PROJECTS

SKY BRIDGE INSTALLATION

This project proposes an interactive installation in a sky bridge located between the Hyatt Hotel and the Centerpoint Energy Building in Downtown Houston. The purpose of the project was to propose an installation that can interact with the everyday working community, gathering inspiration from a movie.

DOWNTOWN HOUSTON, TX Site Analysis

Movie Analysis

circulation

surroundings

Circulation in the bridge is usually high in traffic during the morning and afternoon hours. The sky bridge is usually busy during the morning when people are arriving to work, and the traffic is headed towards Centerpoint Energy. The sky bridge then becomes busy in the afternoon when people are heading home and the traffic is towards the Hyatt Hotel. During the midday the bridge is moderate in traffic and the traffic goes both ways from the Hyatt hotel to the Centerpoint Energy building and vice versa for lunch.

The sky bridge is located in downtown Houston between Dallas and Louisiana street. The surroundings of the sky bridge are buildings such as the Hyatt Regency, Total Plaza, Centerpoint Energy and Enterprise Plaza. Other surroundings are the bus stops and restaurants such as Einstein Bros Bagels.

transition

Movement is both from pedestrians and cars. The cars move under the sky bridge while people walk above all traffic in the sky bridge. The surrounding buildings accommodate pedestrians since it is downtown and most movement is done by walking due to all the traffic in the area. The sky bridge helps escape the traffic from down below and avoids crossing from street to street.

The transition between each building is different. The transition from the Hyatt hotel to the sky bridge is almost mysterious. There are two glass doors one gets confronted with. After the glass doors there is a folding of walls and is very bright. While the other end, the Centerpoint Energy building is very dark and open, the entrance is straightforward. hyatt regency centerpoint energy

The materials for the sky bridge installation vary from wood to porcelain. For the installation the pieces would be made out of birchwood plywood. Birchwood plywood has a nice smooth finish, it can be left untouched or it can be stained either way the finish is elegant. It is know for its durability and it has a great amount of stability and strength. It looks good for furnishings and it is not expensive. For the floor condition porcelain tile would be used. The installation would be painted with 21 different colors from Behr paints.

The sizes range from small to medium to large. After the sizes where chosen the dimensions of the model where varied from the original 6 sizes. In total there is 12 pieces in 1 module. There are 16 modules for the 96’ of the bridge. 1 module covers 6’, the 16 modules would be enough for the 96’ in total adding up to 192 pieces with 16 modules varying from mdf to basswood.

Module 1 16 modules = 192 pieces = 96ft

Wall Assembly The original shape for the wall assembly started as a triangle. After the triangle, the tetrahedron was assembled into the wall. It has 4 faces, 3 which are open and 1 which is solid. The sides are measured to 30 degrees so they can come together and form one piece. After the 30 degrees there was tiny holes made for the string to go in. The holes are separated by 1/4”. The sides are measured to 6“ all around. There is also 1” from the bottom to the top and from the top to the bottom. The inside of the triangle now becomes 4“ and the outside still stays 6”. The triangles are then put together side by side.

WALL The wall assembly, which is composed of tetrahedrons, can be seen in the first and second floor of the restaurant. The wall is shared between both floors and can be seen from the first up and from the second down since there is an opening in the second floor. The wall assembly can be also be seen from outside the restaurant since the outside is glass. The ceiling has triangles elements with down lights. The sides are also triangle wall mounted lights.

MOVING SPACE CARGO VAN By creating movement, space is designed. Small spaces do not require immense and bulky furniture. Having the van as a home requires new ways of how to make this space comfortable but yet meet all basic human needs. My idea is to have diverse furniture, furniture that functions as one thing but as well as another. Have furniture that moves and is lightweigh, creating the opportunity to move the furniture as much needed. It can be taken out and yet be comfortable.

A GROWING COMMUNITY A REUSE & ADAPTIVE PROJECT My vision for this project is to have a place for the community and at the same time enable the displaced to become active members of the Gulfton community. By being active with the Church campus, having learning centers and host events, the displaced can get the opportunity to be a part of the community and help the next to come.
