IYMEETING

at the end I realized what I should be doing.

On Monday evening Emily and Paige met in the mac lab, located in Montgomery Hall of St. Mary’s College of Maryland. From the beginning, the meeting was very productive and exciting! In order to follow the assignment properly the girls first reviewed the email from Professor Colby, which described his expectations of the encounter. Once they felt comfortable with the requirements Paige and Emily took a look at Paige’s remix of Emily’s Seeing Sound masterpiece. Paige felt like Emily was skeptical of the simplistic approach to the remix. Emily really liked the way the way that Paige had edited her pictures. Emily began to ask questions about Paige’s stylistic choices. It was then that Paige described her creative process; Paige wanted to use one of Emily’s original pictures and from the beginning had been keen on Emily’s photograph of the coy fish. She began by editing the pictures for color alternatives, there were 10 to 15 versions of the picture, and many had been cropped and rotated. While rotating the picture Paige began noticing curves in the bodies of the fish that complemented each other. The lines became very attractive and exemplified the markings of the fish and the texture in the scales. Paige did not add text to the remix and there was not text in the original. She felt like the pictures offered so much mystery and feeling that it wasn’t necessary. But based on some excellent feedback Paige decided to take the project a little further. Before she had thought of incorporating a Ferris wheel, something that came to mind when seeing the curves of the fish. The fish also reminded her of a carnival game and the contrast of colors struck a narrative for her. When creating the final spread Paige imagined a colorless carnival, a dirty place of greed, filth and materialism, it’s loud and the men drool when they yell. The fish pictured live in a pond down a dirt road where the sun shines through thick green trees that create an archway as you walk down the path. When Paige finished she felt much better about the project and

was really glad that Emily was able to push her to do something more than what existed. Paige loved working on the project and taking the chances that Emily suggested. Now it was Emily’s turn to present and Paige thought she did a fantastic job! She was very impressed by Emily’s book, her favorite aspect being that she incorporated both projects into one. The poem that Emily chose fit well with the progression of photographs and extracted emotion that had not been there before. Emily told Paige why she chose the poem and then she too told the tale of her creative process... (See the magnificent write-up posted by Emily). At the end of the meeting Paige and Emily decided that they should quit school, photography octopi and drive really fast on motorized vehicles; it was great.
