleagues Untreated hearing loss can put a strain on work relations, much for the same reasons outlined above: Communication is at the heart of working with colleagues. Even in a work environment where your role is not collaborative, your hearing loss might cause you to miss something important. Luckily, many things are done via email, but work meetings may be especially tough when several people are talking at once. For example, you may miss your boss’s cue to give your input, or you may not be able to participate fully in a meeting when more than one person is talking at a time. Thus, colleagues may think you are ignoring them or are not willing to work hard and contribute. Maintaining good and stress free relationships is important for our health and happiness. Living alone in Texas wasn’t a good situation. I’d just lost my wife, and I was far away from my family. That’s why the kids and I decided to visit Paradise Valley Estates, together. It fit me perfectly. My home is top-notch, the people are great, and fitness and golf are back in my regular routine. This situation? Nothing short of rewarding.
QUALITY MATTERS.
