hear low, middle, and high frequency sounds in both ears. The link between diabetes and hearing loss was evident across all frequencies, with a stronger association in the high frequency range. Mild or greater hearing impairment of low- or midfrequency sounds in the worse ear was about 21 percent in 399 adults with diabetes compared to about 9 percent in 4,741 adults without diabetes. For high frequency sounds, mild or greater hearing impairment in the worse ear was 54 percent in those with diabetes compared to 32 percent in those who did not have the disease.

H

earing loss is about twice as common in adults with diabetes compared to those who do not have the disease, according to a new study funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Adults with pre-diabetes, whose blood glucose is higher than normal but not high enough for a diabetes diagnosis, had a 30 percent higher rate of hearing loss compared to those with normal blood sugar tested after an overnight fast.

"Hearing loss may be an under-recognized complication of diabetes. As diabetes becomes more common, the disease may become a more significant contributor to hearing loss," said senior author Catherine Cowie, Ph.D., of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), who suggested that people with diabetes should consider having their hearing tested. "Our study found a strong and consistent link between hearing impairment and diabetes using a number of different outcomes."

The study, published early online June 17, 2008, in the Annals of Internal Medicine, was conducted by researchers from the NIDDK, the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), components of the NIH, and Social & Scientific Systems, Inc., which provides support on public health topics to NIH and other government agencies.

The researchers discovered the higher rate of hearing loss in those with diabetes after analyzing the results of hearing tests given to a nationally representative sample of adults in the United States. The test measured participants’ ability to

The researchers analyzed data from hearing tests administered from 1999 to 2004 to participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics, part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Half of the 11,405 survey participants aged 20 to 69 were randomly assigned to have their hearing tested,

and nearly 90 percent of them completed the hearing exam and the diabetes questionnaire. The hearing test, called pure tone audiometry, measures hearing sensitivity across a range of sound frequencies. "Using the data from the hearing tests, we measured hearing impairment in eight different ways. Also, participants responded to questions about hearing loss in the questionnaire, which asked whether they had a little trouble hearing, a lot of trouble hearing, or were deaf without a hearing aid," said Cowie. In addition, 2,259 of the participants who received hearing tests were randomly assigned to have their blood glucose tested after an overnight fast. Earlier U.S. studies that examined diabetes and hearing loss found a weaker association or no association, but these studies were based on smaller samples of older adults, and they were not nationally representative, according to co-author Howard Hoffman, an epidemiologist at NIDCD. "This is the first study of a nationally representative sample of working age adults, 20 to 69 years old, and we found an association between diabetes and hearing impairment evident as early as ages 30 to 40."

"The link between diabetes and hearing loss has been debated since the 1960s or before, and our results show that a relationship exists even when we account for the major factors known to affect hearing, such as age, race, ethnicity, income level, noise exposure, and the use of certain medications," noted Kathleen Bainbridge, Ph.D., of Social & Scientific Systems, Inc. patients have shown evidence of such damage.

American adults — 36 million people — report some degree of hearing loss. There is a strong relationship between age and reported hearing loss: 8 percent of American adults 18 to 44 years old, 19 percent of adults 45 to 64 years old, and 30 percent of adults 65 to 74 years old report trouble with hearing. For information about the causes and treatment of hearing loss, see http://www. nidcd.nih.gov/health/hearing/.

Diabetes is a group of diseases marked by high levels of blood glucose resulting from defects in insulin production, insulin action, or both. Afflicting nearly 21 million people in the United States, it is a major cause of heart disease and stroke and the most common cause of blindness, kidney failure, and lower limb amputations in adults. Pre-diabetes, which causes no symptoms, affects about 54 million adults in the United States, many of whom will develop type 2 diabetes in the next 10 years. Pre-diabetes raises the risk of a heart attack or stroke even if diabetes does not develop. People with pre-diabetes can often prevent or delay diabetes if they lose a modest amount of weight by cutting calories and increasing physical activity. People with diabetes also benefit from diet and exercise as well as medications that control blood glucose, blood pressure, and cholesterol. For information about the causes, prevention, and treatment of diabetes, see http://diabetes.niddk. nih.gov/.

The NIDDK conducts and supports research in diabetes and other endocrine and metabolic diseases; digestive diseases, nutrition, and obesity; and kidney, urologic, and hematologic diseases. Spanning the full spectrum of medicine and afflicting people of all ages and ethnic groups, these diseases encompass some of the most common, severe, and disabling conditions affecting Americans. For more information about NIDDK and its programs, see www.niddk.nih.gov. The NIDCD supports and conducts research and research training on the normal and disordered processes of hearing, balance, smell, taste, voice, speech and language and provides health information, based upon scientific discovery, to the public. For more information about NIDCD programs, see www.nidcd.nih.gov.

Most NHANES participants with diabetes had type 2 diabetes, which accounts for up to 95 percent of diabetes cases in the United States. Type 2 diabetes usually appears after age 40, and is more common in overweight, inactive people and in those with a family history of diabetes.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) — The Nation's Medical Research Agency — includes 27 Institutes and Centers and is a component of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. It is the primary federal agency for conducting and supporting basic, clinical and translational medical research, and it investigates the causes, treatments, and cures for both common and rare diseases. For more information about NIH and its programs, visit www.nih.gov.

Faithful and Untiring Advocate Lost By Yolo Hospice

olo Hospice and our community lost a faithful and untiring advocate when Tony Cueva left us January 26th, 2014 at his home surrounded by his family. Tony proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps, a Vietnam Veteran who received multiple awards and medals including the Navy Commendation Medal with Combat “V” for valor. Tony worked at Anheuser Busch for over 25 years until his retirement. He was founding president of the Mexican Open Golf Tournament which has earned money for numerous organizations throughout Solano and Yolo counties as well as scholarship awards to local high school seniors. He was born in Jalisco, Mexico on May 10, 1944 to Jose and Francisca Cueva. Tony is survived by his

beloved wife, Lourdes “Terri” Cueva; sons, Anthony Cueva (Hilda) and Joe Louis Cueva; grandchildren, Marisa and Tony; four brothers, five sisters. He was preceded in death by his son, John David Cueva, his parents, Jose and Francisca Cueva and his brother, Robert Cueva. St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Vacaville was filled to capacity with family and those of us who counted our blessings to be part of his huge “extended” family.

Those of us who were privileged to know and work with Tony will miss his energy and vitality that fuelled his passion to make a better place for others. In 2010 Tony was awarded the Living Legacy Award for Philanthropic Innovation. An award presented to him by the Senate, US Congress, Solano County Board of Supervisors and the CA State Assembly for his generosity, creativity, and engaging others in service to the community. Tony was also awarded in 2011 the “Community Quarterback Award” by the San Francisco 49ers Foundation in partnership with NFL charities to recognize his tireless dedication to our community. Those of us who were privileged to know and work with Tony will miss his energy and vitality that fuelled his passion to make a better place for others. He embraced and welcomed you into his large extended family. Since 2005, our patients and family members have benefitted from his generosity. Through his guidance, the Mexican Open Golf Committee has donated $56,006.40 to Yolo Hospice. Due to the respect and honor it has been to be a part of his life, his dedication and vision will continue. This first

meeting of the committee will be held this month to begin this year’s planning for the Mexican Open Golf Tournament, Saturday September 13th, 2014. This will be my third event. Many of our hospice staff volunteer and participate by golfing. We challenge each other to sign up a foursome for golf. Tony’s sisters and a large cadre of friends and family members prepare the food for the Mexican Fiesta celebration after the golfing. Mexican Folkloric Ballet and Mariachi band members make this celebration an event to remember. Generous donations from the community businesses provide numerous items for raffle prizes. It is an amazing event, like spending a day in Mexico. Into the evening hours, people enjoy dancing to the rhythms of rock and roll. Everyone works so hard to make it special. Skin

acials and body polishes are not just to help you “be pretty. Nurturing the skin is a health modality in itself, especially as we age. Winter takes a toll on our skin as cold temperatures, windy weather, and low humidity all make it harder for our skin to retain moisture. Each time we wash, we strip our skin of natural oils and moisture.

Prime Time Living 16

By Linda Tipton

The mainstay of our skin care is increased use of moisturizers as our skin needs to be kept hydrated. Be sure to use a daily skin cleanser with vitamins, minerals, and herbs, paying special attention to your hands. Frequent application of moisturizers is necessary to keep your hands looking and feeling good.

A few of my favorite things include: aloe, chamomile, calendula, lavender, essential oils, organic olive oil, almond oil, jojoba oil, and palm oil. Shea butter is naturally rich in vitamins A, E, and F. Shea butter is a natural nut oil that moisturizes, revitalizes, and softens skin.

CHIROPRACTIC & ACUPUNCTURE

Hyaluronic Acid is found naturally in the skin. It is a great plumper, capable of holding up to 1,000 times its own weight in water. The amount our body produces declines with age, so topical products with this ingredient can have a great effect on aging skin. Try drenching your hands and feet with lotion before going to bed and first thing in the morning. A light pair of gloves and socks helps keep the lotion on longer.

Sutter Solano Medical Center Focuses on Stroke Education, Treatment Primary Stroke Certification Achieved, Support Group Imminent By Therese Frank, R.N., M.S.

I

n November 2012, Sutter Solano Medical Center received Joint Commission Primary Stroke Certification, achieving recognition as an accredited hospital to provide evidence-based practices with respect to stroke. Since maintaining accreditation is an ongoing process, we’ll be continually refining and enhancing our stroke services— but we also need your help. Early treatment is key to reducing stroke’s long-term effects, so it’s important that everyone—even children—can recognize their signs. An easy way to remember the symptoms of stroke is the acronym FAST: face, arms, speech and time. Stroke victims’ faces may droop on one side; they may lose strength in their arms or suffer

from grip issues; and they may lose their ability to speak, be unable to put thoughts together or slur their speech. Initial signs can be mild—and are often attributed to being tired or simply aging—but it’s best to be safe rather than sorry and call 911 when you notice “FAS” symptoms. As for the “T,” time is of the essence for stroke patients, especially those with the most common type, ischemic. They can be treated with a clot-busting drug that significantly reduces stroke’s short- and long-term effects, but it must be given to patients within three hours of symptom onset. Once our team is involved in treating stroke patients, they receive the highest standards

of care. SSMC is one of six Sacramento Sierra Region facilities in the Sutter Stroke Network, which means we have immediate access to expanded resources, including consultations with specialists in areas like neurology and radiology. Our patients may

also benefit from our association with the Sutter Rehabilitation Institute, which helps achieve better outcomes through acute rehabilitation activities. Stroke patients and their families have another asset at their disposal, we offer a monthly support group at Sutter Solano Medical Center to help them deal with the often dramatic changes stroke has brought upon them. This free support and educational group connects stroke survivors and caregivers in the community the second Thursday of each month from 10:00am – 11:30am at the Sutter Solano Cancer Center, 100 Hospital Drive. Caregivers, friends and family are encouraged to attend.

This June, the Sutter Solano Stroke Support Group will host a special guest, Rosanna Radding to lead a free, one-handed cooking class and demonstration. Learn more about the demo at http://onehandcan.com Space is limited, so please reserve your spot by calling 707-554-5092. Our fondest wish is that people avoid stroke by eliminating its risk factors—high blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, obesity and high cholesterol—but when it does occur, we have the expertise and facilities to provide the best possible care. Ms. Frank is a clinical nurse educator/supervisor at Sutter Solano Medical Center in Vallejo.

How You Can Help the Solano County SPCA By Debbie Dillon

W

e have all watched the commercials on television. The sad music that plays while pictures of neglected animals in cages shows on the screen. It is a very sad truth. Animals are neglected, abused, and abandoned every day. There are rescues and shelters in every community that spend long emotionally draining and frustrating hours rescuing these animals. We haven’t really even started to make a dent in the problems. Communities have to work together and it starts at the beginning. We have to stop the problem before it starts. We have to have funding to do that. You can make a difference. You can help.

animals here in our community need help just as much. If you want to support the local shelters and rescues please donate directly to that charity.

We have all watched the commercials on television.

The SPCASC also now has a pet therapy group that takes animals to visit our senior citizens at local assisted living facilities. Many of these people had to give up their pets and love to have our pets

There are many ways to do exactly that. The SPCA of Solano County through a few very generous donations and animal loving people that included the SPCA of Solano County in wills and estate plans has increased programs and services. The biggest service is the opening of our low cost spay/neuter clinic. This will drastically lower the rate of unwanted animals in the shelter because there will be less animals born. Solve the problem at the beginning.

While those commercials are very powerful the truth is that the money donated to those organizations keep the money that is donated. Many people think that all shelters are somehow connected and all get a share. This is not what happens. The money donated to them stays at that organization. The ASPCA is a shelter located in New York. They do great work, in New York. The

and volunteers come spend some time where they can hold a cat on their lap for a little while. This particular program is starting to take on a life of its own. We are getting more and more people and pets wanting to join the program. It is very rewarding for everyone and the program is run completely by volunteers. It was developed by Derek Palm as a school project and is a very popular one.

You can have the satisfaction of knowing your generosity will leave a lasting legacy of hope for the lives of both animals and people in need of SPCA of Solano County’s help. Many chefs never know the guests for whom they plan, sear and sauté. Executive Chef of Paradise Valley Estates, Dwayne Scott, is a rare exception. Each day he sees, speaks with, and knows the intricate details in the lives of 500 diners. His guests are the residents of Paradise Valley Estates, a continuing care retirement community (CCRC) located in Fairfield, California. After crafting more than 700 meals each day, Dwayne and his culinary team enjoy a frontrow seat to scores of satisfied customers. “Their happiness is our reward,” said Dwayne. “Our residents are vocal about what they like and don’t like. Seeing their smiling faces truly makes our work worth it.” Dwayne, the community’s executive chef for ten years, leads a team of 26 professionals in designing, sourcing and preparing Paradise Valley Estates’ exceptional meals. “After all these years, we’ve grown to understand the preferences of our residents,” he shared. “On top of that, we try to mix things up. We incorporate seasonal

in a beautifully presented plate we’re proud to serve.” Creativity and a love of food led Dwayne to San Francisco’s California Culinary Academy, an affiliate of the world-renowned Le Cordon Bleu hospitality academy. It was the pinnacle of a working education that began with good old-fashioned elbow grease. “I started as a dishwasher and worked my way up through hotels and country clubs,” he

laughed. After graduating from the academy, Dwayne trained in Italy for three months before being hired by the California Culinary Academy as a chef instructor. Dwayne came to Paradise Valley Estates as executive chef in 2004 and has helped grow the community’s culinary program into an asset that residents say rivals the highest-rated local restaurants. “We believe in keeping the ingredients fresh and healthy, and that presentation is just as important,” he shared. “For example, many of our residents love filet mignon. So we explore that cut in a number of ways: grilled, seared, with unique sauces and even within

puff pastry.”

❝We believe in keeping the ingredients fresh and healthy, and that presentation is just as important,❞ The community’s many special events, workshops and galas are exciting challenges for the team, which, in addition to the executive chef, includes 16 cooks and 10 dishwashers. “Special events like our popular Chef’s Table are especially exciting to plan,” said Dwayne. “Those meals invite even more creativity

with ingredients and special preparations.” The community recently held an al fresco barbecue where visitors to the community enjoyed five grilled courses including sea scallops with corn salsa, an heirloom tomato salad with smoked mozzarella, grilled skirt steak, and caramelized grilled peaches with vanilla ice cream, raspberry sauce and roasted almonds. Chef Dwayne is thrilled when residents cite the community’s meals as one of the best reasons to live in the amenity-rich neighborhood. “It’s my name on the menu,” he said. “But, I have a great staff and they work very hard. I couldn’t do anything without them.”

Firefighters Save Lives Before Fire F

airfield firefighters are working to save lives even before a fire starts. The Fairfield Fire Department has been awarded a federal Fire Prevention & Safety grant to purchase and distribute smoke detectors to residents who are without them. These detectors come equipped with 10-year batteries, which should keep them in working order longer than many other detectors. “It is usually the smoke, not the fire, that overcomes most people during a fire event,” said Fire Chief Tony Velasquez. “Getting these detectors into the homes of our residents who need them will surely help with early notification of fires, and possibly save lives.” The firefighters made the first of these granted smoke detectors available through the Senior Home Assistance Repair Event during the fall. If you need smoke detectors for your home, please stop by Fire Administration at 1200 Kentucky Street, Mondays through Thursdays, from 8 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 5 p.m.

Fairfield Fire Department pursues the highest levels of fire and life safety services to minimize loss of life and property. Fire assists with disaster preparedness, fire prevention and education, fire suppression, hazardous materials/confined space rescue, operational fire permits, special events inspections, and State licensed residential care inspections.

in APRIL at the Western Railway Museum

Wine lovers and wildflower watchers can once again ride vintage trains at the Western Railway Museum. Each Saturday in April, the Museum will use its historic electric railway equipment on the Vintage Comet Wine Train. The train departs at 4pm for a 75-minute, 11-mile ride to take advantage of the beautiful late-afternoon light. Adult passengers 21+ sample and learn about four local wines from members of the Suisun Valley Wine Co-Op. Suisun Valley is the second oldest AVA in California (Napa is the first), and is the next major valley east of Napa. Best known for Petite Sirah, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon, Suisun Valley has been described by Sunset Magazine as "undiscovered and unpretentious, much as Napa was in the 1960s. Cool afternoon breezes from San Francisco
