message from the On behalf of City Council, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the Prince George Chamber of Commerce 2017 Source Directory Member Guide. Driven by the momentum of a record setting year in 2016, Prince George continued to experience solid growth and investment through 2017 and the Conference Board of Canada projects the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s GDP to continue to increase through 2018. Highlights of the past year include a continuing strong private sector investment in construction as 91% ($106.3 million) of residential and non-residential building permits were derived from that sector. The value of all building permits issued in 2017 was $116.8 million, bringing the total value of permits issued in the past two years to nearly one quarter of a billion dollars. Our annual employment increased to a rate of 67.0%, 5% higher than the provincial employment rate, while unemployment fell to 6.2% compared to 6.5% in 2016. Nearly 500,000 passengers passed through the Prince George Airport, and the City saw a 26% increase in the number of business licenses issued (2,054 vs. 1,624 in 2016). As a service and supply hub, Prince George businesses provide products and services locally and export goods and services to companies across Canada and around the world. Welcome to the 2018/2019 edition of the Prince George Chamber of Commerce Source Membership Directory. I am honored to be elected for my first term as President. Our business community is vibrant and poised to take advantage of new opportunities and to address new challenges in the political, environmental and social climates. I am looking forward to supporting you through the Chamber as you navigate these waters. This directory features a list of our distinguished members, categorized by products and services they offer. Our membership is made up of businesses which have set standards and demonstrated achievements that have contributed to the prosperity and business development in Prince George. Continuing to build and strengthen partnerships and alliances within our community is also an important goal for the Chamber. We will continue to focus on our strong relationships and alliances with the City of Prince George, the University of Northern BC, the College of New Caledonia and key industry partners. We are also focused on developing a united voice for Northern British Columbia. Our goal is to strengthen relationships and develop strategic alliances with other Northern Chambers to help our voice be heard by political bodies that are increasingly dominated by the interests and concerns of the lower mainland. Todd oversees Chamber operations and is accountable to the Board of Directors. He prepares and implements the Chamber’s strategic policies in collaboration with the Board, and manages the Chamber’s business and ﬁnancial affairs. Todd is the primary voice for the Chamber to the public and responsible for overseeing all Chamber communications.

Tianna is responsible for coordinating our Speaker Series luncheons, workshops, Business After 5 socials and Coffee Hours. This includes selecting topics of interests to the membership and planning all event details. She also manages the Chamber’s social media channels.

Barbara Otter

Erin is the first point of contact for people who call or visit the Chamber office. She coordinates all office supply orders, inventory and mail outs. She manages membership payments, Chamber event registrations and is responsible for completing all bookkeeping tasks. Erin also coordinates the PG Showcase Tours and runs the registration table at our events.

Barbara manages and facilitates large specially funded projects that are administered by the Chamber. These projects include: the Carbon Reduction Project and the Collaborations Project. Barbara is not only the main point of contact overseeing these projects but she also liaises between the Chamber, post-secondary institutions, funding agencies and industry; recruits business participation; and manages all project promotion and reporting.

The PG Chamber of Commerce strives to connect, engage and enhance the quality of life in our community by providing opportunities for businesses to succeed. The Chamber is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors elected by the members. We are managed by a professional staff of six. The work of the Chamber is carried out by staff and volunteer committees and task forces. Together, we work hard to support our membership. We speak on matters affecting our members, research business issues, encourage investment, work to broaden the tax base, support crime prevention programs, recognize the importance of education in providing employment skills, are aware of environmental and cultural issues and maintain contact and work with politicians to improve the manner and method of doing business in Prince George. For newcomers, we are a primary resource for researching and understanding our community.

rince George health providers say the provincial government’s plan to provide free universal coverage of a medical abortion will improve access to reproductive health services in remote areas of northern B.C. The B.C. Ministry of Health announced on Tuesday that, as of Jan. 15, Mifegymiso will be covered under MSP at no cost. The drug is an alternative to surgical abortion and has been listed by the World Health Organization as “essential medicine.” Mifegymiso has been covered by PharmaCare since July 11, 2017, but the out-ofpocket cost for individuals without PharmaCare is currently approximately $300. The drug can be prescribed by a doctor prior to nine weeks into the pregnancy, but patients must first undergo an ultrasound to ensure that the pregnancy is not ectopic, meaning outside the uterus. Women’s health advocates have applauded the | 2017 | Explore THE NORTH | 1by the B.C. Ministry of Health, which they decision say offers access to the “gold standard” for safe medical termination of pregnancies. The province will now join Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia in offering universal access to Mifegymiso. According to Heather Smith, a family doctor who specializes in women’s reproductive health, reducing the cost of the drug will require fewer trips to Prince George or Vancouver for patients and will improve access to health services for women in rural communities in the north.
