CULINARY ARTS SCHOOL:
The culinary school apart from being introvert and private in one sense opens up to the community as a public space for people to experience food as a form of art rather than just a necessity, considering a formal education in culinary arts is a fairly new concept in the country.

MASSING EVOLUTION
䜀䐀䘀䈀䠀䜀䘀
Compact, all functions tucked into a linear form, the edge is completely exposed to the road
PUBLIC PLAZA
The institute is sandwiched between floors.
The institute is tucked away into a corner of a university building making it inaccessible to anyone outside the campus, also pushing it away from the rest of the departments considering the multiple courses offered at universties.
SEMI PUBLIC ZONE INSTITUTION GROUND RESIDENTIAL
BLOCK LANDSCAPED AREA
The institute is a massy block, with no scope for fairs and festivities which is often associated to food.
THESIS: SCHOOL FOR CULINARY ARTS, Guindy The institute interacts with the community with a public plaza which would contain an ensemble of kiosks, a learning kitchen which opens up to the public for competitions and classes / demos and a gallery. The auditorium is also a shared space that the public can use after school hours.
The linear form is maintained, the edge of the site is given more character in terms of its functions making it formal (enterance to the institute) on one side and informal on the other (public plaza) formal

CITY NEGOTIATED PLACE MAKING IN THE FRONT YARD OF SHIVAJINAGAR ST. MARY'S BASILICA
NORONHA PRECINCT is the front yard to the complex fabric that shivajinagar is. It is a busy street, a prime location for commercial activity. The commercial activity is not only confined to the formal setting of a shop, there are flocks of vendors peddling their goods to the passers by, making the place vibrant. C The

The INDO SARCENIC RUSSELL MARKET
The market was set up in 1927 to realise the need of an organised market space for the growing population of the area, and is still famed for its fruits, vegetables and flowers.
RICHARDS SQUARE
a quiet sunken court with shops catering to furniture and crockery crockery..
ECONOMIC DYNAMISM:
URBAN DESIGN | RVCA | SELECTED WORKS
SOCIAL DYNAMISM:
POLITCAL POWERPLAY:
The church attracts a large number of visitors from all over the country during the first week of september for the ST.MARY’S FEAST, making Noronha square culturally significant. There are flower and candle sellers at the door of the church who sell their wares to the many devotees. There is MEENAKSHI TEMPLE COMPLEX and a MOSQUE in the vicinity adding to the cultural significance of the place.
The Police , are constantly positioned at the northern end of the square. The police also constantly try to keep the hawkers from infringing the footpath, hampering the pedestrian movement. The police impose FINES (HAFTA) on these HAWKERS illegally occupying the public space (footpath). But the hawkers hardly budge for a days profit , they pay around 200 - 300 rupees a day to the police.
In addition to the FORMAL COMMERCIAL nature of this place, there is an INFORMAL MARKET. Retail and wholesale vendors use different tactics to make optimum use of the available resources available to them even if that would mean BRINGING DOWN PRICES to WIDEN THEIR CUSTOMER BASE or to set up their SHOPS ON THE FOOTPATH despite having an designated shop else where. The precinct being major PEDESTRIAN ZONE makes it a prime location for FOOTPATH HAWKERS to set up stalls making use of the abundant pedestrian traffic heading towards the church and russell market, at times blocking the visibility of the formal shops in the background.
