Meditation Tips to Start Thinking About By Becca Pronchick

NO MATTER WHAT!

That simply is not true.

Most people who do not meditate regularly believe that everything else is more important than taking the time to meditate.

Once you have enjoyed the many benefits of a regular (daily) meditation practice, you will find everything else gets easier, calmer, and more joyful when you dedicate the time to your own practice.

Many Benefits of Meditation

Meditating with an open heart will bring you into alignment with your intuition and body wisdom.

Even a few minutes of relaxing and quieting your mind will provide much needed rest for your physical and mental well being. Your nervous system will be calmer, your thinking will be clearer, and your blood pressure reduced.

Meditation/Mindfulness Closing your eyes, focusing on your breath, and observing your thoughts helps to train your mind to stay in the present moment - rather than worrying about the future or regretting the past. Meditating with an open heart will bring you into alignment with your intuition and body wisdom. You will be better equipped to make healthy choices about your schedule, your food, exercise, rest, and play time.

Decision Making & Clarity One of the valuable gifts of meditation is not only relaxation and healing, but clarity and help with decision making. Once you are relaxed and centered and in touch with your inner wisdom, you can ask a simple question and listen with your heart for the answers. Rather than merely figuring out the answers

intellectually or seeking answers outside yourself, you will be able to gain wisdom and clarity from the Divine and a greater capacity than only your conscious mind. You may find this to be extremely helpful and effective for decisions about your health, for creativity with projects, or for planning events.

Vacaville's Premier Caregiving Agency (serving all of Solano County)

Simply ask for guidance with a question such as “What is the highest vision for my health?” And quietly listen to your intuition and body wisdom. You may receive images, words, or feelings. You may have new and exciting insights or inspiration to take action. Following through on these inspirations and insights creates powerful momentum for positive action and results.

Always Giving Thanks It is very helpful to include gratitude in your meditation practice. It feels very good, focuses your awareness on positive aspects and on what you desire, rather than feelings of separation from your dreams and wishes for good health, loving relationships, greater success, prosperity, and fun.

www.VisitingAngels.com/Vacaville

When you feel the desire to practice a little bit every day, consider seeking out a class or meditation group to help support you in your practice. There is great benefit, support and fun available when you practice with a group. I encourage you to be willing to try meditation for a few weeks or months. Then see if you notice any improvement in your sleep, your ability to concentrate, in your mental clarity, and overall happiness. Are you

50? Time to get tested and prevent colorectal cancer

(BPT) - When she was 55 years old, Valerie B. made a promise to a total stranger. It may have saved her life. “I was sitting in the doctor’s office for a mammogram,” the Atlanta woman says. “There was a lady there who said she recently learned she had colon cancer. I knew nothing about it; nobody had ever told me to go get a colon test done. That woman in the doctor’s office urged me to get tested. I promised her I would. And I did.” She made an appointment right away. During the test, Valerie’s doctor found and removed six polyps (abnormal growths) in her colon. Three were precancerous, meaning there was a good chance they could have turned into cancer if they had not been removed. “The doctor was really glad I was there,” she says. “He said ‘Why did you wait so long?’” Screening is recommended for men and women beginning at 50 and continuing

until 75. Among men and women combined, colorectal cancer is the second leading cancer killer in the United States. But it doesn’t have to be. Screening helps prevent the disease by finding polyps, so they can be removed before they ever turn into cancer. Polyps don’t always cause symptoms, so you may not know you have them. That is why getting a screening test is so important.

Screening is For 52-year-old Randy Talley, the path to screening was recommended for different, but the results were men and women similar. His doctor strongly beginning at 50 recommended that he get checked for colorectal cancer and continuing when he was 50. Polyps ran until 75. in his family - his mother had them - and both Randy and his mother had irritable bowel syndrome, a condition that can raise a person’s risk of getting colorectal cancer. Plus, he was at the age when screening is recommended. It turned out that Randy had five polyps, all in an early, noncancerous stage. They were removed. “This testing is recommended for a good reason,” the Washington, DC, resident says. “You either experience a little discomfort with the test now, or you could face something a lot worse later in life, if you get colon cancer. So if you’re 50 or older, my advice is to get

Prime Time Living 6

screened now. I am completely glad I got screened.” There are several screening test options. These include colonoscopy, high-sensitivity fecal occult blood testing, and sigmoidoscopy. If you’re 50 or older, talk to your doctor about which is right for you.

Camino Alto RESIDENCE CLUB

Valerie - now 60 - is a cheerleader for getting screened. “After my colonoscopy, all I did that year was talk to people and tell my story. I found that five family members over 50 weren’t tested. I begged them to go, and they all went.”

hey came to honor their loved ones, they came for the people they care for, and they came for all of those who are suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. They were among the 625 Solano County residents who came together to unite in a movement to reclaim the future for millions by participating in Solano County’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Raising close to $90,000, the Walk has inspired local businesses, friends, families, and individuals to form teams and raise funds to support the Alzheimer’s Association in providing care and support services to the 678,000 residents of California living with Alzheimer’s, while also contributing to advancing critically-needed research. Now in it’s third year, the 2015 Solano County Walk to End Alzheimer’s Planning Committee is actively preparing to raise more funds than ever before. While the Walk doesn’t take place until October,

registration is now open and the committee is encouraging everyone to lead a team, join a team, or volunteer. Marcia Nutter, Team Retention Chair, started a small Walk team in memory of her mom, but as time went on, her team has grown to include people outside of her family. In turn, she has inspired others to get involved and become advocates for the cause. She walks in honor of all of those who are fighting the disease, as well as raising critical funds to help advance research and expand education and support programs for families and caregivers.

The Solano County Walk to End Alzheimer’s will take place on October 24, 2015 at Harbor Plaza in Suisun City.

“Alzheimer’s is growing at an alarming rate and affects not only those diagnosed, but countless spouses, children, parents, family members, and friends,” said Walk Manager Ondine Boulter. “The Walk is a once-a-year opportunity for the community to come together, support one another, and raise awareness around Alzheimer’s and dementia.”

Wheels for the Winning!

The Jubilee Raffle’s top prize was so coveted last year, Solano Wine & Food Jubilee organizers have pledged to offer it again, thanks to a continuing collaboration with local auto dealer Rami Yanni. Yanni is general manager of three dealerships in Vacaville: Vacaville Nissan, Vacaville Dodge and Vacaville Buick GMC. Yanni has agreed to again make available either a brand-new 2015 Buick Encore or a 2015 Nissan Altima to the Grand Prize winner of the Jubilee Raffle.

The Solano Wine & Food Jubilee Raffle is a fund-raising opportunity for the programs of NorthBay Hospice & Bereavement.

Raffle tickets are $50 each, or buy two and get the third free. They can be purchased by calling (707) 646-3133. Tickets can also be purchased with a credit card by fax at (707) 646-3135, or in person at the NorthBay Healthcare Foundation office at 4500 Business Center Drive in Fairfield. Event and raffle tickets are also available at Jackson Medical Supply, on Main Street in downtown Vacaville.

Raffle tickets are $50 each, or buy two and get the third free. They can be purchased by calling (707) 646-3133. In addition to the choice of cars as a top prize, there will be $10,000 in cash awarded, as well, according to Wendy Jackson, raffle chair. There will be 12 winners of $125, 10 winners of $500, one winner of $1,000 and one $2,500 winner. Odds of winning something are about one in 100, she adds, as only 2,500 tickets will be sold. And, to make the deal even more enticing, raffle organizers are offering a “buy two, get one free” incentive.

The winning tickets will be drawn at the 28th Annual Solano Wine & Food Jubilee, set for April 25, 2015 at the Specialty Event Center, 300 Chadbourne Road in Fairfield. Ticket-holders need not be present to win, but those who do will experience Solano County’s finest opportunity to mingle and socialize while enjoying an elegant evening of wine, food and great music, all while benefitting a great cause – the programs of NorthBay Hospice

Red Wine

White Smiles By Rick of Forks, Corks, and Brews

Like many people, I love a glass or two of dark, yummy red wines. What I don’t like is looking in a mirror after a couple of glasses and seeing my previously white teeth turning an unflattering shade of purple.

Should I quickly brush my teeth to get rid of that purple stain? Should I just not smile for the next hour? Or what? Dental professionals recommend you to hold off with the brushing. Why? The acidity in wine weakens the enamel on your teeth, making them extra-sensitive to the scratchy strokes of a toothbrush. To protect your teeth, wipe the stains away with a damp piece of gauze and wait at least an hour before brushing so that your saliva has time to rebalance the pH in your mouth.

=#<

To help alleviate some of the purpling… try these tips. Brush and rinse well before you drink your red wine as wine sticks to the plaque on your teeth. Eliminating some of the plaque will give the red wine less surface to turn purple.

Drink plenty of water between sips of wine. If you drink sparkling water, this helps rinse away stains more quickly or more efficiently.

Snack on hard cheese as this helps increase saliva production. That, in turn, balances your mouth’s pH and adheres to enamel, protecting your teeth from some of the acid in wine and its corrosive effects.

Remember to brush and floss and before going to bed.

=#< Also remember, the polyphenols in red wine actually block the ability of the bacteria that causes tooth-decay to stick to your teeth. So you could eat cheese, drink wine, sip water…and repeat. Enjoy! Prime Time Living 24

May is Mental Health Month: Help Reduce Stigma

By Dr. Mark Fry, Ph.D, PEAS Psychologist

S

tigma is when someone views you in a negative way because you have a distinguishing characteristic or personality trait that’s thought to be, or actually may be, a disadvantage. Unfortunately, negative attitudes and beliefs toward people who have a mental health conditions are common.

17% of people will suffer from depression within their lifetime. And those with serious medical illnesses have a 50% probability of developing depression. Stigma concerning a mental health condition can lead to discrimination; one may even judge themselves. Some harmful effects of stigma can include: reluctance to seek help; lack of understanding by family, friends, co-workers; bullying, physical violence, harassment; or health insurance that doesn’t adequately cover your mental health treatment. This is significant since the National Institute of Health estimates that 17% of people will suffer from depression within their lifetime. And those with serious medical illnesses have a 50% probability of developing depression. The World Health

Prime Time Living 26

Organization predicts that by 2020 unipolar depression will be associated with the #1 disease burden in the world; this means that depression will have the largest financial impact of any disease/disorder in the world. With effected numbers like these, surely a negative stigma cannot last indefinitely.

Here are some ways to deal with stigma: ❱ Get treatment. Don’t let the fear of being labeled with a mental illness prevent you from getting help ❱ Don’t let stigma create self-doubt and shame. It’s not a matter of personal weakness. Treatment can help you gain self-esteem and confidence ❱ Don’t isolate yourself, reach out to people you trust ❱ Don’t equate yourself with your illness; You are NOT “a bipolar”, you have “bipolar disorder”

Other’s judgments almost always come from a lack of understanding. Learning to accept your condition and recognizing what you need to do to treat it, seeking support, and helping educate others can make a big difference.
