Foreword We all know that there is a financial crisis, not just in the UK but throughout the world. The voluntary and social sector have seen considerable cuts in their government funding but charities are also suffering from loss of donations as people tighten their belts. Despite these reductions in funding, the voluntary sector is more important than ever. The services provided by medical welfare charities are in more demand than ever and has now been accepted that the country could not possibly function without them. Britain’s population is living longer and the diseases that affect older people are becoming more prolific. Dementia, Alzheimers, Arthritis, etc are now common in the increasingly elderly population. In many cases, they wish to stay in their own homes but lack of mobility means they are physically less able to cope leading to an increasing need for help at home and befrienders. Where can people turn to for help? There have always been people prepared to give their time for other good causes, animal welfare, village communities, international poverty, youth clubs, etc but less known are those who help offenders, drug addicts, single parents, low-income families struggling to cope.

Could you help? What help is available to those in need? If you have a particular need, then you may find suitable local help within this booklet. If you can spare a few hours and one of the organisations listed here is involved with a cause with which you have an affinity, then please get in touch and offer your services. If you are feeling benevolent, then most of the charities here are desperate for cash to help fund their work. Please help if you possibly can. Charities have limited budgets for promotion. They need a high profile, otherwise nobody will know they exist and they will then get no support but if they spend their income on promoting themselves, some supporters will criticise them for “wasting money. This booklet is aimed at helping raise the profile of those organisations operating within the county of Staffordshire in order to make people aware of their existence, the help the organisations can offer, and the need that they have for assistance.

CHILDREN & YOUTH CHARITIES

Barnardo’s ➜

WHAT WE DO: Barnardo’s children’s charity is working at the heart of local communities helping children and families tackle some of today’s most urgent childcare problems. Once better known for running traditional orphanages, Barnardo’s no longer runs homes but operates dozens of projects across Staffordshire and UKwide. We work with 200,000 children and young people each year. Our local Regional Office covering the North West and North Midlands area is located in Liverpool. Work includes specialist services supporting vulnerable children affected by poverty, abuse, sexual exploitation and disability; young people who fulfil the demanding role of a carer; homeless young people and those leaving the care system and making the move towards independence. We also recruit and train families who can offer a loving home to adopt or foster a child. It costs a great deal to sustain our current level of work for diverse communities across Staffordshire. There are lots of ways you can be part of our local support. Our fundraising and volunteer team would to hear from you if you can spare a little time or perhaps organise a fundraising event. You can also donate goods or visit our charity’s retail shops, or consider leaving us a legacy in your will. We believe in children - no matter who they are, what they have done or what they have been through.

HOW TO CONTACT US: To show you believe in children visit www.barnardos.org.uk or call Barnardo’s West region on 0151 488 1100.

CHILDREN & YOUTH CHARITIES

NSPCC ➜

WHAT WE DO: The NSPCC is the leading children's charity fighting to end child abuse in the UK and Channel Islands. We help children who’ve been abused to rebuild their lives, protect those at risk, and find the best ways of preventing abuse from ever happening. When a child needs a helping hand, we’ll be there. When parents are finding it tough, we’ll help. When laws need to change, or governments need to do more, we won’t give up until things improve. As well as our free, 24-hour helpline for adults with a concern about a child (0800 800 500), we have 40 service centres across the UK which offer a combination of services to children, families and professionals. In Staffordshire we run a service centre in Stoke that focuses on helping children who have been or are at risk of being sexually abused, children in care, neglected children and children who have a parent who has drink or drug problems. As well providing ChildLine, the free, 24-hour confidential helpline service for children and young people on 0800 1111 or www.childline.org.uk , the NSPCC also runs the ChildLine School Service throughout Staffordshire. The ground-breaking service uses specially trained volunteers to talk to primary school children about abuse. We use an assembly or workshop to help under 11s understand abuse and recognise it if it occurs.

HOW TO CONTACT US: If you would like to find out more about the NSPCC, including volunteer opportunities, please visit www.nspcc.org.uk or contact the Midlands fundraising team on midlandsappeals@nspcc.org.uk Registered charity number 216401. Cancer Research ➜

WHAT WE DO: Cancer Research UK is the only charity fighting all 200 different types of Cancer. We are the world’s leading cancer charity dedicated to saving lives through research and our vision is to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured. In the 1970s, just a quarter of people survived for 10 years or more following a diagnosis of cancer. Today, thanks to research, that has increased to half. Our ambition now is to accelerate progress and see threequarters of patients surviving cancer within the next 20 years. Our research is entirely funded by the public and thanks to your generosity our scientists, doctors and nurses are leading the world in discovering new ways to fight the disease. We fund a broad spectrum of research, from understanding what causes cancer and how it develops, to developing new treatments, diagnostic tests and screening techniques. Today, survival rates for some cancers are over 75%, including breast, skin and testicular cancers. But there’s so much more we need to do. There are lots of different ways that you can support Cancer Research UK throughout Staffordshire. We have several fundraising groups who help us organise events throughout the year and they’re always looking for new members. Whether you want to fundraise alone or as part of a group, please do get in touch. Sooner or later we will beat cancer, let’s make it sooner.

HOW TO CONTACT US: Check out our website at www.cancerresearchuk.org.uk or contact your local fundraising manager Paula Scaife on paula.scaife@cancer.org.uk or on 07748760358

The Rainbow Ecotherapy Project ➜

WHAT WE DO: We are a new project based only minutes from the city centre yet in a peaceful rural setting on the edge of the moors. We aim to provide activities involving rescued animals, nature and horticulture for therapeutic benefit. We welcome individuals or groups who feel they could benefit from involvement in the project. We strive to promote equality for all and to create a non judgemental and supportive environment. The project is free to attend and is open to anyone who feels isolated or struggling with day to day living. It can be beneficial to people dealing with mental health issues such as anxiety and depression. It is a community project where feeling better outside leads to feeling better inside. We also welcome enquiries from volunteers to help us.
