PRIYANKA VERMA

Hello! My name is Priyanka Verma and I am a fourth year undergraduate student in Faculty of Architecture, MAHE. I believe architecture exists in the smallest elements present on Earth and a better understanding of these elements can inspire a more sustainable approach towards built spaces. As an aspiring architect, my goal is to thrive towards sustainable solutions for the betterment of the society and the environment. I intend to broaden my knowledge to design functional spaces to enhance the living standards of the users.

Martial Arts Boarding School Semester 6 Martial arts has been a part of India’s ancient culture and traditions and there’s been a rise in the number of people pursuing it as a career but there are not many residential schools with education facility providing training to these young martial artists. This school accomodates 350 students and provides them with CBSE education along with professional training in the field. The 12,000 sqm. site is located in a rural setting of Shimoga, Karnataka. The site is well-connected with natural elements with coconut plantation on one side and running water canal on the other providing and a quite and disciplined environment. The material used for the project is prefabricated concrete. The design challenge was to keep the scale of the blocks relatable to the children and making it user-friendly. Hence, most of the buildings are 2 storied. Due to shortage in site area the hostel blocks increase vertically to accomodate more students.

The idea behind the site planning was based on the concept of Gurkul- a tree, the central point acts as the main source of education and spaces are organised around it.

A central plaza is the main activity area of the school, acts as the main performing space and connects all the academic blocks.

Based on the two age groups of children, blocks were divided and third block acting as connecting block with common activities like laboratories. The blocks are seperated by a central plaza that acts as a activity and noise buffer. the central plaza becomes a transition place.

All the blocks are designed around a courtyards to facilitate ventilation.

The site zoning was done such that the vehicular movement is restricted to the periphery of the site. The public spaces are placed closer to the entry so that visitors are restricted and the residence is placed on the farend of the site to maintain privacy and semi-public spaces acting as buffer.

Residence for Faculty Semester 2 Thr project brief was to design a residence for four in Dashrath Nagar, Manipal. The site area is 300 sqm.The client’s wish was to keep the design traditional but with modern amenities along with maximised daylighting and open spaces. The idea was to increase Northern light inside the house and shade from the Southern side. Terrace has been provided on the Southern side to utilise the view, shade the walls and take advantage of the wind. Along with that, client requested to have nature close to the built space so court and open spaces for gardening have been provided. The material used for construction is the locally available material- laterite which also acts as a thermal mass reducing heat gain. There is use of jalli walls and mangalore tiles in response to the climate.

Urban Design- Parking Semester 7 More than parking- The Udupi urban population and context was studied to develop the tourism potential of the town. Krishna Temple, a major tourist spot recieves thousands of tourist but it was observed that the parking for the temple was not adequately utilised due to accessibilty and other on-street unorganised parking spaces The aim of this project was to accomodate parking for the tourism season and divert the users to parking spacegiving them a cause to park in that parking lot, making it something more than just a parking lot. The ideas was to create a space that acts more than just parking for the people of the town- as a public space. For this purpose, a 26,000 sqm. parking allotted was developed along with a shopping department on site. This was done to bring in users for a purpose other than parking. The design of structure has been kept simple and follows the traditional architecture to keep the context relevant. The design challenge was to maximise space usage in a triangular site which was capitalised by considering the site boundary conditions.
