Industrial Design PORTFOLIO
Hello, I am Priya Saraf, a final year student at MIT Institute of Design, Pune. I believe in using a ‘Holistic design’ approach, in which not only the functional aspect but also aesthetics, ergonomics, feasibility and manufacturability are considered. Following design process helps me to critically evaluate a given problem and identify opportunities for design intervention.

PROJECT BRIEF: Build a low cost, robust, long lasting system including an underground digester and an over ground shelter ( with lockable door and roof ).
DESIGN CONSTRAINTS for shelter: Robust Economical Long life Easily manufacturable Ease of transportation Assembly on site Aesthetically pleasing
GROUND LEVEL
Bio- DIGESTER ? Bio- digester is a system which uses anaerobic bacteria to decompose waste into liquid and gases. It is suitable for bio- decomposition of : Human waste Kitchen waste Animal waste DESIGN CONSTRAINTS for Bio- digester: Increase in surface area without increase in size (1000cm x 1000cm) Economical Long life Easily manufacturable Ease of service
Bio TOILET
EASY to Maintain | Economical | Hygienic | Robust
Roof Translucent FRP corrugated sheet Natural light source Raised roof for air ventilation
Incorporated toilet pan Toilet pan + digester cap (Material and cost saving)
Ergonomically designed pan Design that assures proper disposal of human waste
Cement panel Walls 15mm Thick “Bison Panels High weather insulation Light weight and easy to assemble Low cost material with high strength.
Membrane placement at an angle Surface area increase by 2.6% each (without increasing the size)
Details Easy assembly Detachable parts i.e. Easy transport Gap between two walls is filled with white cement paste which creates a strong joint. Cement panel will be placed in side aluminium channels. Aluminium channels can be inserted in FRP for strong joining.
Floor Inclined towards center
Ribs for strength

GREEN chair
To use discarded paint cans and convert them into a useful product.
Instead of putting the cans in incinerators or landfills and harm environment, we thought to use the material strength of the can and convert it into a Furniture design solution.
Efficient reuse of material
Materials Used:
Optimization of Manufacturing Process - Less operation - Less wastage - Easy assembly
Mild Steel Metal Flats Tin Cans Cotton Rope

To design a lighting solution which is Interactive and participative
H!LIGHT Hilight is a combination of both task light and ambient light. Features: Adjustable Light Intensity Creates soothing environment Playful/ Interactive Non- static Contemporary Design
Tubes can be slided up and down with the help of projections. A Pop- up mechanism can also be used to remove the tubes.

FOAM cutter
Precise cutting | Dust free cutting| Easy to use | Quick derivation of raw forms
To develop a Hand tool for cutting foam using nichrome wire.
PROBLEMS FACED: Does not cut straight Dust granules Clamping of block Wire sagging
Ideation and Mock-ups
FOAM cutter EASY | PRECISE | DUST FREE | QUICK
Attachment for providing support when a person wants to cut at an angle of 45 o, i.e. CHAMFER
FINAL CONCEPT A hand held device which cuts foam using Nichrome wire, also known as “Resistance wire.”
How does it work?
Heat control
When current is passed through the nichrome wire (heating element), it heats because of its good resistance and then melts the foam that

SMART cart
To design a solution in order to make the process of billing time-efficient and user-friendly in departmental stores.
PROBLEMS FACED : Waiting in the billing queue
Searching for the price on the item
Keeping track of the amount spent
FINAL CONCEPT: New system of shopping
1
Enter Customer takes the SMART- CART
2
Shop + Billing on cart SMART cart scans all the items that are put in while shopping with the help of Omni-scanner attached to the cart
3
Pay + Exit The total amount is displayed. The amount can be paid at the exit
SMART cart Right panel controls: Print button, Toggle button Scroller
Left panel controls: Power ON/OFF button Refresh button 1:1 Prototype
This device will be mounted as a handle on shopping carts. This will help people to make the process of billing time-efficient and user-friendly in departmental stores by adapting the new system of shopping (i.e. SMART-CART)
Adjustable screen
INTERFACE of Smart Cart
Welcome Home Screen of Smart Cart. Customer has two options on the screen- to view the store ‘map’ and to ‘shop’. The two options can be toggled any time.
Store Map to help the customer find the desired items easily.
The ‘Shop’ option shows the customer his purchased items, its quantity and the price.
VALIDATION It was carried out at Reliance Mart, Pune. We fixed our prototype on the shopping cart handle and gave it to the users for validation.

MECH-sieve
To develop a mechanism for the task of sieving grains.
Driven pulley
Driver pulley
1 Rotation of driver pulley = 2 Rotations of driven pulley = 2 travels of the piston
Mech Sieve reduces effort while sieving the grains.
1 Rotation of driven pulley = 9 cm + 9cm displacement back and forth
of grains efficient.
It uses the pulley and the piston mechanism to make the sieving
