It has been brought to our attention that ratcheting load bars are no longer legal as a form of primary load securement in the Province of Alberta. E-track must now be used instead. Anyone caught using ratcheting load bars for primary securement will be put out of service – this includes out of province trucks. My contact at Alberta CVSE explained that every spring the CVSE attend refresher seminars where any changes in rules and regulations are discussed. He confirmed that this year ratcheting load bars were on the agenda and John White they are now no longer considered legal. Apparently the manufacturer’s literature has always said they were not meant for primary load securement. The problem is I have found no one other than the CVSE in Alberta who aware of this crack down. This includes Alberta trucking companies, trailer rental companies and even the BC CVSE. This is not acceptable. It is critical that when this type of change is made to the National Safety Code the information is communicated nationwide. Please see the letter on page 5. As of July 15th there are a total of 55 MPs, from all political parties, who have chosen to retire instead of seeking re-election in the October Federal Election. This is the highest number of retiring MPs since 1993. The noble reasons given for their mass exodus from politics varies. Some have said they want to spend more time with their families. Others have declared their desire to serve their fellow citizens in other fields. But many people believe it is because of a bill concerning MP’s pensions, that was first proposed in 2012 and has since passed. As a result of that bill, by 2017, pension contributions for an MP will rise to nearly $39,000 a year from the $11,000 they now pay. But the real kicker is that those elected as of 2015 will have to wait until age 65 to receive their full pensions instead of collecting it at age 55. Being a little confused about the wording I called the federal Conservative Party and enquired if an incumbent MP were re-elected in 2015 would he or she still have to wait until age 65 to receive full pension. I was told that yes that was the case. While the reasons for leaving given by some MPs may be true, for many my dad often used an old school saying that expressed what many people are thinking today. He would have said, “That’s a load of malarkey.” When I was a young man, guys would sometimes play a game with dollar bills. The object of the game was to declare a poker hand using the serial numbers on your bill. Each player in turn upped their declared hand until one player thought the other was bluffing. He would indicate he didn’t believe him by calling out the name of the game. I have to admit that even dear old Dad would have called “B.S.” on this one.

LETTERS to the EDITOR
e Whit John agazine

John White agazine Pro-Trucker M
Hello John, I went through Balzac scale on July 23rd with a 30,000lb load of oil field chemical in 13 totes. I was called in for an inspection but I was not worried as I knew everything was in order. Or so I thought. When I opened the trailer they told me that the 2 load bars I had across the back of the load were obsolete. They went on to say that I could be fined $800 for not having a secure load. They told me that the rules have changed in the last 6 months and e-track is now mandatory in place of load bars. Luckily they were good about it and only gave me a warning but they put the trailer out of service forcing me to leave it while going to get another trailer. That turned a quick Calgary to Red Deer trip into a day and a half fiasco. The reason for this letter is very few people but the CVSE seem to know about this change. When the rules for straps changed everyone knew about it. As a matter of fact there was an industry wide shortage as all the big companies were
buying them up by the skid full leaving nothing out there for the smaller guys until the manufacturers caught up. At first I thought that I somehow missed the news release as I am a company driver but my company was as surprised by this news as I was. I took my trailer in today to have it upgraded which my company said they would have done long ago if they knew about it. The real kicker is that when I went in to a national trailer company and told them I needed the work done because of the change they wanted to see a copy of the citation because even they did not know about it. They said they have 1000 rental units that they now do not know if they will be sending out on long term lease, retrofitting or scrapping because of the additional cost. I have been told that this is a safety issue as the old load bars were not dependable but in this day and age of computers and emails why is it not possible for a blanket email to be sent out to let all registered companies know of these changes – especially if it truly is a safety issue. Cap-n Calgary, AB Editor’s note: This is good information Cap’n, and a money saver for many drivers out there. One thing everyone should remember is that the guys at the scales don’t make the policy any more than the cops make the laws, it is just their job to enforce them. Any changes in enforcement of National Saftey Code regulations should be widely publi-

Although each of these keyboard playing genius’ had their own style for tickling the ivories they had one very important thing in common. They all created and followed a routine that was specific to them. Eric Clapton, and both the late Stevie Ray Vaughn and BB King shared it as well, only with the guitar. Every time these dilettanti virtuoso’s sat down with their instrument it was done the same way. This routine was developed to ensure that when they were applying themselves to their trade it was done in such a way that nothing would be missed. Perfection, or as near to it as possible, is done by practicing the same thing over and over, time and again the same way. as simple, but important as, your pre-trip inspection, to the more possibly dangerous fuel loading and unloading. Finding a routine will ensure that nothing is missed and assist in avoiding mishaps which can be costly, painful, or worst case scenario, fatal. Start in the same spot each time and work your way in the same direction. If you like, talk to yourself. It works for me, and everyone generally takes a wide berth around me because of it. Of course it could be the fact that I blurt out some of the words louder at times. However, if that does not keep people away and they interrupt you, you have two options. The first is to ask them politely to wait till you are finished or secondly you can stop and entertain them. Regardless of what you choose to do upon being
interrupted, I strongly suggest going back to the beginning of your routine and making another visual check to make sure you do not make a mistake. The extra minute to take note of any missed step is better than bent landing gear, spilled fuel, or an injury/fatality. At the end of the day when you are speaking with the boss everyone knows listening to a finely tuned piano is better than nails on a chalkboard any day of the week. ***** Gallagher opened the newspaper and was dumbfounded to read in the obituary column that he had died. He quickly phoned his best friend, Finney. ‘Did you see the paper?’ asked Gallagher. ‘They say I died!!’ ‘Yes, I saw it!’ replied Finney. ‘Where are ye callin’ from?’

From the Patch By Tamara Weston
Tamara and her husband Eric, were the Rig of the Month drivers in our October 2014 issue.
Now that the snow and ice has been gone for a few months, our trucks stay clean for more than just a few hours and it’s great to see other clean trucks on the road too. We mainly haul on Hwy 63 which starts just north of Edmonton and runs up through Fort McMurray. In the winter it is impossible to keep a truck clean on that road but some days, during late spring and summer, it can be its own truck show. I’ve seen some pretty amazing trucks in the last few weeks, from the totally blacked out Kenworth down by Devon to the sweet looking two tone red and beige flat top Pete rolling through Grassland. I always like to see the guys who take pride in their ride and when given the chance, to listen to their tips and tricks as to what works best as far as polish goes or what makes it shine the best. I’ve learned quite a bit this summer on the proper way to shine my truck and it’s more work than I ever thought - but the rewards of having a sweet ride out weigh the sweat equity. One of the first things I did when I got into the blue beast was to hand wash her. I was pleasantly surprised to

see that underneath the dust and mud was a pretty sweet looking truck. She is still a work in progress but every days off she gets a spa treatment in the form of a hand wash and a wax and polish.
One of our good friends came over one day and showed us the fine art of power polishing tanks and working them into a mirror shine. It turned out that our boss needed a set of hard shell trailers polished and after seeing what we were able to do with our trucks he offered them to us. Not really knowing what we were getting into at the time we said sure! Well 6 days later we were done. If we didn’t know before we sure know now how to work a power polisher and in what sequence we need to use the different colour wheels and polish. With Alberta Big Rig Weekend coming up this month our trucks are shined up and blue team is ready to roll. BAcK in The dAy Way back when, I had a B61 and a float, and used to do a lot of equipment moves for different companies. One of them phoned me up one day and asked me to take a D5 Cat way back into the bush to an old gold mine they were thinking about reopening. I was a little concerned when he said ‘old’ gold mine without mentioning how old but I needed the work so against my better judgement I took the job. A buddy of mine had nothing to do at the time and he was a Cat operator so I called him up. I knew he would be useful if I ran into trouble. I loaded up bright and early the next morning and we headed up the road to our favorite truck stop for breakfast. After chow it was only 3 hours up to the gravel road where we were supposed to turn off. We went up the gravel road with no problems until we came to a sign that marked our turn off onto another “road” that led to the gold mine. This goat trail that they called a road was no more than two ruts with trees and bushes overgrowing on both sides and some smaller trees between

the ruts that had been knocked down lately and just left where they had fallen. We double checked our directions and yep this was where we were going. Luckily it was ONLY 4 miles from there back to the mine. I dropped my old Bulldog down into the bottom box and after a few wiggles and a lot of cussing we finally had the old girl pointed down the trail. I don’t think we made it more than a hundred yards before we lost the passenger’s mirror but we were still moving forward so on we went. By now we were sinking almost to the hubs but the old girl kept plowing on so I kept my foot in it. We had gone almost 3 miles when there was a little bend in the road and we came to what was marked on our map as a bridge. What it actually was, is an old railway flat car

that was sitting up on two large logs about 8 inches off the ground. It was spanning a little 20 foot wide creek. After walking the bridge we decided that since there was no way to turn around or back up we might as well go for it. I eased my front end up onto the deck, checked to see if my tanks were clear, and then tried to get the drives up but there was no way. I backed up and we filled in the ruts with logs then slowly eased forward and tried again – no way. By now I am a little peeved and not thinking straight so I backed up, threw in a few more logs hopped back in and released the clutch. I poured the coal to the old dog and with a lurch and a jump she was half way across the bridge. That’s when my left duals went through the deck and I came to a grinding halt. Now I had a problem. This was pre-cell phones days and we were about 15 miles from a highway so we were on our own. After looking the situation over we unloaded the cat, which took a lot of weight of my unit, and Fred put the blade down and started pushing on the back of the trailer as I slowly released the clutch. We finally popped the duals free and Fred pushed me across what was left of the bridge. Once we got to the other side we could see the mine so Fred walked the Cat up to the diggings while I went up and turned around. We went to the cabin but guess what - no-one was home, there was no phone, and we still had to get back across the ‘bridge’. We looked around the mine for tim-

bers to fix the bridge, something that every mine has laying around, but there were none to be found. There was however an equipment shed and with a little help from a couple of tire bars and a tire hammer we managed to get inside to find a real nice chain saw. With the help of the chain saw, four hours later we had a bunch of nice 30 foot poles that, with a little dozer work, we soon had across the deck holes and chained in place. Fred then did a little work with the CAT to level the road on each side so I could go on and off the bridge a little smoother. When we were all ready to go I slowly I eased the old truck across the bridge and down onto the so called road. I am not going to relate how long it took us to get out of there and I’m not going to dwell on how many cuss words were said, but we did manage to get back to our favorite diner the next morning in time for breakfast. After that I headed home to wash about a ton of mud off my old Mack and re-attach the mirror as well as make a few minor repairs to other parts of the truck that had suffered during the trip. Suffice to say that the company got a bill that was more than double what I had quoted them. Luckily I had done this type of ‘quick easy run’ before and so I had the foresight to say that once we were off road we charged by the hour. Even at that I still believe I lost money on the deal but then - THAT’S TRUCKING.

Colin Black lives in Bellshill, Lanarkshire, Scotland and has been driving truck for over 40 years. His story shows us once again that the problems drivers face are universal.
My Pal Tam
I met Thomas Fitzsimmons (Tam) when I worked for Lep International. Tam worked out of Prestwick Airport and I was based at Glasgow Airport. I didn’t know it then, but this was to turn into a 20 year long friendship. Tam was one of those guys who would go out of his way to help you, a real old school driver. We both drove identical trucks and as soon as I got into the Prestwick area all the local drivers would wave at the truck thinking that it was him, bus drivers, taxi drivers, everybody knew Tam. He was so well thought of round the airport that the company used to send him up to the customs office if there was a shipment they wanted cleared in a hurry. Tam was even invited to the customs Christmas party. One day Tam and I were at a loose end down at Prestwick and had an hour or so to spare so he asked me, “Have you ever seen inside a cargo plane?” He then proceeded to show me one. The big cargo planes had a jump seat just outside

Or maybe one of the airport fire engines would be going out on a training run and we would get invited into the cab for a high speed blast up the runway. Prestwick airport was a lot quieter then with only the occasional commercial flight coming in. There were however a lot of military flights coming in. This was due to the fact that Prestwick had a long runway and could accommodate all the big transport planes, like the Russian Antinov. When the IBM plant was putting out a new product they would bring in one of these monsters that opened up at the front. Instead of driving right into it like they normally do they would lower the ramp until it was level and then use it as a loading dock. When they did that you could get four or six trucks around it all unloading at the same time. The inside of these planes were massive and forklifts ran back and forward unloading the constant stream of trucks that shuttled between IBM Greenock and Prestwick until the plane was full, then off it would go, to Italy, Germany, or wherever. I was lucky enough to be down at Prestwick the day they brought the space shuttle over for a fly past. The shuttle was mounted on the back of a jumbo jet and did a fly past of all the places in the UK that had made parts for it. I wish I had carried a camera back then, as I do now, as the big jumbo looked like it had only just cleared the warehouses as it went over - what a shot that would’ve been. As I said Tam was old school so the outside of his truck was always clean and the inside was always tidy. As Tam lived locally he would park his truck at the airport and get a lift home from whoever was going his way. One time Tam got a brand new truck and he parked it in his normal spot at the airport. The morning after he’d taken delivery of this new truck Tam came into work to find an English truck up from London Heathrow had parked back to back with his truck. It looked like to Tam that the driver had reversed right up to his new truck, and only stopped when he felt

Sutco Celebrates 20 Years of Trucking by Melanie Sutherland
January 2015 marks 20 years of business for Sutco. I still remember the day in 1995 when Chris (my boyfriend and high school sweetheart at the time) called to ask me to leave my university program and join him in Salmo as he was purchasing a Log Truck and

was going to get his Class 1 license. I had never heard of Salmo before and I knew absolutely nothing about the transportation industry but I agreed to follow my heart and join him. It was very quickly decided due to a massive shortage of logging trucks we would team up with his dad, Robert Sutherland, and form a company in the transportation and mainly log hauling industry. We started with a little office in the spare room of our mobile home and an unheated and un-air-conditioned shop, where Chris was trucker by day and mechanic by night. Chris’ background was heavy duty mechanics as he completed this program at BCIT in Burnaby just a year beforehand. Five years later we had approximately 12 trucks, were married and had two toddlers running around, we had outgrown our home office and built an office - which is now the mechanics lunch room. In 2004 we were moving in to our new offices and shop with roughly a fleet of 35 trucks. We had expanded our business to include chip and general freight hauling, servicing most of Canada and the top three western U.S. states. 20 years have flown by and there definitely have been ups and downs. Sutco now consists of a fleet of 75 trucks and 137 trailers. Our mission was always to remain a family run operation, with family being a top priority for ourselves and our employees, and we strive to maintain this on a daily basis. We look forward to making this coming year one of our best years yet, we thank all of our employees

for their continued dedication to Sutco, we realize our staff is by far our most valued asset. Our 20 Year celebration was held at our head office in Salmo BC on June 6th. We had an awesome turn out of close to 300 people, consisting of: employees, friends, family and business partners. The day involved a great BBQ and go carts sponsored by Kal Tire, a bouncy castle for the kids sponsored by Inland Kenworth, excavator contest sponsored by Brandt Tractor and a Rock N Roll band sponsored by Cookson Motors. We also had a couple “friendly” games of Family Feud along with some great prizes given out throughout the day. We ended the day by recognizing and celebrating our employees; we presented our 5 year staff with jackets and our 10 year staff with watches. The day was a huge success!!!

all about. First off let me say that the work that John, Donna and my loving wife Tori put into the shows is incredible. I do have a bit of input, but I do a fraction of the work they all do. Trophies to be sold, venues to book, insurance, well, you get the idea. It is a labor of love. The satisfaction for us is seeing everyone out at the shows year after year. The pride all the drivers at the shows take in their rides. For drivers it is about meeting people you only pass on the road, perhaps chat with on the radio. As well as putting a face to the name, and sometimes a real name to the face. Time spent hanging out with new friends as well as old ones. Time spent with family, trucking and otherwise. The whole idea for the shows was for drivers to just relax and enjoy a quiet weekend of fun with each other. Sure they have evolved a bit to include many categories for the show and shine. This in itself presents its own set of challenges. One of them is judging. Let’s face it each and every guy or girl at the show thinks their ride is the best. After all you worked hard to make it as pretty as possible, blood sweat and tears for sure. But at the end of it all, it comes down to what someone else likes or doesn’t like. Our judges work with industry but not for industry. They are DOT, Police, insurance people, union reps, custom car guys, and writers from other industry publications. These are people who have no vested interest in the show. They do not know who

sponsors trophies or who donates what as far as door prizes go. So they choose winners based on their likes and tastes. Let’s face it, often it may rub some people the wrong way. The important thing to remember is that the truck beside you may not even be in the same category as you are. Trucks that are parked beside you could be competing in any number of different categories, none of which you are in. At the end of the day we must remember one real important thing. It is supposed to be fun. Over the years there have been many who demonstrate this or say it at the end of the show. The past couple of years The Brown Muffin (aka Clayton Moznik ) has rolled in covered in bugs, loaded with scrap cars just to sit back relax, eat a steak dinner and chill with friends. One person who always said to me, we do not come here for the trophies, we come here to hang out and have fun was Jeff Hildebrand. As many of you know he recently lost his battle with cancer. By the time this is read we will have gone to Edmonton to say our final good byes. Jeff, Darwin, Ed, Al, and the whole All weather Windows crew really embraced what the show was about. From Jeff putting up with my smart ass comments about his sweet ride, to all the guys sitting around having a few pops with me and just talking about life and family. Jeff was always just glad to be there. He said to me many times, “Ben we just love the show, just an added bonus that we win a

trophy here and there.” Once cancer took hold of him the shows were never the same. He was not around to put up with me and my hijinks. I missed that dearly. So this year when I got word he was going to make it out to the BC show I was stoked to see him at a show again. Yes the jokes were flying. It was just like it had always been. Jeff giving Darwin a hard time about less chatting and more polishing, and this year’s highlight for me Jeff’s stripper pole. Darwin and Jeff were quite proud of it. Let’s say it involved IV drugs for Jeff and an IV beer drip for Darwin on an IV pole mounted through a cup holder between the seats. Watching the two of them carry on has always reminded me of the fun that so many guys have at our shows. Brothers for sure the way they pick at each other. (Done with Love they told me) The stories of the car hauling days, and well a few others……you would have to ask Darwin. I promised never to tell. There was also a polish incident at the BC show. Darwin learned a valuable lesson about lids and the laws of physics that day. This is what the shows are about, fun. Sure trophies are cool and nice that people appreciate your ride and all the hard work you put into it, but at the end of the day it is supposed to be fun. So let’s get back to basics. Come to the show, have fun , eat a steak, have a few laughs, couple of pops, and remember we are all big kids who just want to have fun. Jeff enjoy that sweet ride you are now crusin’ Heaven in. Catch you later driver. Mudflap out.

Mel is a retired veteran driver who has spent 40 years on the road.
Teamsters and the Fraser Canyon
When men first traveled the Fraser River Canyon they did it by hanging scaffolds from the cliffs above and then working their way along the face of the Canyon. Later they blasted trails out of the rock faces, using the only explosive available to them, Nitroglycerine, a very unstable and dangerous explosive. Although many lives were lost during its construction, a walking trail was completed, and then with the ever increasing demand for supplies for the Caribou gold rush it was widened to accommodate pack mules. Jackass Mountain got its name by virtue of the number of mules that fell to their death while climbing the Mountain. In the 1800’s a wagon Road was built and the mule skinners were vaulted into the lofty position of teamsters. No longer did they have to walk the infamous trail, but their position was no less dangerous. Knowing the modern canyon Highway or even before its update in the fifties you can imagine, three, four or even six or eight teams of horses struggling up some of

the Grades, with two freight wagons being driven by one man. Then looking down the other side, where their decent would have been controlled by the swamper, pulling on ropes attached to longer ropes, that in turn pulled iron clad brake shoes against iron clad rims. Every conceivable means of transportation was tried in the canyon. One person even bought camels from the US Army and tried using them, to no avail. Another industrious person imported Thompson Steam Traction Engines, from England to pull the wagons. These Steam Traction Engines, the product of the Industrial Revolution, that were the main power for heavy load in the British Isles, were no match for Jackass Mountain. So it was up to the teamsters and their sturdy horses,

to maintain the steady flow of goods into the Caribou. That is until the arrival of gasoline powered trucks, the forerunners of our modern trucks, that eventually picked up the burden. All though these machines were a giant step ahead from the horses and wagons they were still a dangerous occupation for the teamster. The engines were temperamental and under powered and the mechanical brakes almost nonresistant. The tires were solid rubber and some had open cabs, still subjecting the drivers to the whims of Mother Nature.
Over the years, first one Rail Road then a second one were given priority over the highway, for easy travel through the canyon so it ended up climbing, twisting

This is most apparent as you wind your way, north bound between Shaw Spring and the top of Tank Hill, some of the time above the rail and then below them, with the Fraser river boiling along beside you. The next time you go through the Fraser Canyon, on a cold winter night with the snow eating up your lights and your drivers breaking traction every time you get on the throttle a little too hard of the big 600hp diesel, be thankful - if you had been born a hundred years earlier you might have been sitting on a wooden seat, with the wind and snow blowing in your face and your hand frozen to the traces as you guided eight horses along the old Caribou Wagon road.

The first unit I drove was an early ‘50s American built, single axle cabover GMC, It had a gas pot and a 5 speed transmission with a 2 speed splitter giving me a, hairstraight-back, top speed of 48 miles per hour. I hauled a large boat on a single axle flat bed from Winnipeg to Michigan and

Many of the skills that were once necessary for a driver to do the job, along with the many tools that had to be carried, are now left in the shop. I do not for one minute resent the transition. I am very grateful to have had the chance to develop my career during this exciting and challenging half century. It has truly been a blessing and my wish is to share these important memories with all of you. Drivers of today are setting the stage for the next huge transition that is already in motion. With the paperwork, regulations, and traffic of today the job is not easier, just different. Think about it, be a part of it and enjoy the experience! Give yourself a pat on the back, you deserve it!

returned with four brand new cars on board. Sitting over the engine in the heat of summer, even with the 2/40 A/C (two windows down at 40mph) was like sitting inside a furnace. In the winter you wore every piece of clothing you owned. Over the years the trucks I drove became more powerful with 525 hp engines and two stick transmission giving you anywhere from 10 to 20 gears. Some of those vehicles could exceed 100 mph on the level ground pulling up to 142,000 lb. on two trailers. By the time I left the drivers seat for the office chair, the cab of the last truck I owned was like a mini-camper, where I could live quite comfortably without having to run the engine 24/7 in extreme weather conditions. In the “good ol’ days” you had to have skills to maintain your truck on a daily basis so that it would not let you down when least expected. When it did happen you took it in stride, diagnosed the problem, fixed it as quickly as possible and got back on the road. There were no hours of service or pretrip-inspection regulations to speak of – you ran on old-fashioned common sense. Which isn’t as common as it is made out to be. If a driver had to record every hourly increment spent on doing their job a lot fewer miles would have been recorded in a day. Current regulations and technology that is available today has dramatically changed the industry landscape forever. Trucks are much easier and more comfortable to drive and except for very minor repairs, on-the-road-maintenance is

Helping Hand
Has someone ever helped you out, maybe smoothed your way Perhaps just some little thing that helped you thru your day, Could someone have taken your place, so you could have a rest Maybe they just urged you on, so you could do your best. Maybe just a shoulder to cry on in the night Perhaps just a guiding hand that led you to the light Sometimes help is subtle and hard for us to see Sometimes it stands tall and proud like a mountain or a tree. Perhaps someone helped you out, and you never took the time To thank them or to pay them back, somewhere down the line. Don’t worry much about it, as they didn’t work for pay Just pass along that helping hand somewhere along the way Neighbors helping neighbors is how strangers become friends That’s how we keep in balance, from the beginning to the end Stop to help someone, wave and then be gone Don’t ask for pay or gratitude, just smile and pass it on.
