INTERIOR DESIGN
I D E A S
After the last eighteen months, many people are now seriously considering updating their homes - creating new spaces, changing color schemes, furniture and even artwork. It’s become clear that home décor has an impact on emotions and well-being. An emphasis on natural light, good ventilation, and biophilic (connection with nature) design have gained in popularity. This is accomplished with the use of indoor plants, skylights, and open indoor-outdoor floorplans. Another noted concern is on climate change; many are now considering sustainability and which materials are best to use for the health of our planet. Homeowners want spaces that reflect their personalities, interests, hobbies, and history. Outdoor spaces are being treated as integral parts of the home, creating additional rooms to expand a family’s living and entertainment spaces. Stylish furniture is being chosen to be compatible with the indoor space.

)
Vintage and antique furniture are also making a comeback due to the widespread interest in sustainability. Lamps are important, not just for lighting, but also as art or a statement piece. The styles of the 70’s have made a resurgence, but with a twist. More muted and earthy tones have replaced bright orange, along with rounded furniture and multiple patterned fabrics.
CHOOSING COLORS IS AN IMPORTANT ELEMENT FOR THE DESIGN OF ANY HOME. This year Pantone has named “Very Peri” its color of the year. “Very Peri” is a bold blue with violet-red undertones, often called periwinkle. Periwinkle represents serenity and calmness as well as vibrancy and excitement. According to Pantone, “Veri Peri”
helps us embrace this altered landscape of possibilities, opening us up to a new vision as we re-write our lives: rekindling gratitude for some of the qualities that blue represents complemented by a new perspective that resonates today, Very Peri places the future ahead in a new light.
7
These are transformative times and “Very Peri is a symbol of the global zeitgeist of the moment and the transition we are going through.” Expect to see Very Peri in many different shades and uses. It can be used as an accent color for pillows, glassware, accent chairs, area rugs or art. Or one can try periwinkle patterned wallpaper to create excitement on walls, ceilings or even cabinets. Etsy has named Emerald Green their color of the year. It is a reminder of nature and works well on walls, bedding, pillows, and art. Other paint companies have chosen a more neutral color palettethis year in the belief that calm is needed after the uncertainty of the last two years. Either way, bright cheerful colors are sometimes exactly what we need.
THE CHOICE IS
yours!

TIME TO
It is time to start thinking about traveling again. Why not go somewhere historic and fun. Learn about Incan civilization at Machu Picchu in Peru or Mayan civilization in Mexico.
MACHU PICCHU PERU Machu Picchu, or the lost city as it is often referred to, is a bucketlist type of destination. As a world heritage site and one of the new Seven Wonders of the world, it is often considered to be the most spectacular urban creation of the Incan civilization. It was built as a sacred site around 1430 by the 9th Incan king without

the use of mortar. The stonework for the buildings is so well put together that there are no gaps in the joins. Instead, stones were cut to fit together. The stones can weigh as much as 50 tons and were transported without wheels. Rather, they were pushed up the hill by hundreds of men. Visit the semi-circular Temple of the Sun which is built around an enormous boulder. See the Temple of the Moon and its
ceremonial shrine built into a cave with niches that most likely held mummies. There is also a museum which explains how and why Machu Picchu was built. Located 8000 feet above sea level and deep in the tropical forest, it offers amazing architecture, incredible scenery and an abundance of unusual flora and fauna. There are 2 ways to arrive at Machu Picchu. One can travel by train from either Cusco or the Sacred Valley. Cusco is the easiest and the voyage takes 3.5 hours along the Urubamba River in the Sacred Valley. There is a hotel on site with a restaurant as well as luxury hotels in Cusco. Cusco is filled with historic sites from Incan and colonial times as well as restaurants, shopping and people watching.
YUCATAN PENINSULA MEXICO Along the Yucatan Peninsula, there are many historic sites built by the ancient Mayan people. One of the most popular is Tulum which is a well-preserved 13th century walled city situated on tall cliffs overlooking the Caribbean Sea. It is easily accessed from Cancun. Visit El Castillo, the temple of the Frescoes and the Temple of the
11
Descending God or explore the underground caverns of LabnaHa Eco Park and consider snorkeling in the caves of Cenote Dos Ojos. A day trip from Tulum takes you to the city of Chichen Itza, another of the new Seven Wonders of the World. It is one of the largest and best preserved architectural sites in the world. There are many ancient Mayan structures including the famous El Castillo pyramid which dominates the center of the site. It is 98 feet tall. There is also an ancient

sports arena, the Osario Pyramid and the Temple of the Warriors. The city was built over centuries going back as far as 600 ad and grew until the 1600’s when it was conquered by the Spanish. Along with the historic sites on the Yucatan Peninsula, there are wonderful places to stay Cancun for a city feel and Playa del Carmen for a small-town vibe and there is no shortage of allinclusive beach resorts.

DO YOU HAVE AN UP-TO-DATE
E S TATE PL AN?
The first thing to understand is that writing a will and having an estate plan are actually two different processes, even though an estate plan will include a will.
WILLS Creating a will can be a fairly simple process. It will address who will take care of your children, who will take over your business, and who receives your assets and other personal property. A will requires the naming of an executor responsible for fulfilling the deceased’s wishes. Having one’s wishes defined in a will ensures privacy, helps avoid family disputes and saves money by avoiding probate and the expense of attorneys and public trustees to determine the distribution of assets which then becomes public information.
ESTATE PLANNING Estate planning is the process of designating who will manage and distribute assets after death or incapacitation. It is a more intensive process and includes a variety of documents including the last will and testament. While it may be overwhelming to contemplate, a well-designed estate plan will ensure that assets are distributed according to one’s wishes. In addition to the last

will and testament, an estate plan might include a living will, a financial power of attorney, a living trust, and beneficiary designations. An estate plan can be particularly helpful in the case of multiple marriages, business ownership, specific charitable donations, or specific requests for health or property. It can also ensure wishes are carried out and that assets are distributed as designated.
LIVING WILL A living will is a document that describes the type of care one would want if incapacitated and cannot speak for themself. This can assist the family with difficult decisions and avoid confusion. A financial power of attorney allows for a designated appointee to handle financial affairs in the event of incapacitation. They can make financial decisions in accordance with the instructions defined in the estate plan.
LIVING TRUST A living trust is a document created during one’s life where a designated person, the trustee, is given responsibility for managing that individual’s assets for the benefit of the eventual beneficiary. It is designed to allow for the easy transfer of assets, thereby avoiding probate. A living revocable trust allows someone to be their own trustee and allows for changes in beneficiary at any time. An irrevocable living trust is restrictive, and beneficiaries may not be changed but there are certain beneficial tax consequences. 39
Beneficiary designations explain who receives which assets such as an IRA, insurance policy, savings account, or other financial instruments. A well-executed estate plan can minimize gift, estate and generation skipping transfer taxes to ensure that the family receives as much of the deceased’s estate as possible. Everyone’s plan is different and requires the right team of professionals to implement. It is also important to update the plan regularly as personal circumstances, legislation, and tax laws change frequently.

After staying in the house, wearing sweats and other assorted quarantine gear, it is time for a change. Many are now finally ready to dress up, even while still wearing masks and social distancing. Break out all of those accessories that piled up from months of online shopping. Nobody will judge if you overaccessorize. The new year brings changing trends in jewelry, both traditional and avant-garde. Pearls have always been in, but we are now seeing more of the freshwater variety. They have a more contemporary look. From pearl drop earrings to layered necklaces that mix

pearls with other materials, pearls work for all occasions. There are also personalized extra-long pendant necklaces and charm bracelets. Colorful beads are always a hit, whether worn as earrings, necklaces, or bracelets. Chain link necklaces and bracelets with attached charms are also hot at the moment. And feel free to
stack rings on a couple fingers while you’re at it! A brand new trend is mismatched earrings or simply wearing one dramatic shoulder grazing earring. Of course two shoulder length earrings also work. Mixing and matching different textures is also very popular. Instead of smooth gold hoops, go for a textured pair in silver; silver has made a huge comeback. Several top designers have moved towards mini handbags recently, often on long chains. They can even be worn as a necklace. And of course, let’s not forget about diamonds. They remain at the top of the food chain. Just ask Marilyn Monroe -“Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend”. Hair

Looking for an elegant and classic wedding venue to celebrate your big day? Country clubs are ideal for a variety of reasons. Here are some reasons why country club wedding venues are among our favorites. It’s a classic venue. A country club wedding has long been a time-honored tradition for couples with family ties to a members-only venue. Childhood memories of playing tennis or learning to expertly hit 18 holes can add sentimental meaning to a country club wedding. A country club also provides a familiar, picturesque venue. Expansive green spaces pair up with a stately ballroom to offer a magazine-worthy setting for a large indoor-outdoor wedding. Not a member of a nearby club? Some clubs are open to the public for events, while some private clubs will allow non-member weddings if the couple is “sponsored” by a member—meaning you just have to know someone who can connect you with the club’s in-house wedding planner. It offers a one-stop-shop. Like a hotel, a country club often has many wedding services on-site. Catering, flowers, linen rentals and even the wedding planner may all be available for one package price that can reduce planning time and stress. All you have to do is worry about finding the perfect country club-appropriate wedding attire for you and your wedding party. It’s a great place to have a rain backup plan. Maybe you’ve always dreamed of getting married in an outdoor ceremony—but then the skies open up right before you walk down the outdoor aisle. A country club offers the peace of mind of a rain plan with multiple ballrooms, dining rooms and other suitable indoor venues that can work as a stand-by on your big day. It can accommodate many sizes of weddings. Those aforementioned outdoor spaces, ballrooms and dining rooms also mean a country club can accommodate a variety of wedding sizes. Want an intimate wedding for 20? That gazebo in the formal gardens might make a great place for your I Do’s. Is a wedding for 250 of your friends and family more your style? Many country clubs can host very large weddings in their wow-worthy ballrooms, too. Two words: lawn games Those green spaces can do a lot more than hold chairs for your wedding ceremony. The large swaths of grass at a country club are a great space to entertain your guests with classic games like croquet, bocce ball and corn hole. And don’t let the golf course go to waste! A round of golf for your guests should definitely be in order at some point during the wedding weekend.
