The World Environment Day
T
he World Environment Day (WED) was established in 1972 by the United Nations Assembly as a yearly celebration held on June 5th every year. The objective of WED is to raise global awareness for positive environmental actionable initiatives that would protect nature and the planet. It is currently celebrated in over 100 countries and over 500 cities globally. The Word Environment Day serves as a day of “reminders” - a reminder to the world to prioritize the environment; and give back to the environment through individual and collective actions that sustain the environment. It is a day to draw attention in solidarity between individuals and organizations; and within communities and governments to raise a voice in support of sustaining the environment. It is in line with the objectives of WED that Anambra State decided to celebrate the 2106 World Environment Day in Awka from Sunday June 5th through Monday June 6 t h 2016, tagged Anambra State World Environment Day 2016 (ANSWED-2016)
Without soils we cannot sustain life on earth and where soil is lost it cannot be renewed on a human timeline. The current escalating rate of soil degradation threatens the capacity of future generations to meet their needs - UN News Centre.
ANSWED-2016 is a call to the people of Anambra State to come together and join forces to address critical environmental challenges in the State; - call to incentivize action for mitigation and adaptation against the erosion and other environmental challenges faced by the State; through a collective action involving individuals, private and public sectors; to raise a Collective Ambition for the State.
In addition, the first ever Status of World Soil Resources Report is set to be launched on 5 December 2015 – recently designated UN World Soil Day. The UN has also declared 2015 as the International Year of Soils to shine the international spotlight on the challenges. - UN News Centre
The focus of “Our Collective Ambition” is to call on the people of Anambra State to jointly examine the environmental threat to the livelihood of the people of the State: our land mass, our agriculture, our forests and our enviro-social conditions; and then adopt a common agenda which would be collectively actioned as “Our Collective Ambition”
