THE PRINCIPALITY OF NOMADONIA This portfolio should be read in conjunction with the associated thesis document titled The Rough Guide to the Principality of Nomadonia.

The charm of nomadic life is its freedom from care, its unrestrained liberty of action, and the proud self-reliance of one who is absolutely in turn, suffers the penalties that Nature visits upon him for every slip of mind or bungling of his hand. Carrying with him, as he does, in a few small bundles, all that he needs to provide food and shelter in any land, habited or uninhabited, the camper is lord of himself and of his surroundings.

WHOLE EARTH CATALOG, 1968 - NOMADICS This catalogue was seen as a collection of tools for to be utilised with a ‘do-it-yourself ’ attitude. It itself is handmade. A direct reflection of the times, illustrating a mentality of individualism and self-determination. During the sixties there was a general distrust in governmental institutions. People seeked independence and to have more control on themselves as individuals. From this many countercultures emerged as different representations of this new independence. Many of these were based around the ideology of the Nomad.

Aeterna Excitus - Forever in Motion Unius, Multis in Locis - One Nation, Many Places

The Principality of Nomadonia, a self-determined Sovereign State recognises that traditional Nation-States founded on a fixed geographical location are anachronistic. Globalisation and the increasing development of personal mobility through technological advancement has lead to a shift away from historic static representations of cities and countries. Nomadonia seeks to provide an environment that meets the demands of a progressively hyper-connected world beyond that determined purely by place of birth. The legal nomadic territory peacefully operates within the suburbs between non-transient cities of the United Kingdom as to limit its interference with existing infrastructures. Initially starting on the outskirts of London to take advantage of its economic position, Nomadonia looks to strengthen communications with the capital. Derived in response to a time of austerity, the Principality of Nomadonia has evolved and broken away from the traditional city. It acknowledges the need to supply a growing population with housing and an environment which is suited to the current technological climate. Past concepts of mobility were restricted by the issue of energy source. Nomadonia attempts to counteract this through the utilisation of horse as both a mode of transport and as a means of power generation. The population may fluctuate and disperse as dictated by the prerequisites of Nomadonia and its political, social and economic contexts. The nation may only ever be ‘complete’ for a short period of time as it exists in a perpetual state of assembly and disassembly. A ‘no trace policy’ is adopted to ensure when the city decides to uproot, vacate and move to an alternative site it leaves no residue or signs of existence. Article 1 of the 1933 Montevideo Convention on Rights and Duties of States defines a State as possessing a permanent population, a defined territory, a government, and the capacity to enter into relations with other States. The Principality achieves all of the mentioned in accordance with the Declarative Theory of Statehood and in an act of self-determination wishes to be addressed as a nation. Citizenship is granted once possession of a horse and an understanding of their maintenance is proved. Individuals are responsible in the compliance of national law, upkeep of public buildings and personal dwellings. Each man is liable for his horse. A similar structure to a traditional constitutional monarchy is adopted Acknowledgement is given to the following international treaties: Convention on Cybercrime (2001), Patent Law Treaty (2000), Kyoto Protocol (1997), WIPO Copyright Treaty (1996), Treaty on Open Skies (1992), Schengen Agreement (1985) & Moon Treaty (1979). We invite anyone of a similar agenda to join our principality.

PRINCIPALITY FRAMEWORK In this provisional document, the monarchy of Nomadonia seek to outline the key principles that have lead the inception of this new city typology. As this movement is in its infancy, this document is likely the undergo multiple revisions before a fully established constitution can be formally issued and signed.

THE PRINCIPALITY OF NOMADONIA

NOTES NOTES

POLICIES

SOCIAL STRUCTURES

Multiple policies operate within the city and are primarily enforced by the Sheriffs.

Equality is the main ethos of the city. Land and provisions are equally distributed. Rotation of dwelling location prevents stagnation of residential districts whilst the non-use of money reduces scope for wealth hierarchies

PUBLIC FASCILITIES

FRAMEWORK DOC.

TECHNOLOGIES

CITIZEN

Other than the open forest spaces and central community zone are the royal gardens, horse monument and central zone.

All operations are governed by the 2013 Constitution, preliminarily outlined in the 2014 framework document.

Along with the Horse, the very latest in wireless, personal and miniaturised technologies are at the forefront of the nations agenda.

Those from Nomadonia are ‘Neo-nomads’ that ride horseback, are at ease and well educated in the latest technologies

TECH-DUST

POPULATION

EDUCATION

SKILLED LABOUR

Small Pegasus like bots operate within the city to maintain hygiene and ensure that the citizens close proximity to horses is compatible.

The city masterplan is designed to accommodate approximately 100,000 with a capacity tolerance of ± 10% due to seasonal variation and consequences of location.

Basic education consisting of a wide curriculum is provided for. Particular attention is attributed to equestrian sciences and ‘online industries’.

All manual devices within the principality are designed to accommodate the low skilled worker so that everyone is able to maintain their own dwelling etc

CAMP FIRES

LOCATION

Nomadonia’s version of the meeting room. The primitive gathering of people can now be transformed into a productive working environment through the utilisation of wireless technologies.

The whereabouts of the Nation depends of its needs and the current social, political and economical climate of its contexts.

THE PRINCIPALITY OF NOMADONIA

COMMUNICATION

HORSE HIGHWAYS

HORSE

SUSTENANCE

Communication between neighboring cities is either carried out wirelessly or by horse delivered message. All official correspondence is overseen by the embassy.

The axis of the city allows for direct transportation of goods in and out. They also serve to provide a focal point of production within the city, housing primary sites of industry such as energy plants and infrastructures.

The horse is an integral component of the city, similar to circumstances in Victorian era of London and New York. Approximately 62,500 are present in Nomadonia.

Along with imported goods, horse meat is part of the traditional staple diet.

CROPS

ARCHITECTURE

TRANSPORT

ECONOMY

MONARCHY

Small amounts of crops are grown in vertical hydroponic farms. These are primarily for personal consumption as the majority of food stuffs are imported.

Due to the temporal nature of the Nation, its architecture must to be suited to these conditions. Some of these attributes include being lightweight, mobile, easily assembled and adaptable.

The horse is not only used to transport the population around the city but also to transfer to the city to an alternative location by pulling architectural components in specially designed carts.

The technology available to the population of Nomadonia allows all economic operations to be performed wirelessly.

The King of the Principality resides in the Palace within the central monument and sits and heads a constitutional monarchy system

LAW ENFORCEMENT

The laws and policies of the city and enforced not only on a community level but also by the Sheriffs, who on horseback, patrol the lands.

NOTES

GOVERNMENT

The nation operates under the monarchy and all representatives are elected into their respective posts. Candidates may not be from a political background but instead experts in other fields in a form of technocracy

NOTES

CITY FUNCTIONS To be read in conjunction with framework document and portfolio drawings. Loose regulatory documents will provide direction to those that are involved within the start up of Nomadonia and further renditions will follow subsequent to the establishment of governmental structures etc.

PHASE 1

Situating itself within close proximity of the capital, Nomadonia seeks to exploit its economic power. Operating within a similar outlining framework to that of the New Towns Act of 1946, the city has options of more open lands within the suburbs as opposed to the congested urban structure of existing cities.

PHASE 2 +

Future expansion beyond the geographical boundaries of the United Kingdom may be deemed necessary. Nomadonia moves to its resources and if these are not available within the UK, will relocate elsewhere. Although connected on a global scale through wireless networks, the migration and welfare of its inhabitants takes precedent. In the event of this a secondary framework based on the current will be required to ensure that the features of Nomadonia can be adapted to alternative contexts and that the movement to another country is sustainable.

LOCATION FRAMEWORK Territories can exist at many scales, can be represented by physical boundaries, or simply just arbitrary lines drawn on maps. The conventional definition, capacity and flexibility of a country is being tested through multiple factors including globalisation. A masterplan for a nomadic country must consist of a time factor to provide clarity on its location.

NEW TOWNS The current government is establishing plans to increase the scope of new towns to meet the current national housing needs. The belt between Oxford and Cambridge has been earmarked as a potential area to develop feasibility studies for such new sites such as its close proximity to the capital.

At the preliminary planning phase past precedents were taken into consideration in order to provide precedent to scale and density and provide estimate requirements such as the removal of horse waste. London, 1893 - 300000 Horses : 47000000 People (Ratio of 1:16) 100000 population = 62500 Horses Horses produce 7-15kg of waste & 1 litre of urine per day 625000 horses produce 437500-937500kg of waste and 62500 liters of urine per day

SCALE The scale of the first rendition of the Principality of Nomadonia has used frameworks that are already in place as precedents. The New Towns Act of 1949 outlined the needs for the UK supply new towns to support the growing population. The size of the nation will determine its population requirements and define its movement parameters.

TOPOGRAPHY AND DENSITY The Aylesbury Vale District of Buckinghamshire offers an easy setting to which Nomadonia can be overlaid due to its relatively flat topography and low density of existing structures. Locating itself in a location that reduces the level of disturbance to adjacent communities, the masterplan sets its extremities to existing boundaries such as railway lines and villages.

CITY FRINGE Where the city edge meets its context. Nomadonia carefully selects its site as to reduce its impact on its environment resulting in the city being stationed in rural / suburban areas of the United Kingdom. Where possible it seeks to locate itself adjacent to existing boundaries such as that of a forest or rail network.

ADAPTATION OF THE EDGE Nomadonia carefully selects its site in relation to economic factors as suggested in its manifesto, but also to reduce the level of disturbance to the existing suburbs. Its circular plan is its ‘ideal’ state but at the edges a level of adaptability is required to adjust to certain scenarios. An adjacent rail network cannot be moved as simply as a small hamlet, therefore the city breaks away from its masterplan at its fringe to incorporate existing elements..

Prior to the installation of the architectures of the nomadic city, this geotextile is applied as a ground treatment. The ground surface is skimmed and rolls of the matting are placed with the surface then reapplied for coverage. Universal sockets allow users to ‘plug-in’ at any point across the mat and have access to a range of services provided via the primary hub. When the geotextiles use is finished it is simply rolled up and taken away.

PLUG-IN GEOTEXTILE Nomadonia seeks to provide its citizens with access to its online services via a flexible network of geotextiles. Allowing users to plug-in their hardwares at any point along its surface, bringing together a notion of ‘powerpoint homesteading’ where technological appliances are carried to their point of use. The nomadic lifestyle of those from Nomadonia is further supported by such technological interventions.

ABSTRACT

The use of this saddle extends beyond the currents uses or attributes of the traditional. Advanced features provide technological representations suited to a modern climate whilst maintaining a largely conventional aesthetic. An antenna fixed to the rear of the saddle allows the rider to easily connected a multitude of wireless networks. A pocket to the rear provides protection to the standard issue of the Rough Guide to the Principality. Traditional materials such as leather are hybridised with more lightweight alternatives such as carbon fibre. A head up display allows the rider to have access to a number of features as described in patent 11,004. An integrated life support and monitoring systems sits within the side sections of the saddle that provides the rider with the horses vital statistics and health provisions.

ABSTRACT

OF

This systems seeks to provide a fast, economical and hygienic collection of wet and dry horse waste from a variety of terrains. Horse driven, the systems works by being pulled over the site of the waste and being pulled up into the large storage bags by an array of scoops and suction devices to the underside. Two scales are available, both of which rely on the same technologies; one for domestic use and one for much larger applications.

WASTE COLLECTORS The scale of the city in combination with the high horse population produces vast quantities of waste. In order to maintain a clean environment and also to gather the waste in order to turn it into energy, Nomadonia employs two sizes of horse drawn collector. One at a domestic scale, the other for the wide horse highways.

THE PRINCIPALITY OF NOMADONIA

ARRIVAL OF NOMADONIA The inflation of the monument sets out the centerpoint which the city surrounds. The solid hooves are brought first to form a base and house the giant fans that inflate the airship like horse. During this process the city begins to establish itself in reference to the masterplan. ‘Dummy’ structures are erected to temporarily mimic the cities architectures.

THE PRINCIPALITY OF NOMADONIA

BASECAMP Supplying the basic energy and communication needs for the moving nation. These needs are determined by the requirements of the nomadic population and how they operate. These are a sustained wireless internet connection, small power supplies and charging stations and drinking water.

THE PRINCIPALITY OF NOMADONIA

VIEWING AND WASTE TOWERS With the majority of structures within the city not exceeding a single storey, viewing towers are scattered along the primary access routes to aid navigation. Waste towers are modifications of the viewing platforms, but provide a height which allow excess horse waste to be gathered in mounds.

100 ROOM HOUSE Consisting of a single room and an adjacent wet room, the homestead is able to re-configure to mimic traditional spaces such as the living room via a series of fold-out, drop-down and pop-up accessories that are integrated into the walls. The highly serviced dwelling also utilises the wall cavities to house a complex array of pipes and wires. The water pool is located adjacent to the window to provide a view of the North star at night.

THE PRINCIPALITY OF NOMADONIA

HOMESTEADS OF NOMADONIA The homestead, a microcosm of the city. A hybrid of primitive and latest domestic technologies. The horse, the driving force of the city, is integrated into the domestic scene. Stability to the technological shell is achieved through the use of local resources such as trees, water and soil.

INFLATABLE HORSE MONUMENT AND PALACE From the outside it appears as a simple balloon type object, however inside a complete array ballonets and tension cables perform to keep the monument upright as well as provide movement to the head and neck. Suspended from the underbelly is the palace of Nomadonia that provides unprecedented vistas across the four horse highways of the city.

HOOF DETAIL The hooves house the primary servicing for the inflatable horse monument whilst also act as anchors to the hold it in situ. In each of the front hooves are narrow staircases that provide access to the underbelly of the monument. Being one of the more prominent features of the monument, the hooves often go ‘on tour’ when the city is in transportation to advertise the Principality of Nomadonia as an avant-garde city typology.

THE PRINCIPALITY OF NOMADONIA

SAME MONUMENT, DIFFERENT PLACE The centerpiece to the principality is 100m tall inflatable horse that holds the palace. Inspired by NASA technologies such as Sateloons, part of project Echo in the 1960’s, the aluminium coated Mylar plastic inflatable structure is supported by a series of internal ballonets and tension cables as well as exterior guy ropes that provide additional stability.

THE PRINCIPALITY OF NOMADONIA

PALACE VIEWING BALCONY Suspended beneath the inflatable horse is the palace of the Principality. The external balcony provides unprecedented vantage points allowing views down each of the four Horse Highways. As some of the most active parts of the city, these highways hold the primary sites of industry and production whilst connecting the Principality with the suburbs of the United Kingdom.

THE PRINCIPALITY OF NOMADONIA

HORSE HIGHWAY AND SALOONS The saloon, central to the daily life of the Nomadonian, sits along the four Horse Highways. Like the homestead, they merge both the primitive and latest tech and provide a space for the modern day neo-nomad to operate ‘online’. To the back of these are campfires that are Nomadonia’s equivalent to the boardroom.

THE PRINCIPALITY OF NOMADONIA

CAMPFIRE The nomad, the primitive, the latest tech, the horse. Roaming amongst the de-restricted layout of the city, the Nomadonian operates his latest tech, powered by horse waste, wherever he chooses. The plug-in geotextile mat provides additional access a multitude of facilities as provided by the city.

THE PRINCIPALITY OF NOMADONIA

EVOLUTION OF NOMADONIA Although a nomadic tribe, Nomadonia may choose to reside in a single location for a number of years if conditions allow. Such is the nature of this new community, the architectural structures adapt and accumulate objects from their surroundings by means of repair or personalisation, increasing diversity amongst individuals. Some homesteads may become abandoned while others may stay the same after good maintenance.
