LUXURY

LIVING IDE AS

A Luxurious home is not just well appointed, it is one where the amenities allow you to feel spoiled. Pools, saunas, in-home gyms, backyard tennis courts, game rooms, and wine cellars are a few things that come to mind.

OPEN FLOOR PLANS With a new decade comes new interior design trends, so there is no better time than now to update the home. Not that trends like white kitchens and accent walls will disappear entirely but there will be an evolution and individuality and creativity will reign. Unique pieces will be important as well as unusual materials with an emphasis on environmental sustainability. People want their homes to make them happy and to reflect their personalities. They are also thinking more long term and buying more for quality as they become more ecologically conscious.

WALL COLORS Simple changes can make a big impact and paint is one of the simplest. 2020 appears to be the year for colored walls, ceilings and even cabinetry. We will be seeing fewer white walls and lots more color. Pantone picks classic blue as the color of 2020 while Sherwin-Williams picks navy. Benjamin Moore has chosen a soft rosy pinkish color. The theme for all three is the creation of a relaxing environment.

WALLPAPER Wallpaper is also making a comeback, particularly for powder rooms and foyers. With wallpaper of every style, from bold, modern statements to subtle classics, don’t be surprised to see wallpaper used more frequently on ceilings, not just in the bathroom. Expect to see large scale patterns, bold colors and even metallic accents, that best displays the homeonwers style and personality.

KITCHENS With the trend toward open floor plans, the kitchen has become an extension of the main living space, encouraging interaction and entertainment. This trend supports a casual yet connected lifestyle as well as informal dining.

IN-HOME CABINETRY AND APPLIANCES People are experimenting with colorful cabinetry and appliances and even two-toned cabinetry. Counter islands for seating are essential with this design as they increase the intimacy of the kitchen. LED lighting, big sinks, stainless steel appliances are still in.

RETIRE WITHOUT CHANGING YOUR LIFESTYLE

Senior Independent Living is a hot topic these days considering our aging population of healthy vibrant older people. These communities are often the best option for active adults over 55 who want a built-in sense of community and privacy. Meant for people with few medical needs or assistance requirements, they offer an opportunity to live amongst other active seniors either in apartments, cottages, villas or even small homes such as in the 55 plus communities. Independent living community staff take care of the grounds and common areas and housekeeping may be an option as well. The mission of independent senior living is an active social, fun-filled community where residents can relax and enjoy life.

AMENITIES While residents live independently, most communities offer amenities, activities and services. Amenities differ from one type of independent living to another. Often, recreational centers or clubhouses are available on-site to offer opportunities to connect with peers and participate in community activities such as continuing education classes, movie nights, holiday gatherings, card games etc.. Activities: They may also offer amenities such as a swimming pool, fitness center, tennis courts, golf course or other clubs. Other services may include on-site spas, beauty and barber salons, housekeeping and laundry services as well as transportation services. Dining: Some offer menu plans where a certain number of meals are included for shared dining as well as the option of in-home meal preparation.

The Countdown

To Retirement

M oney See Where You Stand - It’s time to assess how prepared, or unprepared, you are financially for retirement. • Take a quick test: Assuming your retirement

is about 10 years away, you want to have roughly seven times your current salary in savings, according to research from Fidelity. That puts you on the road to having about 10 times your final salary saved by retirement and maintaining your present standard of living. Retire before hitting 67 and you’ll need more saved; after, you’ll need less.

• .Do a deeper dive: Plug your current numbers (such as earnings, savings and future pensions) into an online calculator to estimate your retirement income. Experts say you’ll need 75 to 80 percent of preretirement income to live well — debatable but a good starting point.

• .Don’t despair: You have 10 years to act, by earning more, trimming expenses or delaying retirement. “Whatever you can do can only help,” says George Papadopoulos, a financial planner in Novi, Mich.

S ave

the easy way

If you’re among the 82 percent of workers paid via direct deposit, save more by splitting your pay across accounts. Have your payroll department put part of each check into an online savings account, where it’s out of sight and out of mind. The direct-deposit users who split their deposits save up to $90 more per month than those who use another method to save, according to a recent study. (. . .continued on page 18)

Pad your nest egg If you already have healthy savings in a 401(k), 403(b) or IRA, open a Roth IRA (in 2019 you can contribute up to $7,000 if you’re 50 or older), or put money into a regular taxable account.

Why do it You’re laying the groundwork for lower taxes later. Say you need a new roof on your house in retirement. If you take money from a 401(k) or traditional IRA, it is taxable as ordinary income, and you may end up in a higher tax bracket, explains Carolyn McClanahan, founder of Life Planning Partners. But you can pull your contributions from a Roth IRA tax free (earnings, too, if you’re at least 59½ and have had the Roth at least five years). You can also invest via a basic taxable brokerage account; when you sell securities, you’ll pay only (usually lower) capital gains taxes on the profits.

Pay down the mortgage The problem with a mortgage in retirement is that you may have to sell investments to cover payments. And sometimes that will be when the markets are down - the worst possible time to sell, says Shelley Giordano, chair of the Funding Longevity Task Force at the American College of Financial Services. Her advice: 1. In place of your monthly payments, make half payments every two weeks. Those 26 payments per year are the equivalent of 13 monthly payments, resulting in a faster payoff and lower total interest costs. 2. Got a tax refund? A bonus? A side job? Apply that to your principal. 3. Avoid refinancing your mortgage, since a new loan with a later payoff date means more of your monthly payment goes to interest expense, not an increase in your home equity. 4. Don’t use a home equity loan or line of credit for purchases. The new tax law makes that less attractive, says Giordano. And this is the wrong time to be growing your mortgage debt. Put new retirement savings to work Not sure where to invest additional money? Aim for growth, somewhere between a trip to Vegas and stuffing cash into your mattress. The sweet spot •. Balanced mutual funds: Seek a mix of stocks and bonds; a 50/50 or 60/40 ratio of stocks to bonds is reasonable. • Target-date mutual funds: These balanced funds automatically adjust investments to lower risk as you age. Conservative but sound • High-grade corporate bond funds • Money market accounts • U.S. government bond funds • Certificates of deposit and online savings accounts (See bankrate.com for Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.–insured banks offering higher rates.) • Series I inflation-protected savings bonds (sold at treasurydirect.gov)

Work Prepare Your Plan B - Ask yourself these questions, and be honest. 1. Do I work in a stable and growing industry? 2. .Do I work for a stable and growing company? 3. Is my heart still in it? Have you answered no to any? It’s time to update your LinkedIn profile and see what else is out there.

• Why do it: Only about half of workers cruise their way to a planned, voluntary

retirement; the rest of us exit prematurely, often as a result of job loss or burnout. But you still have time to regroup. “With 10 years to go, there is still enough runway to make a mark,” says career and retirement expert Nancy Collamer.

• .How to do it: You know the routine. Tell people who can help you. Sign up for job alerts on the go-to site in your industry. Browse the postings that interest you, and note the skills that employers are seeking.

• .Want to stay put? Get busy anyway. “Whether you drive a bus or work in a store or in a professional occupation, maximize your opportunities by building your capital,” Collamer advises. “Give talks or write articles to boost your profile, or take advantage of short-term training programs.” One option: Go to linkedin.com/ learning and get online access to thousands of business, creative and technology courses for $30 per month. EXCITING TRAVEL

Destinations To avoid the crowds of mass tourism, consider travel into pristine natural environments and indigenous cultural communities. Below are just a few interesting suggestions.

1. Cuba: Although most people are particularly interested in Havana for its classic cars, Cuban culture and colonial architecture, there is so much more to see on this Caribbean island. Leave the city to explore the majestic mountains, tropical jungles, national parks, and nature reserves, which offer a diverse array of wildlife. 2. Cape Verde: The archipelago of Cape Verde, off the west coast of Africa, includes 10 islands and offers a diverse variety of ecosystems. Eastern islands are flat and barren while those in the west include cloud-capped mountains and volcanic cones. There are high cliffs, black-sand beaches, wind-sculpted landscapes with forest-covered hills in the island’s interiors. Cape Verde is listed as one of the top ten Ethical Destinations due to its commitment to clean energy, human rights, conservation and cultural preservation. 3. Botswana: Over the last 50 years, Botswana has prioritized conservation and the protection of its wildlife with the establishment of the Moremi Nature Reserve in 1963, resulting in amazing attractions for animal lovers. Explore

PHOENIX | ARIZONA | VOL. 3

the Okavango Delta via canoe, view the 120,000 elephants in Chobe National Park and a traditional Big 5 safari experience at Moremi. While you are in Botswana, try to include a visit to Victoria Falls, one of the seven natural wonders of the world where you can canoe with the elephants, swim in Devil’s Pool and hike the Batoka Gorge. 4. Croatia: For a small country, there is much to experience and explore including ten UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Encompassing more than a thousand islands in the Adriatic Sea, the major coastal city of

Dubrovnik is known for its massive 16th century walls encircling an Old Town with Gothic and Renaissance buildings. The town of Split is centered around the 4th century ruins of a Roman Palace complex. Croatia’s beaches are busy in the summer and the island of Hvar is known for its yachts and celebrities. There is also Plitvice Lakes National Park known for its turquoise lakes and dramatic waterfalls.

Looking for an elegant and classic wedding venue to celebrate your big day? Country clubs are ideal for a variety of reasons. Here are some reasons why country club wedding venues are among our favorites. It’s a classic venue. A country club wedding has long been a time-honored tradition for couples with family ties to a members-only venue. Childhood memories of playing tennis or learning to expertly hit 18 holes can add sentimental meaning to a country club wedding. A country club also provides a familiar, picturesque venue. Expansive green spaces pair up with a stately ballroom to offer a magazine-worthy setting for a large indoor-outdoor wedding. Not a member of a nearby club? Some clubs are open to the public for events, while some private clubs will allow non-member weddings if the couple is “sponsored” by a member—meaning you just have to know someone who can connect you with the club’s in-house wedding planner. It offers a one-stop-shop. Like a hotel, a country club often has many wedding services on-site. Catering, flowers, linen rentals and even the wedding planner may all be available for one package price that can reduce planning time and stress. All you have to do is worry about finding the perfect country club-appropriate wedding attire for you and your wedding party. It’s a great place to have a rain backup plan. Maybe you’ve always dreamed of getting married in an outdoor ceremony—but then the skies open up right before you walk down the outdoor aisle. A country club offers the peace of mind of a rain plan with multiple ballrooms, dining rooms and other suitable indoor venues that can work as a stand-by on your big day. It can accommodate many sizes of weddings. Those aforementioned outdoor spaces, ballrooms and dining rooms also mean a country club can accommodate a variety of wedding sizes. Want an intimate wedding for 20? That gazebo in the formal gardens might make a great place for your I Do’s. Is a wedding for 250 of your friends and family more your style? Many country clubs can host very large weddings in their wow-worthy ballrooms, too. Two words: lawn games Those green spaces can do a lot more than hold chairs for your wedding ceremony. The large swaths of grass at a country club are a great space to entertain your guests with classic games like croquet, bocce ball and corn hole. And don’t let the golf course go to waste! A round of golf for your guests should definitely be in order at some point during the wedding weekend.
