It is with great sadness that I inform you that our good friend, Bob Richardson, from Victoria, BC passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday July 21, 2017. Bob was born in Wauchope, Saskatchewan in 1940. Bob’s father John White worked as a cat operator building the Hope/Princeton and Anarchist Mountain highways. That is where Bob got his passion for all things mechanical and started his heavy duty equipment career. Bob was a skilled equipment operator and it was often said that he could run anything with an engine be it on tracks or wheels. In 1959 while working on the airport run ways for Perini driving truck he met his wife Lynda who worked in the coffee shop at the airport in Sydney. Lynda says he kept coming in and buying cigarettes every day just so he could talk to her - he didn’t even smoke - he gave them all to his brother and Dad. Bob and Lynda eventually married and had four daughters, Brenda, Tami (Steve), Tracey and Vicki (Mike), two grandchildren Rob and Shantyll (Jessey) and one great grandson Brody. Bob was very much a dedicated family man. Bob worked three jobs to provide for his family in the early years, worked a number of years at the University of Victoria in the landscaping department running backhoe and gravel truck. He joined operating engineers 115 and went on to working for Chew equipment for a time running their equipment. He worked for a few different companies through the Brody and Bob switching hats years Carley Logging and Cougar Inlet Logging, he built logging roads for quite a few years then drove logging trucks hauling 120 ton loads sometimes down 30% grades. One day Bob found a 1964 Cabover Kenworth with a 335 Cummins and a 10 speed road ranger transmission that he wanted to buy. Lynda says that

He kept it for a few years then bought a 1988 Kenworth with a 425 cat and a 13 speed that anyone who has been to a Big Rig Weekend will recognize. Bob and Lynda were at the very first Pro-Trucker Magazine Big Rig Weekend in BC and then over the next 17 years he and Lynda attended 29 out of the 31 shows that have been held. His truck broke down before he could make it to one and with the other show there was a scheduling conflict with another event he had committed to at Heritage Acres in Saanichton BC. Bob also participated in numerous Lighted Christmas Parades on Vancouver Island and in Surrey. He loved Bob and Lynda at 2016 BC Big Rig Weekend the shows and parades and he rarely missed an opportunity to attend any that he could. Another great joy of his was running his train with they have four generations that participate at Heritage the 3 cylinder Kubota engine out at Heritage acres in acres. Dear Editor: On June 27/17 I was finishing up my solo motorcycle ride from Ontario to visit my sister and her hubby in Chilliwack, BC. For some unknown reason she told me “If you run into trouble, ask a trucker for help because between Princeton and Hope you won’t have telephone reception.” At Hope Slide, (a brake check for truckers and viewpoint for travellers) I stopped to check my saddlebags on the bike. I discovered the framework broken beyond repair, load being held on by my taillights! I had no sooner stopped then a kind trucker offered help by promising to phone my sister and he did! A kind tow truck driver from Mario’s Towing also offered to take

my gear down to Hope and about 3 travellers from the viewpoint also offered help and thank you all! Several other truckers(about every 2nd or 3rd) offered their help also! Thanks to all of you for your big brother attitude of caring and making sure I was alright! You are all a great bunch of people and I hope everyone out there realizes we have “Angels” on our highways!!! Molly McGuire Lions Head, Ontario. PS-Would the trucker who made the call for me to my sister please call me collect at 519-793-3218, I never got your name and I owe you big time, my friend! Editor’s note: There are many times that truckers have been first on the scene of accidents and or stopped to help those on the road that needed it. My father gave me the same advice when I was learning to drive that you received from your sister. It came in real handy when at 16 years of age I found myself in a complete whiteout, because of fog, while coming through the Fraser Canyon. I couldn’t even see the white line and knew if I stopped at that time that I would be a hazard to anyone coming along. Just about then a truck came out of nowhere so I slipped in close behind and followed him through. I had no idea even what side of the river I was on but I knew he could see.

Military Minds Inc. – The Rolling Barrage 2017 started with one man’s vision of a mass of steel horses traveling across Canada from one coast to the other, akin to the way the country was settled 150 years ago, albeit on wagons and real livestock. Scott Casey, President of Military Minds Inc., Canadian military vet, and PTSD survivor, enlisted the help of a group of volunteers, most of whom only know one another through the social media world. The NHTSA, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, is part of the United States Department of Transportation, the lead agency regulating driverless vehicles. If Congress removes barriers to research and development from the authority of the state and gives it to the NHTSA, it will place the oversight of this technology at the federal level paving the way for the exemption of 100,000 vehicles a year to be free of the federal regulations which currently prohibits a vehicle from operating without a steering wheel, pedals and other controls meant for human navigation. “Self-driving vehicles will not only dramatically change how we get from place to place, they have the potential to prevent accidents and save thousands of lives,” said a member of the committee. “I’m pleased we have compiled this bipartisan framework, which is an important step toward introducing and enacting meaningful legislation that will help the federal government promote the safe development and adoption of self-driving vehicles and ensure the United States remains the world leader in transportation innovation.” Ummm … I don’t think I would put the US at the top of the list of the most innovative nations regarding automotive technology. Certainly many European countries such as Germany, Sweden, the UK and Italy have been at the forefront of the auto industry forever while Japan and Korea are also gaining credibility. executive Joshua Brown crashed his car and died when he T-boned a tractor-trailer crossing the highway in Florida, it appears that the investigation has uncovered the fact that Brown was watching a Harry Potter movie and that he ignored the Tesla car’s autonomous system which warned him seven different times that he ought to assume manual control of the vehicle and just two minutes prior to the crash he bumped his speed up a few notches. When it comes to commercial vehicles, the Freightliner Inspiration truck, Daimler North America’s entry into the driverless commercial application, if any and I repeat with emphasis, if any deviation from a faded line marking to a GPS hiccup, the faint outline of an obstruction or any such critical input is not being processed the truck will demand a human take over control or the unit will simply slow down, pull off the road and stop. This feature would have saved Brown’s life. The industry refers to this sensitive system as “Cruise Control on Steroids” so rather than agonizing over the “what-ifs” it is my opinion that these systems, once the wrinkles have been ironed out and are released for mass production, will be embraced with enthusiasm by both professional drivers and private motorists. On one test drive the Freightliner Inspiration worked its way through a bumper-to-bumper traffic ball-up on its way into Las Vegas without a hitch relieving the attending driver of the stress of the situation. Just as with all new technology there will be those who are nervous and those who will put too much trust in the new protocol,

but if implemented properly and operated correctly it will become a boon to all drivers and road users, especially truckers. Besides all that the new American regime, we are told ad nauseum, has everything under control … why it’s been Tweeted that more has been accomplished by the POTUS in 5 months in office than any other president and administration in the history of the world. Other nations are moving right along as well, such as Finland, which country’s capital Helsinki has recently added two completely autonomous electronic mini-buses to its fleet for a month long test, each bus capable of carrying up to a dozen commuters on regular traffic routes. This follows a successful pilot project on closed roads in a neighbouring community. The buses will have a blazing top speed of 40 km/h and will be challenged to keep pace with other road users. The UK is also poised to begin trials on its public roads including allowing lorries on the M-6 and driverless SUVs in London itself. The hope is that small driverless publictransit vehicles will fill the niche where human-operated conveyances have proven to be cost prohibitive and inefficient on municipal budgets. And speaking of Volvo … oh, well now we are … the home of the giant OEM in Sweden has pretty much downplayed its involvement in the development of driverless trucks but it has added a significant boost to harvesting sugar cane in Brazil by designing an autonomous truck

with a steering mechanism that is so advanced the unit which is used to transport newly harvested cane can navigate with such precision through the fields that not a single young sprouting plant is damaged ... something beyond the capability of a human driver. This equates to tens of thousands of dollars in revenue from saved young plants. In fact the steering is so precise it will not allow more than a 25 mm. … okay about one inch … deviation from a preset course. The truck still employs a driver who can now focus on other aspects of the harvesting process creating a more attractive work environment. Volvo’s Latin American president stated, “With this solution, we will soon be able to significantly increase the productivity of our customers in the sugarcane industry while at the same time, we will improve their drivers’ working conditions and safety. This, in turn, will make the job more appealing, and make it easier to recruit and maintain drivers.” All this translates to a production increase of ten tons per hectare, or for those of us not fluent in metric, 4.05 tons per acre so the consensus is that autonomous vehicles can solve real world problems while increasing profits which will, in my humble opinion, accelerate the technology bringing driverless trucks closer to common acceptance and usage much sooner than the trucking industry or the consuming public at first expected or even thought possible. Stay tuned! Motor with care, arrive home safely and enjoy your family activities … 10-4!

Going back about 25 years ago the Jacksonville Florida Arena was having a few difficulties keeping their ice at 3/4 inch thick (Arena ice becomes sluggish to skate on any thicker than that and any cooler than 16°F) so maintaining professional ice quality can be a bit tricky. You really have to know your stuff. While all this was going on and the poor buggers Zamboni blew up on them just 5 days before opening game. Well the company I was hauling for sent me to London, Ontario to pick up a decked Zamboni and head south with her. I had 4 days to get it there.

CANYON CABLE 1988 LTD. 930-6th Ave., Hope, BC 604-869-9036 toll Free 1-800-588-8868 So I hitched up and headed south. Driving sure has changed over the years, mile after mile solo, I plugged along. Arriving in Jacksonville a day ahead of schedule I was immediately directed to the offload area. I pulled up to the fenced gate guard and handed him my paperwork. The conversation went as follows - some of the spelling is phonetic to give you an idea of the accent: Guard: “Hi there, where you headed sir?” Me: “I have the new Zamboni” Guard: “Where are you coming from with this, my alogies ma’am?” Me: “Ontario” Guard: “Where’s that?”

Me: “Canada” Guard: “Is that north?” Me: North of here yes.” Guard: “Never heard of Ontario” Scratching my head I tried to come up with a way to explain just where Ontario was. Mind you, I thourally was enjoying his deep south drawl and somewhat good looks. Me: “You know, between Quebec and Manitoba” Guard: “No, no never heard of Manitoba”. Me: You ever heard of Canada?” Guard: “Well yeah, Canada is in Ontario everybody knows that” he laughed. I took that opportunity to just sit there and enjoy my stunned silence. After all I was still in North America wasn’t I? So stubborn me, I went back in for more punishment. Me: “Ontario is a province in the country of Canada” The Guard, Nodding as if he knew and understood he erased all doubt the instant he said, “Canada ...oh yeah, that’s over der in Texas” I proceeded through the gate at this point giving a light hearted wave exclaiming that I would see him later. I got positioned for off load and crawled into my bunk to grab a bite. When....knock knock knock came on my truck door. It was the guard. “Sorry to bother you but I figured it out ma’am. My

Leonard (Len) Kane Sr. December 18, 1932 – July 16, 2017 Len’s Lift Truck Delivery / Ranger Transport

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Leonard (Len) Kane at the age of 84. He passed away peacefully in his home in Coquitlam on Sunday, July 16 after a courageous battle with cancer. Len was born in New Westminster, BC and was entrepreneur from an early age and well into retirement. One of his greatest business achievements was founding Len’s Lift Truck Delivery Ltd in 1964 and acquiring Ranger Transport Ltd in 1978. Len overcame numerous obstacles and became a very well-known and well-respected businessman in the Trucking Industry. On July 29th a truck convoy through Port Kells is planned in his memory. It is anticipated to have a very large turnout with many friends, employees and companies paying their respect by joining in. Len was a loving, generous friend, father and grandfather. Len’s spirit, strength, and sense of humour will live on through all who knew and loved him. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Len’s memory to the BC Cancer Foundation or Inspire Health.

REFLECTIONS THRU MY WINDSHIELD

PRO-tRuCKER MAGAZINEe

By Dave Madill Dave was Pro-Trucker Magazine’s Rig of the Month in June of 2001 Fred and the Bear If you have been following my stories you will realize that over the years I have had a few run ins with bears but I think the funniest was also one of the first times I had a close encounter and it was even closer for a friend of mine. It was spring and things had greened up pretty good and Dad told me and my buddy Fred to go around the farm and the garage and load up all the winters garbage and haul it off to the county dump. We took our old B61 grain truck and went around and loaded about half a load then went up to the pit and loaded on the few boulders that had not gone through the Grizzly Bars to the crusher. After that we went over to Fred’s place and got his garbage also. Finally we pulled the tarp over the load and away we went. When we pulled into the dump we noticed that right beside the road was about a forty foot spruce that someone had removed the branches on the road side only. I backed down to where people had been dumping at the side of the hill, raised the box and tripped the tailgate and everything headed downhill. Some of those big rocks cascaded down and made a jump about half the way down and crashed into the bushes. Apparently there was a baby black bear at the bottom of the garbage pile and when it heard the commotion he took off up the pile like all the hounds of hell were after it. Now the little bear, (about twenty pounds) went right by the passenger’s side of the truck and when Fred saw it he figured he was going to catch him a bear cub. There is only one problem with bear cubs - they are usually protected by Momma bears who get real angry when someone goes near their cubs. By now the cub was legging it and Fred was right behind it. The cub was howling and this is when Momma came up the bank and started after Fred. Fred was gaining on the cub when the cub got to that

i n fo @ t i m s t r a i l e r re p a i r. c o m spruce I mentioned, and little bears are great climbers, so it went up the tree with Fred about one limb behind it. Momma bear slowed down a bit and I noticed she had a second cub following her. When she got to the tree she started up along with the second cub. Now things got complicated as cub number one topped out at about thirty five feet and Fred topped out at thirty. Momma bear being the heaviest topped out at about twenty five with cub number 2 right behind her. I dropped the box back down, the tailgate latched and I went to jump out of the truck when I realized that if I got out Momma bear would have full access to me. Quickly I shut the doors of the truck and tried to figure out what to do. Finally I had an idea and I slowly moved the truck up beside the tree and raised the box as far as it would go and manoeuvred so the top of the box, (cab shield), was as close as possible to the tree. I told Fred to grab the top and swing over and I would drive him away from the tree and the bear. Fred did this but about that time cub number 1 broke the branch he was on and landed on Fred’s shoulders. The cub was squealing and scratching, Fred was squealing and Momma bear was not happy. Fred finally got cub number 1 off his shoulders and it landed on my box tarp, dug in his claws, shredded the tarp and fell into the grain box. I started putting the box back down to allow Fred to climb on the cab and then get in the truck when Momma decided her cub needed her and she jumped off the tree and all 200+ pounds of her went through what was left of the tarp and into the box. Fred dived in through the window and was all excited that

This was about the time that I decided to pull the plug and I tripped the tailgate and dropped Momma and cub number 1 out the back at the base of the tree, grabbed a gear and without lowering the box took off. Everything was working well until I came to the county road where I wiped out the telephone lines and shut down phone service for about half the county. Dad made Fred and I pay for the tarp, the county never found out who cut the phone lines and Fred never got his bear cub but to this day he still has a scar on his right shoulder blade where cub #1 dug in his claws. Looking back on it I can see how funny it was but Fred did throw a pair of underwear in the creek on our way home.

THE DIESEL GYPSY By Bill Weatherstone This is an excerpt from Bill’s book, “The Life and Times of William John Weatherstone.” Izzy’s Gypsies In 1964 while with Wimco Steel my life was nonstop excitement. Something new and different would come up every trip. Never, while working for Izzy, was it ever boring. We were known in the industry as Izzy’s Gypsies.

This one trip in particular, I had taken a rush load of steel plate to Sydney, Nova Scotia practically nonstop. I then headed back to Fredericton, New Brunswick to pick up a load of scrap automotive batteries for Izzy’s recycling yard in Toronto. The truck I was driving was a B-61 Mack conventional cab, no sleeper. Sydney was about 1,300 miles one way. I slept over the steering wheel or cramped up on the seat. By the time I had returned to the Quebec / Ontario border at my regular fuel stop, I was totally beat out, exhausted. There were no log books in Canada at this time. You ran until you could not stay awake, flaked out for a couple hours and then carried on. There was a small gas station in the village of St. Zotique, Quebec. It had 2 gas pumps and 1 diesel pump on the corner of the small building. When fuelling up, the property was so small that my tractor and 36 foot trailer covered 2/3rds of the front of the building. The owner, Real, had come here with his wife and 2 kids to start a business. He only had enough money for a load of fuel and a week’s supply of food for the whole family, who moved into the gas station. He was a great mechanic and progressed at a steady pace. Izzy had set up a fuel account with him and we just pulled in and fuelled up then signed out. On this particular trip, I pulled in and was ready to fuel up when Real came out and said that I could not fuel up today. I asked why not and he said that Izzy owed him about $3,000 and

he could not carry him anymore. He said he was going to go broke and lose everything if he did not get his money. Well I did not have enough fuel to get home, and I was tired and in an ugly mood. I asked Real if it would it be worth a steak dinner and a bed at the local hotel if I got his money for him. He said he would add all the beer I wanted with the steak if I could pull it off. I told him he had a deal and asked if he knew of a local Sheriff or Bailiff that he could call. He said yes, he was friend of the family. Well I told Real to give him a call and to get him over here right now. He made the call and the bailiff was there in 30 minutes. It was really good because the bailiff had a real heavy French accent and spoke broken English. I told Real that I was calling Izzy and demanding him to pay his fuel bill to keep me and the truck from being impounded. It’s not like Izzy was struggling financially, because he had money coming out of his ears and just liked playing games with all his creditors. I advised the Bailiff and Real that I was going to tell Izzy that they were going to impound the truck and load, and that it would not leave the province of Quebec until they received full payment on the account. I asked if they would back my story up? They said yes so I called Izzy collect, and started talking fast and in a very angry mood. “What the hell’s going on?” I asked, “You did not pay your fuel bill and the Bailiff showed up and put the clamps on the truck. They seized and put a lien on it for

failure to pay. If you think that for one minute that I am going to jail for you, you are crazy. If I do, when I get out you will see me as you have never seen me before. Now get me out of this.” His said, “They can’t do that.” I said, “What are you talking about? They already have. Here talk to him yourself.” The bailiff got on the phone in his heavy French accent and corroborated what I said. I grabbed the phone back and screamed at Izzy; “You have 30 minutes to get me out of here!” and then I hung up. Real and the bailiff were visibly shaken at the proceedings. I, on the other hand, was too tired to be upset. I told them to relax, that I think that Izzy knows me and my temper enough that he will come through on time. Fortunately, just around the corner from Izzy’s yard, was a Canadian Pacific Telegraph office and it was only 20 minutes later a call came in that Real’s money was in. They could not believe it. I told him to call ahead to the St Zotique Hotel and tell them that I am coming and want a beer, a steak and a bed, in that order. It was a regular trucker’s hangout, and was only a 1/4 mile down the road. By the time I pulled into the lot, parked and ran up the front stairs into the bar, a quart of my favourite beer was sitting at the table waiting for me. As I grabbed my first sip, Leo, (the owner) yelled out, “How do you want this porterhouse steak cooked? And your room is ready when you are. No charge!”

PAGE 48

I was really beat. I downed a couple quarts of beer had a great steak and then flaked out till the next morning. In the end, Real got his money; I got a well-deserved meal and rest, and Izzy’s credit carried on. When I got home Izzy asked if all was OK with me. I said yes for now, and then all was forgotten. That was his way of operating. He also respected me and valued my work, and was quite aware of my explosive temper at times. Work wise, I always gave him my best, and he always made money by me, and in return he pretty well looked after whatever I asked for. He would scream a lot, but eventually he gave in. *****

Public Attitude I was speaking online other day to Davie, a pal of mine. He’s a big laddie from Ayrshire who relocated to Auchterarder in Perthshire. He’s a bit younger than me, so he is still working. He drives a three-axle rigid, with a crane, delivering building supplies to home addresses and building sites. You probably have them over there as well, if you want a ton bag of sand or gravel dropped on your driveway, or a couple of pallets of bricks for a bit of DIY, Davie’s your man. He told me he was delivering to a house on a narrow street recently when a young lady in a BMW 4x4 came around the corner, “I want to get past!” she shouted up to Davie, who was on his crane operators perch. “Ok,” said Davie, “I won’t be long, ten minutes or so.” With that the young, “lady,” launched into a verbal assault with language more befitting a navy man than a lady. So, Davie replied in language he thought she would understand, “When you passed your driving test you had

to reverse around a corner, didn’t you? Well, why don’t you practise that now and go away.” The words he used were more the type the lady herself had used, but I’m sure you get the drift. I’m sure we’ve all experienced that kind of attitude from the general public. Four-wheelers cutting big rigs off on the highway when they think they’re holding them up. People want full shelves in supermarkets and technology and groceries delivered right to the door but see the trucks that deliver those goods as an inconvenience. I was delivering cartons of shoes in the middle of Glasgow one day. It was an old part of the town and the building had been designed for deliveries by horses and carts so I had to unload at the front door. With cars parked on both sides of the street when I stopped the truck the short street was blocked. It didn’t take long for Mr. Angry to come along and demand I move, most other people had almost turned into the street, but saw me and gone around another way, but not this guy. He threatened to report me to the cops, but until the cops appeared I just kept on working, of course they never appeared. As far as Mr. Angry is concerned that’s the job of the police, to move on the riff raff. But when they get caught using their phone at the wheel, for a very important call, they moan the cops should be out catching real criminals. It seems some people just can’t cope with their daily routine being interrupted by other vehicles blocking their

path, especially trucks. It was the same in our Capital city, Edinburgh. I was delivering about 30 boxes of computers to an office in a back lane that ran parallel with George street, one of the main streets. I’d already gone around the block two or three times hoping a space would appear outside the place, or even near it but the problem was the narrow back lane was used as a rat run for cars avoiding the busy main street. As well as parked cars, builders had dropped skips and containers. When I drove down on one of the circuits I saw there was no traffic behind me so I decided to go for it. It was either that or I would be circling the place all day. I stopped, opened the doors on the truck and started to unload, when the guys inside saw me they came out the office and started to help carry the boxes inside. A couple of cars stopped behind me and I signalled to them I would be five minutes, I got a nod and smile from the drivers in return. Then the Edinburgh relative of Glasgow’s Mr. Angry appeared and laid on the horn big time. When he saw that was getting no response he came out of his car to complain to my face. I suggested he help to carry the boxes inside and that would get me away quicker. He was another one who wanted the police to move this lawbreaker. I just tried to ignore him and get on with the job. Now, we all know without trucks delivering all our

necessities the country would grind to a halt, but how many other jobs come with this kind of hassle from the lunatic fringe of the public. Do you remember Davie at the start of this story? He was there for 8 minutes - a mouthful of abuse for 8 minutes.

get out and stretch and not fear for his or her life while doing so. The Association then prepared a presentation on where the truck stops should be located, and why they would be beneficial. Discussions were held, and truckers were looking forward to seeing safe truck rest areas. To date there are not nearly enough safe truck stops on our highways throughout Canada. Recently the United States prepared a report on truck stops, and I cannot wait to see where and when action will be taken. I feel strongly that both the Provincial and the Federal Governments should address this very important issue as soon as possible, as Hours of Service Regulations are great, however if there is not a safe truck stop where a driver can pull into and comply with these regulations, how can we expect compliance. At the same time cars are often found at the side of the road because they too do not have a safe place to pull into. Seeing trucks pulled over on the shoulder of a highway is extremely dangerous and seeing them on the off ramps by the overpasses poses a danger as well. Expectations of commercial drivers to adhere to highway regulations without the rest areas is extremely difficult. After spending a month in the Netherlands and watching the commercial vehicles there, I find that training standards are much higher, and the careers of drivers is

regarded as very skilled and these drivers are respected. Something Canada desperately needs to address, however that will be the subject of another time. Trucks are required to adhere to a lower speed limit, they must remain in the right lane except to pass, and are never allowed to pass on the right, smooth simple and should be easy to enact over here in Canada. Alberta did away with the two speed limits, one for cars and another for trucks, and reasons given were related to safety, however incidents increased. The two speed limits in Holland pose no problems and are regarded as a safety measure. Truck Transport in Canada is not looked at seriously, both at the Federal and Provincial Government level, and desperately this needs their attention. *****

Promised Land Up above the normal crowd in my steed of glass and steel, The rhythm of my heart beats with the pounding of the wheels, My diesel sings a happy note as the highway winds along, It seems to say “We’re nearly home,” with the rumble of its song. We pull into the driveway and our song begins to die, I turn the key and shut it down, the engine seems to sigh I step down slowly from the cab and she meets me at the door As I put my arms around her, now I know what I’m working for: She greets me with a tender kiss and takes me by the hand I know my run is over; I have reached the Promised Land.
