THESITE

Inspiration, Analysis & Site Visit

Constructed at the confluence of five rivers, Krishna, Venna, Savitri, Koyna and Gayatri, this temple is a site of major religious importance and is thronged by devotees all through the year. The temple has a beautifully carved gaumukhi, out of which the waters of the five rivers flow. The temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna and has a lovely idol of him. The legend behind the temple is closely linked to Savitri’s curse on the Trimurtis, Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, who flow here as Koyna, Krishna and Venna rivers.

Analysis and Conceptualisation To transform the attributes of the panchganga process into the design, we studied the terrains surrounding each of the five rivers. Through the process various iterations were made with a blend of greens, water and dry landscaping to respond to the topography, vegetation and water levels of each of the respective terrains.

Outdoor Cafe: Mood board

At the climax of the five streams of landscape, the water cascades into a huge kund which is the plaza for the cafe. The area surrounding is the area allocated for the outdoor cafe. We are taking inspiration from an eroded river bed to colour hues and textures from naturally existing eroded surfaces.

Jainmuseum

A high grade project focused on creating enchanting and heavenly spaces which reflect different spiritual and scientific aspects of jainism through various morethan-life size installations and spaces.

01. Introduction

02. Soul & Karma 03. Tīrthaṅkara

04. Śrama & Ratnatraya 05. Ahiṃsā

06. Anekāntavāda 07. Aparigraha

08. Spiritual Purification Contemplative Space

The visitor arrives at a swastik installation which showcases the grouping of the jivas into Dev, Manushya, Naraki and Triyancha

Helps the visitor to further understand the soul and the supporting elements: time, space, matter etc., and also compare the scientific and the jain classification of 1-5 sensed beings

The 1-5 sensed beings as described in Jainism are compared with the understanding in western science through visual panels.

The visitors would walk into a tropical greenhouse space, which would be lit naturally and artificially in zones.

Walkthrough spatial experience with video screens

The visitors walk into a wide dimly lit room, with the statues of the 24 tirthankars all around. A panel near each contains, notable informationsymbol, parents, yaksha-yakshi etc.

Using a traditional storytelling medium of kavads, the panchkalyanaks of the Rishabdev and Mahavir are depicted, along with the socio- political scenario in Mahavir’s time.

The time cycle is explained through a suspended installation which exhibits the utsarpini and avsarpini. The sushma- dushma aras are indicated through light and shadow on the floor.

To Understanding of arrangement of all the 6 elements in cosmology, as well as to understand the Jain concept of cyclical time.

From the perspective of non- violence, the visitor can explore and understand the eating practices prescribed in Jainism.

A mural would depict the story of a selfish king, and highlight the types of possessions.

To highlight the changing modes of a substance with one common attribute visible in all the modes, and to explain the concept of their existence

Spiritual Purification: Installation Spiritual Purification is one of the most important philosophies in jainism. The various stages of the purification are manifested as spaces and levels in this installation. Movement and circulation form the framework of the whole experience. The spaces are sculpted with light to add on to the heavenly journey through the installation.

Steep staircases across the levels indicate the eminent fall from higher levels to lower stages, which makes the path of spiritual purification a difficult one to follow.

Cut away spaces allow the visitor to look down into the levels he has crossed, and up to the level he must achieve.

The final stage is quiet, meditative and inward- looking. The space is circular with a feel of being infinite. The visitor focuses on the single beam of light entering the room which is devoid of other distractions.
