30 November 2017, Rome - Cactus pear should be considered as a valuable asset, especially for food and livestock feed in dryland areas. FAO gathered experts on the hardy plant to pool their knowledge in a bid to help farmers and policy makers make more strategic and efficient use of a natural resource too often taken for granted. During the recent intense drought in southern Madagascar, cactus proved a crucial supply of food, forage and water for local people and their animals.
While most cacti are inedible, the Opuntia species has much to offer, especially if treated like a crop rather than a weed run wild. Today the agriculturally relevant Opuntia ficus-indica subspecies - whose spines have been bred out but return after stress events - is naturalized in 26 countries beyond its native range. Its hardy persistence makes it both a useful food of last resort and an integral part of sustainable agricultural and livestock systems.
"Climate change and the increasing risks of droughts are strong reasons to upgrade the humble cactus to the status of an essential crop in many areas," said Hans Dreyer, director of FAO's Plant Production and Protection Division.

SUNDANESE
ANGKLUNG
WHAT IS CULTURE? Something that makes us proud. I think that culture is something unique and special from any ethnic wherever they come from. It’s so unique that can make us proud when it comes to represent Indonesia.
Unity In Diversity The instrument is held with one hand at the top of the frame, while the otherhand near the bottom shakes it to make the sound. Angklung and its music has become the cultural identity of Sundanese communities in West Java.
The largest ethnic group is the Javanese, and culturally dominant is the Sundanese. The Sundanese are an ethnic group native to the western part of the Indonesian Island of Java. Since Sundanese is rich, by rich I mean it’s culturally rich especially the arts that include various forms of music, and the most notable types of Sundanese music are angklung bamboo music.

PROPOSAL:
The interiors seeks to integrate cultural references into structure and materials to give travelers an immediate understanding and immediate sense of place.
The idea is to provide a cultural center or exhibition for passengers in the terminal, with the curation of Indonesia’s unique cultural experiences, and to celebrate Indonesia’s cultural unity in diversity.

CONCEPT: The gaps between the curve wall allows natural light to flow into the space.
We try to extend the horizontal and vertical plane using rounded corners and some curves and built it in to the linear space in order to form an interactive space within interior. We also maximaze the amount of natural light and other natural elements such as greenery and water to flow into the space. In this project, the cascading waterfall in the main hall creates an interesting dynamic between interior and exterior and interaction between visitors and space.
The stairs also serve as seating areas facing the stage. The ramp connects the front and rear stairs to create a more flexible space. Waterfall creates an interesting dynamic between inside and outside. Stairs rises up to 270 cm to create a cafe below.
PROPOSAL:
Entering the space, you can already see green steps in front of you.
We want to integrate interior with urban context. Since the building is located in Nangang Industrial Zone with many factories surrounding it, we would like to promote the green architecture and design to the people around and make something that is breathable.

CONCEPT:
Four Arts of Song Dynasty (焚香, 掛畫, 點茶, 插花) has always been the idea and concept behind Chun Shui Tang’s interior. In this project, we take the idea of one of the four arts which is “掛畫” to be our concept. The idea was “What would it be or look like in the interior space if the chinese painting was no longer just a painting hanging on the wall?” And then, we try to combine the traditional elements with the modern elements, not to forget their motto which is “以故為本, 以新為體 ”。 We hope to create a hotel that reflects Chun Shui Tang’s tea culture; to display the raw materials and celebrate the theatre of the preparation of the tea.

CONCEPT: The concept for the visitor center is grounded in the characteristic elements of the surrounding landscape. The space should be felt open and inviting, as the architecture is there to take care of you, shelter you, and let you focus on the nature experience.
time and landscape influence what visitors would see in a different time of day, month, or even a year. Hence the amount of people in each building differ from time to time.
Day time Midday THE ORIGINAL BUILDING
PROPOSAL: To improve and supplement the surroundings, rather than dominate them. Then, combine the function of each original space (shop street-> visitor center and police office; police office-> cafe, diy, and police’s dormitory; observation deck can now organize performances).
