ARCHITECTURE & ME In its most basic form, Architecture is the shelter for humanity and in the larger context of the history of mankind, it has been an essential part of the social, environmental and economic structure of our world. I am interested in exploring the communicative aspect of the built environment with hopes of impacting user-behavior to achieve a culture of sustainablity. I graduated with my Masters degree in (Sustainable) Architecture from the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) in May 2015. I have since been working in the role of Architectural Designer at HBT Architects in Rochester. I have recently returned to India and looking for opportunities that align with my interests. I am a registered architect in India. I received my Bachelors degree in architecture from the Government College of Architecture (GCA, now Faculty of Architecture, UPTU) when I graduated with honors in 2007. Through a broad range of experience both in India and USA, my creative curiosity has been fed while working on an adaptive reuse project for the Aga Khan Development Network, fire station designs, masterplanning project in Cyprus, group housing constructions, hotel designs, large and small scale landscape developments, road beautification work, residential and commercial interior design projects and design and manufacturing administration of a board game (available commercially with nearly 2000 copies sold). Formal training in architectural design has equipped me for creative building design as a tool to foster socio-cultural, environmental and economic well-being and subsequent work experience has reinforced my understanding and appreciation of the many roles an architect plays in society at large. Through her designs and appreciation of her responsibilities, the architect not only drives the aesthetic and functional utilization of a place, be it a neighborhood or a city, but she also leads its economic and environmental trajectory.

GESTURE
One East Ave hotel is designed to take over an office building in the heart of Rochester’s downtown. The original mid-century modern building stands defiantly, almost arrogantly, amidst older buildings. The new hotel, which is to be a symbol of prosperity, after years of decline, needs to breathe in a new energetic and progressive life back into the area. The new building program consists of hotel rooms in the existing tower and service areas in the basement. The plaza accommodates retail and dining - a center for office workers around to bring their lunch over and generate critical mass in the area during the day. All new space allocations are based on an analysis of available existing areas.

TOWER
AN EXPLORATION OF URBAN RELATIONSHIPS Location :
Rochester
Year:
Spring, 2014
A high-rise tower has 2 relationships with its context - One is with the immediate surrounding at ground zero which includes building users, pedestrians, streets, transportation modes and neighboring buildings among other things. The other, with the larger context of the city and the affect on the city’s skyline - also known as the “Postcard” relationship. Vent tower is the result of a study to address these contrasting scales and design an architecture that fulfills its functional purpose while delivering the message of sustainability to the city of Rochester and the world at large.
Vehicular Access Pedestrian Access
SITE ANALYSIS A study of the urban infill site’s climate and context leads to the following conclusions: • Winter sun exposure is minimal at the ground + 2 levels, due to shadows cast by surrounding high rise buildings. • Sufficient wind velocity is available at high altitudes to be a design factor. It can be used for promoting natural ventilation and harnessing wind energy. • Architectural styles around site range from mid to high rise Modern and Post-Modern buildings. • Site has pedestrian only access on the East side.

TOWER FORM EVOLUTION
EXISTING CHASE TOWER
Inspiration is drawn from the existing Chase tower which is located in the visual vicinity of the site. Its postmodern tower became the starting point for the design of the Vent tower form.
FLIPPED VERTICALLY
The tower form is flipped vertically to form a piece of the jigsaw puzzle in the Rochester skyline for balance and rhythm. The vertical lines will behave as “wind shafts” running vertically on the outside face of the building.
FORM ROOTED TO EXISTING ICONIC MIDTOWN STRUCTURE This site is home to the iconic “Midtown Mall” structure, which is currently stripped down to the bare structure - striking in its minimalism and severity. The Midtown Mall is a historically significant site for Rochester in that not only was it the first ever enclosed mall in USA but also an iconic destination representative of the economically superior status of the city. The tower will rise from an amorphous glass shell embedded within this exsiting structure, thereby paying homage to historical contexts.
WRAP WIND SHAFTS AROUND BUILDING FORM Wind shafts are wrapped around the main tower, embedded in the form. This allows for smoother wind movement around the building thereby facilitating the cooling effect and thus offsetting energy consumption from air conditioning. This strategy works 42 - 56% of the year.
VISUALLY APPEALING FORM
Tower is slimmed down to add elegance to the form and the taper at the top is stretched down to enhance structural integrity and visual appeal. The overall structure of the tower thus consists of a central structural and mechanical core from which floor slabs cantilever out. The glass envelop is in the form of an exoskeleton which supports and is supported by the main central structure. In combination, the tower has dual structural stability and flexibility.
EXTEND SKIN AND STRUCTURE TO ACT AS SOLAR CHIMNEY The exoskeleton is stretched up to form hollow Solar Chimneys, that will facilitate wind movement from the bottom of the shaft.

-TION| THEORETICAL STRUCTURE AN EXPLORATION OF THEORY AND DESIGN Location :
Theoretical (Greece)
Year:
Spring, 2013
This design exercise was an exploration in material properties and conceptual building forms that allowed for visual interaction between the “indoor” and the “outdoor”. The team based project (Allison LaChance and myself) entailed picking 2 verbs from a list of 800. Based on these two words and using the cube as a module, a form, functionality and design had to evolved - while exploring the properties of a material of choice.
UNIT = CUBE
Tessellation /ˌtesəˈlāSH(ə)n/ An arrangement of shapes closely fitted together, especially of polygons in a repeated pattern without gaps or overlapping.
Subtraction /səbˈtrakSH(ə)n/ The process or skill of taking one number or amount away from another:
STRUCTURE
LASER CUTTING
BACK-PAINTING
MODEL ABSTRACTION FINISHED PRODUCT
ASSEMBLY
Tessellation is found abundantly in Greek construction culture. Therefore, the mosaic of colors formed through the settlements on Greek islands has been the source of inspiration for the color palette and spatial layout - it is evocative of the intermingling of public pathways and private abodes, mutated and evolved to replace the sense of randomness and chaos (albeit beautiful in their own context) with that of organized patterns, not unlike those found in the carefully crafted Greek symbols of representation.
HABITABLE SPACE
Using Plexiglas as the choice of building material, the model is a manifestation of a design structured to represent an opportunity for a visual relationship between the indoor and the outdoor - between the public and the private. A cube of side one and a half inches forms the module or “building block” of space and, “Subtraction”, the principle tool to create the hierarchy and dilution of functional zones.
FORMAL VOID
The linear sense of cleanliness and neat organization of space and movement in the design is treated as the “Inception” of a relationship between spaces and forms that will be evolved and nurtured with time and use.

PLAYFULNESS
A design competition entry for AIA Rochester Ideas Competition. The competition entailed proposing a building program for an urban infill site along with a concept level design. Rochester is a city of many ethnicities. As the demand for equality increases and gentrification becomes a questionable strategy in this day of social sustainability, the architect needs to step in the shoes of a sociologist and anthropologist, more than ever. I proposed a program and design to utilize the highly visible corner at the intersection of two major streets as a “Culinary and Business Incubator.

SERVICES AND FACILITIES AROUND SITE TO SUPPORT INCUBATOR
SITE DESIGN Every building is an addition to its context and this detail is relevant to a greater extent in an urban “infill” site. Thus the architecture needs to address the present need while alluding to the future that was envisioned as the design evolved to its final manifestation. The design includes an inherent connectivity to the river trail while giving a new meaning to “alleyway” between urban buildings. Through the incorporation of a playful linear atrium along the existing Court Exchange building, the architecture address the past and the future.

Seeing as the building will serve mainly as a Culinary Incubator, the shell is likened to a salad bowl - and colors such as green, red, yellow are used on the facade just as one uses colorful ingredients to make a healthy wholesome meal.

ST REET
The site context is the source of inspiration for most design decisions made. Apart from the obvious decisions related to existing site boundaries, the word Playfulness was used 10 define the concept in order to break away from the stoic and serious buildings to the West and South of the site. The free, casual ‌ playful nature of the building design brings resiliency to the urban texture of the area especially as it is included while retaining datum lines and proportions from existing context.

PROJECT
Abbotts brand started serving frozen custard in 1902 and were looking for a brand makeover and new layout and design for their stores. This was the second store and we stuck to the design statement produced in the first store design. However, this was a different animal, as the existing building was historical and had exposed brick and tin ceilings. The design exercise involved combining the existing design with a new context while adding features to provide the franchisee its signature identity.

NATURE
North Cyprus Summer, 2013
This was an exercise in site, micro-climate, cultural and feasibility analysis and a schematic design based on the findings for establishing an eco-village - a project that symbolizes a holistic approach to sustainable tourism by providing shelter for those seeking environmentally sensitive stay, play and exploration on the island. After the master-planning and analysis, a scale was developed for individual and small grouped living quarters. Also programmed are common outdoor areas and outposts for gathering, hiking, snorkeling, gardening and enjoying the sites along with learning and interaction at the workshops and daily routines of eco-tourism facilities. All site-analysis is done by me and all sketches have been drawn and developed by me along with passive solar designs. I was a part of this project while working at In.Site:Architecture.
