INTERIOR DESIGN IDEAS

After the last eighteen months, many people are now seriously considering updating their homes - creating new spaces, changing color schemes, furniture and even artwork. It’s become clear that home décor has an impact on emotions and well-being.

An emphasis on natural light, good ventilation, and biophilic (connection with nature) design have gained in popularity. This is accomplished with the use of indoor plants, skylights, and open indoor-outdoor floorplans. Another noted concern is on climate change; many are now considering sustainability and which materials are best to use for the health of our planet.

Homeowners want spaces that reflect their personalities, interests, hobbies, and history. Outdoor spaces are being treated as integral parts of the home, creating additional rooms to expand a family’s living and entertainment spaces. Stylish furniture is being chosen to be compatible with the indoor space.

Vintage and antique furniture are also making a comeback due to the widespread interest in sustainability. Lamps are important, not just for lighting, but also as art or a statement piece.

The styles of the 70’s have made a resurgence, but with a twist. More muted and earthy tones have replaced bright orange, along with rounded furniture and multiple patterned fabrics.

CHOOSING COLORS IS AN IMPORTANT ELEMENT FOR THE DESIGN OF ANY HOME.

This year Pantone has named “Very Peri” its color of the year. “Very Peri” is a bold blue with violet-red undertones, often called periwinkle. Periwinkle represents serenity and calmness as well as vibrancy and excitement.

According to Pantone, “Veri Peri”

helps us embrace this altered landscape of possibilities, opening us up to a new vision as we re-write our lives: rekindling gratitude for some of the qualities that blue represents complemented by a new perspective that resonates today, Very Peri places the future ahead in a new light.

(. . .continued on page 6) 5 ALBUQUERQUE | NEW MEXICO | VOL. 1

These are transformative times and “Very Peri is a symbol of the global zeitgeist of the moment and the transition we are going through.”

Expect to see Very Peri in many different shades and uses. It can be used as an accent color for pillows, glassware, accent chairs, area rugs or art.

Or one can try periwinkle patterned wallpaper to create excitement on walls, ceilings or even cabinets.

Etsy has named Emerald Green their color of the year. It is a reminder of nature and works well on walls, bedding, pillows, and art.

Other paint companies have chosen a more neutral color palettethis year in the belief that calm is needed after the uncertainty of the last two years. Either way, bright cheerful colors are sometimes exactly what we need.

TIME TO

It is time to start thinking about traveling again. Why not go somewhere historic and fun. Learn about Incan civilization at Machu Picchu in Peru or Mayan civilization in Mexico.

MACHU PICCHU PERU

Machu Picchu, or the lost city as it is often referred to, is a bucketlist type of destination. As a world heritage site and one of the new Seven Wonders of the world, it is often considered to be the most spectacular urban creation of the Incan civilization.

It was built as a sacred site around 1430 by the 9th Incan king without

the use of mortar. The stonework for the buildings is so well put together that there are no gaps in the joins. Instead, stones were cut to fit together. The stones can weigh as much as 50 tons and were transported without wheels. Rather, they were pushed up the hill by hundreds of men.

Visit the semi-circular Temple of the Sun which is built around an enormous boulder. See the Temple of the Moon and its

ceremonial shrine built into a cave with niches that most likely held mummies. There is also a museum which explains how and why Machu Picchu was built. Located 8000 feet above sea level and deep in the tropical forest, it offers amazing architecture, incredible scenery and an abundance of unusual flora and fauna.

There are 2 ways to arrive at Machu Picchu. One can travel by train from either Cusco or the Sacred Valley. Cusco is the easiest and the voyage takes 3.5 hours along the Urubamba River in the Sacred Valley. There is a hotel on site with a restaurant as well as luxury hotels in Cusco. Cusco is filled with historic sites from Incan and colonial times as well as restaurants, shopping and people watching.

YUCATAN PENINSULA MEXICO

Along the Yucatan Peninsula, there are many historic sites built by the ancient Mayan people. One of the most popular is Tulum which is a well-preserved 13th century walled city situated on tall cliffs overlooking the Caribbean Sea. It is easily accessed from Cancun. Visit El Castillo, the temple of the Frescoes and the Temple of the

Descending God or explore the underground caverns of LabnaHa Eco Park and consider snorkeling in the caves of Cenote Dos Ojos.

A day trip from Tulum takes you to the city of Chichen Itza, another of the new Seven Wonders of the World. It is one of the largest and best preserved architectural sites in the world. There are many ancient Mayan structures including the famous El Castillo pyramid which dominates the center of the site. It is 98 feet tall. There is also an ancient

sports arena, the Osario Pyramid and the Temple of the Warriors. The city was built over centuries going back as far as 600 ad and grew until the 1600’s when it was conquered by the Spanish.

Along with the historic sites on the Yucatan Peninsula, there are wonderful places to stayCancun for a city feel and Playa del Carmen for a small-town vibe and there is no shortage of allinclusive beach resorts.

Identity theft is when someone uses your personal or financial information without your permission. They might steal your name and address, credit card or bank account numbers, Social Security number or medical insurance account numbers. The information could then be used to make purchases, get new cards in your name, open a phone, electricity, or gas account, or even steal your tax refund or medical benefits

No one wants to be the subject of identity theft. If it happens to you, there are steps you can take, and the government is there to help at Identitytheft.com.

The important thing is to take all the necessary steps to prevent it.

Keep your financial records, Social Security and Medicare cards and any other documents that have personal information in a secure place. If getting rid of them, be sure to shred them.

Do not give out your Social Security number other than to the IRS, your bank, and your employ er without asking why they need it. If they have a valid reason, try offering just the last 4 digits.

If you are logging in to an online account, use a strong pass word.

Do not give your personal in formation to someone who calls, emails, or texts you. They could be a scammer trying to steal your information.

In addition to taking steps to protect your information, there are things to do to detect identity theft.

Track what bills you owe and when they are due. If you stop getting a bill, that could be a sign someone changed your address or other information

Review your bills for charges that don’t belong to you

Check your bank account for withdrawals not made by you

Get and review your credit reports, as accounts you don’t recognize could be a sign of identity theft.

Many companies sell identity theft protection services that may include credit monitoring, identity monitoring, identity recovery services, and identity theft insurance. These services may be offered by your bank or credit union, credit card provider, employer’s benefits program, or insurance company. Also, there are credit monitoring services like Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion that offer these services as well.

Identity monitoring services may notify you of a change of address request, court or arrest records, orders for new utility, cable or wire services, application for a payday loan, information on websites that sell stolen identity information.

Most will not notify you if someone uses your information to file a tax return and collect your refund, get Medicare benefits, get Medicaid benefits, get welfare benefits, claim Social Security benefits, or even claim unemployment benefits.

If you discover that someone is misusing your personal information visit:
