Welcome to the 2014 Second Pride Festival I would like on behalf of the board of the Second Pride Festival, welcome you to Second Pride 2014. It has been a long and exciting year building up to this point and on behalf of the board I would like to thank everyone for their support. I would appreciate your indulgence for a moment as I want to talk briefly about community and what it means to me. I have said in the past and I continue to believe that we as members of the LGBTQ community and our allies and supporters need to respect one another and work towards goals that benefit the greater good. Within any large and diverse community as this one that we were elected to represent there will never be 100% support for everything. We as a board have worked very hard to make the adventure leading up to the Festival as enjoyable as we could for as many people. Our community within SL and outside is a strong and vibrant group that is moving forward to benefit the greater good. We as a group can learn from each other. Pride isn’t about one group of people or one club, or even one lifestyle within the group. Its about all of us. Please - Enjoy the festival and the community that we represent, those that are here and those who are not. – Petr Vanbeeck Second Pride Chair

A
t 10am Saturday, June 21st, Second Pride will Launch a spectacular Pride Parade with almost 90 custom built floats. Each float is a moving work of art created by two creative members of Second Life’s own LGTBQ community, FrannyDJ Dean and her Partner, Cyberwymn Greycloud. Following the grand opening, the parade will run 24/7 throughout the festival. For Franny, parades are a passion. She created her first parade in 2007 to test her building skills and have fun. “I think they were the first successful moving floats created in SL - People loved it and started bugging me to do more - so then I started adding new ones.” Franny has now made floats for Mardis Gras, Macy’s Thanksgiving, the 4th of July, Saint Patrick’s and Christmas - and others - her list keeps growing “We might add Halloween this year.” But this creating the LGTBQ parade for the Second Pride Celebration has been special. Franny said, “I have has such fun working on the pride parade. It has special meaning, of course, since I am a Lesbian - but it feels good seeing people enjoy the floats - the message of
pride is important and what better way to send a message than with something fun and entertaining.” When I first met Franny she was running a Mardis Gars parade. The first thing I noticed was that they were amazing creative works of art. Some were funny - some were just beautiful to look at. But then I realized most of the floats said “click here” or “ride me” and soon my partner jak and I were dancing on the floats and part of the action. The Second Pride parade is not just something to look at, but also something to have fun on and participate with. Most of the floats are ridable - they have their own music and dances and creative animations. I asked her how she got the idea. “The first parades I made were not interactive. People loved them. But I overheard a couple after one saying they wished they could ride the floats. The next day I tore the floats apart and started rebuilding them with animations so people could be part of the fun.” Franny and Cybers passion for creating fun and pushing the boundaries of what its possible to build in Second Life is evident. I asked her what goes into building
floats like this. “Well it takes a lot of research and planning - I usually spend 3-4 days on each float. Some floats take as long as a month. It takes time coming up with an idea and then trying to find ways to make that idea come to life and be more fun and realistic.” I asked what all goes into it expecting complicated builder’s talk “A friend tells me I shouldn’t bore people with the details of how its all done. It takes a lot of time to build and design. I just want people to have fun and experience the magic.” As we watched some of the floats go by I asked her which of the floats was her favorite. She emoted horror at the question” These floats are my children I don’t want to choose! They are all my favorites” But I wanted the inside scoop form one of the artists herself to share with pride festival goers and after a little more persuading she started confiding a couple favorites, “I guess I really like Xena, and the Village people floats like “In the Navy...” and I really enjoyed working with Fire Island on their custom dragon float.” But it seemed she wasn’t fished, “oh and “raining men” and the one with the “lion King theme.” I told her those were some of my favorites too, but she was on a roll, “I forgot Poseidon and “Top Model.”
I paused, thinking she was done “Moulin Rouge” and “Cabaret”” she continued... it seemed she was going to name all 86 floats afterall. I asked her what she wanted people to take away from the parade - “I just want people to have fun - to feel the spirit of celebrating the community and to feel like we are kids again - Pride is about getting together and exchanging ideas. The festival is for celebrating and I just want to help create some of the fun” I would like to thank Franny and Cyberwymn for their many many hours of hard work over the last few months putting together this spectacular parade. It is a huge contribution to the festival and it shows that second pride is not about the board. Pride comes from the community and the contributions of many. Please take a moment to thank Franny, Cyberwymn and the Parade sponsors (list) for all that they do to make second pride the great event it is.

Remembering a Friend I want to take a moment to remember Marcus Steeplechase, whose brilliant mind inspired the 2010 board and the community. Marcus was a man that thought outside the box and inspired others to follow. He never judged anyone by gender or sexual preference but encouraged the very best from them. He was a kind-hearted man. He was passionate with a wicked sense of humor and my mentor. More than that he was one of my very best friends. Under Marcus’ leadership, Second pride produced some amazing events: For example, Teahouse of the August Moon - an inspiring play done by the Pride players. He spearheaded a fabulous Art Walk that lasted several days with over 80 participants on 3 sims; with a fundraising party at the end. Marcus orchestrated the huge Haunted Mansion and party bringing together a community of builders. Second Pride Festival that year was inspired by the waterways of Venice. The water floats were a fabulous idea but try as they might just couldn’t seem to get around the waterways. Last year, Marcus returned for a an encore performance of “The Six Wives of Henry VII” at Pride. Marcus was a people person. He talked to people and found a common ground or something that both of them could relate to. Take a certain Wesley Spengler. He was DJing an event at Ironworks when Marcus mentioned a cookbook about rustic breads. Wes had no idea where that thought had come from. “I don’t recall ever mentioning at any point to anyone that I was interested in rustic breads. Making them I mean. Or even decent white bread, which I remember from when I was a kid at grandma’s house (she always made awesome bread). Out of the blue, he’s all excited to tell me about this specific book. But yeah, we’ve bought bread maybe 3 or 4 times since I got that damned book, what, 2 or 3 years ago? And I can finally make rustic breads. I’d never have found that book on my own. Just... Weird. It’s like he read my mind.” Something I find interesting is that Marcus loved doing plays. He was great at taking a subject and spinning his interpretation on it.
“When I first agreed to join Marcus on this great adventure called life, I had no idea what would be in store. Within a month, I wasn’t sure I would be able to keep up.” –Meatjocky Lederberg
even open a box. He always had a way of making us feel special. I believe one of the reasons he was so well liked was because it was never about him. Everything was about helping and/or having fun, it was never about what he could gain from others or the situation. He was truly selfless. Something which is rare in this day and age. Marcus’ long time partner in real life is Meatjockey Lederberg, I would like to share some of his words with you. “ When I first agreed to join Marcus on this great adventure called life, I had no idea what would be in store. Within a month, I wasn’t sure I would be able to keep up. I suspect that the same is true of each person here who counted Marcus as a traveling companion. We all kept up, and were each rewarded by being part of a voyage filled with joy, wonder, discovery, flashes of brilliant insight, sometimes sadness but always, always a surprise.” Marcus was an amazing man in his real life and second life, a champion for those whose needs were greater than his own. He brought the community together like no one else could; people working together to create that special fun and excitement. Sadly he passed away on August 3, 2013, His accomplishments in Second Life and Second Pride and for those of us that knew him, his memory, will live on forever in our hearts. –Kharissa Indigo

The most interesting part for me was that I never played a female part. In the “Mitten Murder Case” I played Mr Mitten a dead man that laid in the middle of the stage for almost every scene. Here are all these guys in this play and I was the one playing a man, surround by all these men in drag. It was hilarious. Adding to that special brand of fun was the variety shows like “Hollywood Babylon”. All of us taking a different type of act and putting it all together to make a show out of it.. Minnie the Moocher had to be my favorite( again playing a man). He took this talent and lent it to Second Pride as well. We performed a lot of this for Second Pride and donations to the organization. Marcus had a talent for bring people together. As I did some research for this article I found that most of the stories people had to tell about him was …” He was the first person to friend me” “ When I went to Ironworks he was the one that always talked to me” “Marcus got me involved in …” “ Marcus gave me a my first break in here” Marcus was always making new friends and helping them get acquainted with Second Life. He also put together a Gateway the helped new people when they joined find their way around or to just

Stonewall: The spark of a movement
T

his Sunday, June 28, will mark the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots the event largely regarded as a catalyst for the LGBT movement for civil rights in the United States. The riots inspired LGBT people throughout the country to organize in support of gay rights, and within two years after the riots, gay rights groups had been started in nearly every major city in the United States. At the time, there were not many places where people could be openly gay. New York had laws prohibiting homosexuality in public, and private businesses and gay establishments were regularly raided and shut down. In the early hours of June 28, 1969, a group of gay customers at a popular gay bar in Greenwich Village called the Stonewall Inn, who had grown angry
at the harassment by police, took a stand and a riot broke out. As word spread throughout the city about the demonstration, the customers of the inn were soon joined by other gay men and women who started throwing objects at the policemen, shouting “gay power.” Police reinforcements arrived and beat the crowd away, but the next night,
the crowd returned, even larger than the night before, with numbers reaching over 1000. For hours, protesters rioted outside the Stonewall Inn until the police sent a riot-control squad to disperse the crowd. For days following, demonstrations of varying intensity took place throughout the city. In the wake of the riots, intense discussions about civil rights were held. On the 1st anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, the first gay pride parades in U.S. history took place in Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, and near the Stonewall Inn in New York. The Stonewall riots inspired LGBT people throughout the country to organize in support of gay rights, and within two years after the riots, gay rights groups had been started in nearly every major city in the United States.

ride Month or Pride week is usually celebrated in June throughout the US. It commemorates the Stonewall riots in New York in 1969. Gay and lesbian patrons had enough of the raids by police the week before 10 guys were arrested . Their names and pictures published in the New York Times. 8 of the 10 were professionals mostly doctors and lawyers and committed suicide upon seeing their names and pictures in the paper. I was a bartender at the Lost and Found in Chicago - the oldest Lesbian bar there unfortunately it is closed today. We had rules that we need to survive and not be arrested no t-shirts dancing at least 12 inches apart no blouse that buttoned down the front - only button down the back no jeans that zipped up the front. It was simple if you were straight you could wear jeans that zipped up the front, if you were a lesbian in a lesbian bar you could not. One night we got a call from the police district the straight world was going nuts again and wanted police action on the gay community. Our bar was selected police would be there within minutes.. I was underage so I had to hide We heard the sirens start to come down the street and we scattered, one of the butches took me to the only safe place - the basement. This was not a pretty raid the papers were there - so the police were not gentle. They simply did not handcuff my sisters that night. . I stood in the basement with Susanne while listening to my sisters above pushed to the ground screaming, kicked and cuffed. Susanne gagged my mouth with her hand and whispered to me “no matter what do not move”. It was then i felt something at my legs and saw the shadows in the basement we had rats crawling over our legs. She kept me there until the police were gone - we stood down there for at least two hours. When we finally went upstairs she told me to clean up while she went and got the bail jar - a jar of bail money kept behind the bar. So I started to mop up - there was blood - shed by my sisters, broken glass, broken chairs and tables. All I could do was cry. Then, there appeared at the door - the boys from the guys bar down the street. Without a word, they first hugged me, grabbed mops and helped me clean up. My brothers - my friends. At that moment in time we were the only family we had. So was the start if a Pride, a Pride Community and that story is on reason that you have rights today. –Marge Beaumont
