Words of Welcome The Peace

The peace of the Lord be with you. And also with you.

Call to Worship The Magi waited and watched, knowing something wondrous would be happening. We waited for the birth of Jesus; now something wondrous is about to take root. The darkness that invaded all lives was banished by the light of that star. The darkness that surrounds us is gone! Let us celebrate the bright shining of God's love in our lives. Let us become those who will bring the light of God's love to others. AMEN. {by Nancy C. Townley}

Hymn “Hark the Herald Angels Sing” Hark! the herald angels sing: "Glory to the newborn King; Peace on earth, and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled!" Joyful, all ye nations, rise, join the triumph of the skies; With angelic hosts proclaim: "Christ is born in Bethlehem!"

UMH #220

Refrain: Hark! the herald angels sing, Glory to the new-born King." Christ, by highest heaven adored, Christ, the everlasting Lord; Late in time, behold him come, offspring of a virgin's womb. Veiled in flesh the Godhead see! Hail the incarnate Deity! Pleased as man with us to dwell; Jesus, our Emmanuel! {Refrain} Hail the heaven-born Prince of Peace! Hail the Sun of Righteousness! Light and life to all he brings, risen with healing in his wings. Mild he lays his glory by, born that we no more may die, Born to raise us from the earth, born to give us second birth. {Refrain} Prayer of Confession God of glory, you sent Jesus among us as the light of the world, to reveal your love for all people. We confess that our sin and pride hide the brightness of your light. We turn away from the poor; we ignore cries for justice; we do not strive for peace. In your mercy, cleanse us of our sin, and pour out the gifts of your Spirit, that, forgiven and renewed, we may show forth your glory shining in the face of Jesus Christ. {silence for prayer}

Words of Assurance Light has come to you. Your light has come and it has erased the darkness. Now we can walk and work in the light. You are loved by God and called to God's service. AMEN. {by Austin D. Hill and Nancy C. Townley}

Sacrament of Holy Communion The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. . . . And so with your people on earth and all the company of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: Holy, holy, holy, Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. . . . On the night in which he gave himself up for us, he took bread, gave thanks to you, broke the bread, gave it to his disciples, and said:

“Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” When the supper was over, he took the cup, gave thanks to you, gave it to his disciples, and said: “Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. . . . And so in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ, we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving as a holy and living sacrifice, in union with Christ’s offering for us, as we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again. . . . Through your son Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit in your holy church, all honor is yours, almighty God, now and forever, Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory forever. Amen. Prayer After Receiving Eternal God, we give you thanks for this holy mystery in which you have given yourself to us. Grant that we may go into the world in the strength of your Spirit, to give ourselves for others, in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

And Scatter To Be in the World Hymn

“Go Tell It on the Mountain”

UMH #251

Refrain: Go tell it on the mountain, over the hills and everywhere, Go, tell it on the mountain that Jesus Christ is born. While shepherds kept their watching over silent flocks by night, Behold, throughout the heavens there shone a holy light. {Refrain} The shepherds feared and trembled when lo! above the earth, Rang out the angel chorus that hailed our Savior's birth. {Refrain} Down in a lowly manger the humble Christ was born, And God sent us salvation that blessed Christmas morn. {Refrain} Benediction Postlude

Human Relations Day Special Offering

Today

Our January Communion Offering benefits the United Methodist Special Sunday: Human Relations Day. Giving on Human Relations Day nurtures at-risk youth, strengthens communities’ self-improvement efforts, and advocates for the oppressed. Let’s become more comfortable with being outside our social circles than we are within them. Let’s be more like Jesus, together, on Human Relations Day. You can contribute today by clicking here and designating "Human Relations Day" in the comments. You can also mail a check to Princeton UMC, 7 Vandeventer, Princeton, NJ, 08542, or drop your offering in the offering plate.

Baptism of Our Lord Sunday

January 9 | 10:00 am

Come! Remember your baptism and be thankful! We will kick off our “Powerful Purpose” sermon series January 9th with a baptism celebration. Start reflecting on your own baptism. What do you remember about it? Where were you? Who was there with you?

Newcomers Class

Begins January 23 | 11:30 am

This 5-week class beginning in the new year offers an opportunity to learn more about Princeton UMC and consider how you might get more plugged into the many ministries happening in the life of our church. At the end of the five weeks, participants will be invited to join into membership at PUMC. Email Pastor Jenny if you want to participate. Have someone in mind who you think should join? Extend them a special invitation!

Confirmation Class

Begins January 9 | 10:00 am

Do you have an 8th grader or high schooler who would like to take a next step in their faith journey? We hope they can join our next Confirmation Class, beginning this January! Please email Evangeline (evangeline@princetonumc.org) to sign up or ask questions!
